Cs4.. nook export for epub skipping pages.

I have a book .indb file. Has 335 chapters in it. But each page is small. If I try to export a file for digital editions it skipps pages at after a certain page.  I checked out which page was the last processed. Then checked the other pages out all around it. There is nothing wrong with these pages.  So I made two smaller book files of the .indb type.
Thinking I would narrow down the problem page.
Part1: export created an .epub file... no pages skipped!
Part2: export said it skipped the last three pages. Still gave me visible pages up to the last three pages. Just what I thought if the error stated ...it skipped 3 pages.
So I thought it could be memory.  I only have 1gig of ram right now.
I decided to see if I reduced the number of chapters or pages in Part2  and included the last three that were skipped maybe they would process.
So somewhere way above the last 3 ... I deleted 5 chapters .. they were up toward the beginning of the file.  Nowhere near the last three.
The entire part2 of the book file excluding the 5 I delete still including the last three pages processed.  There was nothing wrong with the skipped pages. So my question is. .. could it be because I only have 1gig of ram?
When a book file exports to digital editions, all chapters are being held in memory right... so maybe it couldn't process the last three. Any thoughts?
Thanks!

I really hate to tell you this. InDesign CS4 was the first version to support export to EPUB. Virtually no one used it. It was very limited and very buggy.
You really need to be using a later version of InDesign, especially with a very large book. If you're having problems, I'm not surprised.
There were improvements in CS5, and major improvements in CS5.5, CS6 and CC.

I have just installed In Design CS as part of the Adobe design premium suite. My problem is, Export for epub menu option is not visible. Hence I'm unable to export any epub. How can I bring back this option. Please help.
    Refer the attached screengrab.

Did you check your "Applications/Adobe InDesign CS5/Scripts" directory for additional directories "XHTML For Digital Editions" and "Export as XHTML"?
Be aware that both subdirectories "Resources" and "startup scripts" should be present with a bunch of additional scripts.

  • Exporting an ePub from pages on a retina MacBook Pro the size is 10x that of the same export on a MacBook Air. Why?

I am exporting an ePub from a 57.6 MB pages file on my retina MacBook pro and the exported epub is 982.9 MB in size. Exporting the exact same file from Pages on my MacBook Air give me a 97.8 MB ePub file.
Both machines run OSX 10.8.4 and Pages 4.3. And the Pages file resides in my Dropbox.
    What is going on here?

Also ask in the forum for Pages perhaps:

  • Export as ePub from Pages 09 v4.0.4 (614) crashes

Every time I export to ePub Pages crashes (Pages quit unexpectedly). I'm using OS X 10.6.4 on a 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo. File began in Pages. Inserted content into Apple's ePub template. Not using first page as cover and there are no floating images. Before I start tearing the file apart, any suggestions? Any length maximum for pages? Do objects causing wrap produce problems?

  • Why do InDesign CS 5.5 quit when i try to export for ePub?

Everytime i try to export my document for ePub, InDesign cs 5.5 quit. This is a book i made for print, but i would like to go forth and back from indesign to Adobe digital editions to make the changes that are needed end then use Dreamweaver for working with the CSS. But i can't seem to get an ePub out of the document! And I haven't got a clue what's stopping it for exporting...

I suspect that you ask this question in the wrong forum, you are in the Adobe Captivate forums, no publishing to epub. Perhaps you'll need the InDesign forum?

  • InDesign CS4 crashes when I export for epubs

Every time I choose "Export book for digital editions...." in the book menu, the program sometimes (but not always) exports to the epub format -- but then InDesign crashes and closes.  Sometimes there is an epub saved; sometimes there is not.
This is the error message I get:  "Runtime error:  R6025 - pure virtual function call".  Makes no sense to me, and it happens every time, no matter what other programs I do or do not have open.
I'm running Win XP SP3 and have plenty of memory.
    Thanks.

