Cs4 performance
Just doing my first bit of serious phtoshopery in cs4.
WELCOME BACK TO 1996!
I have all the open GL stuff turned off. WHen I do a brish stroke and undo it takes a second or so to undo. adding a gradient to a mask in a 21mb image takes several seconds to update.
I do a brush stoke and I see the egg timer before I get a screen update.
it feels like its maybe doing that whilst it updates the layer thumbnail. Urgh. Lightrrom 2 is unbelievably slow, now my workhorse has gone the same way.
Will getting a quadro help with this or is it a fundemntal problem?
(I'm on a 2.7 ghz core2 with 4gb or ram in xp 32bit).
hmmm, well theres a ton of people using lightroom who are having the same problem.
And this computer is not exactly a load of crap. Mb is a GA 965p DS3, 800mhz ram, I've got my page file set off my boot drive (a 74gb raptor), and scratch disc set to a different drive again.
Still curious if anyone has had a crappy video card, updated and found things improved.
its possible I've got some corrupt fonts installed: I keep meaning to get round to extracting windows core fonts but its a bit of a faff. Not sure how this would impact lightroom though.

Issue: When you run two monitors under Windows XP, Photoshop responds slowly.
Solution 1: If you are using an NVIDIA display card, you might be able to work around this issue by selecting compatibility mode in the NVIDIA Advanced control panel.
Solution 2: Use one monitor.
Solution 3: Turn off Enable OpenGL Drawing.
Although its ambiguous whether its only an issue if openGl is on

After Effects CS4 Performance (BRUTAL)
Despite the comments on this board (from Adobe themselves) claiming improved After Effects CS4 performance over its predecessor, my experience is the exact opposite. This version seems half baked to me.
AE CS4 isn't just SLOW, and by slow I really mean dreadfully unusable, It's unstable as well. Even running the same template files that came with CS3 and 4, there's a huge difference in render time, ram previews etc. When you can't even rotate a simple cube without crashing, there's some real problems, and this is just the beginning. The previous version had no show stopping issues, it performed like a trooper. This latest however, I can't see how I could use it day to day for anything..
There is no other software on this machine other than, CS4, Firefox, and Lightwave 9.5, which by the way, handles textured objects with hundreds of thousands of polys, not 6. I first get an error message that reads as followed;
After effect error: crash occurred while invoking effect plug-in "Live Photoshop 3D"
followed by, After Effects can't continue: sorry, After Effects has crashed. See... blah blah blah..
By the way this occurs with or without OpenGl enabled.

I have no problem importing or animating your PSD - no crashes, at least. The resolution is very high. I got better results by cutting the resolution of your PSD in half, which may or may not be an option for you. I improved responsiveness a little by setting the PS 3D layer to "Use Photoshop Transform" in AE.
But ultimately, the responsiveness of the 3D layer in AE is impossible to work with, except with Live Update disabled. It seems like a RAM issue to me. What size are the texture layers on each side of the cube? If they're all 3000x2000-ish like your document, and you're working at full res, consider that AE has to hold all six images in RAM, plus manipulate them in 3D.
My own sense is that the whole 3D layer thing simply isn't ready for that kind of resolution in AE yet. And probably wont be until true 64bit code allows the storage of all those textures in RAM more easily.
As a side note, don't know if it's my location or your server, but your 74Mb image took me almost 2 hours to download. -
Photoshop CS4 performance issue

we use App-V for almost all of our applications and we work with a local cache mode
as far as I know - the performance of a local application and the virtual application should be the same even if the package is big. a great example is Office 2010 App-V package which works the same as a local installation
We saw that there are some applications that run very slow comparing to a local installation on the same hardware
specifically - Adobe PhotoShop CS4 is a good example. when we load a 10MB picture and try to make a simple task like mark a selection - it takes forever for the application to response!
the weirdest think is that we tried to sequence the application both in App-V 4.6 SP3 and App-V 5.0 SP2 we got the same results. we tried the default things as reset the client's cache or allowing local interaction, com objects... etc.
I really have no idea what else we can do. as I wrote, larger applications work in our environment just fine, but there are some that stuck us. another application that works slower is NIS. I'm not sure if the performance issue is always from
the same reason but I'm trying to figure out what can we do to improve it
would love to get some ideas

Since Microsoft made this claim (as stated by you), my recommendation to improve your situation still stands;
Open a ticket with Microsoft to understand the topic. My assumption would be that you could name the engineer who visited you a few years ago, and revisit the discussion you had with him and Microsoft directly.
(the statement of course goes against any independt benchmarking - such as
Project VRC,
acknowledged facts by the Community and more..)
As stated already; If you have tested all that you described, I can't offer anymore suggestions apart from the above.

