CS4 = No more scanners

Did CS4 change where it looks for the scanner drivers? I have both Canon and Epson scanners and they do not show up in File/Import even after re-installing the drivers.

> All you're doing when you go through the TWAIN import menu is launching the scanner's software through a plug-in and tying up Photoshop in the meantime.
Understood. But some makers supply different software for the plug-in than for the standalone app. It may be stupid, but it's true, and the level of control available is not the same.
For some of us who scan relatively infrequently and are saddled with these scanners, the 45 seconds that Photoshop is tied up is a small price to pay to get to specify the actual resolution in a number instead of "high" or "medium" and to be able to make pre-scan adjustments other than "photo" or "document."
No one is calling you wrong, but there are still legitimate reasons to use the TWAIN plug-in. I'm OK with Adobe removing it from the default install, but it's still a good thing it made it to one of the distribution disks as an option.

  • Can't save PDF's in illustator CS4 any more

I just upgraded to windows 7 a few days ago.
For a couple days there was not this problem, but now I can't save anything as a PDF
file. I un installed Illustrator and just re installed it. I can save in PS so it seems to be isolated to illustrator. I tried all the other "saves" but everything locks up and I have to hit esp button to undo the lock up. Any help is appreciated.

that is helpful but confusing to me. I guess I'd need more info on how to complete that task
...i.e. where to type in the address, and the other place to move folder.
I'll talk to my tech and see if he can offer some assistance. But if you can elaborate, I'd appreciate it. Thanks again.

  • Bridge CS4 is slow, slow, slow (so is Photoshop CS4)

AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual-Core 6000+ CPU, 4 GB RAM, Windows XP SP2 32-bit, ATI Radeon HD 2600 Pro graphics card, two 1-TB hard disks with hundreds of GB free
With Bridge CS3 it took less than ten seconds to build the thumbnails of a folder with 85 image files. With Bridge CS4, it takes almost two minutes. Anybody having the same problem?
And where have the preference options for the thumbnail quality gone? I wanted to set the thumbnail quality to 'low' for a speed-up but I cannot. The options just aren't there in the Bridge CS4 preferences dialog ... and it takes forever building those thumbnails one after one, about one per second. And as if that wasn't bad enough already, Bridge CS4 extracts more than hundred thumbnails from only 85 raw image files, according to the text appearing in the status bar next to the spinning radar icon. There is something seriously screwed up.
And Photoshop CS4 is sluggish, too (no matter if Enable OpenGL is on or off).
So by and large, CS4 is a major disappointment. I hope for some updates REAL soon. For now, I am back to CS3. :(

Nope. There is no star icon, no square, and below the workspace options there's the Content pane. Why don't you simply put the thumbnail quality options where they belong and where they always have been?
EDIT: Now I found out what Michelle was talking about: the so-called path bar. Of course I disabled that silly path bar first thing after installing Bridge CS4 so I didn't notice that the UI of one of the most essential settings is located there---and
    i only
there ... even though it has nothing to do with paths. (Suggestion what to do to this UI's designer removed.)

  • Can no longer import mp4 (XDCAM) footage into CS4

Hopefully somebody will be able to help me with this!
I am trying to import some Sony EX1 (mp4) footage into Premiere CS4, but am getting the following error message:
“file import failure: Error message – the importer reported a generic error”
I have done this process on many occasions over the last year or so and experienced no problems whatsover.
But for some reason I am no longer able to import the mp4 files...or even access these file types in historic projects!
I have checked the footage in the Sony clip browser in it seems fine, and plays fine when opened with a VLC player, so am a bit stumped to what the problem could be.
(For info, I am using a PC with 8gb RAM and a Quadro CX. I did have After Effects installed a month ago back and switched to VISTA. All Adobe updates have been installed, and I have sufficient memory)
Thanks in advance for any pointers or assistance

Of course using Premiere CS3 I have the problem of the audio constantly cutting out on the XDCAM MP4 files, so I really could do with a solution to this problem in CS4 asap - can anyone else help?
It is definitely a new problem for me, which almost certainly revolves around the impoter process. It did not affect my editing until 2-3 months ago but suddenly now renders CS4 Premiere more or less useless, on both on my laptop and my main PC.
It is possible that the problem only affects projects where one of the XDCAM files is very long and/or was originally saved across two separate cards at the time of recording. In which case it may not be a new problem, simply one I had not encountered before because I'd notg used any such long files.

