CS4 Mac - Compare original with manipulated RAW file

Having worked on a file I'd like to show a comparison of the original RAW file to the one I've worked on but when I save it, I can't see how to show what it was like beforehand (like you can in Aperture).
Any suggestions please?
Thanks.

Robert,
An original, un-demosaiced (unconverted) raw file is a very, very dark file devoid of any color, at least not any color a human being can interpret as color).
Therefore, I assume you want to compare two renditions of the raw image: a default ACR conversion and an ACR conversion to which you have applied further adjustments.
If that is the case, this post may shed some light on the situation:
Dennis S, "Preview on/off of all (changed) settings" #2, 25 Jan 2009 5:34 am
Just be aware that the toggle will take you from your latest adjustments to whatever adjustments the image had when you last opened it, which may not be the default ACR conversion if you had applied adjustments earlier.

Assuming you mean 5D Mark III, Photoshop CS4 cannot directly open raw files from your camera.
Generally speaking, Adobe stopped updating older versions to be able to read raw files from newer cameras when they released a new major version of Photoshop. Photoshop CS4 is no longer receiving Camera Raw updates.
You can double check this yourself:
First you need to determine whether Adobe has released support for your new camera in your version of Photoshop. To do that, look at these two pages. You'll want to find out the earliest version of Camera Raw that can support your camera, then what version of Photoshop can run that version of Camera Raw.
Camera Raw plug-in | Supported cameras
    Camera Raw-compatible Adobe applications
If you find your camera is supported by your version of Photoshop, you need to download the latest update for Camera Raw. There's more information on how to do that here:
    Keeping Photoshop Up-To-Date
If your version of Photoshop cannot support your camera, you can download and install the latest version of the free Adobe DNG Converter, which can take your raw files as input and put out DNG format files, which your version of Photoshop can open.
Photoshop Help | Digital Negative (DNG)
The DNG converter DOES work, but if you want maximal quality from your raw files (not to mention the convenience and ease of use of directly opening your raw files) you'll want the latest version of Photoshop. Adobe has made substantial improvements in raw conversion quality in recent years.

I need to work with the RAW files on a SONY RX100III camera. I use Photoshop CS5 and a Mac operating system OSX 10.6. Is there an Camera RAW upgrade or an alternative program that works here?

You don't. Since you have an Intel Mac, buy a Mac OS X 10.6 DVD from the online Apple Store.

I just purchased the new Canon SX60 camera. Despite downloading and installing the latest version of Adobe DNG converter, I receive an error message saying that Photoshop CS4 can't open up/convert raw files (.CR2). This is the same file format as used by the SX50, with which I never had any problem. Does anyone have a suggestion on how to fix this problem? Thanks.

Camera Raw plug-in | Supported cameras  I do not see that SX60 as supported. Just how new is the SX60 when was it announces. Its support is not even listed in ACR 8.7 RC

  • Problem with recognition raw files from nikon d600

hello everyone, i hope someone can answer my question.
using cs5 with camera raw . camera raw is not able to open my nef files from my new nikon d600 . what can i do to update the plugin??
from the menu help updates in cs5 it tells me that all soft.  is updated but it is still not working

You need to upgrade to PS CS6 in order to work with D600 raw files. Else, you can convert your raw files to DNG using DNG Converter.

  • CS4 won't read Canon T1i raw files

CS4 won't read Canon T1i raw files. Is this a known problem? Is there an update or plugin that I need to download? If so, where can I find it? Thanks for your help.

T1i support was added in Camera Raw 5.4. It sounds like your Camera Raw may be out of date.
From within Photoshop, choose "Updates…" from the Help menu. It'll do its thing and eventually Adobe Updater should tell you updates are available. Run through that install process and you should be set to go.
Note that you will have to quit Photoshop during the installation process, so make sure all your work is saved.

  • Hi, I need some help. Since I have changed to windows 7 I cannot open raw files with my canon mk 5D. The files will not open in cs4. Can somebody advise me what to do. I have done updates on CS4 and still cannot open the raw files

Can anybody advise me what to do as I am having problems opening raw files on CS4 since I have changed to windows 7. I am using a canon mk 5D.