Upgrade to CS5 from CS4 Performance issues
This was originally posted in the Creative Suites section. Bob Levine suggested I try a specific program forum to get better attention. It has been a present performance problem for me with Premier Pro and Photoshop so I shall try here.
I have been using CS4 for several months on a new i7 quad 64bit PC with 4 x 1TB HDs and 12GB RAM. When I use Photoshop or P.Pro, the performance is fast for several operations but slows down as I progress to a snail pace. At times, I have rebooted the PC to get up to speed again. I do not know if this is a problem with the CS4 32 bit program working on a 64 bit machine, even with Photoshop. Perhaps I am clicking too fast. If I install the source file on a separate drive to the C drive and send the output file to a third drive, performance improves as expected. Perhaps timing within/between drives and the 32 bit program may be a problem on a 64 bit PC. I have ordered an upgrade to CS5 hoping that a 64 bit program will provide better performance on the 64 bit PC. Naturally the PC performance is expected to be faster, but will the performance that slows down to a snail pace improve?Thank you all for your information.
I am beginning to imagine that because of the increased speed in dealing with data, an i7 quad 64 bit PC has a challenging time to switch and route the stream of data to the various processing and temporary/permanent storage locations. It could be that dealing with 32 bit data for the demands of video editing compounds the problem. I may have one or several slower components in the new PC. In anycase, I am hoping that dealing directly with 64 bits will improve the performance. If this does not and without further suggestions from the forum, I will have the performance of the PC components thoroughly tested for compliance to the required speed specifications. -
CS3/CS4 Performance; recommendations for LAN/Server Env ?
Id like to hear from the admins (or users for that matter) dealing with a significant amount of Adobe CS3/CS4 users, in a LAN/Server environment.
What are the specs of the machines (PC's) that run it well ?
Are you using font managers ?
Are you the users editing files located on the server ?
Im running all machines well above Adobe spec, Server 03 domain, Gbit Lan, Citrix ASA router.
The guys here are of course whining about Macs, but they also state that font manager software would help resource usage on the workstations. When the apps launch in the AM, performance is great, as the day wears on, machine performance lags, and PS or Illustrator will eat itself. Event viewer has no other details except for App Hang. Often times, while trying to save the work back out to the server; but other times just during general use.
Just wondering of there is something I could be doing to better to help these guys.
Anyone have thoughts on this ?
KeithHow about some details on those machines? CS3 and CS4 are very resource hungry and I've found the best environment is Vista 64 with at 8 gigs of RAM (or more) a fast processor and fast harddrives.
FWIW, it's not all that unusual to need to restart some of these applications after a lot of use.
I know it's a pain but it certainly cures a world of ills when things start to slow down.
BTW, that holds true on the Mac side as well.

Help Improving CS4 Performance
I'm using Premiere CS4 on a Macbook with OS X 10.6.2. I have a new project with one video track and one audio track. The audio plays fine but the video doesn't. It isn't anywhere near real-time and often only renders a frame every few seconds. Exporting a six minute video/audio project can take 1.5+ hours. I'm not sure if it is my project settings or my machine. I'd like help trying to figure out where the bottle neck is.
Here are my Macbook specs:

Ok, first off, I am new to this forum. Second, I will admit it, I did not save the URL that I am about to as for, my bad. I was on another forum and there was a URL that was shared and I looked at that was very good. It was a webinar session where the gentleman really went into details of how to build a system for CS4. It covered CPU, Memory, hard drive, scratch desk for both PC and MAC. At the end it showed an example of each as far as how to setup. It was done in a PDF version if I recall and possibly with WebEx or something similar. Does anyone have this URL for this? BTW: it is not the help files within Photoshop because he starts of saying this was a long time coming and he always has wanted to do a session like this.

