CS4 InDesign Auto update Links
I seem to be having a problem with CS4. When I click the edit original button the image is brought up, change done, Indesign updates. The problem is when I switch back to the image with out clicking edit original and come back to InDesign. It no longer updates with out me clicking update. Is there a prefrence I'm missing or is this something new where it no longer updates automaticlly. Do I just need to reinstall?
I think that it's safe to call a configuration conflict a 'bug'. It might not be a bug from within InDesign, but it's a bug. A programming error, if you will, or an oversight.
At any rate, in my case, the issue is with the image management plug-in we use. It's a conflict or configuration issue - or bug - with the add-on. If I leave it off, I can use Edit Original all day. If I turn it on, Edit Original does not auto-update after I close that first file. So for me, it's a matter of whether I want the ease of auto-updating after Edit Original, or quicker access to our image database. A bug caused by the one thing means I can't have both.
I don't think anyone was confused about how Edit Original is supposed to work. It just wasn't working right for HG. If I had to guess, I would say that HG had some sort of issue with his/her system or software setup that was screwing up the auto-update in CS4, and CS3/CS5 circumvent whatever bug caused that problem in the first place. Which means that the functionality was not removed from CS4, it was simply a bug. Or issue. Or conflict. Or configuration.

Indesign CS4 crashing when updating links
When I open a CS3 file in CS4, and choose to update links when opening the file, Indesign stops working when it tries to update the links. I am not able to cancel the request, I can only shut down the program in the windows task manager.
Anyone knows a way to fix this problem?As a last resort, when I run into the weird problems, I go through a process of elimination to find the offender.
As example, I would delete half the images and try the update. if it works, I know the problem was in one of the images I deleted. If it doesnt, I'd delete the other half and try again. I keep cutting the number of images I remove in half till I'm down to whatever it was causing the problem. The I save it as a newfile type and re-import/place.
Kind of a pain in the tookas, but it works when I'm really stumped.

File linking in photoshop + Auto update links through all applications
At work (graphic and sign studio) we use mostly Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign all together for one project, with linked files from and to these applications.
For example: making a car lettering.
I start with a vector logo in Illustrator -> save as AI
I place this one into Photoshop to apply an effect that's not possible in Illustrator -> save as PSD
This PSD is placed in an Illustrator car outline file -> save as AI
The car design AI is imported in Photoshop again to make a "realistic" picture of the car onto a background -> save as PSD
I place the PSD in an InDesign file, add some text to it and export a proof PDF te send to the customer. -> INDD + PDF
That's just an example offcourse of how we link to and from the 3 apps.
Now if the customer asks to alter the logo just a bit and asks for a new proof, i have to (afaik) manually open each file one at a time, update the links and save/export the updated file. The stuff in Photoshop even has to be REplaced since placed files can't maintain the link to the original file.
1. Is there no way to have linked files in Photoshop just like it works in Illustrator and InDesign? (can't be that hard with smart objects, right?)
2. Is it possible to give a command in the last file (the INDD in my case) to update all links back to the first file?

What makes you think it would be easy?
Anyway, Photoshop is an image editing program, not a page layout program … but if you miss that feature you might lend your support to the appropriate feature requests in the Feature Request Forum.

It would probably be possible to create a JavaScript that, via BridgeTalk, tries to open all linked Files in an Indesign-File in their creator application and update changed Links in Illustrator and Indesign.
But I suspect that would be a fairly complicated endeavor; on the other hand someone might already have attempted that, so maybe you should ask in the Indesign Scripting Forum. -
Mac OS X 10.5.2 & Adobe InDesign CS3 (and possibly InDesign Server)
Our InDesign documents have the linking to imported text turned on.
We are manually updating each InD file, when the external text is updated.
I'm not able to find any example code to run an Applescript to update the link, here's what I thought should work :

update link "Text.txt"
end tell
Text.txt being the file name of the text in the same directory as the InD file and the name that appears in the Links Palate.
Once the script is working, I can set up the Applescript for the images and XML on the page in InD.
These scripts would also need to be updated for InDesign Server.

Linking word documents and auto-updating TOCs?

I know InDesign a bit, but am about to embark on a project that I could use some help on. Im compiling all the different writing Ive done in the past four years into a little ebook. There are about 50 different essays/articles, each under four categories in the table of contents. Many need editing, and the ebook will require lots of moving things around and editing.
So, is it possible to link Word documents like as you can do with images? I would like to have InDesign link to all the different word documents that comprise different essays, etc, so I can edit individual essays from Word and have them auto-update within InDesign. Also, is there a similar thing I can do with the table of contents, where it will automatically update the page number of a given entry when I rearrange it? These two things would save me much time!

AlecAs much as you think you want to auto-update the Word documents, you don't.
Yes, there is a way to link those Word files, but you will lose all formatting applied in ID each time you do update the linked files.
Why don't you just make those changes in InDesign?
Next, yes, you can create a TOC that will update page numbers automatically when the document(s) change.

How do I disable linked smart-object auto-update/refresh?
Working in the CC3D features, I am constantly making changes to my bump map. Every time I step-backwards, or make a significant change to the bump texture (smart object?), CC auto-saves the layer. This specific file is a very very large document (3 gigs in the bump texture layer alone), and the 3D layer has lots of lights and is very complex. This auto-refresh/update really bogs down the time that it would take me to make my changes. I have a very fast machine (I know it's fast, I dont need to list my specs), and I have all shadows disabled.
How do I disable linked smart-object auto-update/refresh?If you do not like a feature like smart objects there is nothing forcing you to use it. Use some other features to do what you want. Please don't ask Adobe to introduce bug into smart object support.
You could work on your bump maps textures in external files. When your done some time in the future you could edit your project with the smart object layer and use replace smart object. Only then will all smart filters be applied to the smart layer with the replaced smart object.
Or if by CC Auto save Layer you referring to CC Generate feature you can disable that feature.
I have no idea what your referring to when you write "CC auto-saves the layer" being a feature. I know CC Generate will write layers out as web files but that more a Web feature then a 3d feature. Where do you see your layer being saved? -
How does one turn off link auto-update?
When we have an ID file open in CS6 and make a Photoshop edit, the link seems to auto-update. We don't like this as we'd rather 'watch' the update so if comes in as expected, etc.. Can one turn off link auto-update? Thanks!
Are you making the edit by selecting the graphic frame and then choosing Edit Original? This will always auto-update.
If that's not it, you might try clicking Preferences > General > Reset All Warning Dialogs -
InDesign 5 keeps crashing (updating links, exporting to PDF)
Hey there,
I need help making sense of the below crash report. My InDesign 5 keeps crashing, whenever I want to update links, export to PDF and similar. It runs on a new MacBook Pro, Lion 10.7.4. I've reinstalled the whole software package as well as InDesign separately a couple of times. Tried the update downloads on adobe.com as well, but I got an error message, when trying to install them.

I have recently installed DW CS4 for our web designer. I have the update links preference set to prompt. When I moved pdf file to another folder it never asked me to update links. It only said am I sure I wanted to move the file. Should this work when moving a document file?

A friend asked me to edit something in an indesign-file. He sent me the file but no images and all links where broken. No problem I was just editing som text. I did this and returned the file (I know it is not the way to work with indesign). He checked it and was satisfied and sent it to print. But there was a problem with one of the images. Originaly he had an image on a different harddrive and I happend to have an image with the same file-name in my temporary folder and this image was treated as not broken but only updated. I did not notice this and I had not changed anything other than text so why should this be saved? There should not have been a problem when he got the file back because he should see that there was a broken link or Indesign should update this on its own. Well he just happend to have a different file with the same name in his folder and Indesign just picked this file instead, it reported it as an updated link but he just accepted this and the end result is a missprint.
I know that this scenario is a bit stupid but I was wondering if it is possible to open a file and force it to only save what I truly change and ignore broken links?

ThanksGo to the File Handling section of your ID preferences and uncheck Find Missing Links and Check Links Before Opeing Document.
Once you've done this, though, you're on your own to verify the links in the Links panel manually from then on for ALL files you open. -

Indesign 5.5 crash issues when updating links
I am having crash issues when updating links and I don’t know how to trouble shoot the issues.
I have adobe creative suite 5.5 and I am using a third party plug in called wordsflow to allow updating of MS word documents without losing formatting in Indesign.
I have been in contact with the plug creator and they seem to think that the way the indesign importer is handling images is causing the problem.
I am not a particularly experienced Indesign user. How do I go about working out what the issue is?At first it does appear that the plug in is the problem, however i suspect that the builders of the plugin are correct, in that it is the way in design in handling images in links.
the problem is worse when any image in anchored any where with in the document.
when the updating links screen pops up, the point where it freezes and then indesign crashes is infact on a linked image file consistantly.
broswing other indesign link issues it appears i am not the only person with image link problems.
My question is aside form turning off the plug in, what else can i do to search for the potential issue? -
InDesign CS5 Crash On Updating Links (Windows 7)
Upon opening an InDesign CS5 file, if it finds updated links, it freezes before fully completing the updating process. I then have to force-close InDesign (using Ctrl-Alt-Del). When I then relaunch InDesign, the file opens with no problems and the links have been updated correctly. This happens every time there is any kind of updated link. Brand new document, created yesterday, from scratch, in CS5. Brand new installation of both Windows 7 (32-bit) and CS5 suite. Intel core duo, 2GB of RAM, 900GB of free disk space on a 1TB drive. Suggestions most welcome.
The good news is: as of today I have switched over to an "all PDF" workflow for all vector graphics that I bring into InDesign, for all current projects starting today. It was a bit of a pain to convert my entire 150-page document with 220 EPS links over to PDF, but now that it is done it is working very nicely and we are finally "up to date" after jettisoning the evidently dog-eared EPS format.
As you suggested, I am importing multi-page PDF, and then selecting the individual pages in the InDesign Import options.
The bad news is that the InDesign is *still* crashing when updating links (which are now to PDF files and no longer EPS). As before, this problem goes away if I set Display preferences for vector graphics to "Proxy" rather than "High Resolution." Because of various deadlines, and because this is not a fatal problem and has a workaround, I am going to ignore the issue for a while and try to get some actual work done.

Iam using the update() function in the Link class to update a dataLink in the document. But when I execute the update command, Indesign throws an

How to (auto)-update Adobe CS4
A few days ago, Adobe CS4 was installed on my new Dell XPS computer (Windows 7).
Since then, there was no autoupdate of any of CS programs. I tried to update manually (Help>updagte) from CS 4.
I got the error (see the attachment). I got the same error when I tried to manually update of Acrobat.
