[CS4] Poly.. lasso is nearly invisible

What can I do to make the poly.. lasso (or the others) more visible while working?  Once the selection is complete, of course the `marching ants' are quite visible... but today  I'm finding it very hard to keep track of where my working line is going.
I don't see any settings in the prefs that appear to handle that... but also I don't recall the darn thing being so hard to see in the past either so maybe I've nudged some setting?

I don't know of any adjustment. The cursor is supposed to contrast with  the image but for some tones it doesn't work.
I use the space bar to find a lost cursor and if it's really difficult I temporarily add a Levels adjustment layer to aid visibility.

  • Wierd Poly Lasso Tool problem

Hi, I just started using PS on Mac, and having a polygonal lasso tool  problem, when I make any selected area with the poly lasso and complete  the shape, say for instance a series of sun rays, it ends up with a bunch of boxes in the shape, that I didn't put there, I'll attach a  screen shot, any idea what is going on?

Hi, yeah, i tried that, have there been any bugs that relate to the polygonal lasso tool?
heres a post with the same problem, but no fix- this seems really silly

  • AE CS4 bounces in the dock and won't open

    Hi guys,
I already read this other post
but my problem is slightly different: I had installed a trial version of CS4 Master Collection, now I purchased the license so I uninstalled the older version and run the Cleanup Script.
Well, so after the install of the CS4 Master Collection (and also installed all the updates before opening apps), everything works fine but After Effects just bounces in the dock once and then won't open at all.
This is the message in the console:
/System/Library/Frameworks/Carbon.framework/Versions/A/Support/LaunchCFMApp[1194] Launch failed with error code - 2857 (cragCFragRsrcErr) for application /Applications/Adobe After Effects CS4/Adobe After Effects CS4.app/Contents/MacOS/After Effects
    and then
([0x0-0xb20b2].com.adobe.AfterEffects[1194]) Exited with exit code: 215
The curious thing is, if I hit command+shift+G in finder, writing
    /Applications/Adobe After Effects CS4/Adobe After Effects CS4.app/Contents/MacOS/
an invisible folder opens under the CS4 app and from there I can run an executable Unix document called After Effects that opens terminal and After Effects application without problems.
What's the explaination for that ?
Please I'm going crazy let me know what can I do to fix this!!
    Thanks in advance
    Simone

Sounds like your original dock item was linked to the previous installation. Delete it, launch AE from the applications folder, select the item int hte dock and Leave In Dock.
The item in your app folder is not a Unix.exe, it's probably just an unassigned icon. All unassignede itmes look like .exe.

  • On the right side of the br5owser there is a scroll bar, that scroll bar does not have any contrast and is almost invisible, can't find it ???

Have seen some other questions similar to mine and they may be about same issue , but they say that the scroll bar vanishes, in effect it is still there but nearly invisible. Trying to click on it without knowing the exact location however causes the page to scroll uncontrolled. The other questions advised people to reset their browser to default but that didn't help at all. Have had this same issue for about the last 6 versions of firefox, all say in the 30s versions. Tried adding high contrast in Windows as an experiment but that didn't help at all either. Been trying help for some time and just now decided to ask my own question as other questioners may have given up or answerers may think it is resolved.
In searching through help files it has led me to find a space based theme for the browser that I enjoy, but does not solve issue of course, so... all is not lost. Took a jpg of the image of the browser that shows the issue and am trying to upload it but looks like it is stuck in upload mode. Ugh "high speed" , anyhow maybe it uploaded and is not showing, the bar on the right is about 3/4 of the way down the side if you can see it, almost invisible.

Did you try Firefox Safe Mode?