Good morning (for me, at least). OK, let's try to catch up.
I am still not 100% clear what your actual problem is. Perhaps you can start by restating it clearly and unambiguously.
    Has it changed since June?
You might post a screenshot of the way you have the TOC set up.
But the first step is to figure out if it happens with a brand new document that is untainted by your existing document. Perhaps something in your current document is making InDesign misbehave. So make sure that TOC export works right from a fresh document.
After that, then the task is to figure out what about your document is causing the problem. Exporting to IDML is a good step to clearing corruption, but is not 100% definitive. But if it works, great. Other steps including using the Pages (panel) > Move Pages function to move pages between documents, and also exporting individual stories to InDesign Tagged Text and then re-importing them into new documents. You can also export some items as snippets, though this is likely to have the same effect as IDML, but somewhat more self-contained (think "IDML Export of this page only.")
In short, this is Divide and Conquer. The problem could be in a story, in a style, on a page, in an image, etc., etc.
Additionally, you might want to consider ponying up $40 and engaging Adobe Support: http://adobe.com/go/supportportal.
Unfortunately support for CS4 is somewhat waning (it is 3 versions old!), and Adobe Support is not always stellar at solving problems quickly. Still, they are an option to consider.
Also, I'm definitely not an EPUB person. Hopefully when you post the details of what exactly you're doing some of the EPUB folks will still be paying attention to this thread and can point out any obvious issues they are aware if ("Hey! It's a known bug if you use the letter é in your EPUB TOC! Just remove it and you're good!" or whatever).
    You ask:
Do you know what I can do to fix the stack problem?  Is that an Adobe problem or a Windows problem?  I'm waaay beyond the limits of my expertise here.
It's not a "problem" per se -- the stack is a data structure that stores state about functions calls made by programs. Under normal circumstances, when a program crashes -- that is, when the operating system detects that a program has done something it should never do, such as tried to access a region of memory that does not belong to it, the operating system forcibly terminates the program -- the stack reflects information about the function that was currently executing, and the function that called it, and the function that called it, etc., etc., typically 20-50 levels deep.
Depending on exactly why the program faulted, sometimes this information is not available. For instance, if the program failure that caused the crash involved corruption on the stack.
Often the stack can give us useful clues about the nature of the crash, and those clues can help us avoid the crash. Simple example: "Oh, this crash is related to the third party extension Frobozz Magic Font! Turn it off!"
I just posted a question about the corrupted stack in the Microsoft forum, and they replied only Adobe can fix it.  It's apparently not a Microsoft problem.
They are, to a first order, correct. When InDesign crashes, it's an Adobe problem. The stack issue is a low-level diagnostic and is unlikely to be a real problem. But certainly no one could fix it without altering the InDesign program, and only Adobe can do that.
I'm getting pretty nervous about this; I have clients screaming for their books, and I'll have to refund some money if this isn't solved.  Whatever you can do would really be appreciated!
I think you need to present us with a lot more information about your problem.
    Precise steps to reproduce it.
Screenshots showing how you have it set up.
Copies of files that exhibit it.
That we can try to reproduce it, see if it is specific to your machine or your document, give recommendations on how you can work around or avoid it, etc.
And seperately, aside from all of those things, is getting the problem fixed. Though if it happens in CS4 and not in CS5.5, well, then it's unlikely that a fix will be forthcoming. Adobe just isn't updating CS4 any more. They're hardly updating CS5 and CS5.5, and CS6 is on the horizon.
Oh, and if you're willing to throw money at the problem, you can look at upgrading. EPUB support has changed dramatically in CS5.5 (for the better, I am told, but I don't speak from personal experience), so it's likely that any problems you saw with it under CS4 will be very very different [and hopefully gone!] in CS5.5.

  • InDesign CS4 not exporting to ePub with a TOC

I've been trying to export a file to ePub this morning but keep getting the error "Cannot export filename. Export failed" . I narrowed down the problem so that when I uncheck the "Include TOC", the file exports. The only trouble is, I need the TOC. There are no hyperlinks within the document, so that rules out that error that some people have had. I have tried redefining the style, moving it to the top of my paragraph styles panel, typing in the text by hand, creating a separate new document, creating a idml version...I even tried a test of just typing one word with a completely different paragraph style set for the TOC and still got the error. Any suggestions on things I should try? I'd rather not have to type out this TOC by hand in the code.
    Thanks a bunch!

Best suggestion is to upgrade to CS5.5. The EPUB features have been dramatically improved.

  • Need Help with Export to ePub in CS5.5

I am working on my first ePub in InDesign 5.5. When I go to File—Export for— there is no option for ePub. In fact there is only "Buzzword" and it grayed out. How do I get export for epub?

In InDesign CS 5.5, it's File > Export > EPUB.
However, if this is new for you, if you haven't prepared your file properly, it may come out like mush.
You need to prepare export order, styling of paragraph styles, character styles and object styles, you need to create a TOC style, there are many steps.
I highly recommend one of these two resources:
Anne-Marie Concepcion has a video series on Lynda.com for CS5.5:

  • EPub export of "ePub Best Practices for Pages" results in blank page

I downloaded the above-mentioned document and opened it in Pages. I deleted the first three pages, resulting in a one-page document. This page has the styles recommended for ePub. I exported as ePub. I opened the doc in Stanza. The page was blank!
I tried again, this time changing all the text to Helvetica, and saving to a new name. This time I got all the text in Stanza however, all the styles were the same as the body style.
What am I doing wrong in both cases?

  • Image navigation bar for ePub Children's book export?

