CS4 Lightroom Memory

thinking about the following purchase:
Windows Vista Home Prmium SP 1 (64-bit)
Intel Core 2 Duo Processor E7500 [2.93GHz,  3MB L2, 1066MHz FSB]
8GB DDR3-1066MHz SDRAM [4 DIMMS]
512 MB ATI Radeon HD 4350 [DVI, HDMI, VGA]
will this be enough to run both programs smoothly.
also currently have a Samsung SyncMaster 220wm as well as thinking about HP w2558hc monitors.
read somewhere on this board that a quad processor will NOT show that much difference in speed. not into gaming or 3D graphics which is why video card not upgraded more.
Thank you.
Jim

thank you guys, I appreciate your input.  when considering the professional version the highlights I've read state better for networking (even home network), gaming, security etc (haven't read in depth). I have no intention of networking, even at home and not into gaming at all, have never played a game on line or even a computer game. does it make a significant difference for Photoshop and light room as well.  if so, or as mentioned above, Windows 7, will definitely highly consider.
thanks again.

With 3 Gig of Ram, why is it that Lightroom won't utilize it? I am bothered by the fact that lightroom only allocates less than a gig of ram for use by lightroom.  My images are all RAW and 12 megapixels. Performing extensive edits really bogs down the system where sometimes it becomes unuseable.
Does anyone have a workaround?  Is there a way to allocate all system resources to LR when LR is in use?  This really bothers me considering that I exceed LR's system requirements but the program itself restricts my ability to really use my system effectively when running the program.
Thank you all in advance for your assistance.

32-bit apps [on 32/64-bit Windows] cannot see more than 2Gb [of the theoretical 4Gb] minus the space for all the libraries and whatnot. Additionally, 3Gb is not a lot of physical memory for a modern Windows install. Everything running has to share that memory, so it is unlikely that a user app like Lr is going to get more than 1.4Gb total.
Either you do not have 64-bit hardware, a 64-bit OS or the version of Lr that is running is 32-bit.
My understanding is that the 64-bit version of Lr is a separate install. My guess is that the installer detected a 32-bit system and installed the appropriate version.
[Edit to clarify that the real 2Gb limit is for Windows only.]

  • Preserving layers between CS4 & Lightroom

I made a test psd file with three layers in Photoshop CS4. I imported that file to Lightroom 2.5. When I opened the file from lightroom into CS4 with the option 'Edit a Copy with Lightroom Adjustments', the file was flattened i.e. all layers merged. I shut the file down in CS4. When I checked opening the file directly into CS4, the layers were preserved. If I added a curves layer to the flattened file in CS4 after it had been opened from Lightroom, and saved it withe same file name, closed it down in CS4, and reopened it from Lightroom into CS4 using 'Edit a Copy with Lightroom Adjustments', again the image was flattened.
Conclusion - Layered files do not have their layers preserved when imported to Lightroom and trasferred to CS4 for manipulation.. Is this correct? If so it makes it impossible to pass images back and forth between Lightroom and CS4 and make non destructive changes to an image. Again, am I right, or am I doing something wrong?
    Many thanks

    Thanks, Jao
    It's a pity
though I see why. Trouble is that, good though Lightroom's develop capabilities are, it often seems a rather 'blunter' tool to work with. I love it for its black and white conversions, and for its gradient dodging and burning, but to work on smaller areas of tone in images needs Photoshop, in my estimation. Because of the above cited interaction between the two, the holy grail of non destructive manipulation is unattainable. Sigh.......

  • PS CS4 eating memory and not responding

I have PS CS4 (11.0.1) and for the past month and a half, using PS has been excruciating.  Whenever I open PS, my memory usage goes through the roof, hanging out consistently in the high 90% range.  The program becomes almost unusable whenever I choose the text tool.  After choosing the text tool, I get the continual spinning hour glass, the black bar at the top of the screen shows up with (not responding) and if I try to click anywhere the screen goes faded and it's a crap shoot whether or not it comes back or I get the "program is not responding" box.  After closing PS, my memory almost instantly drops to it's normal levels of between 30 and 40%.
Like I said, this has only been happening for about a month (maybe less) or so.  Is there anyone out there that can help?
    Thanks, Dave

First of all, I want to say thanks for all the help so far.
OK, I called my brother-in-law and it turns out that he didn't install just a few fonts, he installed a few font packs, totalling about 4,000 fonts .  I've gone through and deleted every one, other than system fonts, and the text tool responds a lot faster, but the memory issue is still plaguing me.  Granted it's not nearly as bad as before, but it's still pretty slow.  I checked the memory allocated to PS, and I've got 2 gigs total and a little less than 1 gig available to PS.  My scratch disks (not really sure what those are) are my D and an external HD.  Is there anything else I can check to speed this program up?