Actually, you're not.  That's not an accurate description of any of the Canon 5D models.
There are EOS 5D, EOS 5D Mark II, and EOS 5D Mark III models.  Which do you have, specifically?  Details will matter for this.
If you have a 5D Mark III (three) it's too new and you will not be able to directly open files with Photoshop CS4.  You'll either need a newer version of Photoshop or to use the free DNG converter.

  • Error with Canon Raw file in CS4

I have recently purchased a Canon 1D MK IV I have CS4 running on my Windows 7 Laptop and my Vista 64 bit PC and I get an error when I try to open a Raw file to process.  Excuse me if this problem has been beat up before, I'm new to Forum and could not find the problem in a search.  The error message says, "Cannot complete your request because its not the right kind of Document"  Any help you can give is appreciated.

You probably need to update the camera raw plugin to 5.7:

or in photoshop go to Help>Updates.

  • Problem related to PS CS6 ext. on Mac.  Nikon DSLR D610 raw file can not be opened

Problem related to PS CS6 ext. on Mac. Installation is OK but I can't open picture from my Nikon D610 (Raw NEF format). I get a message "can not open this format ...". Checking Help menu to see if I miss an update the message I get is that I'm up-to-date but at the end Nikon D610 (format supported of course) files can not be opened . JPEG are OK but I work with raw files. Thanks

What OS are you running: 10.x.x?
What version of the Camera Raw plug-in do you have?  Do (About) Plug-ins / Camera Raw to find out.
You need at least ACR 8.3 to open D610 files.  If the Help / Updates process does not work, then there is a manual install process you can do.  The page with the download is for when people accidentally updated to ACR 8.4 and need to roll back to ACR 8.3 due to their OS being incompatible, but the installer on that page works even if you haven’t erroneously updated to ACR 8.4:

  • Photoshop Elements 11 Editor running on Mac Yosemite will not process Raw files

Upgraded MAC from OS X 10.6.8 to Yosemite 10.10.2  Also updated iPhoto to v9.6 in order to work with Yosemite (and iPhoto's digital camera raw to 6.03).  Raw files in iphoto are no longer able to be edited in PSE 11 Raw converter.  Raw files from iPhoto using the "edit in external editor" feature will not open to PSE 11 Editor.  Can open and edit JPEGS from iPhoto to PSE 11 Editor.  I have verified iPhoto preferences.  What are my options?  Will upgrading to PSE 13 solve problem?

All those camera raw files should open in pse 11, provided you have camera raw 7.4
(camera raw 7.4 is the newest camera raw plugin for photoshop elements 11)
Camera Raw plug-in | Supported cameras
If in the pse 11 editor you go to Adobe Photoshop Elements Editor>About Plug-In and click on words Camera Raw, which version does it say?
If you don't have Version 7.4, then go to Help>Updates in the pse 11 editor to get camera raw 7.4
Another thing to check is the iPhoto>Preferences>Advanced and ensure Use Raw when using external editor is checked.

  • Can't create web photo gallery with modified RAW files

I can use CS-2 to create a web photo gallery using unmodified RAW files, this seems to work fine.
However, after I tweak the exposure of a RAW file and a .xmp file has been created, if I try to create a web photo gallery, the program goes through the motions but no thumbnails or (bigger) jpg files are created. The resulting web photo gallery pages are just filled with broken link icons.
    What's up?
    Windows 2000
    Photoshop CS-2
    Cannon RAW files (.CR2 extensions)
    Thanks,
    Mark

I believe it may be to do with the sidecar files. My girlfriend has similar issues on Windows XP.
I have tried to recreate the problem here (on Mac OSX) but it all works fine for me, so i can't fully test it, but here is what i believe may be happening....
The sidecar file has the same name as the actual raw file (except the extension of course), so when the web gallery script is processing it, it does the raw file, then overwrites by trying to process the xmp file as an image, but of course it can't and then you end up with no image file in your thumbnail, or image directories in the web gallery for that image.
    Two options you can try...
    1) go into bridge and select the images to process in there (xmp files shouldn't show up there) and then use the Tools/Photoshop menu to access the WGB and choose 'Selected Bridge Images' as the source. (this has been tested successfully on win xp)
    2) in the camera raw plugin, go into preferences and change the 'sidecar xmp' option to 'camera raw database'. You will then probably need to delete any sidecar files for the folder you wish to process and reapply your raw adjustments. If the problem is what i suspect (as above) this should also work, though i haven't been able to test.
Obviously you don't need to worry about the 'down rezzing' mentioned above as the web gallery builder should already be doing this for you...unless you changed it.

