Cs4 project loaded as desktop mode in cs5

Hello:
Just made the full upgrade yesterday from cs4 to cs5 on windows 7 from vista using the matrox with max.  Loving the HD editing.  I also tried to open an SD cs4 project in cs5.  While opening, and after the message that tells you it is converting to cs5, I got this message - 'The editing mode used by this sequence could not be loaded.  The sequence will be opened in desktop mode.' So the project opened, I created a new sequence with the matox settings and cut and pasted the original sequence into it.  Any area that had to be rendered went pixelized.  The only way I could get rid of this was to remove all colour correction, effects and transitions.  When I reintroduced them, I ended up with the same result.  I have found a work around, and that is opening a new project and importing the old cs4 project into it rather than just trying to open the cs4 project with cs5.  Rather than using matrox settings, I just rerendered the sequence and it works fine, however, I don't have my program monitor which is controled through matrox.  This will be the last of two SD projects, but wondered if anyone else had this issue.
Thanks, Christine

Yes, the Export function is the best that you will be able to do. There is usually forward compatibility between versions' Projects (though with a few pitfalls and failures), but there has never been backward compatibility. Closest that I have ever seen was some CS3 Encore Projects would Open in EncoreDVD 2.0, but that does not help you.
Good luck,
Hunt

  • Project stuck in Desktop mode(?) ?

Opened a current project and a box appeared stating "cannot open in edit mode, opening in desktop mode". I cannot export from this mode, how do i get back to edit mode?

Desktop mode is simply a customization of the sequence settings.  Functionally it's no different than using a preset.
    So...why can't you export?

  • CS4 projects in CS5 with Matrox

After one week of testing, I thought I could conclude that CS5 PP & AE were giving me a workable new production system.
I have got 12 Terabyte of CS4 projects I need to use.
Many of these projects now only work for 90%, but I could repair them a bit so CS5 would not crash etc.etc.
PP showed which Matrox plugin used to be at which spot and that it just wasn't working anymore.
Playback was possible and PP reacted on scrubbing and interface changes.
It was obvious the projects were a bit mutulated, but I could see what they used to be.
I also bought and installed Boris Continuum to compensate for the lost Matrox effects.
    But now something terrible happened.
I opened an older PP project I was working on, but now the brand new PC has turned into the familiar nightmare mode again.
PP tells me the Matrox effects are missing. Not so very nice, but as I said, I can fix that somewhat.
However, somehow PP now has become horribly sluggish with CS4 projects.
PP does not react on mouseclicks like it should.
    The output image hardly updates.
I MUST remove the non-working plugin references, in stead of just disabeling them in the effect tab.
I can not see, which plugin was on those exact spots, it just says Unknown so I need my old computer to figure out how to repair things.
The old PC reference is not an option, as my boss wants me to throw it out.
I find myself in deep trouble.
I convinced my boss, not to buy an Avid, as we have 12 Terabyte of very precious CS4 projects.
I told him I could use Boris to emulate the lost Matrox effects.
Now I have this CS5 set, which does not even allow me to reconstruct CS4 projects.
I just don't know where to look for support anymore; Adobe will point to Matrox and Boris, and they will point in the same circular way.
Is there anyone who could say something constructive, in stead of "please report this as a bug"?

I am in the fortunate position of never using the multitude of "special" effects with which the older versions of Matrox cluttered the Premiere installation.  As a result, for me, the transition to CS5 using the Matrox beta drivers for my RTX2 has been no problem.  I simply opened the couple of projects that I wished to work on in CS5 and went ahead.  I deliberaterly waited until my "live" projects were at a minimum level before upgrading.
The new system is so fast and flexible, even with a three year old system and a GTS 250 graphics card, that I do not miss the Matrox acceleration in hardware at all.  The few effects that I did use that are no longer available, e.g. Matrox Move and Scale, are now real-time with the Adobe version on my relatively feeble system.
Clearly, where a project uses Matrox effects which are no longer available, these will have to be removed and replaced, and it is probable that they will slow things down in the meantime.  Once they are removed, there should be no more problem.
This is by no means the first thread I have seen relating this kind of problem.  I wonder how the upgrade to CS5 was carried out?  I always keep an image of the basic Windows set-up, immediately before I install Premiere, and always start from that.  This ensures a clean start with no Matrox of Adobe debris around to cause any problems.  I always install Premiere and the rest of my Adobe software, before the rest of the office software.
If Harm Millaard does pollute this thread with his customary abuse, my advice is to ignore him, and hope he goes away.

