Cs4 pen tool not selecting previous line style

When I used the pen tool in CS3 I could select any line style (mostly arrows) and be able to make new line wih that same style. In CS4 it just creates a black line each time with the same thickness.

In the Appearance panel, click the flyout menu (Upper right) and uncheck New Art Has Basic Appearance.

  • Pen Tool is Selecting Entire Image

Within my image I am using the Pen tool to select an area that I want to copy. When I define the area with anchor points, close it then select Make Selection, New Selection, it puts the marching ants around not only the area I selected but also the entire image (see below).
    This suddenly started happening.
I don't want this behavior. Please help.
    Thanks,
    AJ

Check your pen tool settings. You probably accidently checked subtract front shape. What you want is exclude overlapping shapes.

  • CS4 Clone Tool NOT Multithreading and CS4 Slow on i7 965 Processor

I noticed for the first time that the new clone tool in CS4 is not using all of my processors on my new i7 965XE processor. In fact it uses only one processor and this makes it run incredibly slow. I have also noticed that CS4 in general is rather sluggish on this hardware which is supposedly one of the most powerful processors available. I am running the i7 965XE with 8GB of Ram and still find Photoshop rather slow. I would expect it to be super snappy on this hardware, perhaps I need to optimise settings somehow, does anyone have any suggestions or is CS4 not equipped to properly address the i7 processors yet???
    Any help appreciated.
My version of CS4 is 11.0

Mike, could you take a moment to reread your original post?
    "CS4 Clone Tool NOT Multithreading"
"In fact it uses only one processor and this makes it run incredibly slow."
Those are not observations and represent two direct conclusions, both of which are incorrect. The first conclusion is that the clone tool is not threaded for multiple processors (it is). The second conclusion is that the lack of threading is what makes the clone tool run slow on your system (almost certainly not the case).
Implied in your statements is a third conclusion: that using more processors makes things faster (rarely true). That is a common enough fallacy that I felt the need to offer a more detailed explanation to help you and other readers understand more about the issues involved. I tried to keep that explanation short and simple.
I gave you an alternate hypothesis (small clone area) that could have explained your observation, since you didn't provide enough details for us to rule that out.
I also gave you more information about what is going on under the hood to help you understand why you observed what you did on processor usage.
Then I pointed you to existing topics that offer a much more likely explanation for the slowdown you are seeing.
If you had described with the clone tool slowdown without the incorrect conclusions and without phrasing most of your post as accusations, you probably would have gotten useful help from other users more quickly. Even my first instinct was to ignore your post, but it sounded like you were confused, a bit angry, and needed some help.
I am sorry you read things into my post that I did not intend. I'm simply trying to help you understand what you observed, and find a solution to the problem you described.

    Larry,
I Just tried the solution you gave. It did not work. I still have 1 point vectors in a very small image. The image is a simple drawing of a map. I just want to size it to fit a smaller page size.

  • Illustrator Cs2 Pen tool not working.. Help!!

So I downloaded Ai cs2 the other day. Whenever I come to drawing polygons with the pen tool I set the fill to a colour and the stroke to none(/) just so i can produce block colour shapes without an outline. However When ive come to do it on cs2 the pen tool only lets me draw thin black lines... What am I doing wrong??

    THat's outline view.
If you turn on preview mode, you should see that shape.
But since it's not selected and the layer in the layer panel is closed, it's impossible to analyze this further.

  • Photoshop CS4 Pen Tool Visibility Problem

I recently upgraded to CS4 and started using Photoshop to do some work. Working on some clipping path with the pen tool I've come to notice how incredibly light the pen tool outline is. I cant see where or what im tracing cause I can't tell where the line is unlike the other earlier creative suites where the line was visible.
Anyone have any ideas on making this outline more visible so I can actually see what I am doing. Input would be much appreciated.

I am having the exact same problem with Photoshop CS 4 on my MacBook OSX 10.5.7 4 GB RAM    Intel GMA X3100:  graphics card
When I enable Open GL in PS CS4 preferences, the pen tool line is too light, too thin to use and the anchor points aren't accurate , I have to disable Open GL to get the normal pen function back. Adobe should get us a fix to make Open GL compatable with all graphics cards. All functions in Open GL work fine except the Pen Tool.

  • Cs4 pen tool

i use the pen tool a lot and i am used to my settings at home in cs2. at work we use cs4 and when i am drawing a path over or under another path a green x shows up and locks on to where the anchor points are on that other path. i've looked through the preferences and i cant find how to get it to quit doing this. i've just kindof ignored it for a while but this project requires really precise paths and the way it is locking my paths to what it THINKS i want to do is really slowing me down. how can i turn this feature off? thanks!

These options are in the View menu. The guide lines that appear when your mouse is aligned to certain things of the other objects is Smart Guides (Ctrl + U). But it doesn't snap just visual aid. The Snap to Grid (Shift + Ctrl + ") and  Point (Alt + Ctr + ") from the View menu is causing the snapping.

