CS4 Premiere Pro General file format & preview problems

I was redirected here after posting my complaint on Twitter, so please excuse my forum manner.
I've been using Adobe Premiere Pro (CS4) for about a year now, and I've been editing videos along with other packages with no problem. (Only problem being my slow processor). Up until last week Premiere Pro has been completely fine. But seeing I have a project deadline next month, I thought I would spend a day trying to kick-start the video editing.
My source videos were originally photograph-frames animated in Flash CS4 into .MOV, decided to use the H.264 output codec. As I have finished exporting my needed videos, I imported them into Premiere Pro as usual, as I have in the past. But then I encountered the common problem that I have seen quite a few have also encountered with .MOV, or jsut general "no-preview" problem when the source video is fine.
I then took a day to research online about Premiere Pro's compatability with .MOV, among other container and formats. Upon using softwares such as MediaInfo and GSpot, I found that there might have been a problem with missing Codecs within my Adobe package. I then tried to convert the .MOV into .MPG (mpeg2), hoping such standard codec would work with Premiere Pro as they they in the past. No result avail.
I then turned to the uninstall route (retaining user info) and re-installing. The problem has NOT been fixed, what's more is that it crashes almost instantly after I try rendering the workplace. (Even post-rendering does not show the preview, but the files in the Adobe folder, does). Here's a screencap to my latest workplace, if it helps:

Before the re-install, I believe I was running Premiere Pro CS4's latest update (4.2.x) something, now it is back to 4.0.0. But I don't think that is where the main problem is? I recently changed my locale from a certain language to Japanese to run a certain program. Would that be causing the problem(s)?
Does anyone know a way that I can FIX this? Any help is appreciated and I thank you all in advance.
I am using a Sony Vaio NS series laptop,
a 2.0 GHz Intel Pentium Dual Core processor
3GB RAM,
intergrated graphics Intel Chipset Family Series 4( I think).
Windows Vista Home Premium 32bit.
I tried moving the Scratch disks from an external portable hard drive to the local hard drive, to no result.
Again, any help is appreciated. I would appreciate direct advice rather than links. Thanks again.
Neo.

I have updated my CS4, Ppro to 4.2.1. The problem still remains. Would it have anything to do with my project setting? I don't have much knowledge to setting one up. The difference between the AVC projects and etc?
EDIT : I took the problem to my lecturer, and he didn't do anything out of the ordinary, but his "magic touch" click on the preview panel (Main composition) has made the video show up! But even after render, it won't play. But scrubbing along frames is now fixed. Any idea what's causing the no-preview-playback?

• Capture problem with trial SW (CS4 Premiere Pro / Canon DM-MV1E,OPTURA in USA)

Hi,
I have used this camera earlier with older premiere 6.5 with Canopus DVRaptor-RT firewire. Those files I can not use with CS4 Premiere because Canopus is using their own codec?
Now I try with CS4 Premiere Pro with motherboard firewire (Asus P5AD2-E Premium).
Timeline is running in capture window during capture but there is no video and no audio (and no file....). During capture "Capture duration" is 0. When I stop capture there is text "Recorder captures no frames".
Device control works ok (atleast Rew, Play, Stop, FF).
Yes I know my camera is old...... Is it so that this camera don't work anymore with this SW?

I am having a similar issue with trial ver. PPR CS4  but with a Panasonic AG DV2000.
Where did you find the MV1 setting or was that something to do with your cannon settings?
I have  the trial ver. loaded on a windows 7 64 box.
I get message to reset my VTR.
No video in capture window.
I currently use the same VTR with Premiere 6 with no issue.
Any ideas ?

