CS4 InDesign "Export" anything but: can't export to anything but PDF

After two uninstallation/reinstallations of the whole frickin' CS4 Master Collection, and deleting the Defaults file repeatedly, InDesign still refuse to Export anything other than the first format that displays (usually, PDF -- although once I got it to display XML).
Go to Export, select INX as type, file name shows as *.pdf - swipe off PDF, even insert ".INX", click Save and the "Export Adobe PDF" dialog displays. It's not only driving me nuts, but I have a printer who is on CS3 and I have a brochure that needs to be printed, now...
Bless anyone who has a clue or idea or registry hack...
Later: Export works fine from my laptop. The only difference is that, yes, I got suckered into downloading the final-that-wasn't, but had left CS3 installed. Re-downloaded and installed the final-that-is, uninstalled CS3, re-installed the final-that-is, then went on to a couple of more reinstallations (on my workstation). For the laptop, I'd initially uninstalled CS3, then went through the final-that-wasn't and final-that-is dance.
I suspect there is a registry key somewhere that I can't locate...

>Note to Peter: the first download release of the Master Collection had a beta version of Photoshop. Uninstalling the whole thing was the only way to fix it.
Ouch. And that probably explains what happened to the OP. A corollary to my above post is that people who download the first release version (or install from the disks before the first service release) are only slightly less at risk for problems than beta testers. When we work on the cutting edge, occasionally we shed a little blood. :)

  • CS4 InDesign Export Book for Digital Edition - Using TOC

We have been using InDesign 3, now CS4 Version 6.0.2, to create book PDFs without any issues for a few years.
Recently we tried to use the new feature "Export to Digital Edition". It works correctly as long as we do not select "Include InDesign TOC entries".
If we do select that option, then the job ends with the message "All documents are missing or failed to export". Tried different options, looked around the web for any clues, but no one seems to have come across such a condition.
In case it is relevant, we are using Vista Premium operating syste.
Any suggestion or help is welcome.
    Thank you,
    Martin

While I've used the feature, I've never used it with a TOC. You should upgrade to 6.0.3 to make sure that it wasn't fixed there.

  • Why is InDesign exporting HTML instead of PDF?

    Hello,
I recently upgraded to InDesign CC 2014.  My first project that I created is being exported as a HTML link and not the actual PDF file.
Is it something I'm doing wrong?  Also, none of my saved file icons are showing with the InDesign file icon.  I've linked them with InDesign, however when I click on them they do not open and I get an error.  Is it possible this has something to do with it?
This is incredibly frustrating as I need to this project printed.
Does anyone have any idea what is going on?

So, looks like I figured it out.  The file associations is what did it.  For some reason it was it was using Firefox to view the PDF.  I wondered if it was doing due to some update with Acrobat.
So I reinstalled Acrobat.  I saw that when I exported the file the extension changed from .html to .pdf.
So then I right clicked on the icon>properties and it let me change the associated program to Acrobat instead of Firefox.
I'm not sure if that is what needed to happen, but it appears (at least for the moment) that everything is fixed.  I'm going to go tomorrow to see if I can get it printed.  Hopefully everything will have exported correctly.

  • Indesign Export SWF Import into pdf poor quality

    Hello!
I'm designing an interactive pdf portfolio.
I have exported the indesign file as an SWF at 300dpi 100% resoultion.
I have then imported the SWF back into indesign and exported as an PDF (interactive) again 300dpi
When viewed in the html file . Quality is perfect, however when viewed in the PDF quality is awful. No idea whats happening to cause this issue.
    I am using CS5.5 / Version 7.5.2 & viewing the PDF in Acrobat X / Version 10.1.7
    Can anyone advise?
here is a link to the file:  http://samrowe.net/pdfswf.pdf

In you have Acrobat, to eliminate any issue of swf degradation [when placing swf in ID and exporting pdf] you can add mulimedia swf directly into a PDF.
But, even with a successful placement of swf into a PDF, you will have no control of your recipient's successful playback due to versions of Acrobat/Reader, multimedia preferences and security settings.

  • Can I make an InDesign CS4 .swf export scale depending on the open size of a browser?