  • Polygonal Lasso tool issues in newly installed Photoshop CS6 on IOS X Lion 10.7.4

I'm using a new install of Photoshop CS6 (via creative cloud) on a new iMac and getting superb performance aside from constant issues with the polygonal lasso tool.
All the other variants of the tool work fine without fault, but when using the polygonal selection , either the first 'point' won't register or subsequent 2nd or 3rd points won't register, causing photoshop to hang for a second then fill the marquee incorrectly.
I'm using a magic mouse and also tested it with a USB Logitech but still getting the same issue.
3.4ghz Intel Core i7 Quad core iMac
    16GB Ram

    Any help much appreciated ...

    same here!
very unpredictable behavior from polygonal lasso tool with apple magic mouse and fresh wacom intuos 5 large.
work on imac 27" i5 late 2013 with 32GB RAM and mac pro 2006 with 16GB RAM
    - can observe unsteady and unpredictable behavior of the polygonal lasso tool
in 10.7, 10.8 and 10.9 meaning it wont react on my click and "hang"
or suddenly fill the lasso selection as complete, when i just do a simple click.
    - can reproduce this behavior with my apple magic mouse over usb, wireless and
more frequently with my wacom intuos 4 and 5 over usb.
    - even on my latest imac 2013, newly installed only photoshop cs5 and cs6, i can reproduce much more strange behavior fo this tool ever: the first point/click won't register at all, it feels like the polygonal lasso tool hangs and waits and nothing happens. i click on another tool, click back on poly.lasso and try again. after the second attempt, after seconds of waiting, the third click always fills the selection as completed, although i am not finished with my selection at all
    any idea why?
love working with polygonal lasso, although it reacts very unstable and unpredictable since years and versions !!

  • CS4...How do you draw/paint in pure black & white?

Sorry for the dumb questions but I'm absolutely new to this stuff and I'm getting a lot of great info here which I'm keeping meticulous notes of...
I've figured out how to paint with CS4 in colors and "near" black/grey/ white (by going to the extreme left of the color square in any given color but it still seems as if if it's influenced by the "parent" color whose square I happen to be choosing from within. Is there a "pure monochrome black/grey/white range" of tones that I'm missing somewhere and, if so, what's the procedure for toggling back and forth quickly/easily between this monochrome and color?
    Thanks.

Since we don't have multiple mode images, you might consider doing your 'pen and ink' black and white image in one grayscale document and then saving that image again under a different name in rgb to do your color work. Make sure you are doing your grayscale work on a layer with transparency over a white background. That way you can save the grayscale image layer with transparency and overprint it over your color gouache work as a separate file, black over color, so to speak. Use your black layer in your rgb image as a guide then turn it off to save your color work to print separately.
Actually, you may get just as good a result with less fuss by following the "0,0,0 is pure black; 255,255,255 is pure white" rule for your b&w illustration layer and do your colors on other layers.
I don't have experience with 'Painter' but you might want to check into that program if you want another take on using watercolor or other illustration styles in your document.
Post a link to your work here. We want to see the results of our recommendations please.
    Thanks,
    Ken

  • Invisible Shield, iDiddy, or Martin Fields

    Hi all,
Do any of you have any preference for shields for the iPod? Looking for something easy to put on that won't leave any residue if removed.
    Thanks,
    Ed

    Hi Ed,
I was kind of skeptical about putting on the invisible shield, but after reading others advice, I SLOWLY with much patience applied the invisible shield on my black 5g ipod.
I put it on immediately after removing the factory plastic protection, so my hands never touched the ipod itself.
It is very tough, and I have no fear of any damage to it without a case. There is a very slight texture to it, but it is nearly invisible. Also, the screen is not affected at all by it. It also adds a bit of a 'grip' to it so it doesnt really slide around if I leave it on slick surfaces.
I put mine on perfectly the first try, but I wonder how removal will be if necessary. (lifetime replacement is nice)
I think the key for this product is 'slow & deliberate'.
Sorry for rambling, hope this helps.

  • Problem with Pen Tool CS5

    Hi,
I just got Photoshop CS5 and I'm having a bit of trouble with the pen tool - namely, I can't see the path I'm creating.  In CS3 I could clearly see the line between two points but in the new program the line is nearly invisible making it very difficult to create the path.  Is this a setting I can fix?
    thanks

I was having 32 bit while I upgraded from CS3 to  CS4. The only problem with CS4 that time was with pen tool.Though I cannot precisely recall , I can say it t was very lazy and very frustrating and this was resolved totally after shifting to 64 bit.--If urs existing system is 32 bit try with 64 bit