• I can edit on Premiere Pro 6 files, but after a dozen keystrokes, the space bar and cursor keys stop working while the save function works

I can edit on Premiere Pro 6 files, but after a dozen keystrokes, the space bar and cursor keys stop working while the save function, render workspace function, export file are still operational. How can I fix it so I may complete my assignment?
Besides DaVinci Resolve, Adobe Creative Suite 6 is the only software on the machine. I am using Windows 7 Professional 64-bit Operating System on AMD FX 6100 six-Core Processor at 3.31gHz and 32 GB RAM memory. There are two SLI-bridged GTX680 NVidia cards.
The software was very stable for the last six months, working with 720P proxy files from 2.5K masters (Blackmagic Design Camera). I am working on a feature-length project that exceeds 1000 edits. I have broken the file into 2 one hour segments.
I have deactivated the software before reinstalling the entire OS from scratch. PP6 was very stable for 48 hours. Then the freezing space bar returns. After a dozen strokes into the project, same problem.  I have made cache files store next to originals, I have deleted preview files if they were corrupted and causing instability. Am I missing something?
I have Microsoft Security Essentials for virus protection. I double checked the memory for damage/defect. Nothing says that the motherboard or other components are damaged.
I am in film competition overseas and need to have deliverables in less than a month's time.  I lost the last two weeks troubleshooting and this crisis came at an inopportune moment of the project.
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Still getting software freezes but found a way to mitigate for the mean time.
Upon launching Adobe Premiere Pro, hit CTRL-ALT-DEL to launch TaskManager as well.
You will want to highlight Adobe QT32 Server.exe
Right click and select "End Process Tree"
You will get considerable stability in the program, long enough to get timing of cuts done. Be sure to save often.
If the program freezes, do not hit Save. You definitely want to avoid saving the corruption into your TimeLine
CTRL-ALT-DEL to relaunch the TaskManager and highlight Adobe Premiere Pro.exe
Right-click to "End Process"
No need to reboot the whole system; just launch Premiere Pro again and continue with the session. Note that your work reverted to Last Save.
Hope this helps until the bug is fixed.

• RE: CS4 Premiere Pro - what is best to backup/archive video to minimize size

RE: CS4 Premiere Pro -> what is best to backup/archive video to minimize size?
I use export>media to adobe media encoder. I am using the avi. the avi file generated seems large. i.e. for 27 minutes the file is 6 gb.
what is the best format to use to minimize file size?????
any help will be appreciated and thks in advance.

>what is best to backup/archive video to minimize size?
That's the wrong question to ask. Ideally you don't change anything about the original media for backup. It's size it it's size, and you get enough of whatever you nee to accommodate that.

• Premiere Pro "3 frame" render preview glitch

When I create a render preview in Premiere Pro, sometimes the render preview renders the same frame for three consecutive frames. In other words, after the render preview is complete, the render preview creates three consecutive frames that are the same, and then moves on to the fourth frame. It looks like a jump cut where there is none. this costs me a lot of time, since to fix it I have to unrender and then rerender my render preview.
How can I avoid this problem?

Hey Ann, I know that deleting the render files and rerendering will work. But this costs me a lot of time.
Is there a way to avoid this glitch in the first place?
It happens quite often. Am I doing something to cause this glitch?

