  • Clean install without disks

I'm sure this has been covered before but I can seem to find the answer. I need to do a clean "factory reset" install on my macbook pro, but I don't have the install disks. I suspect there's a way to do this without the disks. How's it done?

I don't believe you can reinstall without reinstall media. You need the DVD or CDs that came with your machine.

  • What's the proper way to remove CS3 after CS4 install without screwing up Acrobat?

During CS4 installation, I had some serial number issues with Acrobat. It turns out that even though Acrobat is part of the creative suite, the licensing for it is different. I've got all of that sorted out now and CS4 is successfully installed. Now I need to remove CS3, but I don't want to remove any shared components that would disable or affect Acrobat.
Should I just remove the CS3 folders in my Applications folder or should I use the CS3 Uninstaller?

I can't run any of the CS3 apps because of the Acrobat licensing issue that I mentioned earlier. Therefore, they're just taking up hard drive space now. I also have a suspicion that CS4 and CS3 might be sharing resources? Can't quantify that but quitting CS4 apps takes forever and shutting down the machine after quitting CS4 apps takes even longer.

  • CS4 Installation without disk?

I have the disk but it has never worked.  I had to download from Adobe and then enter serial number.  I had to wipe computer clean and now need to reinstall - don't want to puchase 6.  How do I download 4?

use your serial num to activate.
if you have a dl problem, you didn't follow all 7 steps.  re-read and retry.

  • Erase and Install without Disk?

Is it possible to reinstall the OS X without the CD? You see, my father lost it before he gave me the laptop.
And if it is not possible, is there any way that I can get another copy of the CD? Perhaps if I had proof of purchase?
    Thanks

Only if you have a retail installer disc that can install a version of OS X compatible with the hardware. Otherwise you will either need the original software discs that came with the computer or purchase a retail copy of OS X. If the the computer is not a Late 2008 MacBook then you can install Leopard by purchasing a retail copy from an Apple Store or Apple retailer.
You can purchase replacement discs for the computer by calling AppleCare.

  • Install without Disks

    Hello
I have a 13" macbook (intel) and I want to install lepoard (probably snow leopard) but I have a problem. The cd/dvd drive is broken and will not work.
I really dont want to purchase a new one as I only ever use cd/dvd drives these days when I change OS whether it be Mac or PC.
Is there an upgrade option that I can use to install leopard if I purchase a licence etc.
    Help!!!!

If you mean a downloadable version of the full installer for either Leopard or Snow Leopard, no, there is not and will never be one available since the Mac OS X installer must be able to boot from the disk to install.
    You have some options:
    1) If you have an external hard drive and a friend with a Mac, buy the retail Leopard or Snow Leopard disk, connect your hard drive to your friend's Mac and use Disk Utility to restore the Leopard/Snow Leopard disk to the external hard drive. You can then boot your MacBook from the external drive and install that way.
    2) If your MacBook has Firewire, you can put it into Target Disk Mode and connect it to another Mac from which you can install Leopard/Snow Leopard on the MacBook. I don't recommend this method since it's not always reliable (the installer will attempt to install drivers based on the hardware in the Mac you're using and so you may not get the correct drivers for the MacBook), but people have found that it works for them.
    3) Buy an external USB DVD drive. Many people have had success booting the Mac OS X installer DVD in external drives.

  • How re-install OS X Lion fresh without disks?

Something is wrong with programs or something on my Mac and I want to completely wipe the hard drive and start over with a fresh copy of Lion.  I did a Time Machine backup last night and will then just bring over files one at a time from that external drive as needed.
On someone's suggestion, I held down the Alt/Option key when powering on and chose the option to re-install the OS.  It said it would take 5+ hrs so I let it run through the night.  But this morning I still saw all of my icons, settings, etc.  I want to COMPLETELY start fresh.
How can I do this, please.. especially with no disks?
    Thanks for any help.