  • CS4 Pen Tool problem

I'm using CS4 on a Mac OS X 10.5.5  and I can't for the life of me figure out why when using the pen tool my a anchor points are coming out the back of the pen... literally.  So when I click and think its going where I tell it to, it comes out the back.  I'm losing my mind.. any ideas ?  Please tell me I'm an idiot and it's a simple fix
    Thanks for any help

Simple enough to work out, every time you reset the screen mode (F key) it has to redraw the entire workspace. So graphics card has ro re-render
The displacement I think, although I'm not sure, may have something to do with rulers (command R), and accomodating the ruler space. CS4 is the first time they wrote all the Open GL features, and they made some decision at the start that certain older versions of Open GL could not be fully supported for some reason. If you upgrade your graphics card you will find that this problem dissappears.

  • Delete point (audio) pen tool not working

I have for long easily used the delete point pen tool to lower or raise the decibel levels in the Timeline.
Now, I can't. I don't understand what changed. I've tried to use it on films I've already used it on.
All that happens is that the entire track gets 'selected' (turns to dark purple).
    I don't think I've changed any settings.
I have FCE 4.0.1 (not HD).
    Flummoxed.

    Trash the FCE Preferences.
This will assist with the job:

  • Pen tool not working in cs2

Can you help? I cannot get my pen tool to make an active selection. It completes the path, but then when I try to inverse selection, it says no pixels were selected. I am new to this and very frustrated. It will let me select all, but the path area remains inactive. PLEASE HELP!!!!

    > It completes the path, but then when I try to inverse selection, it says no pixels were selected
What Phos says is true, but since you say you are getting a selection I will assume you said pen but meant marquee tool or some other selection tool.
Usually you will get the no pixels selected message when you are on a layer that does not have any content. You can see content, but it is on a different layer. Change to the layer with the content in the layer palette, and then you should be able to inverse your selection.

  • Pen tool not working the same

I don't often use the Pen Tool as it is not needed but when I do, I do the same kind of thing and that is  draw around something so that I can use a filter on the selected area.
I was able to create a shape within a shape so there is a hole and then apply my filter to it. However, when I try to do the same thing it is all weird!
I create a shape and then put a shape inside, right click and choose Make Selection and the inner shape disappears leaving the larger outer shape.
Does anyone know what might be causing this and how I can rectify it. Another weird thing is that when I use a filter it applys it outside of the selection, but this is not as annoying as the original issue.
Any hwlp would be hugely appreciated!

This occurs  when you use the quick mask to create a selection. Did you?

  • CS4: Pen tool won't fill object when closed

Now i know everyone wants to tell me to fill with the paint bucket ... or make sure i have a fill color selected.  I have already tried that.  Everytime i make an object, and close it off, it doesnt fill.  And if i try to fill the object, it fills everything.  And yes, i double check to make sure i am closing the object.  After i get done drawing the shape, i can right-click with the pen tool and open the "Fill Path..." option, and tell it to fill it, and it will.  But i want it to fill in when i am done drawing each shape.  Is there anything that i can do to make this happen.  Thanks in advance for your help.

Check the options on the pen/path tools option bar.
Here's visual aid from an older version but it hasn't changed:

  • Mask button grayed out when Pen tool's selected?

    Hello...
I am going through a tutorial about how to use the Pen tool.
The tut shows that I should be able to click the Mask button in order to create a trans BG. However, mine is grayed out. I cannot find a reason why that would be. I am able to use the Layer Mask under other circumstances.
(The tut has me take an image, draw around the image to practice pulling/dragging, twisting, adding handles etc & so forth).
I have the pen tool set to Path but the Mask doesn't become available under any of the options.
The tut says to click Ctrl + Click on the path and then to click the Mask button.
Any ideas why the Mask is grayed out?
As always ~ I really appreciate your help.
    Hope you're having a great night/day

    Hello:
I would Love to post a screenshot however my computer is "shot" all my F keys & up to the Delete are non functional. I'm going to get a new laptop asa I find out what would be best to run Adobe Master Suite.
    I have Photoshop CS6 Extended.
Any way, yes, {blushing} the BG was selected. TY.
I am suppose to make a selection of the path.
I'm now completely embarrassed. Of course a trans bg can't be made when it's the bg I'm working on.
The tutors' Layer panel shows only Layer 1 and no bg. He said to download the image he uses from Diviantart but the image would only open in a browser. So, I right clicked and saved the image. Then I opened the image which, of course, just opens on the bg layer.
So, am I suppose to create a New file > New Layer and then open the image?
Sorry if my questions seem obvious to you but I am just learning and still very much a newbie.
    THANK YOU!!!

  • Pen tool not precise

I am using Illustrator CS5. When I use the pen tool to outline some photos, there are these green stuff that keep interfering. Anchors, and green straight lines and all those. It makes it hard to be precise, especially with small photos. Can I disable it?

The green stuff you see is called Smart Guides. Press Cmd/Ctrl-U to disable Smart Guides.

  • Why is my pen tool not working??

Instead of drawing shapes, my pen tool only creates a new shape layer every time I click..
    What am I doing wrong??

Yes, but that didn't seem to be what you were asking.
If you have no layer selected, using the pen tool draws a new shape layer.
If you have a layer selected, using the pen tool draws a mask (unless the layer is a shape layer, in which case it draws a new shape within the selected shape layer).
Please, read the Help sections on shape layers and using the pen tools:
