CS4 master pages don't transfer

I created a book using a 6x9 format, but after I got the entire 39 chapters formatted, I realized I needed to switch to 5x8 format.  It should be easy -- just move the new masters I created in Chapter 1 to the other chapters.  Only it doesn't work.
I did what the instructions said:  opened both chapters 1 and 2 and in the Page flyout menu, selected "move pages".  I selected Chapter 2 as my destination.  But nothing happened.  The masters in Chapter 2 are still 6x9.
I tried synchronizing the entire book using Chapter 1 as the Style Source, but that doesn't work, either.  None of the masters changed.  Yes, I selected Master Pages in the Synchronization menu.
I also tried to import master pages using the Pages flyout menu.  That didn't work, either.
I even tried deleting the 6x9 master pages.  Well, that was a disaster!  InDesign crashed.
Having to reformat all the masters for all 39 chapters is ridiculous, but I can't see any other way to do it.
HELP!!

No, Peter, I never solved it.  But thank you for asking!
I finally started a whole new book, with the smaller master pages.  I saved a few blank pages for each chapter file, then I copied and pasted the text of each chapter onto the new pages.  Fortunately I was able to transfer paragraph and character styles to the new document, and the formatting of the copied text transferred also.
But it was still a lot of work.
I don't even want to think about trying to design a document with different size pages!

  • Master Pages don't transfer when I change page size in a book

I had exactly the same problem in CS4, which is why I switched to CS5.5 -- but apparently nothing has changed.
I have a book of about 30 chapters.  It was originally set up in 6x9 format, but after it was all formatted, my client decided he wanted the pages 5x8.
It should be easy, right?  Just change the layout for the master pages of the Style Source document, fix the text sizing, etc.  Then in each ensuing chapter, just download the new masters from the style source document.  When I get a warning asking me if the master pages in the target document should be overwritten, I say yes and it does its thing.
Only it doesn't work.  Oh, the text in the masters is all over the place, which is to be expected -- but the master pages and the book pages are still 6x9, not 5x8.
I tried synchronizing the book, being careful that Master Pages is checked in the options.  I got a warning that some of the text would need to be fixed.  No problem.  Except that the pages in all the documents except the Style Source are still 6x9!!
I have a feeling I've wasted my money on the upgrade.  A lot of bells and whistles have been added, but the CS4 problems aren't solved.
Please, can somebody help?  I do this for a living, and I'm wasting waaaaaay too much time trying to clean up messes like these.

  • Formatted master pages don't auto update in multipage indd doc

Formatted master pages don't auto update in multipage indd doc. When a page is added/removed, folios and rules remain in right page orientation even if they've just become left hand pages, and vice versa. Forced to keep taking the additional steps of applying master to pages which is incredibly annoying/did not use to happen.

  • Custom master pages don't appear in all site collections within same App

I created an additional site collection within an existing application which has a preexisting site collection.
The preexisting site collection uses a custom master page:
    .../_Layouts/ChangeSiteMasterPage.aspx
    that doesn't appear in
    .../newsite/_Layouts/ChangeSiteMasterPage.aspx
Anything I need to do in

    Hey,
I don't get the problem completely. I undestand that your custom masterpage, which you created once for an existing site collection, does not appear in a newly created site collection. So what where your deployment steps for the custom masterpage?
Generally you would create the masterpage via Visual Studio and deploy it within a feature to the catalogs library, either in web-scope or in site-scope. A feature event receiver applys the masterpage to the current website (in web-scope) or to all webs
in the site collection (in site-scope) on feature activating. But in both scopes you need to active the feature in every site collection (or website).
So please tell us how you deployed the masterpage.

  • Master pages don't update site wide

I made a change to my "a" master. Dragging the footer further down. the only way I can get it to update the other pages is to apply, let's say the "b" master to a page then change it back to the "a" master. that is the only way it reflects the change i made. Has anyone else had this problem?

The test site I was working on was done with the very first release with many updates done. I just created a new site and everything seems to work just fine. On a side note, you hear about all the things muse can't do. All are very true, I've built a couple of sites with DW and have spent countless hours in chat rooms and forums trying to figure out things like styling wigets, absoulte DIV's, z-index for menus and on and on. Then when I go back a couple of months later to try and add some pages, I can't remember what the heck I did when I first created the site. Sound familiar?
I'm very comfortable in the InDesign enviroment which helps when using muse. The trade off for that work flow for me is worth the things that aren't yet in muse. It's nice for me to get into muse and see my vision come to life without the brain damage.