  • CS4 Installation & Memory

    Hi,
I would like to install Photoshop CS4.  While starting to do so, I got an error message stating that the maximum Ram requirement was 2GB, which I do have (my system data tells me my PC's max Ram capacity is 2GB, Installed Memory 512 MB, Memory Slot 1 is also 512 MB).  Can anyone tell me if it is indeed possible to install CS4??
Apologies if this seems dumb, or I'm repeating other peoples' questions.
    Any advice would be appreciated!

Your facts are a bit mixed up CS4 ideally needs 2GB RAM but will run on 1GB I believe.
You seem to have 1GB so it should work – just.

  • Adobe CS4, Lightroom, etc.?

I am making the transition from the PC to the Mac quite well, thanks to the help on this forum.
Recently, a friend of mine, using an iMac experienced a horrific experience with Adobe products, particularly CS4 and Lightroom. His experience was so bad that he is furious at both Adobe and Apple because he doesn't know for sure what caused the problem. These issues all started when he installed Snow Leopard. His machine would stop working, programs wouldn't work, and in general he made it sound as if the PC world had invaded the MAC realm. Since his problems started I have not launched any of my Adobe products because I do not want to experience the same problems.
I am asking this question on this forum because I am not sure where to go, and any direction would be greatly appreciated.
Has anybody else experienced Photoshop or Lightroom problems since upgrading to Snow Leopard? If you have, how have you addressed them?
Again, thank you for your help in the past.

This is a good page I found just today about SL: http://www.macintouch.com/specialreports/snowleopard/slfaq.html
Installing SL can be done in various ways, and people have different experiences with each way. I had to do an erase and install. For me I could migrate nothing. Nothing at al that didn't cause my machine to misbehave and even then it ran poorly, beach balls and the like. It was only the 6.1 upgrade that had my Mac running well again.
In my opinion, SL was rushed out the door a little too quickly.
I'm glad the people who installed it on multiple machines had no problems whatsoever. But they seem to chime in for no purpose other than to gloat I guess. To me it's kind of telling that they don't say how they did it. Was it and erase and install? Did they install it over every other Macs system? Did they migrate anything? In other words, have they really given you much guidance in your issues?
For me I can only say this, you had better have either Time Machine or a current clone of your previous system. Making an OS change is making a big change. One simply can't guarantee that everything will go right, so one must have a back up just in case. If you do, and want to play it the safest way, install SL again but after the language choice, go into the top menu and launch Disk Utility and erase the drive. Continue the install but it might be a good idea to do a custom install and leave out extra languages and printer drivers. If you have one printer, you can always download that one and that one only. Continue the install till it's finished and restarts. In my view, the safest thing to do is not migrate a thing. Just start out with a completely pristine system, attach your back up to your Mac, and start dragging things over. For your major apps I would install them from the discs again. You'll have to put in all your passwords and such again, but almost everything you drag over, except for certain apps should work just fine.
Is this way a hassle, yes. But since this is the only one of 4-5 different ways I tried to install SL for optimum performance, it's all I can recommend.
Remember too, if you have recent backups or a recent clone, you can use your Mac as is. Upgrade as often as you can, 6.2 is coming soon, and just see how things go. By having a back up or clone, nothing you do can't be undone.
    Good luck.