Hi there.  I would like to make my inDesign CS4 .swf file able to scale in accordance with the open size of a browser.  When I have used Flash previously changing the size of the document to 100% achieved this effect.  However, I'm not having much luck with this approach with my inDesign CS4 .swf export.  I'm loathe to export it as an XML file for Flash as I want to keep my fancy page turns. Any help would be very much appreciated.  I'm not very fluent in Flash-speak so I'd also appreciate it if anyone offering a solution could t-a-l-k r-e-a-l s-l-o-w.

This is quite old thread, I don´t have those source codes anymore... besides many people still uses monitors with width of 1024, 1219px wide magazine would clip in those monitors, so I don´t suggest to use it without shrinking....
Anyway, if you want to improve positioning of your SWF, you have at least two way to do it
    1) Go to free http://www.bobbyvandersluis.com/swfobject/generator/index.html and create a new html-wrapper for your project
    2) If that´s not enough or you want some extra features like zoom, print or search, go to http://www.edocker.com and download a free trial of eDocker.
ps. eDocker is in Adobe MAX Awards final, if you want to help it to win.... go to

  • Indesign getting crash while exporting because of bad pdf inside file.

    Hi,
My indesing is getting crash while exporting to pdf. I have link to pdf file inside the indesign file, when i export that indesign file to pdf indesign is getting crash without showing any error message. If i place another pdf file in same location then it is going fine and i can able to get the output pdf file. Please suggest me how can i check and correct that pdf file and is there any solution to this. Please help me i have thousands of indesign pages with the same issue. If you want pdf i can send it to your mail id. please i need fix for this problem.
    Thanks
    Kiran

For all of you lurkers, Kiran sent me a copy of the PDF, and it looks like I found the problem (and learned a new technique which may help others in the same boat).
I tried re-frying the file by creating an eps and distilling, but the result was the same, then I tried exporting from CS3, just for fun, and it worked, but I realized the PDF had been cropped, so I started trying differnt sections and isolated an area that failed, though that wasn't particularly helpful.
Acrobat preflight didn't find anything that looked odd or problematic, and then I decided to run Examine Document. It came up with MetaData (no surprise) and also two items under a heading of Deleted and Cropped objects, with no preview or description. I unselected the MetaData from the list of found stuff, them clicked the Remove button in the Examine Document panel, and resaved (and while you have the opportunity to give it a new name, doing so doesn't remove the stuff untill you do the whole procedure again and save with the same name). Placed the new version of the PDF in a new file and exported no problem.

  • Indesign Exporting PDF to Web for Magento website Troubleshoot.

Hi guys, usually I'm the one throwing advice to people rather than recieving it. I'm currently working for a company that uses a magento website. I was hired less than a month ago and apparently, no one knows who created the previous pdf's but we'll get to that... There's alot of problems going on here.
First and foremost, the website we have has a link that you can click on to bring up these documents for viewing/printing. The predecessors and I upload them in pdf format and need to be pdfs. I use indesign to create/edit these older pdf's. When I export the files and then view them they look great (in acrobat). Then after I upload them, there are many things that can go wrong, but they ALWAYS go wrong.
As a "high-quality print" pdf they all crash saying "an internal error occured". The steps that happen are, they begin to load, and according to the load bar at the bottom they get about halfway or so (this is on a Mac). Then a white screen and the error shows up. This is the same for Windows as well (except the load bar is a circle and fills all the way to 11o'clock). It tends to render all the way or halfway with Windows but never looks right.
As an interactive pdf, the same happens as above, but it's much faster to crash and a second error pops up about acrobat (I can't remember the exact wording but I figure that it's in direct correlation with the first error message). Also, there is no interactive part to my pdf, it's just some basic shapes with fill, multiple pictures and some text.
All other options go all crazy. Some load with glitches, some don't. Here's a screen shot of the best looking one....
This is based off the PC because it actually shows something, which usually loads it as normal colors. Those lines however are always there and always inverted colors.
Now for the screwy part, because I'm a graphic designer I automatically blame the website and internet stuff, but we have figured out it MUST be a pdf because of a few things.
    1. JPGs load correctly, even when the files are larger than the pdfs. This specific one was 3MB as a jpeg compared to the 2.6MB pdf. We can't use jpgs because they're multiple page documents...
    2. Single page high-quality print pdfs seem to have a 50-50 shot of loading correctly. The other thing is the older pdf's (as in before I got here) are loaded up fine and work great.
    3. EPS's are WAY too big and are saved as single pages as well.
    4. GIF's and anything else, the quality of the images suffer and they need to be print capable.
So it's gotta be pdf or I'm going to be in a world of hurt.
Here's a few more things in case you're wondering. I've got all images and internal pdf's linked properly. I've saved them embedded and not embedded. The only thing missing is a font, but that shouldn't change anything? I've saved it as a PDF 5,6,7 & 8. No avail... I've saved as RGB and CMYK, pretty much anything and everything I've done, I've tried, I've failed. I'm out of ideas... maybe somehow rastercizing/flattening images into one layer would work? But I don't know how to do that in ID. By the way, I have access to the CS6 suite in both Mac and PC so I can work either way.
Thanks and sorry for the lengthy situation, I just figure it'll help solve the problem quicker.
    A Beatles Fan