  • CS4 auto page insert: master page frame or not

In CS4 the preferences for auto page insert allow to turn off 'limit to master pages'.
However, don't see much difference wether it is on or off. The Help file states that if you do NOT use master text frames, a new textframe should be inserted, one column between the margins.
Can not get this to work when limit to master pages is off. What am I misreading...?
(It is funny sometimes: I have 'delete empty pages' checked (it is on). Now make a document 3 pages long. OK, now draw a empty text frame on page one. Do the same on page 2.
Now connect both text frames: page 2 disappears. This is to be expected but be aware of this.
Now insert text in the textframe on page one that does not fit totally in this textframe: overset symbol appears.
Now where is page 2 that was 'auto deleted' and had the threaded text frame?
Nope, it does NOT appear again!
I admit I still have to get to grip with this, so what DOES the switch 'limit to master pages' on/off have for effect...)

Yes, I know. But maybe my point came over the wrong way. If you have auto page delete on, you have three pages and a textframe that spans page 1 and 2, but not yet text in it, and you connect the empty text frames, page 2 will disappear. Now fill page one with overset, page 2 won't do anything because it needs two pages.
Disable auto page delete and it will work.
Just wondering why it was designed this way, that's all ;-)

  • Help! CS4 overridden master page text keeps coming back...

I work in historic preservation at an architecture firm and I've created a template in indesign, using CS4, for reports that we have to write. There are a lot of master pages set up for different text layouts, plus there are about 10 different picture layout pages. On each page, where there will be text for the report I inserted filler text so that people use the right paragraph styles so that the table of contents will work correctly and to make sure everything is consistent. The document started out as single pages but then I switched it to facing because that's what was asked for. When I switched it, for some reason one of the pages in the middle of the document is set up as only a single page. I tried to move the pages around, but it won't fix the problem. So i tried to add a page after it, and that worked. However, it caused a new problem. I had already gone through and overriden the filler text that came through the master page and put the report in, but when i added the new page, it brought back all of the filler text as a new master underneath the report text. So I have to go through and override all of the filler text again and delete it. It did this to me one other time, and if people are using this template in the future, I don't want it to mess up for someone that isn't that comfortable with indesign in the first place. So I guess my question is if anyone knows why it keeps bringing back the overridden master text and also if there is an easier way to make that single page in the middle of a facing document into a facing page. Thanks for any input.

It brings back the master items because you are shifting from left to right pages, or vice versa, and ID must re-assert the master items when you do that. This is a known behavior (and one reason for not using placeholders that get overridden). If this is a template, must those items actually be on the master page, or can they be in the correct positions on the document pages?
Harbs is working on a plugin that will keep this from happening, but it isn't quite ready. He might be willing to let you test it though. He's at intools.com.

  • Pages don't reflect changes in their master page

I'm using InDesign CS5.5 (v. 7.5.3) with Mac OSX 10.8.4. I found one old question about this problem in another forum (with no submitted answer):
Assume you have a simple document with one master which simply features a text frame. Well, now if you add some inset spacing to the text frame on the master, this is immediately reflected on the pages to which the master had been applied. However, if you edit the master again and set the inset spacing back to zero, the text frames on the pages to which the master had already been applied keep the inset spacing. If one adds new pages, the text frames have no inset spacing, as I would expect. Can someone tell me why InDesign behaves this way... i.e., why are the changes to the master not reflected on the assigned pages when I set the inset spacing back to zero.
This question was asked re CS 2.0. The problem seems to remain in CS 5.5.

I made the changes to the frame inset in the master pages. This is a normal setting for frames, and not complex--and in any case, the point was that I had mistakenly set an inset value, but wanted to reset it to zero, so really nothing to create as an object style. So I reset the value to zero in the master pages. No update. I tried reapplying the changed master page to the doc pages. No update.
You note: "And if you reset the text frame in the Master it won't reflect in the pages."
Is this a known feature/bug? Why shouldn't inset values be part of master text frames and thus updated with them? It doesn't make a lot of sense to me.
Thanks for the suggestion about object styles, though. I don't think it applies here, but I can see the usefulness elsewhere, and I've never really looked at them.

  • Hyperlinks on master pages not working after distilling (InDesign CS4)

    Hello,
We have started using weblinks in the PDF versions of my print magazine.
As PDFs exported in InDesign are bloated, we use this workflow for creating the PDF issues:
Export print-ready PDFs of layouts in InDesign CS4 (Mac)
Combine PDFs into a single file in Acrobat 9.5.1
Crop pages and export combined PDF as PostScript file
Distill PostScript file in Distiller 9.5.1 using default "Smallest File Size" (with Page Thumbnails) setting
We hyperlink all web addresses in the body copy.
We also hyperlink the magazine's website address on the primary master page (A). All of the other master pages in the magazine are based on A-Master.
We create hyperlinks by selecting the link, using the New Hyperlink command in the Hyperlink panel, and uncheck the Shared Hyperlink option.
When we export the layouts using InDesign – either using our printer's settings or InDesign's Smallest File Size setting – the links contained on the master page work.
But these links disappear when our PostScript file is distilled into a PDF.
I know there is a bug in CS5.5 that can cause this problem. But is there any workaround or solution for this in CS4?
    Thanks.

