CS4 Matching Metadata to File Properties

Is there a way in Bridge's Metadata to either see or modify Window's File Properties? Specificaly Subject or Comment?
I am scanning old family photos and what to document what is written on the back plus who is in the photo. I know I can tag them with the people, but that doesn't really tell me who is who when it is a large group.... I was hoping not to clutter the "title" with the place, people, event, and other comments.
I will be sharing these photos with people that do not own Bridge, so Window's file properties is where I need to have the information stored. Thank you!

If you click on file/file info you can enter what ever you want in description. This field and keywords (tags) can be read in Windows Explorer.

Does Oracle Text index file metadata? For example, when you select File, then Properties in MS Word, you can specify Author, Subject, Manager and other information. This is "metadata" inside the file.
Since Oracle uses Stellent's InsideOut Content Access technology and www.stellent.com states that it does indeed pull metadata from all supported file types, does Oracle Text take advantage of this?

Ahem, well this is interesting. I haven't found a way to write a custom panel to display the JobName in CS and make it editable - perhaps a limitation to the panel language. One option is to create a template to apply to multiple files - either through the flyout menu in File Info, Replace in the Advanced panel or via the File Browser > Edit > Replace Metadata. Below is a template that I created. Best way to create your own is to save a template with the JobName property present, then go in an edit the file to remove the other template data and retain the jobName section as I did below. Edit the jobName value between the tags and rename the template - then use the Replace command to apply it to files in CS. Not a pretty work around. Otherwise I would suggest using another field going forward. File Properties: Document Kind... Where Does it Come From?

In Bridge's metadata subsection "File Properties", what exactly
is "Document Kind"? Is it synonymous with the file's mime type?
I've read through Adobe's XMP specification document (http://partners.adobe.com/public/developer/xmp/sdk/index.html) and I've seen many of Adobe's XMP schemas and data elements defined there, but I can't find where "Document Kind" is defined.
The closest I come is page 39 where the XMP specification notes that the dublin core schema has a property called "format" with a value of "MIMEType". Is "dc:format" synonymous with "file properties: document kind"?

Metadata - File Properties - Dimensions (in inches) Doesn't Match PS

This has been troubling me for some time now. The info in
CS4 Bridge Metadata/File Properties/Dimensions (in inches
) never matches what I see in Photoshop CS4. The pixel dimension in Bride is right but not in inches.
I'm talking about plain jane .jpg's and .png's in particular. For instance, a png file that has:
Dimensions: 2100x1500
In Inches: 8.8x6.3
in Bridge
but in PS the inches on the rulers is a perfect 7x5.
This proportion of difference is the same from file to file. The larger the picture/image is, the more difference there is from Bridge to PS.
What gives? Why can't Bridge get the inches correct?

5. Divide out the pixel dimension by 300 (dpi)
and it is 7x5. This is not an image taken by a camera. It is a public domain template for PS.
If I look at this info from an image I took with my Nikon D700, everything matches up.
I only find this difference with 3rd party art work.
I have goobs of .png's and .psd's I've collected over the years and I plan to use Bridge's Output workspace to create printouts so I can find templates I want for whatever reason (seniors, families,...). I plan to put the inch dimension into the filename but the inch dimension in Bridge is incorrect, and I don't want to have to load hundreds of templates into PS to get this info.

Author metadata separated by semi-colons truncated in file properties and "Get Info"

I'm using Acrobat Professional 9.0 (CS3) for Mac to edit the metadata for a collection of PDFs to be made available on the web. When I enter the data, I am inputting a list of authors separated by commas, like this: Smith J, Watson C, Brown J. If I click on "Additional metadata", the data I've already entered is transposed into the various XMP fields. And the commas separating the author names are changed to semi-colons. I gather that this happens because XMP wants to separate multiple authors with semi-colons, and Acrobat wants the metadata in XMP fields to match the metadata stored for the file properties. Fine.
However, if I save such a PDF and then use Get Info on my Mac (OSX 10.4) to look at the file properties, the list of authors is now truncated where the first semi-colon appears. The list is also truncated in Windows XP if I right-click and select properties. The list is also truncated when I look at the file properties in Preview on my Mac, or if I look at file properties using FoxIT, or using Adobe Acrobat Reader 7 or earlier. The only way a site visitor will actually be able to view the full list of authors in a file saved this way is to use Adobe Reader version 8 or later.
I would like to preserve XMP/Dublin Core/etc metadata in the proper format in the XMP code, but would also like users of standard, popular file viewers to be able to access the full list of authors. Is there a way to do this with Acrobat 9?
Also, once I've saved a file and the XMP metadata has been altered, Acrobat seems to permanently change the way that the authors are listed in the file properties. I cannot manually change those settings any longer without Acrobat overriding my changes and converting commas to semi-colons, or surrounding the entire list of authors in quotation marks. Is there a way to get around these Acrobat overrides and manually take control of my metadata again?
Does Windows Vista read the authors list correctly in the file properties if it is separated by semi-colons?
It seems to me that in an attempt to get XMP metadata working smoothly across the entire CS line, Adobe has jumped the gun somewhat and is now forcing Acrobat users to use "file properties" metadata that is really only fully compatible with Adobe products. Is there a way I can get some backwards compatibility on this?