Given that you have no problems viewing the PDF files directly in Acrobat after they are exported from InDesign, I think you can safely assume that the problem isn't InDesign, the format of the contents (whether EPS, JPEG, PDF, etc.), the options used to export the PDF, etc.
The symptoms would point to the PDF file being corrupted either as part of the upload to the website or in the download.
Have you tried doing a file compare – even just a comparision of the physical file length – between the PDF file directly after export from InDesign and the PDF file you download from the website? My guess is that the length is different and likewise, the contents differ.
One area to look at is that of whether either the upload or download function of this website is trying to treat PDF files as ASCII files and thus, mucking around with what it thinks are line endings – CR, LF, CR/LF, etc. – making “fixes” that in fact corrupt the PDF files. PDF files are always binary files. All network operations with such files should be done with binary protocols (FTP is one file transfer protocol that often messes up with this).
Check into this and let us know what you find.

  • Indesign export of PDFs - images in pdf fragmented, missing metadata

Can anyone help with this one?
We use InDesign CS3 to create PDF 1.6's, directly from InDesign export. The metadata contained in the images on the layout normally are visible in the PDF when you control click and select "show metadata" on the image with Acrobat's touch up object tools. Ocassionally, there is an unknown problem in the process where a given image will "fragment" -- when you click on it in the PDF, a frame surrounds only part of the image, and there's no "show metadata" choice to select. This is kiling us because we doconstruct those PDFs and put them into our long term archive, and the metadata is missing there!
Anyone know of any reason InDesign export would give such results?
    Any help would be appreicated!
    Thanks.

    Thanks Bob,
We're just reviewing detailed data now, so it's unclear whether we have any cases where it's a placed PDF (most are tiffs, psds, etc). Good point - if the pdf within is a 1.3 that would be a problem. . .same too with a placed ID file, though I know for sure we're not doing that. I'll post what we find.
We are ok with regard to version patches. But, Bob, do you by chance know of any specific bugfixes (i haven't read the release notes) that address this? that would help to know too, so as to rule out some times in the past before the patch was applied where the problem occured.
Meanwhile David W. Goodrich's reminder of adobe technote 332920 if i read it right, suggests non raster images would fail to pass metadta, at least in CS2, i wonder if that applies to cs3 too. . .

  • Indesign CS2 Crashes when I try to export a document as pdf

I'm using Indesign CS2 on a G5 using OS X version 10.4.11. As i try to export my document indesign completely crashes after I click the 'export' button in the pdf options window. I've tried saving using different pdf options and different document types but it still happens?

Does your document contain any EPS files..? If so try re-saving them. InDesign can work with native photoshop & illustrator files.
Failing that check your fonts as there may be a corrupt one lurking about...