I managed to solve this problem by trashing the CompositeFont folder in InDesign's preferences and restarting InDesign.
Why that should be causing the problems, I have no clue.
Thanks for all the input and help.
I'm having this exact same problem and would like to try your solution, but I can't find the "CompositeFont" folder
I fround the Windows locations info below at http://helpx.adobe.com/indesign/kb/indesign-preferences-support-file-locations.html
But I still didn't see any Composit Fonts folder. Do you have any suggestions on where I can look for this folder?
    Application "roaming data folder:"
    Win 7: C:\Users\[User Name]\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\InDesign\Version [#]\en_US
Preference files saved into this location include the following:
Color Settings: Record of the current application Color Settings, used to sync with other Adobe CMS enabled apps
    Composite Fonts folder
    Find-Change Queries folder: Contains user-defined find/change queries
InDesign Defaults: Record of application defaults, as defined by user modifications

Scripts folder: Location for user scripts to load into the Scripts panel
Workspaces folder: Contains user-defined workspaces, as well as a copy of the Current Workspace

  • Master Page assigments don't stick with pages (FM 8)

I inherited a book done in FM 8 that looks correctly structured and formatted. This book has about 25 chapters, and I need to add new chapters wtihin the existing sequence.
On the Reference Page, the ChapterTitle tag is associated with the "First" master page. I can't find a way to create a new section starting with the ChapterTitle tag, which doesn't throw off all the other master-page assignments.
It's tedious going through the whole manual to reassign all the chapter opening pages, and then finding and reassigning all the pages that are not chapter opening pages, which have been bumped to the "First" master page. I think the "First" assignment should move with the ChapterTitle tag, and it should also move with a page that it has already been assigned to. Is there a way to make the assignments stick to the pages that already have them?

  • Dynamic Master Page. Hide second master page if items don't overflow on it.

    Hi all,
I have a custom PO form which requires an extra header on the first page but not on the subsequent pages. I created a master page on which the items can overflow.
The issue is that the second master page shows irregardless of whether the items overflow or not.
Is there a way to hide that second master page?
    Thanks,
    Paul

    @ Pradeep Goli:
The items are grouped by an attribute and each have subtotals, so it is rather difficult to predict when page will overflow.
    @Otto Gold :
I do have an awkward structure as I couldn't get my deep tables to show as I wanted so I converted the top header of the items into a header.
Here is how it looks like at the moment.
    -(Master_Pages)
    --PAGE1
    ---Page_Header_1
    ---Page_Header_2
    ---Page_Header_3
    ---Body
I need to hide the second header on followup pages.
    I tried several things:
    - dynamically re-size content area for followup pages (using only PAGE1). Not possible
    - create a second page, PAGE2 with my desired headers (Page_Header_1, Page_Header_3).  Hard to predict at runtime when overflow will occur
    - I can move the data from Page_Header_3 to the body if I can make it show at the top of every page. Working on this at the moment. Easiest, but I can't get it to work
The body data with the items looks like this:
    <items_subform>
    -<items_TABLE>
    --<items_BODY>
    ---<items_data_HEADER>
    ---<items_data_BODY>
    ---<items_data_FOOTER>
    --<items_FOOTER>

  • If a master page footer is changed why don't the changes appear on the pages?

The master page footer is not uniformly applied to the pages.  Page 1 lacks the chapter title but has the correct chapter number.  All the rest of the pages have both chapter number and title, but show the chapter number as 2.  I have updated the numbers in the book panel but to no effect.

Thanks, I did that but it did not help.  I have been messing with this first chapter for so long there may be a lot of conflicting instructions embedded that have not been cleared.

  • In Aperture Books, changes to Master Page FONTS don't get applied to pages?

In making a book in Aperture, I can change the font in a Master Page (or create a new Master Page with the font I like), but when I try to apply the changed/new Master Page to any given page in the book, the font I want doesn't show up.  It's still there in the Master Page, but doesn't get applied.  I've seen the thread on a related subject from 2008, but the one work-around proposed there is over my head, technically.  Is there anything new to help me in 2012?

  • CS4 - Master won't display in first page

    Hi,
I have a file that I did not originally make. I have opened this file, imported masters from a template file (that I have made) and applied said masters to all pages in the document.
My problem is the first page. The master won't display. I have tried different masters, both the ones that originally came with the document and my new ones. Nothing. I have checked for white boxes, and nothing is covering the page.
Is there a function I have missed? Or is this a bug? None of the other files I have received from the same company have this problem.
Hope someone out there can help me.

Hmmm, doesn't really ring any bells with me anyway, not that that means much...  You say the first page, does your document have spreads?  Could it be that there is nothing on the master page that relates to that spread...?  Doesn't seem likely.
If one particular document is behaving strangely, a very easy way to check it's not corrupted is export it to inx or idml, depending on your version.  See here for instructions.