• CS4 Premiere Pro Monitor Window, Again

I posted several days ago about the problems I'm having with displaying video in Encore and Premiere Pro in CS4.  This is incrediblyl frustrating because my older versions of these products always worked fine, and still do.
I've come across an insight:
AVI files that were created by using "export movie" in my older version of Premiere Pro give me a variety of problems when trying to display them in the monitor window of the CS4 version of Premiere Pro.   For example, the monitor window might be teal when I first move a clip to a sequnce.  Then I click on the mintor window with my mouse and the teal is replaced by the correct image from the clip.  But then I click the "play" icon below the monitor window and it becomes mostly teal, but with a few hash marks just to the right of center.  At other times, the display has been different.
AVI files that were created by using the codec of Microsoft Video 1 seem to display fine in the CS4 version of Premiere Pro.  I approached this two different ways.  In one example, I took a clip that displayed fine in my older version of Premiere but looked like a mess in the CS4 version, and I used VirtualDub to created a converted version of it using the codec Microsoft Video 1.  PPro CS4 was able to import and display the version created within VirtualDub with the Microsoft Video 1 codec perfectly.  Then I took another clip that had display problems in Premiere Pro CS4, and used the "export" feature within Premiere Pro CS4 to export it to AVI, using the Microsoft Video 1 codec. I then imported that output file into Premier Pro CS4, and that too displayed perfectly within Premiere Pro.
My system config:
CS4 version of Premiere Pro, fully registered.  This was an "upgrade" version, installed on a machine that had an older version of CS4
Windows XP Professional with Service Pack 3 as operating system
Sony Vaio laptop with Intel Core 2 Duo CPU
2.93 gig of RAM
I tried going to Sony's web site in search of updated display drivers, but that section of the site appears to not be working.  I also tried going through the control panel's device driver dialogue and clicking "update driver" and that didn't work either.  So I'm stuck with the driver versions that I currently have.
But I wonder, are my device drivers really the problem?  I'm skeptical, because of the fact that AVI files created using the Microsoft Video 1 codec don't have the problem.
So how can I get the CS4 version of Premiere Pro to properly display AVI files created by my older version of Premiere Pro?  I really don't want to do a labor-intensive effort of converting all my clips in all my projects to Microsoft Video 1 just to work around the poor quality assurance that appears to have been done by Premiere Pro CS4's development team.

In Premiere Pro CS4, if I pick the dialogue for File > Export > Media, it takes me to an "Export Settings" window which contains an option to select which codec to use.  On my computer, there are 13 choices, including Cinepak Codec by Radius, DV (24p Advanced), DV NTSC, DV PAL, Indeo Video 5.10, Intel Indeo(R) Video R3.2, Intel Indeo Video 4.5, Intel IYUV Codec, Microsoft RLE, Microsoft Video 1, Microsoft Windows Media Video 9, Uncompressed UYVY 422 8-bit, and V210 10-bit YUV.
I don't know which codec my older version of Premiere Pro uses to generate AVI files when I use its "Export Movie" option.  I just know that whatever it does, ends up displaying horribly in the CS4 version opf Premiere Pro.  However, using either VirtualDub or Premiere Pro CS4 to rewrite the AVI file using the Microsoft Video 1 codec results in an AVI file that the CS4 version of Premiere Pro can play back without problem.
The distortion in the monitor window is different from one clip to the next.  I'll post a few examples.  In all cases, the AVI's were generated by the older version of Premiere Pro, using the "Export Movie" option.
Example Number 1
While playback is occurring (note that this one shows up as salmon-colored, which is another thing that has happened on a number of my attempts with other clips as well):
However, if I click on the square icon to make playback stop, the colors in the monitor window display properly when it stops.  In this example, the clip is black and white, and here's how it looks (ie, the correct colors) after I have clicked on stop.
I'll post another message showing examples from another clip.

• CS4 Premiere Pro No-Response in 64-bit Win7PC, i7 CPU, 16G Memory .... frustrated :)

CS4 Premiere Pro hang in a new 64-bit Win7 PC, i7 CPU, 16G Memory .... frustrated
(video no response, but audio is on)
I have no idea what the root cause is:
1. Win 7 vs. XP issue; OR
2. 32-bit vs. 64-bit; OR
3. CS4 needs to be upgraded to CS6?
Need your help, how to fix it?
Really Appreaciate!

Dear Ann:
Thank you for your reply!
It seems no others know this, I guess your assumption is correct;
I tested my previous project, they run well.
If it is clips problem, how can I fix it?
I downloaded your suggested Media Info, but don't know how it can work yet.