Bridge has some pretty powerful and helpful features. However, I am unable to figure out how to access the non-XMP "file properties" fields through Bridge, and if I add metadata via Bridge, then I run into the same problem regarding the use of semi-colons to separate authors.
If I had more time, or a larger set of files I might investigate the use of ExtendScript to import all my metadata from an Excel file (where it already exists) into the PDF file properties and XMP metadata.
The best solution for my case though appears to be to use Acrobat 9 and to do the double-edit process for each file. I should be able to just cut-and-paste the metadata from the Excel file, and then if I save the Authors list to the end, I can simply paste it once into the XMP field (through the Advanced metadata button) and then return to the regular file properties page and paste it again in there, where Acrobat will add quotes around it.
Lastly, if anyone else happens to find this post and is looking for similar information, I would recommend searching in the Bridge forum as well as the Acrobat forum.

Editing metadata in the file properties window

I’m using Win XP SP3 on a “normal” Desktop-PC. Since my problem is not connected to hardware I think that description is enough but I do not know which software information is required. So you may ask. Important is maybe that I am running Adobe Acrobat and Reader simultaneously on the same machine.
The problem: I always changed and edited some of the metadata of my PDF files by bringing up the file properties window of the PDF (right click - properties). Next to the “General”-Tab is the “PDF”-Tab. You can see the title, author, topic, dates and PDF-Version of the document. The first four fields where always editable textboxes. I get used to put in some comments and other important information because I didn’t want to use any tool. Now the complete window is locked. Is this because of the new 9.3.3 Reader update? I updated so many times and never anything like this happened. How can I turn back to the old behavior?
I do not want to edit those information in Acrobat by choosing File and then propertis because it takes much more time because i have to open the file (if it is one its fine) but if there are more where the same info shall be in I'd like to use the built in function of the properties sheet in windows.

I just ran the Acrobat repair installation and I got the expected function back. In addition it does not matter any longer which icon I click (reader or acrobat) to open Acrobat. The reason for having both installed is just that I needed a "pdf viewer" from the first minute after having installed the OS and installing Acrobat needs much more configuration in my case then just the "tiny" Reader equivalent. The best thing: I did not realize any other problem.

I have this printer and use Leopard, but I don't have this problem I am useing the 6.2 driver. There are two drivers on their website, I am using only the driver that came with the machine. I would re-install the driver. Secondly and this caught me up a bit at first. You open the CS print manager, press print and then the Epson driver emerges, there i s no direct access from CS3 to the driver. Secondly in the Epson driver there are two or three set of drop down menus, the one that permits setting the paper profile is not exactly where you expect it, just have a look through all the menus(I am not sitting in fronto of my mac right now so I am of limited help). I think that you can populate metadata automatically with the "Content Categorizer" component.
You can : - populate the metadata with the Word file properties
- populate the metadata with some references that are included in the Word document.
For the reverse side, I think you have to develop your own component...

I am looking for a way to extract all the information in the File Properties to a .csv. I have downloaded the Export Metadata script and it, works except I cannot include the File Properties in the Schema field. I hope there is a way to modify this script to include the File Properties.