  • Poor RAM management in Photoshop CS4 - need help!

I have done numerous hours of research over the years only to give up and come back to this subject later on. I will try again!
I must ask: is there ANY way to get Photoshop CS4 to automatically flush used RAM after closing image files? I'm tired and annoyed of CS4 eating more and more RAM without freeing anything after an image has been closed. An image shouldn't still eat up memory when it isn't even open anymore. It seems to be terrible RAM management of the program itself and how Adobe has forgotten to write that little snippit of code to clear the RAM after an image has been closed.
I know this is not because of:
    Cache levels
Setting too large of a saved history state; purging history cache or any kind of cache still never frees RAM
A lack of updates; I have been up to date with CS4 very punctually as they were released
The computer I am on; this poor RAM management has been around since CS2 and it's the same on the last 4 computers I have used
Does CS5 still do this too?

Your historically conditioned to believe software apps should swap data a standard way. The way your using the system is probably not the most effective processing for your workflow.
    -  I have hundreds of TIFFS that take 60-120MB each in processing, and 8gb  of RAM. The more total RAM actually usable that I can use the better.  How the heck can using less of what is actually available RAM enhance my  workflow? Standard are standards for a reason. The ink industry for  printing is non-standardized and people waste $3-5 billion+ a year only  increasing on unused ink that is still remaining in their cartridges, because there is no standard way of manufacturing ink, filling cartridges, or monitoring how much ink is actually left in a cartridge. I'd love for more standards in more markets. Unless natively stable, all other programs on my computer work flawlessly with said demonized traditional methods and standards, even in high bandwidth applications a hell of a lot more intensive than  Photoshop CS4 will EVER be. Currently people keep disregarding the fact that in my situation CS DOESNT FREE THE RAM.  CS4 is balloon. Balloon inflate. Never deflate even when emptied. Overflow into other rooms of critical OS space where balloon shouldn't be when it fill the room full. How many analogies must I give? Must I use sign language? Binary?
You don’t have enough experience with these topics. This is actually a
true statement. Most companies with systems large and small have to
think about what it costs to process specific jobs. If one in a thousand
jobs swap, a decision must be made to know how much it would cost to
retrofit a very expensive environment to keep that one job swap from
occurring. Most times it is better to let the swap happen for this
non-mission critical item than pay $50,000 to upgrade all systems.
I said NON EMERGENCY SITUATIONS.  Emergencies are once in a while. You're repeating what I said like a parrot, but in different longer sentences with more words telling me I don't get what I'm talkinga bout. You're missing the full picture of what I am actually saying. That 1 in 1000 overflow would be exactly true in my situation with 7GB used, but it's not. Why not? Because the CS4 balloon will not deflate itself or reuse the empty space inside the balloon when it's needed, and the OS isn't given back any of the empty space to work with to know it doesn't need to page anything. In turn CS4 is going to try and scratch too when the OS is telling it that is has no more RAM left when indeed it does, but its hiding it in its own reserve balloon from itself. If a company needed just 700MB more room and either they spend $50k to upgrade to that, or get CS4 to release some space once in awhile, they'd sure as hell bother Adobe or write their own mod to force CS4 to release unused allocated RAM to get it.
Self inflicted only because I want to push the limit of what is actually usable on my machine, not some 'safe zone' with high tolerance. My system is tuned for a fine line of performance and I know what it can hande. I know what it uses and it does not spike usage for random OS operations. It can handle 7GB to 7.2GB of RAM of freely used RAM to one active program if it needs that big of a workspace to work. If CS4 isn't going to reuse the hollow areas in that balloon, then that's not my fault. My OS can handle the fine tuning, and CS4 is what cannot, obviously, since it can see that much RAM but not use the last %10 correctly.