• Windows Vista 32-bit to Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit for running CS4 Premiere Pro

Greetings, I need some advice on whether to upgrade my computer or not!  I am currently running CS4 Premiere Pro (ver 4.2.1) with HD 1080 footage. My computer is a HP d4999z Image maker (Pavillon) using Vista 32-bit OS. It has an AMD 9600 Quad-core processor 2.3 GHz (ADM phenom 64 Nvidia), Ram is 4 GB, Windows Vista Home Prem (service pak2), a Nvidia GEForce 8800GT, creative SB-x-Fi, 3 internal HD and 2 external HD.
I use PremPro CS4 for video editing of my HD footage. I am a serious amateur, and not a professional. HP says that I can upgrade to Windows 7 Ultimate on my current computer and go from 4 GB ram to 8 GB, but 8GB is the max. So my question is... will an upgrade like this (Wind 7/64 and more RAM), give me  significantly faster or better processing? And is Windows 7/64 Ultimate a more stable platform on which to run CS4?
Eventually, I will go to CS5; but not on this computer.  Probably late next year for the new computer.
         Thanks for any advice.  Jean

Jean,
I think that you will find Win7-64 with an increase in RAM will offer a bit more stability and performance gain, though only a 64-bit program will get you a real increase. Whether the "bang for the buck" is enough to justify the move, is another matter. Harm and Bill G. can probably quantify that increase in performance for you, to help with the decision.
One caveat that I might offer would be the 64-bit drivers currently available. Word on the street indicates that that situation will likely improve with Win7-64 SP1. As you will be using CS4, you should not have the issue with Effects, CODEC's, etc., being 32-bit, even if you have a 64-bit OS.
Good luck, and expect a couple of folk to have some real-world numbers for you, to help you make the final decision.

• Premiere Pro CS6 File Capture Problem

Hi all, I don't have this problem in Premiere Pro CS5, but CS6 won't capture HD video from my camera (mini DV 1080i Hdv).  The error is 'Can't Activate Recorder.'  Anyone have a solution?

I have got the same problem on my Canon XH A1. Video capture used to be no problem. Now it just crashes the program. It is useless. I have had to capture in Final Cut Pro and then output in a format that I can use in Premier projects. I see I'm not alone either. So this either gets fixed or I change programs. Nope, not going to CC just to see if this works either.

• Premiere Pro MXF files problem

When I first imported in to Premiere Pro (CC7.2.1) all of my MXF files from a Sony F55 all worked perfectly. Immediately I could preview the files in the source window and use the metalogging to skim through them. Additionally I could create and export sequences and preview them in realtime at 1/2 resolution - preview was quick and fluid.
Two weeks later and i'm struggling to get any sort of preview on the same premiere projects. I open a project, and if I try to preview a clip in the source window I sometimes get frame one and audio, but never any sort of playback. If I try to preview a sequence I just get media pending, a black screen or audio only.
I haven't moved any clips from their original folder and it isn't complaining it can't find them. It never seems to render them no matter how long I leave it.
Interestingly, If I use the direct link to speedgrade then they play instantly in speedgrade
I'm using a MBPR with CUDA Mercury.
When I open another project with AVCHD files all seems to work ok, but any of the several projects I have with these MXF raw files fail to preview anything.
Any help grately appreciated.

• Adobe Premiere Pro crashes on video preview

Hello,
I was recently working on a project and had Premiere Pro opened, then I had to update my video card drivers, because I had all sort of visual glitches in my games, occasionally when watching movies and the drivers were completely crashing every now and then. At some point during the update my screen went all azure-colored and my computer was completely non-responsive, so I had to restart it, after some waiting. After which the drivers appear to have been installed correctly but when I tried to start Premiere it crashed after loading my project. After a reinstall the same thing kept on occurring, it turned out premiere can start by itself with no problems and even import video files, but the moment I put the video file on the preview window, either by dragging it or by putting it in the timeline, Premiere crashes.
My stupid video card is "SAPPHIRE VAPOR-X R9 270X 2G G5", like I said I updated the drivers, because it was causing problems, it is still uncertain if the update fixed those issues, but now I have a problem with Premiere, which was working fine before that.
I also cleared the media caches, no effect. The crash occurs with any video file, not just with my last project.
Any ideas?

Will do, however in the meantime I found out Premiere works fine if in a new project I set the rendering to be only software, without the GPU, also in all cases audio import, preview and playback are unaffected.
I was sort of hoping I could play games AND rend video, what are the chances of that?