I'm designing children's picture books in ID for export to ePub. I've seen some such books on my nook (ePub) that have an image navigation bar that pops up at the bottom of the page. Readers can scroll through reduced images of pages quickly on this navigation bar, tap a particular image and go directly to that page. I've looked through lots of tutorials but I don't see any that show how to do this. Can you point me to a tutorial that teaches me how to make this navigation bar?

Exploring further, I see that there are some examples on the web of experiments with JavaScript on iBooks (don't know if they're supported on the Nook).

  • How to allow non-text page into TOC and have it export to ePub?

    Hi there,
I've got an InDesign book file with several document files added as "chapters."  One of these files is the title page of the book, which is composed entirely of graphic images (i.e. there is no text on the page).
I want this page to be visible in the table of contents when exported for Kindle and/or ePub, but I can't for the life of me figure this out.
I've tried creating a layer on the title page and adding "Title Page" text to it and applying the correct TOC style.  This gets the page on the TOC, but the "Title Page" text is visible.  I've tried turning off "Print Layer" and "Show Layer" for this layer, but the text is still visible on the page when exported.
    Any ideas?
I'm beginning to think that I'm going to have to edit the TOC manually after it's exported, but I was trying to avoid this.
    Thanks,
    Kim

    Hi Wagner,
Thanks for the reply.  I've tried what you suggested in #1.  In short, I:
Created a style called Chapter Number Invisible based on my Chapter Header style, which is a TOC style.
I made one change to this by making the color "Paper."
I then added the text, "Title Page" to the title page and applied the style.
Unfortunately, I don't think that Kindle export handles white or non-colored text, and thus, I still get the text showing on the page after export.
Unless I'm doing something wrong, it looks like I'm going to have to edit the TOC manually, which is a pain.
    Thanks again,
    Kim

  • Pages 09 will not Export to ePub

I have Pages 09 version 4.1. I've written all my content and added all the pictures for each page of content for my eBook on Pages 09.
My understanding is that ePub is one of the main formats people want when they buy/read an eBook. For this reason I'd very much like to export my work on Pages to the ePub format.
When I open pages, go to file, export and click on ePub it says "Page layout documents cannot be exported to the ePub format." There are 4 other formats available: PDF, Word, RTF and Plain Text which appear to work.
Under Compatibility and sharing Apple writes " You can also save your Pages documents as RTF files or as plain text. Or export them as ePub or PDF files" apple.com/iwork/pages/
I've signed up at one of the top self publishing book and eBook services online but even their export tool isn't working with formatting my Pages 09 work to ePub.
Could anyone here share with me exactly what I need to do?
I really need to get this project finished as soon as possible.
    Sincerely,
    Dave

Hi fruhulda, Thank you for attempting to explain this to me.
When I go to the the first link you gave # 7 says "To export your Pages document as an ePub document, choose File, Export and make sure ePub is selected as the export format."
From what I read on the page, I've done what needs to be done to export to ePub.
I'v simply created my work in Pages 09, I went to pages, chose a template, wrote content, added pics numbered pages ETC, saved it to documents then I open the pages document, What I made comes up and I go to file, then export and then click epub but when I click on epub, the only option is to choose another format or cancel, the next button goes away. (the next button doesn't actually go away but it becomes non-clickable)
When you say " The message you have got tells you that you have used the Page Layout template instead of the Word Processing one you need for creating an ePub document."
I'm not sure if you're saying I've done something wrong. If so, where did I go wrong? Was I not supposed to use a template?
    Thanks again,
    Dave

  • Pages won't export to epub

I have a file.pages file which I'm trying to export to ePub format; however, when I do the export, Pages creates a blank icon on my desktop which I can't open with any application.  I've tried Author and Publisher, but no luck.  Has anyone seen this before?

The normal apps to open an .epub file would be Calibre or Adobe Digital Editions or Kitabu or Bookle or the Firefox addon Epubreader (not the stuff you mentioned).
Do any of those work for you?
On an iOS device, you would use the iBooks app.

  • Exporting for web on CS4

Can any one help? I am currently creating video using CS4 for an online world and using a compressor seperatly before uploading the video but i wondered if it was possible to export a video using CS4 straight for web use. compressed but not pixelated and a relatitvely low file size (15mb for 2-3min videos?!) i would like to speed up the process and have better looking video and not have to use the external compressor. Look forward to hearing back from anybody!

    Welcome to the forum.
Exporting for the Web is often dependent on the method of playback that the Web page's designer has used.
My first stop would be with the designer, as they can tell you what their page requires. Might be FLV for an embedded Flash player, or MOV (or variant) for an embedded QT player. That will point you in the right direction.
    Good luck,
    Hunt