  • Photoshop CS4 crashes while quiting

    Hello all,
I haven't found a thread on this elsewhere.
I have been using CS4 (with the latest version 11.0.2) for a couple of years and for some time now CS4 and/or Bridge have had a habit of crashing when I quit the application; this message shows up: Photoshop.../Bridge... quit unexpectidely... No news from Adobe after filling in the "comments" window and I suspect that since no updates exist for CS4 any more I can expect no response? The activity monitor show normal, I have 2GB of memory and I don't perform fancy layer work or anything out of the ordinary such as video. I have used Onyx to clean up and nothing more is any different.
I use mac OS 10.5 on a 20" iMac intel.
    Thanks for any pointers.

Thank you both for such a fast answer! Since plug-ins have been installed for some time now I discounted them and  proceeded in the order of trouble shooting as pointed out, one by one, first: opening CS4 with command-alt-shift. Lo and behold and  after several attempts, it seems that PS and Bridge are both, more responsive and don't crash anymore... It might confirm what I first thought of, that I needed some "cleaning"...
Can you pls explain this command which I'm not familiar with and other points to watch for? In Bridge I went all the way and clicked both "reset preferences" and "purge entire thumbnail cache" -  I have to reset my preferences but that's OK...
    So far so good.

  • PP CS3 vs PP CS4 for RT previews?

I think the RT playback setting options of PP CS3 are better than what we have in CS4. I had much more RT and the images looked smoother on an NTSC monitor when I opted for Accelerated GPU Effects in PP CS3. I see that you can select an HDMI or even an S-Video out put as the external device during RT previews using PP CS4 but the way it works now I get interlacing artifacts and odd flashes of green and white when using transitions, text titles or even PIPs with motion paths. I think the old method of PP CS3 played the VGA overlay and relied on the GPU to interlace the overlay to the NTSC monitor. I think PP CS4 tries to interlace the actual video codec of the clip to the HDMI/S-Video port during the RT preview instead of letting the GPU convert the overlay. With PP CS4 I can have the NTSC monitor preview look good or the VGA preview look good but not both. I had to realy tweak the setting of my graphics card using PP CS4 unlike the easier method of PP CS3. I see the icon to inable or disable rendered areas during RT previews is gone (Icon by the marker icon in the timeline panel).
Another thing I liked better about PP CS3 is the fact that the video card CC settings did not affect the RT previews of PP CS3. In other words I could drain the monitor images to black and white using the video cards color correction settings but it did not affect Premiere's video clips at all. CC had to be done using Premiere's CC (better method I think). Now the color calibrations made with the graphics card does affect the Premiere Pro RT playback.
I don't have PP CS4 I only used the demo. I liked things the way they were. What do you folks think of PP CS4 VS PP CS3 for RT previews?

Is this what you want to hear?
Your system is maybe to slow and your video card is outdated. CS4 has more GPU acceleration than CS3. In fact Adobe has said it that Cs4 is optimized for Vista 64 and a quad core and at least 4 gigs of RAM 'are recommended'.
Your computer specs are a few years outdated so CS3 will be faster than CS4 on our computer.
That is a fact. If you would have given your computer specs when first asked we could have cleared this up.
If I'm wrong someone will correct me. You need to update your video card badly if you want to use CS4.
There is your answer. Newer versions of software tend to require more updated computers. This is how things work. Does this answer your question?
    Jim,
I'm speechless. You won't upgrade out of moral principal because you don't like the company that created the internet installer? I'm speechless man. You want me to buy you a dvd of the trial? I will if you can't afford it. email me your address if this is the case. [email protected] Your smart and you could help out alot here if you just tried the software instead of just going by what you read on forums to give people advice.

  • Any way of getting hold of InCopy CS4?

