[CS4]: Links Palette

Hi all,
I'm curious to know how we can implement a palette like "Links" in a plugin in CS4. The links palette contains collapsing/resizable part.
Thank you,
Mor

You're right. I guess I missed those. I'll look into whether this is an appropriate place for such discussions -- it strikes me as incongruous that SDK issues can be publicly discussed about a product that is under NDA for those regular users who are in the testing program.

  • Illustrator CS4 Link palette not listing embedded filenames

According to online Help, the Links palette should list names and paths of both embedded and linked files. However, I'm not seeing any embedded filenames or paths:
WinXP Intel Core Duo 3 GHz 3 GB RAM.
I saw a thread about this for a CS3 user, but didn't see any resolution to the problem.

I do not see this as a problem at all. If you embed a psd or tif (formats which support layers) and choose the "convert layers to objects" option and if your image can't be represented as one single embedded image, then it will break into two or more parts in the Links panel. Even if you choose the "flatten layers to a single image" option it might break your image into two or more parts. Depends entirely on your original image. If your image can be represented as one single embedded image, you will not encounter this behavior. You do not see this in your jpg images because jpgs do not support layers, afaik - it is a flat file format.
Nothing has changed in Illustrator CS5 in this aspect. So I don't see how upgrading to CS5 will make a difference. But if you really want to experience the wonderful feature set of CS5 like Beautiful Strokes, Bristle Brush, Perspective Grid, Drawing enhancements, Clean sharp graphics for Web, and a host of other splendid features, then you must surely upgrade.

  • Links Palette Showing for Page Number

I can't find anything about this on these forums or in a Google search, so I'm not sure what's happening.
We publish a dozen 300-page catalogs a year with several thousand images. Each catalog is comprised of sections. Once in a while (probably more often than not), instead of the page number on which it appears, one or more of the linked images shows < > in the page number column of the links palette. If we click on it (to show the image), nothing happens.
Has anyone encountered this before? We're using CS4 for Windows.
    Thanks in advance,
    Lloyd

    Steve,
I will as soon as we see one again, which shouldn't be long. We exported the section as XML from the "structure" pane then imported it as XML and those bad links were gone, which is kind of a band-aid for now. I'd like to know what's causing it, though.
I'll attach a screen capture as soon as I can. Thanks.

  • Warning RGB symbol in the links palette.

What about a small warning symbol in the links palette to say if RGB so you can see at a glance and edit original/convert to CMYK with one click?
It would improve workflow somewhat. Yes, I know, arguably we should be sorting our PSDs first but in the real working world...! Plus RGB to CMYK is possibly the most often performed task when working on a document with images
    Thanks for reading this.

    Hi Peter
Not sure where I'm supposed to see this info in the links palette? I have tried to use the drop down menu and looked in the prefs. Where do you change this settting? I'm using CS3 so maybe this is a new feature in CS4?
Also, I take your point about Preflight, but what I meant was a quick, one-click affair where maybe InDesign linked into a Photoshop action and changed all the colour modes. Or, potentially another simple script via the links palette. In a similar way to how "edit original" works by opening up the file or similarly, "object layer options" turning on or off.
This could also serve some use as a "multi-program action set" where other simple scripts could be accessed this way to deal with batch items. i.e. image size, minor colour correction etc etc...
Hopefully I'm making more sense. Only the other day (after rushing through placing a load of RGB jpeg files - bad practice I know) I had to then find which ones were still RGB from the list/preflight and deal with each one individually. If I had this little warning symbol you say is there already, things would be somewhat easier and if we had the one-click/action idea, things would be vastly easier. If I'm still missing something, then I apologise.
    Thanks again

  • Links not showing in Links palette; InDesign CS3

    Specs:
    Version CS3
    OS: XP Professional
    Memory: 2gb
After running several searches I found an almost identical question in this forum, but an answer was not posted, plus they had an older version.
The link text (missing or not) is not showing up in the Links Palette. We have reset Preferences, by going to the actual location on the drive and removing them, forcing ID to recreate them on start up, but no luck. We always "Place" and never "Copy and Paste".
If we "Package", we can see a list of the Links as normal, it's just in the Links Palette where we're having problems.
    Thanks for any help.

I'm not sure that's what Thomas is asking. It sounds to me more like he has an empty links palette (where he ought to be seeing links to images) than that all he has placed are text and spreadsheets, and his preference is to embed those.
Since prefs replacement isn't helping, and if I'm correct in my interpretation, I think the next step might be checking the video driver by turning off hardware video acceleration temporarily.

  • Is it possible for Applescript to know what link is selected in the Indesign Links Palette?

    Hi there,
I've written some ApplesScripts for Indesign that act on all links, missing links and/or selected links, but what if I wanted to perform an action on a link that is only selected in the links palette?
Is it possible for AppleScript to know which link is selected in the Indesign links palette?

  • Name Case issue in Link Palette

I have imported couple of Links in InDesign CS6. All links are imported well. The issue is happened in case sensitive of links as described below.
    1. I have imported the links with the naming convention as shown below.
         001_FlowerX1.jpg
         002_FlowerX2.jpg
         003_FlowerX3.jpg
         004_FlowerX4.jpg
         005_FlowerX5.jpg
    2. I have renamed the links after imported into InDesign as shown below.
         001_flowerx1.jpg
         002_flowerx2.jpg
         003_flowerx3.jpg
         004_flowerx4.jpg
         005_flowerx5.jpg
Can you see the difference of the naming convention between points 1 & 2? There is a case sensitive difference.
InDesign Link palette does not show modified/missing links. The image status looks "OK" in the Link palette after change the original name in point 2.
I just wonder how InDesign does not show modified/missing links in the Links palette after changing the name. Attached screenshot of case sensitive difference in the links naming convention for your reference.
Anyone help on this issue to overcome and provide a solid solution of the same.

Is your Mac set up to use case-sensitive file naming? I'm not a Mac person, but my recollection is you have to go to some pains to format the drive for case-sensitivity.
If, in fact, you simply change the case without moving the files and you are not formatted for case-sensitivity I would expect ID to continue to recognize the files at the old locations and to update automatically the next time you open the document. If you change the names in Finder whiel the document is open I would expect to see a file modifcation warning, but not a missing file. I don't know why ID isn't updating the spelling, though. Perhaps it's because it doesn't matter.

  • Placed Files and Copied Text not Appearing in Links Palette

I am working on an annual report.
The report is a booklet. I'm using master text boxes. The report is basically one, long flowing stream of text. Within this there are many articles, divided by headings.
I'm receiving articles for this annual report from many different sources, text within emails, Word documents, etc.
I have the "Create Links When Placing Text and Spreadsheet Files" checked.
    I'm having this issue:
Nothing is appearing in my Links palette.
When I go to File>Place, and place a Word document in as an article within my report, it doesn't appear in the link palette. When I copy text in from a Word document, it doesn't appear in the link palette.
However, when I place the Word document in the annual report within it's own text box, THEN it appears in the links palette.
But I don't want each Word document within it's own text box, I want it to be a part of the other text flow within the report.
Is there something I'm doing wrong?
Can't InDesign retain the link to the document even if the text is placed within a larger body of text flow?

No. It's not possible to maintain a link to text that's not in its own text frame.
What would happen if you were to edit the text in the frame, and part of the text affected was linked and part was not. What would you expect to happen? Such a workflow isn't possible as far as I know.

  • Images disappear out of Links palette

I have an InDesign document, one of several that were created from scratch. I just discovered that in this document over half the images are now not listed in the Links palette. I placed the images (tifs) originally using Place.
Clicking on images, which appear normally on the page, using either selection tool does not make the name appear in the palette.
If I use the Package command, it does not copy the missing images. The Preflight command does indicate that there are "embedded" images (but of course doesn't give me the names so I can't easily go back and find/relink them!). There ARE 11 images in the document (Tifs and a few .psd images) that are appearing as normal in the palette.
So far none of the other similar documents I've worked on over the last month or so have this problem. I tried resetting the prefs and removing/recreating the Cache files. (house/Library/Cashes/AdobeInDesign.
Any ideas 1) how to fix; or 2) what happened, so I can avoid having it happen again?
How come this stuff always happens when you're on a big deadline?