  • Adobe Pixelbender / Photoshop CS4 graphics / memory problems

I have been using my 4 year old MacBook Pro for rendering images (using the GPU) with a special pixelbenderscript and stitching these images together with photoshop CS4.
With mybrand new MacBook Pro, suddenly I get erratic behaviour when rendering the images, the whole screen gets covered with a mix of the image and parts of the desktop/application.
The next problem is the stiching of the images in PS CS4, where I get a "out of RAM" message where my old MacBook Pro did the work just fine (and I have 4GB RAM now, before only 3).
Is this a known issue? Any solution?
    Regards
    Johan

Go to this site and download the 9.9 driver set. The 9.5 driver set had a streaming problem that had to be fixed with a hotfix. I have the 4870 also and the 9.9 drivers are stable and have no issues with PS CS4 on vista 64 bit.
    http://www.amd.com/us/Pages/AMDHomePage.aspx
Sometimes it is better not to change drivers if you don't have issues. But the 9.5 set has issues.
Make sure you un-install the old drivers. When you click on the Icon and start the install it will unpack as normal but you will come upon a screen to install or uninstall. Choose uninstall to remove the old driver package. Reboot. Then click on the icon again, it will unpack and you will get the screen again so choose install. Reboot after install.
If I remember correctly the 9.5 drivers, after install, did not show the reboot screen. You still have to reboot.

  • Photoshop CS4 & Lightroom 2.6 X64 funktionieren nicht mehr

    Hallo,
Photoshop 32 Bit funktioniert normal, ebenso andere 64 Bit Applikationen (z.B. Photomatix Pro 3.2)
Hat irgendjemand eine Idee was die Ursache sein könnte?
In der Woche habe ich eigentlich nichts an meinem PS installiert, außer einem Windows Update.

  • Illustrator cs4 says memory full, images gone, please help

is anyone awake?  It's almost 3 inthe morning and I'm in computer ****.  I might loose hours and hours of work.  anyone help with mac memory?

You haven't been saving frequently as you work? Now you know why that's essential. Already knew, just forgot to do it? I've been there and done that myself, usually in the wee hours of the morning, operating on coffee and two brain cells. For most of us, that's not a good time to be doing important work. Leave the machine as is, get some sleep, and come back fresh. There's no way to recover the lost work if it was never saved, but don't start doing it over again until you're sharp enough to save it as you go.

  • New PC CS4 & Lightroom Issues

Hello. I have just bought a new PC. Windows Vista and CS4 & LR2 were installed on the old C drive. I have installed a new hard drive and reinstalled windows on this new drive - it has now become the default C drive.
The problem is that I cannot launch CS4 from, what is now , the D drive. I get an error saying contact Adobe or restart your PC. Same for LR2. I cannot seem to unistall these prog's as the system can only 'see' the new Hard drive.
My fear is that if I load both software on the new drive my licence will not be accepted. I have contacted adobe via e-mail, but they have not replied.
I don't know what to do.

No, sorry. That will never work. You can't avoid re-installing everything. The shared components (Bridge, PDFL, licensing etc.) for Adobe programs will always require the proper directories on a C: drive to be in place. I at least hope you  have deactivated the stuff before introducing your new drive and switching or support will now have to do it for you.

  • CS4 Camera Raw Does Not Open With Lightroom 3

    Hi everybody,
    I have the following equipment:
    iMac OSX 10.7 Lion
    Photoshop CS4
    Lightroom 3.6
    Camera Raw 5.7
All SW has the latest Patch.
When I open a Canon CR2 out of PS, the Camera Raw plugin shows up and I can make my settings.
When I try to right-click from LR, the window does not open. The file is opened but no CR-plugin.
It used to work on my iMac with SnowLeopard.
    Can anybody help me?
    Thank you for your time.
    Ole

ACR should never visibly open going from LR to PS.  This is by design.
Because your LR and CS/ACR are mismatched versions, LR will have to render to a TIF on the way into PS, so there’s no ACR involved.  If you were using matched versions of LR and PS, either LR2/CS4 or LR3/CS5 (or now LR4/CS6) then ACR is called on the way into PS but without your seeing the user-interface.   The adjustments available in LR3 are “newer” than the adjustments available in CS4/ACR5 so it doesn’t even make sense you’d want to see the sliders in ACR on the way into PS, because they’d be undoing or changing something LR had done unless you mean you want to adjust the intermediate TIF file using the older ACR sliders for some reason.