  • Rendering problem in output of Pages 5.1

Has anyone else seen a print rendering problem when trying to print a table in Pages 5.1?
All my text in tables is jagged and lower-resolution than other text:
(Printed from Pages 5.1 (1769) on a HP Color LaserJet CP2025 from a retina MacBook Pro original model running Mavericks 10.9.1.)
To see the problem, you must look at the full size image. Right-click to open it in a new tab.
The type is set to Helvetica 12 pt black.
The borders are set to 0.5 pt black. The top two lines have a border on all sides.
The top line's border is nearly invisible; on the full size image you should see a faint blueish line.
The middle line's box box is supposed to be
a full box, but it is missing two sides. But at least this hairline renders properly.
The pdf of the same file looks fine on screen, even at high magnification. The problem only shows up in print.
The same problem exists in Numbers (where I first experienced it):
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/24695801#24695801

I see you followed Jerry's advice to post over here, and haven't got any responces, so I'll at least try to get a little more information into the discussion.
Since the document prints to pdf correctly, but not to the actual printer, it seems likely that it is a print driver issue. In the Numbers discussion on the issue, the original person with the issue was using a HP printer with a postscript driver. Since the HP support site was not very clear about whether a driver for that printer on Mavericks even existed, and the recommendation for a generic driver was for a PCL driver, not postscript, I suspect that they were not using a recommended configuration. It would probably be helpful to know the details about your printer and print driver.
Do you have access to more than one printer to test this on?
The new versions of Numbers and Pages are doing something strange in terms of how they copy tables to the system clipboard; the pdf version is no longer available, only bitmap images. Print to pdf, however seems to still get the pdf data. I don't think this should have anything to do with the data getting to the print driver, but it does seem consistent with your results.

  • "smudges" on display

I need some quick help here.
I just got a 15" G4 iMac (800MHz). Got it off of eBay. The seller said the machine had been in storage for about 4 months. He turned it on last week to take pictures for the auction. I received the machine today. It was not packaged very well. When I turned on the machine, I notices 4 areas on the display with very dark "smudges". Similar to if you ever pushed on an LCD screen, except these did to disappear quickly. I have had the machine running for about 6 hours now. I'm not sure if it's my imagination, but the "smudges" seem to be getting lighter in color.
I have contacted the seller telling him there's a problem with the machine. He claims that Apple Tech Support told him that these "smudges" were probably the result of the display being compressed during shipping, and that over time the display should return to normal.
Has anyone heard of this before?
    Does that sound plausible?
If I'm going to ask this seller to let me return the machine, I should do it soon. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

It's a real shame, but it sounds like the seller's failure to package the iMac correctly has damaged the screen. Gentle pressure on my LCD here fades in less than a second and where I get screen-burn from bright colours on the Dell LCDs at work these patterns fades in a couple of hours. I guess only you can decide if it's bad enough to return the machine but sleep on it (not literally!) and then make your decision tomorrow.
I had my iMac G4 20" poorly packaged from eBay too. It's bearly noticeable, and I can only see it when a light colour covers most of the whole screen, but I do have a Nike-tick shaped patch. It's not noticeably reduced or improved over the last 16 months. As it's near invisible when actually using the machine I'm not bothered.
    regards

  • Confused about Color Management in CS5 (Photos appearing differently in all other programs)