    >Only if your network is unstable. For most groups, it's not only
acceptable but in fact is the only way to work especially if there's an
    InCopy element to the workflow.
This will always come back to bite you eventually. Maybe not today and maybe not even this year, but eventually.
    http://blogs.adobe.com/jnack/2008/06/filesaving_issu.html
Why not set up a good system to deal with file check-outs instead? We link directly to all of the graphics across the network, but the actual InDesign files that are going to be edited and saved are all edited locally after check-out.
Just my $.02 on the matter...
EDIT: Oops, I see you tried the INX export already! Were these files perhaps pasted directly into InDesign? If so, you can copy them out and save them as graphics and relink to the graphics, but otherwise they are just a part of the file.

  • Why won't my links palette display any links?

Is this a common bug? The links palette will not display any links for ANY documents. They do not show as missing or broken, there is just an empty palette window.

Try restoring your InDesign preferences. Here's how:
Trash, Replace, Reset, or Restore the application Preferences

  • Help!! My linked text file disappears from the links palette

I've set my preferences so that InDesign creates a link when placing text and spreadsheet files, and when I first place the file it appears in the Links palette just fine.
However, as soon as I make a change in the original text file, it disappears from the Links palette!
Any ideas what I'm doing wrong? I'm using CS2.
    Thanks very much!

Just figured it out - Didn't notice that I wasn't setting the "Photo Credit" paragraph style. Problem solved!

  • Photoshop CS4 layers palette too wide problem!

    http://img232.imageshack.us/img232/6828/swatchesld2.jpg
The Photoshop CS4 layers palette is too wide and distorts the layout of the default color swatches palette when docked on the same column. And I don't want to have to put the color swatches palette anywhere else but the same column. Can the layers palette be fixed so that it can be as narrow as the other palettes, so it won't cause a conflict with the swatches layout?

As for the rescalability of panels I think this is more of a Windows issue, but even on mac these are nowhere near as well designed as they were.
Panel and UI design issues are now unfortunately more complex than just to do with Photoshop. The whole Creative Suite is now unified to some extent in the way it handles panels. Part of these problems stem from the fact that Indesign and Illustrator's concerns are quite different to those of Photoshop. Partly because the designers of these two applications have introduced a great swaithe of additional panels, which now need to be accomodated. Hence the panel buttons, and poorly docking panels.
The design of The Creative Suite interface now seems much more influenced by Flash Web design, and Windows OS. Unfortunately with flashing buttons, icons, and distracting transparency whenever you move anything, Photoshop appears on the surface much more complex than it needs to. This surface complexity will lead to further misguided accusations of "bloat".
Photoshop CS and CS2 in my humble opinion, had much more "solid" and well designed panel (or palette) interfaces. Although here and there there have been one or two useful additions to the overall UI, including more readily accessible workspaces, tiling, and obvious clickable icons for people who can't deal with keyboard shortcuts.

  • Adobe Illustrator Links Palette, no image preview

Since updating to the latest version of Adobe Illustrator CC (2014.1.0 release, Illustrator 18.1.0) I don't get an image preview of selected linked images in my document. All of the information about the image shows up, but no image preview. I've checked the "links palette options" to make sure i have image preview selected, but still nothing. Anyone have any thoughts?

    Hi Np,
Thank you for the picture. The Illustrator team is looking investigating this issue.
For the time being you may try to increase the size of the height of the Links panel so that it can display the linked/embedded files in the document/file.

  • New CS4 links panel is very slow

I have 3200 links and using new CS4 links-panel is insanely slow. If I delete or update an image when links panel is open, I get the beachball for 10-15 seconds.
The beachball also rolls for many seconds when simply opening the links panel. Seriously slowing the workflow.
Tried to click off all info and thumbnails, no change.
This used to be a breeze in CS3.
Anyone else experience the same? I use MacBook Pro 2.4 Intel with 4 gigs ram.

Do you have any suggestions of what might be the problem?
I tried same document on CS3 and CS4, and CS4 has very slow links panel.
I have no trouble when there are just a few links, but I have 3200 links to maybe 15 different multipage PDF's. CS3 handled this perfectly.

  • Links palette

Sometimes I place tif or eps files and then delete them and replace with another one.
They are staying listed in the links palette and everytime I open up the Illustrator
file it asks me to "repair" "Replace" "Ignore" or "Cancel."
How do I remove links in the links palette that are not in use.
    Thanks
    HJMann42

You may select Ignore button and then select the specified link in document and press delete button. I hope you'll be able to get rid of non-usable links.