    Hi rcook349,
id suggest doing as Colin mentioned, and then some:
    1. Using the reformat the drive option
    2. Installing fresh from your original OS disks (you mention you want to install without the disks, but the Lion.app upgrade file is an application which requires a base install - Im not sure how to make this install file bootable)
    3. Running the Lion upgrade
    4. Running the TimeMachine restores
Below is a link to a step by step (fresh) reinstallation guide for Snow Leopard:

Tina Hadley did you migrate/transfer your applications over to your new Macintosh?  If so this could cause problems with your serial number being recognized.  Please run the available uninstallers located in Applications/Utilities/Adobe Installers folder.  Once this is done you will also want to run the CC Cleaner Tool.  Details on the use of the CC Cleaner Tool can be found at Use the CC Cleaner Tool to solve installation problems | CC, CS3-CS6 - http://helpx.adobe.com/creative-suite/kb/cs5-cleaner-tool-installation-problems.html.

I have cs4 installed on my old computer, i have since lost the disk and serial #s. Is there any way to recover this information and install the programs on my new computer? I used my old computer for college and haven't used it in awhile, now I have a job that can benefit from having those programs. I was wondering if ADOBE keeps records or something to where I can download the programs on my new MacBook and use my old serial #s.

  • With CS4 installed already, can I uninstall InDesignCS3 without affecting the CS4 suite?

With CS4 installed already, can I uninstall InDesignCS3 without affecting the CS4 suite?
InDesignCS3 was downloaded from the internet. CS4 suite was installed from CDs. Both are currently on my computer. How can I uninstall InDesignCS3?

Just use the add/remove programs feature in the control panel, but I would strongly suggest that you don't do this. If you ever need to supply a CS3 file you'll be sorry you uninstalled it.

  • IWorks -- any way to re-install without the disks?

iWorks -- any way to re-install without the disks (especially Pages)?

Downgrading is not supported by Apple.  Try resetting your iPhone by pressing and holding the sleep/wake button and the home button for 10-15 seconds until the Apple logo appears, ignore the red slider.  Then turn back on. You won't lose any data doing the reset.

  • Upgrade to CS4 when CS2 disks lost

I lost my CS2 disks, but Adobe Web Support said I could still purchase the CS4 upgrade instead of the full version because I have the CS2 serial numbers.  The problem is, I'm upgrading to a brand new computer.  In order for the CS4 upgrade software to work, doesn't the computer need to have the CS2 software installed on it?  Is there a way to get the CS2 software from my old computer to my new computer without disks, or am I forced to buy the full version for my new computer?

No, it doesn't need to be installed. The serial number should be fine for verification.
Did you register CS2? If so, and you have a problem, you can call Adobe for help with the installation.

  • Creating a bootable Lion install disc/disk and using it

    Hi all,
Below is a copy of a method ds store posted for creating a bootable Lion install disc. Some questions:
    1. Is this a polished final version of the process, or are there other steps which could/should be added?
    2. Are there any disadvantages to going this route instead of installing directly onto a Mac?
    3. After creating a Lion install disc/disk via this method and using this saved dmg to install Lion on a Mac, will it set up the Mac exactly the same way it would by downloading/installing directly from the Apple Store (sounds like a "duh" question, but nothing would surprise me with Lion)?
    4. Exact size of this dmg (in case I want to use a flash drive instead)?
I have been avoiding Lion, hoping it would shape up. I'm still not satisfied and will not run it on my main machines. (Of course ymmv; I'm not looking to be talked into or out of using Lion.) However, I am ******* (hmmm, I guess l-u-s-t-i-n-g is a bad word!) over a new Mac Mini, which will have Lion installed, with no chance of running SL on it due to the new hardware revision. Thus, I'm either going to have to make peace with Lion or forget about a new Mini. I guess I'll have to give Lion a try, but I still don't want to actually run it on any of my machines; thus, I want to run it from an external drive, playing with it as I have time/desire, leading to more questions.
    5. Using the install disc/disk created above, will it set up Lion on a DVD, flash drive, or external HD exactly as it would on a Mac (Recovery Disk, etc.)?
    6. How much space is needed on a destination disc/disk to install Lion?
    7. Is it possible to boot from a different volume, mount this dmg, and install Lion from it?
    8. Any advantages/disadvantages doing it this way (#7) as opposed to booting from the Lion install disc/disk created above?
    9. Another method I'm thinking of using is to (after cloning my SL installation) actually install Lion on my MBP over my current SL installation (shudders violently ), clone it to an external HD, then erase/zero the MBP's HD and clone my SL install back to my MBP. Has anyone done this? Again, I'm concerned that Lion will do something goofy and leave some kind of footprint behind, like maybe messing with firmware; cloning my SL installation back to my internal HD would not reverse a firmware change.
    10. Any constructive suggestions on anything related to any of these steps is welcome!
Yes, I've searched and read a number of responses, but I'm hoping much of the "discovery" phase is over, and there are some "solid"/refined answers by now. My bottom line is to be able to play with Lion without having to depend on it.
    Thanks!
    Backup Lion Bootable 10.7  Disk
Purchase and download Lion from the Mac App Store on any Lion compatible Mac running Snow Leopard.
Right click on “Mac OS X     Lion”     installer and choose the option to     “Show Package Contents.”
Inside the Contents folder     that     appears you will find a SharedSupport     folder and inside the     SharedSupport folder     you will find the “InstallESD.dmg.” This is         the Lion boot disc image we have all been waiting for.
Copy “InstallESD.dmg” to         another folder like the Desktop.
Launch Disk Utility and click     the     burn button.
Select the copied “InstallESD.dmg” as the image to     burn,     insert a standard sized 4.7 GB DVD,     and wait for your new Lion Boot     Disc to come     out toasty hot.
With this disc you can boot any Lion compatible Mac, andinstall10.7 just like you installed previous version of Mac OS X. Youcan even use Disk Utility's Restore function to image your Lion bootdisc image onto a external drive suitable for performing a cleaninstall on a optical-drive-less MacBook Air, or Mac mini server.