XP, 4GB RAM with 3BG switch, nVidia 9600GT 512 vRAM.
CS4 keeps sucking up RAM (sometimes to 2GB), shows bad lag time, the OpenGL crashes, and my workflow comes to a stand still.
I just put that video card in as an upgrade from a 7300 LE, as the 9600GT was on the list of Adobe tested cards.
What's going on here?
Edit: also running LR 2.2.Harold - Adobe tested with the latest drivers at the time we were testing. We found bugs in the drivers, and the GPU makers promised to fix those bugs. Some were fixed before we shipped, but not all. But they are still working on some of them (and finding more) because different configuration issues were missed (multiple monitors, CPU and firmware dependencies, external utilities interferring, etc.) in their fixes or their testing. Even Adobe couldn't test all the factors involved because Adobe has no visibility into the drivers to know what factors MIGHT be involved. Adobe tried to get as broad a coverage as possible, but, well, we couldn't cover it all.
People are advised to update their drivers because many still have not done that, and because the drivers are still being updated to fix many of the bugs reported here.
People are advised to contact the video card makers because some of the bugs are still not fixed, and only the authors of the driver software know what details might be important (or missing) to figure out the cause and fix the bugs in the driver software. Adobe could report the problem to the GPU makers -- but we can't even reproduce some of these problems because we don't know all the factors involved (and thus we'd never be able to help isolate the problem, or tell if it was fixed). It is far more useful for the device driver authors to contact the customer directly and find out the exact configuration causing the problem. -

Size of RAM in Win 7 64 Bit affecting performance in CS4
Does anyone know how the size of RAM will assist CS4 performance - particularly for H264 file encoding?
I am running an i7-930 processor and 6GB of XMS3 Corsair RAM in a ASUS P6T motherboard - on Win 7 64 Bit
Would increasing RAM to a full 12GB have any significant effect - or would this be hardly noticeable?
Finally - for anyone that has upgraded to CS5 what are the practical benefits - any performance improvements noticeable?
In particular I find Encore CS4 slow.
RgdsI kinda think that sometimes with ram issues you have to consider the front side bus speed too...and the cpu speed of course..but the FSB and specs of the ram to match more or less the most you can get out of the FSB I think has a big influence on your performance.
ps...think of the FSB as a sort of pipe that you can shove stuff through just so fast...and it's linked to ALL the stuff going on between the cpu, ram, gpu ( if used ) and so on...sooo, it's sometimes the thing that determines the overall performance in terms of speed -
Can't open a thing! Why does CS4 suddenly started crashing upon starting?
Opening either the program (and I've tried it with Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign and Acrobat), or the file itself (if I'm lucky enough to have the CS4 program open fine with startup but then when I click to open a file it closes unexpectedly), just this week my computer won't let me open things. It keeps crashing. I have an iMac with 10.7.5. Crash reports gives Kern Invalid/Bad Address.
Is this something I could fix myself? Should I take my computer somewhere? (Am miles away from the nearest store and I have an iMac, not a convenient laptop)
I really can't think of why it all of a sudden started doing this - and I have people's projects to finish! Please help this frustrated designer!

Reinstalled, booted, etc.
Disabled fonts and cleared font caches.
Removed a couple design files that I thought may have been faulty.
Sometimes, I can get the program (InDesign or Photoshop) to start but when I click to open a previous file to edit it, it crashes.
Other times (especially with Illustrator), it crashes before it even gets to opening the program. (The initialization screen).

Is this setup likely to work with CS4
I am contemplating upgrading the graphics computer on which I run Adobe CS3 and Painter X (I will be upgrading to 64 bit CS4). I am doing this reluctantly but my present computer is quite old and is struggling. The system below may be overkill but it is years between my upgrades and I would like to stay ahead of the curve.
After reading all the "CS4 performance issues" posts I am a little nervous.
Should CS4 run comfortably on the system outlined below?

Just wondering if anyone has the same Laptop model as myself and is running Photoshop CS4 on it with no problems?
With so much being said about differing configurations playing a part in CS4s performance, and with laptops offering perhaps the most uniformity in terms of hardware makeup across any two units, I thought it might be illuminating if we could find two systems of the same model and specs where one (i.e mine) has serious problems with Photoshop v11 and one (somewhere among you fine folk) that does not?
Obviously manufacture batch numbers could vary but, apart from that, Im thinking any hardware variables here should be at their most minimal? We could then begin to establish (perhaps) what other than hardware it might be that sees one system working fine and the other not?
For problems experienced on my Laptop system please System Setup 4 on
this page.
Would be interested to hear from any Latitude D820 users who are not experiencing these problems.