I work for a small publishing department within a much larger institution with no IT budget and no way of upgrading to intel macs so that we can upgrade to CS5 (unless someone wins the lottery). We produce corporate reports to very tight deadlines and have identified InCopy as a way to shorten our production processes and give us some work/life balance back. HOWEVER, we can't get hold of InCopy CS4 any more.
It is exceptionally frustrating that Adobe is effectively forcing us to upgrade to CS5 - which we are not in a position to do for another couple of years. We're not a cutting edge design agency, but we are subject to some of the same pressures/requirements. Doesn't seem to be a very good way of encouraging people to use your products, if you ask me!

Nice folks there. I met a few of them last night at the NYC InDesign user group meeting.
If they can help, that's great.

  • Server Format Preserve White Space in DW CS4

I have the Charon server format suite that I used in CS3, but it does not install in CS4. I was wondering is there something available for CS4 or more importantly how do you preserve the white space or line breaks in dynamic data that is displayed? I am using ASP/VB.
    thanks,
    Eric

I use "empty" inline comments to keep line breaks where I want them. Even works on function/procedure calls with a long argument lists.
    for x in 1..2
    loop
      proca(                 --
        arg1 => 'something', --
        arg2 => 42);
end loop;...the formatter will leave it alone.
Be careful with using q' to delimit strings. Those have the opposite problem, where newlines are inserted by the formatter.

  • Slicing and dicing with FW CS4?

    Hi there,
I am having a few issues understanding FW CS4 and where it
fits in the market, but i think i am understanding it now and was
looking for some confirmation and advice.
Basically i have created my website in PS CS4 and i am ready
to slice and dice which i would normally do in PS but weather i am
missing something it appears that once i export to html and slices
i will need to edit the CSS and fine tune it i.e. Absolute
    positioning, etc etc..
It appears FW CS4 supports more advanced slicing features ...
so i was wondering if i do the following, is this considered the
    recommended way ??
Create my design etc in PS (due to it being quite advanced -
and i just don't see the same features in FW)
Import my PSD into FW CS4
Slice in FW and export after customising each DIV etc
I don't know if anyone can help me here????
Is this right? or should i still do my slicing in PS?? I
presume not as FW seems more powerful
FW also seems to support exporting to EXTERNAL css file...
I look forward to any info anyone can offer

I agree with Linda regarding the creation of the design. If
    there is
something in particular you are trying to do in PS and can't
    find the
equivalent in FW, please let us know.
If you follow the guidelines in the tutorials below, FW will
    generate a
relatively positioned layout, using floats. If objects
    (slices, text or
rectangles) overlap, FW switches to Absolute Positioning.
If you are planning to use the CSS and images export in
    Fireworks, I
strongly recommend you read the tutorials listed below.
    Chances are,
yes, you will need to fine tune the CSS after exporting from
    Fireworks.
    >>> So i would use the html that was exported to
    either fine tune it
or use it as reference etc
It could go either way, but I think you would have a better
    chance using
the CSS generated from FW by installing the new CSS export
    script (3rd link)
    >>>I presume its better to have all images as
    "background" images on a
div etc, does FW CS4 take care of this?? if so how?? ...
    otherwise i
presume i just need to edit the css manually?
If the graphics are just cosmetic then yes, it's probably a
    good idea to
set them as background images. FW has both foreground and
    background
slices. You choose which you want from the Property
    inspector. FW will
    export them accordingly.

  • Illustrator CS4 Error loading photoshopimport.aip

After I update system to Yosemite 10.10.2.....
I got a great problem with Illustrator CS4 which can't link to photoshop tif eps psd...........
I get the message "Error loading plugins". The plugin in question is "photoshopimport.aip".
I had re-installed all CS4  but still not work.
That mean I can't do my job by CS4 any more....OMG
    I haven't use time machine......how can I go back the to systemX 10.9 ?
    I hate Yosemite!!!!!!!!
    Pls help!!!!!!

    CS4 was - I don't know - 5 years ago?
In the meantime Apple has changed the development platform (you need software to develop other software) at least once. It would be kind of an effort to update all the old code. You first need to port it to the new development platform then update what doesn't work then go through all the testing etc. etc.
Kind of like the old yearbook you did back in the days in Quark XPress 3 and now that you have long switched to InDesign they ask you to dig that up to change some of the images and fix those 7 typos in the articles. I mean why do you charge that much for it, should be done in 20 minutes.

  • Problems creating Blu Ray Discs with AME Presets in CS4

After several weeks wasted (months back) with an ATI 5750 graphics card in Win 7/and CS4 (not working correctly) - I finally resolved by swapping with a NVidia GTS250 card .....but all my troubles are not over yet ....
I'm running Premiere CS4 and have finally just got down to testing creation of a Blu Ray test disc from some AVCHD 1920x1080 HD footage I am editing from my new camera.
My work in CS4 is just testing at present as I used to use CS3 [still have on my dual core machine with Matrox RTX2]  - and have successfully created Blu Ray discs from HDV material in CS3 - but using Blu Ray MPEG 2 settings.
    New machine Win 7 - 64 bit
Premiere CS4 is at 4-2-0 version
    Encore at 4-0-1 version
    These are the last updates
I've selected a short test piece (about 2 mins)on Premiere timeline and initially tried Media export using Adobe Media encoder.
I selected H264 BluRay codec in media encoder. Hi quality 1080 25 fps.(PAL)
This creates dual MP4 Video and Audio streams
Encode process goes OK, just slightly slower than real time, (I'm using i7-930 Quad Core and Win 7 64 Bit)
Now - when I come to input the encoded video file into Encore as an Asset - Encore freezes and the whole machine locks up !!!
Audio file imports OK but the Encore software does not like the encoded Video file
I've re-installed Premiere and Encore twice in case of bad install. It wasn't that.
I also found Adobe Media player couldn't play the file created by AME either - but it would play on a Premiere timeline?
So is Adobe Media encoder messing up here ?
So - .....3 hours of testing later ....I stumble on a Support thread from someone on the Forum that they found AME preset has "HIGH" in the Encoding Profile Preset - when it should be MAIN ?.
Not sure what these settings do - but tried changing that parameter and re-encoded the Video file with H264 BluRay setting - all to no avail as when I try importing again the machne just locks up ?
My final search in Premiere help file about creating BluRay discs ONLY talks about using MPEG 2 BluRay setting for creating BluRay discs
It does not specify H264. Why is that?
Can one of the moderators / experts confirm if H264 Blu ray format  is supported for BluRay disc creation in CS4 please??
Better still please tell me the exact settings for Adobe Media encoder so it will import into Encore without having to be transcoded again.
    H264 should work - yes ?
    Final comment
As an alternative method, I tried sending the short timeline in Premiere (using Dynamic Link)  to Encore to test that route for making a BluRay disc
Bearing in mind the sequence is only about 2 mins long - when I ty to Transcode using the engine within Encore - the process takes a ridiculously long time and twice it has crashed just before the end of the process......
Can someone explain why the encode process in Encore takes such a long time as I thought it used the Adobe Media encoder engine as well.?
Adobe Media Encoder is much faster used stand alone mode.
Encore seems to not use that ?
Anyway - conclusion is that using Encore to encode the tmeline is a non starter as it takes too long.
why so slow  on such a fast machine?....I know HD encoding is demanding but not that demanding with a decent machine.
    So the question is ....
How do I encode in the most efficient and fastest way possible (using H264)  for Blu Ray authoring into Encore without need for more Transcodes?
Any help or suggestions welcome as I'm now hitting my head against the wall :-)
    I have not gone through Adobe Support desk as it is usually a waste of time.{Dear VP of Adobe Customer Service - please do get this sorted out in the near future  if you want to retain loyal customers....}
I cannot believe how disappointing  CS4 is turning out to be.
After investing in a very fast PC machine etc the whole user experience is somewhat of a let down.
Why so many issues for such a small test??

Picking up on my original post about H264 - as I have a dual boot machine I also have a clean  installed Win 7 /64bit partition which I use for general bits of work.
On that I have CyberPowerDVD SW installed which plays all Video files fine including BluRay material etc.
Interestingly when I try to play the file that AME has created from the BluRay H264 preset it says 'It cannot play the file as it is a format it does not recognise...'
This is really weird and would suggest AME is not encoding the file corrrectly??
I have already removed and made a re-install of CS4 on my main [video editing] partition but there were some fragments of CS4 left intact
How do I completely remove everything?
I tried the CS4 clean script but it said it relied on Microsoft CLean Up utility and gave a link
When I loooked on Microsoft web site the link to download it had been removed?
Also Adobe say the CS4 remove script is no longer supported ?
Can anyone advise on the correct tool/procedure to completely remove CS4 from a Win 7/64bit installation so I can then try re-install of CS4 one more time....in case the installation is corrupt in some way
I can't explain why I am having this problem otherwise if other people find AME encodes OK with H264 BluRay preset.

  • Indesign CS4 crashing on quit

This has been happening for a while now. Almost every single time I am done with Indesign and close it, I get a send error report window and when I check the details it says UNKNOWN for the error code. This is true for the PC at work, and at home.
Both have XP with SP3, and Indesign CS4 with the latest update. It used to occur before the updates too.
    Has this been solved?
If I open Indesign and shut it without opening a file it is OK. But if I have it running for a certain amount of time with a file open, then when I close the file and exit out of indesign it almost always happens.

I haven't seen any other reports like this, and it doesn't happen to me with SP2. I'm inclined to think it's something particular to your configuration.
The first thing I would try is replacing the preference files. Corrupt prefs can cause all sorts of weirdness, and my sense from my own system, where I've replaced them a couple of times, is that CS4 is more prone to preference problems than earlier versions.
It might also be caused by some third-party plugin, or even another program you have running in the background. Do you have, for example, a font manager running? Even a bad font might cause this.

  • CS4 The Three `F' modes of PS

I like to be able to pull/drag images around in the photoshop work space, but unless the image is bigger than the workspace in some dimension, photoshop will not allow that unless one enters the 2nd `F' mode.
In that mode the interace automatically goes full screen, which I almost never want.  With a 25 inch monitor, that just isn't necessary.  At least not for the vast majority of my work.
So is there some way to make PS allow dragging of image in the 1st `F' mode, or conversely, of making 2nd `F' mode something besides full screen?
I'm not really sure if I'm numbering the modes correctly so to make sure its clear which modes I'm speaking of... I'll call the `F' mode with the black background, the 3rd `F' mode.
So starting at that 3rd `F' mode, press `F' to get to 1st and `F' again to get to 2nd.   1 and 2 in that scheme are the 2 I'm talking about.
Or just open PS and you should be in what I'm calling 1st `F' mode

Sorry for the confusion. When i said scroll the image slightly bigger
than the document window, i should have said zoom the image in
(change the viewing percentage or view size or zoom ratio) using the scroll wheel on the
mouse or with the zoom tool.
You can enable zooming with the scroll wheel on the mouse by
    Edit>Preferences>General>Zoom with Scroll Wheel.
In cs4 in the stardard screen mode, using tabs, zoom the image in till it's slightly bigger
than the document window and then using the hand tool you can pan the image around
    even past the document edges.
The full screen mode is supposed to allow more room for the document,
so that's why you don't see some things like the frame around the document.
The second example posted was just to show that cs5 has some improvements in
    stardard screen mode versus cs4.

  • PS cs4 went bad - replacing with PS Elements 11

should I remove the PS cs4 app.  I copied the pics that were in it.

cs4 went bad? reinstall it, why buy a lesser program? But if your question was can you have them both on, then yes you can install both software. But if you no longer need cs4 then indeed uninstall it.
But cs4 is more advanced than elements. You will be able to do more with it