I recently noticed this and it's been driving me crazy; when I view photos in Photoshop CS5 they appear significantly lighter/more washed out than when viewed in other programs like Zoombrowser, Digital Photo Professional or just in a regular Windows folder using Filmstrip mode (Windows XP).  When opening the same photo in both CS5 and Zoombrowser and switching back and forth between the two windows the difference is very apparent...for example, one of the photos I compared was of a person in a black shirt -- in CS5 (lighter/washed out) the folds in the shirt were very obvious, but in Zoombrowser (darker, more contrast/saturation) the folds were nearly invisible and it looked like just solid black.  Now, after messing around with the settings in both Photoshop and in Zoombrowser I've found a few ways to get the photos to look the same in the two programs; one way gives them both the lighter/more washed out appearance and another way gives them both the darker appearance with more contrast and saturation.  My problem is that I'm not sure which view is accurate.
I use a NEC MultiSync LCD1990SXi monitor with SpectraView II calibration software and calibrate it every 2 weeks using these calibration settings (screenshot): http://img52.imageshack.us/img52/8826/settingsx.jpg
In the SpectraView II Software under Preferences there's an option that says "Set as Windows Color Management System Monitor Profile - Automatically selects and associates the generated ICC monitor profile with the Color Management System (CMS)."  This option is checked.  Also, when I open the Windows' Color Management window there's only one option displayed, which is "LCD1990SXi #######" (the ####### represents my monitor's serial number).
I assume the above settings are all correct so far, but I'm not sure about the rest.
Here are my current default Color Settings in CS5 (screenshot): http://img97.imageshack.us/img97/666/photoshopcolorsettings.jpg
Changing these settings around doesn't seem to make the photo appear much different.  However, when I go to Edit -> Assign Profile, then click off of "Working RGB: sRGB IEC61966-2.1" and instead click Profile and select "LCD1990SXi ####### 2011-06-21 18-30 D65 2.20" from the drop-down menu, the picture becomes darker with more contrast and saturation and matches the picture in Zoombrowser.  Also, if I select "Adobe RGB (1998)" from the drop-down menu it's very similar in terms of increased darkness and contrast but the saturation is higher than with the LCD1990SXi setting.  Another way I've found to make the image equally dark with increased contrast and saturation is to go to View -> Proof Setup -> Custom and then click the drop-down menu next to "Device to Simulate" and select "LCD1990SXi ####### 2011-06-21 18-30 D65 2.20" again.
Alternatively, to make both images equally light and washed out I can go to Zoombrowser -> Tools -> Preferences and check the box next to "Color Management: Adjust colors of images using monitor profile."  This makes the image in Zoombrowser appear just like it does in CS5 by default.
Like I said, I'm confused as to which setting is the accurate one (I'm new to Color Management in general so I apologize for my ignorance on the subject).
It would seem that assigning the LCD1990SXi profile in CS5 would be the correct choice in order to match the monitor calibration given the name of the profile but the "Adjust colors of images using monitor profile" option in Zoombrowser sounds like it would do the same thing as well.  Also, I've read that Photoshop is a color managed software whereas Zoombrowser and Windows Picture and Fax Viewer are not which makes me think that maybe the lighter/washed out version seen in Photoshop is correct.  So which version (light or dark) is the accurate one that I should use to view and edit my photos?  Thanks in advance for any help or info.