  • Bridge CS6 open file bug with Hasselblad RAW file

There is a bug in Bridge CS6 (or RAW editor?) with (some) Hasselblad RAW files. I have a set of FFF files that I can use and open without problems in Bridge CS6 (5.0.0.399 x64). But one file of them does not show a preview icon and when I try to open it in PS6 or RAW editor, I get an errormessage "unexpected end of file...". When I open the same file in Hasselblad "Phocus" software there is no problem. I can see the preview thumb and I can play around with the file and even export to TIF or DNG without any trouble. I can even open the exported DNG in PS or Bridge/RAW editor then.
Well, you might say I should not care for a single file but it leaves a bad taste, when the Hasselblad software can handle the file without problems...
If some developer want to take a look at this I could provide original files.

    Curt Y wrote:
Also, be sure to use a card reader for file transfer as a camera transfer can introduce errors.
I work with a Hasselblad medium format camera. I do not have a CF card in use. And I can tell that this worked absolutely flawless for many years. I NEVER had corrupted files caused by transfer. Many photographers using pro medium format cameras work the same way (Phase One, Leaf, etc.). They do not use CF cards but firewire cable. the problem arised when I started using the CS6 Bridge software. And it turned out that I get more and more corrupted files which appeared to be fine before. So from one shooting i.e. 1 file of 100 was corrupted first. Since I started using Bridge and changed RAW settings and worked with the same files after some days I have 5 corrupted files of 100 now. And NO it is not my system. It works fine with other camera RAWs where I have absolutely no problems. It is only the Hasselblad files. Though I still can open the Hasselblad RAW files with the Hasselblad software. The problems are only with the Bridge (respectively the raw editor) in combination with the Hasselblad files.
To me it looks like CS is corrupting the files since they worked fine at first - even in CS and after some days playing around in CS the appear to be corrupted. Funny that I can open the same files without problems using a different software - isn't it? ;-)
thanks for the link I will try it.... :-)

  • Aperture on 2 Machines with Large Raw Files

So I bet this has been covered but I still cant find an answer.
I have the need to be able to edit my library on multiples machines (my macbook and iMac). I need to be able to edit some shoot when I travel and do final edits when I get back to the studio.
I am currently housing all my libraries (one for each year) on a portable lache rugged HD (using firewire).
When I want to edit, I just access plug my HD into either machine and open the library. I keep all my original RAW files on the portable drive.
My problem is that I shoot with a 21mp Canon 5d mk ii and the RAW files are huge, so running off the portable drive is really slow.
Does anyone have a better solution? or a way to make things faster?

I don't think there's an obvious way to speed things up without changing your workflow.
FW 800 is the fastest external connection available to an iMac (if the MB has an Expresscard slot you could use eSATA, which is quicker, but that doesn't help with the iMac.
The workflow change would be to maintain the Aperture Library on the internal HD, and use the portable drive to keep them in sync.

  • Using CS3 with Nikon Raw Files from D700 and Mountain Lion

I changed my hard disc as there was a problem. I was quite happily using mountain lion to read raw files in CS3 before re-installing and now I cannot read the raw NEFF files in Photoshop CS3. Help please.

Sounds as if that's a Photoshop problem - I have no problems with Photoshop CS6 (I upgraded from CS3 when I bought my new Mac). You might want to head over to the Adobe Photoshop discussion boards and post your problem there - http://forums.adobe.com/community/photoshop - I'm not totally sure that all CS3 apps are compatible with Mountain Lion. Roaring Apps says that Photoshop CS3 is compatible with both Lion and ML.
Have you tried using iPhoto to import the RAW NEFF files? Try that as a backup method - but get in touch with the Adobe Forum first.
    Good luck,
    Clinton