I've been using Premiere Elements 9 for a couple of years now, and a few months ago I began having problems importing AVI files created from a BlackMagic Intensity Pro capture card. (These issues were not previously occurring, and since they surfaced, I have exhausted the various settings for the BlackMagic card, used various software such as BlackMagic's own Media Express as well as the freeware VirtualDub, and still have the following problems.)
In addition, these AVI files play just fine, in their entirety, using Windows Media Player and in Quicktime.
The problem (or possibly two, but I suspect they could be related) is that most of the AVI files I attempt to import will either (1) import all video and NO audio, or (2) import ONLY a short segment of audio and video, and the length that Elements imports varies. Usually only in the range of a minute or two. The rest of the file is not imported at all.
After much digging in forums, and testing various settings in trying to figure out the issue, I decided to back up all of my files and completely wipe all hard drives and start over with a fresh installation of Windows and Premiere Elements 9. I haven't installed much else yet, as I wanted to first find out if the reinstallation improved things with Elements.
For the first project I created in Elements after the reinstallation, Elements successfully imported an entire AVI that was nearly 2 hours long, audio and video. This was a file that previously would not import properly into Elements. This suggested that my earlier installation of Elements must have been corrupted somehow. At this point I was very hopeful that all was well.
I proceeded to edit the video as I had wanted, saved the project, and exported it to an MPEG format file. I had originally wanted to export it as an MOV, but I hadn't yet installed Quicktime, so Elements couldn't do that just yet. The MPEG export was successful and plays fine.
However, I then installed Quicktime, and once it was finished, I restarted the PC and reloaded the same project. This time, Elements claimed the media was offline. I double-clicked on a segment of the video, and directed Elements to the raw file, but then an error message popped up: "The selected file cannot be linked because its type (video) does not match the original file's type (audio and video)." This was the same file I had JUST edited and of which I created an MPEG.
I tried creating a new project and the "Get Media" function to import the AVI again, but this time only the video imported with NO audio. (This would explain why the error message said what it did, but not why the audio wasn't imported.)
What in the world is going on with Elements??? I am baffled since the ONLY task I have done on this machine after a complete reinstallation of both Windows and Elements is edit one AVI. I find it very hard to believe that just installing Quicktime caused this.
Some info on my system:
System: Asus P6T w/ Intel i7 920 and 12 GB memory
OS: Windows 7 Ultimate
Video Software: Premiere Elements 9
Capture Card: BlackMagic Intensity Pro (PCI-e)
Capture Software: AVIs recorded with either BlackMagic Media Express or VirtualDub (only prior to the reinstallation, as neither of these programs are currently installed)
I'm getting to the point with Elements that I might need to just abandon it and find something else that is more reliable. Anybody have suggestions to help with this, so I won't have to migrate?

We think that we need to start off with definiting the properties of these .avi files that you are importing into Premiere Elements 9.0/9.0.1 (assumed that you are working for the required 9.0.1 Update).
You say that the "avi" was created from a "BlackMagic Intensity Pro capture card". What are the properties of this .avi that you imported into Premiere Elements? Not all .avi are created equal. What is the video and audio compression, frame size, frame rate, interlaced or progressive, pixel aspect ratio, typical duration?
Based on the properties of the video what have you been setting as the project preset?

File properties: mysterious dates for created, modified and last opened

I've seen this ever since I started using my Mac - I am a relatively new Mac user (a year or more vs. well, decades on Win/PC).
Finder: click on a file and it will show its properties. It will have a "More info" button.
The dates displayed between the 2 above are different.
1) In the "immediate" display it would say something like:
Last opened: Today at 10PM
- this wrong day, "correct" time
- considering that it will display this at say 7AM "today"...well, it's a "future" date/time
2) If you click the More info button, the "truth" comes out
Last opened: Yesterday at 10PM (accurate)
Never really cared, but thought I'd ask here. At some point, if I start some development on the Mac, and filesystems, file properties are involved, this will obviously be an issue. I don't even know if this affects file searching based on these properties - again, new user, using Mac for very specific purpose, but usage is definitely on the rise, so I'd like to get some direction on very basic OS behavior like this fully understood.

I've seen many times when corrupt date settings in the global user preference file cause wrong modified dates to be displayed in finder. in that case if you make a different user they will be displayed correctly. the file in question is ~/library/preferences/.GlobalPreferences.plist.
It's ok to be technical in your response....if it goes over my head, I'll be frank and ask for clarification....
- Is it a user-defined preference/setting?
- It's almost like a busted UTC/time zone routine (somehow "TODAY" is UTC, but the time value doesn't match) re: 10PM last night on PT is/was "today" in UTC....

I am so glad you responded to this thread. You are absolutely right. I copied the entire code including the project name (guid) and that solved the error problem.
Now, what did you do to get the message box? I added the watch and I could see the values but how do I get these values in a table? If I remember correctly, in your blog, you mentioned something about using derived columns. I am familiar with Derived Columns
but how do I do that? I appreciate your response.

I used a second script task to show all variable values. It has a
MessageBox in it and between all
variables I added a
newline to make it more readable...
But with an Execute SQL Task and parameters you can also put these values in a Table... or you can read the file in a Data Flow Task and add those variables (as metadata) to each record with a Derived Column