  • Memory Configuration & Upgrade Recommendations - 2006 Mac Pro

    Hello,
It's been a long time since I have been posting here. Nice to see that everyone is still here. I have a memory configuration and upgrade I am now looking at. I'm also interested in how to use Bootcamp and install 64-bit Windows 7 when I have the EFI32. It appears that many of you build a new Windows 7 install DVD?
    Here is my current configuration:
    A1: 2GB
    A2: 2GB
    B1: 1GB
    B2: 1GB
    A3: 512 MB
    A4: 512 MB
    B3: 512 MB
    B4: 512 MB
I'm interested in comparing the 4GB vs. 2GB modules and what are the best options for maxing out this Mac Pro. I have forensic software that uses Oracle that I want to put on Windows 7 or a 64-bit Windows server. The system requirements say 16-32GB in a 64-bit environment for Oracle.
I also want to use CS4, Lightroom, Aperture, Capture One Pro, and FC HD on Snow Leopard.
I would appreciate input on configuration and memory quantities for what appears to now be an ancient Mac Pro and how to use a 64-bit OS on Bootcamp.
Thank you for your time and input!
    Michael

2006: 4 memory chips is ideal. obviously that only takes you to 16GB max.
    2008: 8 memory chips (don't read about 2008 then!)
I've seen people report their 4GB DIMMs run cooler, too, and heat is always an issue when it comes to FBDIMMs. They use a lot of power (watts) and one of the large sources of heat.
What you have now, 2s and 1s and 512s don't get you to 16GB or above, and as I posted you can get to 20GB replacing 4 x 512s.
I'd try with 4 x 4GB, which seems like you have to buy anyway, and see how heat and performance is. And only then consider adding back 2s and 1s to get to 20GB.
in the end, I'd sell the RAM you have if it makes a difference.

  • Problems viewing RAW photos properly in Photoshop/Lightroom/ACR

Hey folks. New here and looking to find some assistance with a  problem I'm having in Photoshop CS4, Lightroom 2 and Adobe Camera Raw  5.7 when attemtping to view RAW photos straight from my Canon 450D. My  computer is a Mac PowerPC G5 running OS X 10.5.8 with a single 1.8Ghz  CPU and 3.5Gb of RAM. Photoshop CS4 is version 11.0.2. Lightroom is  version 2.7. Adobe Camera Raw is version 5.7.
What I am  having problems with is viewing RAW photos from my camera in all of  these applications. No problems are encountered with any other file type  such as PNG or jpg.
I have attached a screen capture of  what I am seeing when I open a .CR2 RAW image in Camera RAW before  opening in Photoshop. As you can see, the software seems to be having a  difficult time rendering the photo properly. I can view these files on  other computers using the Canon software that came with my camera. I get  this same problem if I view the image in Lightroom.
As  far as I know, I can't upgrade to PS CS5 or LR 3 because I am still  running on the PPC architecture, so I need to find how to fix this  without having to buy a Mac Pro and the newest software.
Any ideas on how to troubleshoot? If the screenshot is too small, I can provide the full-res version.

I'm well-versed in forum ettiquette, thank you. I do, however, see no problem why posting about this problem once in each forum covering the software involved in my problem would be an issue. If I posted about the problem in only one forum, let's say in the Lightroom forum, and the problem was experience by another person who did not use Lightroom and would not be browsing the Lightroom forum for help, how would they have come across this post? Unless they also looked in the Photoshop forum, they might not have seen this post. So where's the harm in having it viewed by a greater number of individuals?
With that aside, my problem is now resolved. After looking around a bit more on the forums here last night, I came across a thread started by a fellow who was experiencing the same issue as I, except he had newer versions of the software. Someone had replied to his post suggesting that it could have been faulty RAM modules and that they once experienced similar issues which were resovled by replacing the RAM. This was good news to me, since I had just purchased additional RAM for my Mac last week. It arrived today and I installed it and booted the Mac up. I purged any cache files used by these three software titles and then reattempted opening a RAW image in Photoshop. I took my latest RAW images from my camera, exported them to a USB thumb drive, and then from there exported them to my Mac. I tried to open on of the images in Photoshop and it opened successfully with ACR along with a complete and pristine preview of the image. Open the other RAW images in Lightroom, no problems.