DVD: no, flash drive: if it's large enough, external hard drive: yes
    6. How much space is needed on a destination disc/disk to install Lion?
    Whatever Apple minimum requirements are.
    7. Is it possible to boot from a different volume, mount this dmg, and install Lion from it?
possibly, never tried it, it is a dmg so it's a volume all to itself, except it can't install to the same media it's on and can only install to something formatted with GUID and a OS X extended format, like a flash drive or hard drive large enough.
DVD's can't be formatted with a GUID EFI partiton
    8. Any advantages/disadvantages doing it this way (#7) as opposed to booting from the Lion install disc/disk created above?
Speed limitation of the media and bus your using, USB 1 is a slower than a hard drive with 7,200 RPM on a Firewire 800 port

The problems come from installing Lion over a existing Snow Leopard setup that isn't quite pristine enough for Lions quirkyness, has tweaks or other software installed that breaks 10.7, requiring you to fix it.
You can try it, you've got the 10.6 clone to option boot off of and restore from.
Cloning back and forth is a performance enhancer, not a problem solver.
Ideally it's best to clone 10.6, disconnect, zero and install 10.6, same user name, then up to 10.6.8, then to 10.7, then install programs from fresh sources/copies and then files returned last from backup off the clone (no migration assistant or it brings trouble back)
This will ensure the best possible performance possible with the least trouble as everything is wiped and installed fresh. Only problem being your files it there is something wrong with them, which is easy to remedy to the cause as it's the only thing not pristine.
Once you've got a pristine system, then clone that twice, once for a immediate update other for falling back a week, two weeks or even a month back.
Has anyone done this? Again, I'm concerned that Lion will do something goofy and leave some kind of footprint behind, like maybe messing with firmware; cloning my SL installation back to my internal HD would not reverse a firmware change.
Firmware is hardware specific not OS specific, of course it's possible a old version of a OS won't work with newer firmware, like 10.5 for instance perhaps because Apple has dropped all work on PPC code.
10.6 and 10.7 are just fine with most all present firmware, however there will be a time where a new firmware update could disallow 10.6, likely when iOS X 10.8 Bobcat arrives.
    10. Any constructive suggestions on anything related to any of these steps is welcome!

Cloning only clones the Lion OS X Partition, not the Lion Recovery Partition.
A comptuer that is Lion capable will boot off a media with no Lion Recovery Partition.
You need to create a Lion Disk Assistant USB which copies your Lion Recovery Partition.
    It's in my post.

As a result, while you type a wrong password, the password hint will pops up below the password input box. Based on the password hint, you can think of your origin password.  As seen above, my password hint is email [email protected], and my Windows 8 login password is the same as the password of email.