  • InDesign Export to PDF and PDF Destinations/Bookmarks

    Hello all,
I am new to this forum and am not sure where the most appropriate location for this question is. But, here goes:
We are adding Bookmarks to an InDesign Doc then exporting it to a PDF. In the Acrobat Reader and the IE Acrobat reader the bookmarks work just fine. Here his where the problem is. I have to link to the PDF's bookmarks from a web page. I have come to find out that I can't link directly to a bookmark but I have to link to a "Destination."
The PDF Exporter or InDesign adds a Destination name that is not the same as the bookmark name. It includes the indd file name and the part of the sentience that the book mark is next to.
I have used Adobe Acrobat Professional to create a custom Destination that is one word without spaces. I am able to link to that destination but I can't link to any of the destinations that either InDesign or the PDF exporter created.
Does anyone know how to force the Destinations names to be set to the name of the bookmark that is being mapped to it? Or, how to link to a bookmark name rather then a Destination.
I have also did some searching for some VB to Acrobat scripting and found that I can't edit Destination names.
This is for an on going project that is sure to have a lot of updates. We do not want to have to goto Acrobat and fix the Destinations by hand for every update. Plus, we don't want to link to the page number because we are never sure when pages will change and again do not want to always fix the PDF or HTML index page every time.
    Thank you for your time,
    Michael Hamilton
    Learning Designs Inc

Michael, I've got one solution that meets my needs but maybe only part of your needs:
    Buy AutoBookmark from Evermap:  http://www.evermap.com/autobookmark.asp#Creating%20Destinations%20From%20Bookmarks
It's a plugin to Adobe Acrobat (not Reader), but it works only in MS Windows, not Mac.
After you've installed that plugin, Acrobat's Plug Ins menu has a Destinations menu item with some choices you're going to use.
Open with Acrobat, the PDF file that has the destination names that have that bothersome <filename>.indd prefix.  Use the Plug Ins > Destinations menu's item to export the destinations as a plain text file.
Edit the resulting plain text file with any plain text editor.  Globally search and replace the filename prefix with nothing.  Save and close that file.
Back in the Acrobat window of your PDF file, use the Destinations menu's choice to delete all destinations.
Now use the Destinations menu to import the destinations file you just edited.
    Voila.
BUT the part of your problem that this won't solve, is the presence of a portion of the sentence in the destination.  That's not a problem for me, because I'm creating all my destinations as parts of the sentence.

  • Devanagari font in layed out in Indesign (using IndicPlus) does not export correctly to a PDF.

    Namaste InDesign gurus,
I have a problem at hand. Wondering if anyone has encoutered similar problem before? Any help is greatly appreciated. And if you're in San Francisco bay area - I can buy you a lunch :-)
Short description: Devanagari font in layed out in Indesign (using IndicPlus) does not export correctly to a PDF. All the ligatures are assembled and displayed in the PDF.
Adobe Indesign Version: InDesign CS5 Design Premium - regular U.S. version (not ME).
    Steps I took:
I purchased CS5 Design Premium and also purchased the IndicPlus plugin to author sanskrit documents in InDesign. I create Sanskrit text using either of the following methods.
    1) Itranslator
    2) Paste the devanagari from the Itranslator directly into InDesign or paste it first into MSWord and then copy from MSWord and paste it to Indesign.
It doesn't matter how I paste it. After I apply the IndicPlus character/paragraph style so that the sanskrit looks good in InDesign, when I try to export it to a PDF. The PDF does not display the ligatures currectly. It just lists all the characters in order without assembling.
I've spent a lot of money buying CS5, IndicPlus and then I can't even create a simple PDF document from InDesign. It is very frustrating.
Has anyone been able to successfully export a sanscrit document from InDesign PDF ?
(Please let me know if my problem description needs more fleshing out).
I could create the PDF from MSWord directly but I'm trying to use indesign to layout my book. If InDesign cannot export to PDF I'll just have to use MSWord for my book layout. I've spend probably scores of hours trying to learn InDeisn and formatting my book content - seems like it is all going to be waste.
Is MSWord the best choice or only choice for laying out books that have sanskrit text in them?
    -Ravi