I contacted both nVidia and Dell. Nvidia refers me to Dell as sole provider of driver.
Email reply from Dell tech support (on my asking for any news on new driver):
"I would like to bring it under your notice that I do not have sufficient update to provide you on the shortly available Drivers of new version".
I did speak with a Dell engineer who tells me: Dell can only package and release any new driver as and when updated drivers are provided by Nvidia.Well basically its not the problem with the Routers firmware. It might be due higher level of security which you have set on your Router or it might be your Intel Pro Wireless is unable to communicate with your Router. In this case you need to lower down the security on your router to WEP or WPA Persoanl . If you have already lower down the security on your Router then it might be your Intel Pro Utility which is unable to communicate with your wireless network. In this case you need to disable Intel Pro wireless utility on your Computer and use Default Windows XP configuration utility to connect to your wireless network.
Opene Intel Pro-Set wireless utility on your Computer, On the top you need to click on "Tools" tab and below you will find the Option "Use Windows to Manage WiFi" or "Use Microsoft Client" and click on Yes. So it will disable the Intel Utility.
Now in the system try Locate your "Wireless Network Connection" icon, right click on it and select "View Available Wireless Network" , locate your wireless network, input the security and click on connect. Now check if you are able to go online. -
CS4 Actions change "Show Current Layer, Toggle With Others" MIA

I have been using Photoshop for years as a hobby and professionally. My employer recently upgraded our Mac Pro Quad-Core Intel Xeon computers to Photoshop CS4. The transition has been mostly painless accept for all the changes to the keyboard shortcuts (I'll live).
Recently we have come across an issue with one of our customer's workflows that we have not been able to get by using CS4. Or customer has a workflow that we must work within in order to provide them with the artwork files in a way they can use for other processes. The main parts of this workflow involve layer structure and a set of actions that they have been using since Photoshop 7. Our customer uses Photoshop CS3.
With the transition to Photoshop CS4 in our shop, one line of their action does not function in CS4.
Show Current Layer
Toggle With Others
What needs to happen is at the end of the action all layers need to be turned visible. In CS3, in the layer palette, by Control & Clicking the eye and selecting "Show/Hide all other layers" produced the recorded action 'Show Current Layer, Toggle With Others'. The names of the layers are not recorded. This is good because the action will work on any layer no matter what the name of the layer is. In essence all layers are made visible.
In CS4 performing the same above clicks produces a recorded action 'Show , ...' The diference is that in CS4 the action is recording the name of every layer that it is showing/hiding. Simply change the name of one of your layers and running the action again produces a verbose error box.
So any thoughts on how to make visible all layers in a document using an action that will work on any layered file?
We are constructing our files in CS4 and opening them in CS3 to run the action for our customer as a work around. Or we are manually toggling the visibility, but what fun is that when it used to be automatable?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.You could try this script (CS4 only) to make all layers/groups visible. If it works for you, you could then call it as part of your action.

Need hints for Optimizing Photoshop CS4 on Leopard / Intel MacPro
Just wondering if anyone had any hints for optimizing PS CS4 performance on Intel MacPro ( I have the 2.66 Dual-core Xeon) My MacPro has the upgrade ATI 1900 video card which I think is GL enabled. From what I have read CS4 now accesses the ATI 1900's GPU memory for increased performance. Is this correct? Does anything need to be configured or does CS4 automatically detect the ATI 1900 GPU?
Any other configuration in CS4 that need to be set?
Thanks.Open Photoshop's preferences (Command+K). Click on Performance at the left. The lower right portion of the settings will say if PS detected a compatible video card. If it did, the check box for "Enable OpenGL Drawing" will already be on.

That may help you decide whether or not you want it on. Personally, I turned it off. One big reason for me is paths. I have to create a LOT of paths for client work. With OpenGL on, paths can be difficult to downright impossible to see as you draw them, depending on the color of the underlying pixels. With OpenGL off, PS uses the standard complementary contrasting colors. Much easier to use.