    Sorry for the late reply;
But before we go there or make any assumptions, it's important for
you to determine whether you're seeing consistent color in your
color-managed applications and only inconsistent color in those that are
not color-managed.  For that you'll need to do a little research to see
if the applications in which you're seeing darker colors have
color-management capability (and whether it is enabled).
I opened the same picture in 7 different applications and found that the 6 of the 7 displayed the photo equally dark with equally high contrast when compared to the 7th application (CS5).  The other 6 applications were Zoombrowser EX, Digital Photo Professional, Windows Picture and Fax Viewer, Quicktime PictureViewer, Microsoft Office Picture Manager and Firefox.
However, at least two of these programs offer color management preferences and, when used, display the photo (from what I can tell) exactly the same as Photoshop CS5's default settings.  The two programs are two Canon programs: Zoombrowser EX and Digital Photo Professional.  Here's the setting that needs to be selected in Zoombrowser in order to match up with CS5 (circled in red):
And here's the setting in Digital Photo Professional that needs to be selected in order to match up with CS5 (again, circled in red):
*Note: When the option above "Monitor Profile" is selected ("Use the OS settings") the image is displayed exactly the same as when the monitor profile is selected.  It's only when sRGB is selected that it goes back to the default darker, more contrasty version.
So with the red-circled options selected, all three programs (CS5, ZB, DPP) display the images the same way; lighter and more washed out.  What I'm still having trouble understanding is if that ligher, more washed out display is the accurate one or not...I've read several tutorials for all three programs which only make things more confusing.  One of the tutorials says to always use sRGB if you want accurate results and *never* to use Monitor Profile and another says that, if you're using a calibrated monitor, you should always select Monitor Profile under the color management settings...so I'm still lost, unfortunately.
What I also don't understand is why, when the monitor profile is selected in CS5, the image is displayed in the dark and contrasty way that the other programs display it as by default but when the monitor profile is selected in Digitial Photo Professional it displays it in the lighter, more washed out way that CS5 displays it using CS5's default settings (sRGB).  Why would selecting the monitor profile in DPP display the photo the same way as when sRGB is selected in Photoshop?  And vice versa...why would selecting the monitor profile in Photoshop display the photo the same way as when sRGB is selected in DPP?
I feel like I'm missing something obvious here...which I probably am.  Again, I'm very new to this stuff so pardon my ignorance on the topic.
By the way, I find that the way that the non-color managed programs (Windows Picture and Fax Viewer et al.) display the photos is more aesthetically pleasing to the eye than the duller, more washed out display that CS5 gives the photos, but ultimately what I want to see in these programs (especially PS5 where I'll be doing the editing) is the accurate representation of the actual photo itself...i.e. what it's supposed to look like and not a darker (or lighter) variant of it.
So just to reiterate my questions:
Why does selecting Monitor Profile under the color management settings in DPP give the same display results as the default sRGB profile in CS5 and vice versa?  (CS5 with monitor profile selected having the same display results as DPP with the sRGB profile selected)
When using CS5 with it's default color management settings (sRGB), using DPP with the Monitor Profile selected, and using Zoombrowser EX with "Adjust color of images using monitor profile" selected this results in all three programs displaying the same lighter, washed-out images...is this lighter, more washed-out display of the images shown in these three programs the accurate one?
I noticed when opening an image in Firefox it had the same darker, contrasty look as the other non-color managed applications had.  Assuming that the CS5 default settings are accurate, does this mean that if I edit a photo in CS5, save it, and upload it to the internet that other people who are viewing that image online will see it differently than how it's supposed to look (i.e. in a non-color-managed way?)  If so, this would seem to indicate that they'd see a less-than-flattering version of the photo since if their browser naturally displays images as darker and more contrasty and I added more darkness and contrast to the image in CS5, they'd be seeing a version of the photo that's far too dark and probably wouldn't look very good.  Is this something I have to worry about as well?
I apologize for the lengthy post; I do tend to be a bit OCD about these things...it's a habit I picked up once I realized I'd been improperly editing photos on an  incorrectly calibrated monitor for years and all that time and effort had been spent editing photos in a certain way that looked good on my incorrectly calibrated monitor but looked like crap on everyone else's screen, so the length and detail of this post comes from a desire to not repeat similar mistakes by editing photos the wrong way all over again.  Again, thanks in advance for all the help, it's greatly appreciated!

thanks in advance for your help

Actually, this is probably going to be a bit more efficient on large scale data. (I'm guessing, if it matters then test...)
    SELECT DISTINCT HoldingsID FROM
      SELECT HoldingsID
      FROM tblHoldings
      WHERE tblHoldings.Title LIKE '%key%'
           OR tblHoldings.Contents LIKE '%key%'
    UNION ALL
      SELECT HoldingsID
      FROM tblHoldingsAuthorName
      WHERE tblHoldingsAuthorName.AuthorName LIKE '%key%'
    UNION ALL
      SELECT HoldingsID
      FROM tblHoldingsSubject
      WHERE tblHoldingsSubject.SubjectHeadings LIKE  '%key%'
    UNION ALL
      SELECT HoldingsID
      FROM tblHoldingsPublisherName
      WHERE tblHoldingsPublisherName.PublicationDate = 'key'
ORDER BY HoldingsIDThe diffence is when the sort(s) to create distinct rows is done. In the first version, UNION must produce only distinct values, so three sorts must be performed, one to create each UNION intermediate result. In the 2nd version, UNION ALL doesn't produce
distinct values, we delay the sorting until the last minute and sort all candidates once, instead of one sub-set once, one sub-set twice and two sub-sets 3 times. If this is a school project, the difference probably doesn't matter.
By the way, many databases implement the DISTINCT keyword in such a way that it creates sorted result sets, sorted by the resulting column values. As far as I know, this is not guaranteed by the SQL standard, so the additional ORDER BY clause is still needed for rigourous portability to databases that don't work that way. If that's not a concern and speed is, in many situations you can drop the ORDER BY; however for small result sets the difference is nearly invisible, and even for moderately large result sets, sorting an already sorted result set is usually an Order(n) in-memory operation. For really big results, the database will be swapping results to disk as it sorts and this sort of optimization matters then. This also applies to the use of GROUP BY.