Has anyone been able to successfully export a sanscrit document from InDesign PDF ?
Not Sanskrit, no, but plenty of Hindi, Nepali, Marathi, and other languages written in Devanagari script - so it should be possible. I don't even use IndicPlus, which by most accounts makes working with Indic text much easier.
    1) Itranslator
I've never seen this, but a quick Google led me to the homepage of ITranslator for Windows, where I saw this:
Itranslator 99 (Build 1.3.0.86)  & New Beta Version
uses 8-bit true type fonts and is compatible
    with Windows 95/98/ME/NT/2000/XP.
    For more information, click here.
Itranslator 2003 (Build 2.0.0.38) & New Beta Version
uses 16-bit Unicode-compatible fonts and is working
    only on Windows 2000 / XP / Server 2003.
    For more information, click here.
So, if you're using ITranslator 99, there's the problem - those "8-bit true type fonts" won't work in InDesign. Can you post a sample of the text you're trying to paste into InDesign? Name the font(s) you are using, both in Word and in Indesign, and if possible make a small sample of the text available for us to test. It's also possible that InDesign is using a substituted font, which could cause this problem. So, if the font name in InDesign has brackets around it, you know that InDesign doesn't actually have that font installed and is auto-substituting. Also, if you go to View -> Screen Mode -> Normal and the text is highlighted pink, you know that the font has dropped. (Unless the highlighting for dropped fonts was turned off - check in Edit -> Preferences -> Composition and make sure that "Substituted Fonts" is checked.
Also, for what it's worth, is there any way you could Place your text instead of copying and pasting? This may be cause of your problem - but even though it probably isn't, it's still worth a try.
Lastly - no, I've found InDesign to be superior for typesetting for almost all languages, but the learning curve is pretty steep, and many of the problems faced by people working in non-English languages are not easy to research when you have a problem.

  • InDesign export PDF path should follow document path

I love InDesign totally. Well, almost...
I often work on several documents over the course of a day, or sometimes I won't work in InDesign for several days. In either case, InDesign exports the PDF to the last path exported to rather than following the path of the document I am working on. I find this mildly annoying to highly aggravating, depending on my work load. (I can't say how many times I have "lost" a PDF I just exported, only to find some time later that it saved to the last export location, which often has nothing to do with the document I'm exporting from.)
Is there any setting I can change for this? I don't mind mucking in the registry if I have to.
    Thank you,
    Bruce

I'm pretty sure that would be scriptable. I don't write scripts myself, but I had Dave do one for me last year for correcting homework. It does all sorts of neat stuff like locking existing layers, adding a new one, changing the default text color and saving a new version of the file into the old directory so pretty much all I need to do is run it and type my comments.
Post on the scripting forum for more help.

  • InDesign exports to interactive PDF in spreads only

I saw a suggestion in the comments section of the CS5 help file to start a discussion--so here we go...
I've created a newsletter for print in spreads, but when I try to export to an interactive PDF, there is no option to turn off spreads. It would seem that Layout-->single page would get me what I want, but it still pops up firmly in readers spreads.
This PDF is intended for the Web, and I need it to be single page for those who want to print it--it's a real devil to try to print a tabloid-size page onto letter-sized paper.
Eugene Tyson recommended changing the document setup to turn off facing pages--but, as he said, that can present other problems.
I saw that this would probably not be considered a bug--well, how about considering it a simple error? Please fix this, Adobe!

  • Indesign - Exporting PDF which has Transparency getting error in PITSTOP

    Hi all,
Recently we are getting jobs which has" transparency" - effects used. We are getting problem when we run PITSTOP.
We have an Indesign file with transparency in Opening page of an article. One background Image is there, over the image a strip which is drawn using "box" and applied "Transparency - Multiply" effect so that the image can see through it.
We exported the file using distiller "PDF/X-1a" and created PDF. Once we run the PITSTOP to check the PDF we are getting error.
"Effective resolution of color or grayscale image is less than 200 dpi"
This error is showing in the" Stip" which is drawn in Indesign.
The problem here is when we export the file in "PDF/X-1a" the transparency getting flattern because of this the strip become image and showing low res. in PITSTOP.
We have increased the Transparency Flatten Preset Option from 1200 to 2400, still the problem was not solved.
Expecting a solution for this all types of suggestions are welcome.
    Shaji

    Shaji,
I think I wasn't clear in my last post. The mesh resolution should NOT be below 200. But it sounds like that isn't the issue after all.
When you select that background image in InDesign and look at the Info Panel, what do you see for "effective" ppi?