  • CS5 not opening CS4 project

This is the message that I get when I try to open a project created in PPro CS4 in CS5.
"This project contained a sequence that could not be opened.  No sequence preview present file or codec could be associated wiht this sequence type."
It shows all of the media loading at the bottom and confoming of files but then send me back to the welcome screen after I close the message.
Any suggestions on why CS5 is not playing nice with my CS4 projects?

Sounds logical but I completely turned off the firewall, restarted the computer, and still no luck.
By the way, as a preemptive strike against the posts that will ask me about being an old computer or having a ton of weird codecs - the computer was just built, everything is very clean and CS4 runs like a charm.
    Any other suggestions?

  • Desktop Mode (Premier Pro CS5)

I recently had a project that was nearly done and the first time I installed Adobe Premier Pro CS5, everything worked perfectly. Until recently, I had to reinstall the software and all of a sudden, it would only open in "Desktop Mode." All the video files I had used now say, "Media Offline." I'm hoping that there is a solution and I don't have to remake the entire sequence. How can I get the original sequence back with all the video files working properly?

    How do you "repair install?"
Things might have changed since CS2 (last time that I did one), but here are my steps:
Close all Adobe programs in a suite, or the single program if only stand-alone
Insert the Installation (Disk 1) media
Let it either AutoRun, or launch the AutoRun, if that is turned off in the OS
From the dialog screen, choose the program (if in a suite, you will need to navigate to that)
The installer module will have surveyed your system, and should have detected what you have installed
One should then get only two options: Uninstall, or Repair Install
When one chooses Repair Install, the installer module will again survey the system, but this time for the chosen program
It will then go about fixing the installation
Now, Adobe changes the installer module from time to time, so am not sure if CS5/5.5 would be any different.
    Good luck,
    Hunt

  • Opening CS4 Project in CS5

    Hi Guys
    I'm trying to open a CS4 project in CS5.
On opening I get a message saying it was created in an earlier version of Pr and must be converted. I click OK and get a screen showing all the project folders and clips with options to 'skip' or 'skip all'. I tried opening the folders but nothing is there and it says 'No items match your search'. I tried typing the project name into the 'File name' box; the same thing. I click on a clip but it that doesn't do anything either, so I click 'skip all' and when the project opens all the clips have been replaced by an image saying ' Media Offline'. I find if I right click on each clip I can relink but this would take some time as there are 75 in the project. Any ideas how I can open this project to work on?
    Regards,
    Graham

When you open a CS4 project in CS5, the required conversion will result in a new filename with _1 appended to the name. Then when opening this project you need to show PR where the files are located by directing it to the correct directory. Once you have done that for the first file, it will automatically find the other files in that directory. Since you have now offlined all the files by skipping them, I suggest you delete this CS5 project and import again from CS4 and taking the little time to direct PR to the correct media.

  • Cs4 projects in cs5

Hi I just downloaded the trial to see how much quicker cs5 is to cs4 but I cant open any of my cs4 projects? Is this not possible or is this just because I have the trial version. Also some videos I imported dont have audio attached, wierd.

Yes, there is no Australian version.  The downloads comply with US laws and regualtions.  For details on your rights as a consumer and product requirements in AUS I'd direct you to the following sites, please contact them directly -

  • CS4 project into CS5?

    Will a CS4 project open in CS5
(Maybe you could do a test on this Harm if you have time.)
I would like to know so I can plan project migration to a new system.
Answer would be good for the CS5 FAQ sub forum

    Shooternz,
You should be able to recall my posted 'rant', a couple months back when I found I could not import my CS3 project into CS4 without 'errors' that rendered the project untenable in CS4.  Both forum users and Tech support advised me to purchase, 'No Problems', then implied error on my part when it didn't - further compounding my aggravation.  Tech Support's story changed from 'No Problems' to 'serious errors can occur in some instances' & Adobe refused to refund me until I got my state's ombudsman involved.  Now my case may just be 'some instance' but I suffered a lot of emotion and wasted a lot of time. Before you spend the dollars, please, download the trial version and test it with your specific projects.

  • Working on a CS4 project in CS5.5 - Flash won't let me save FLA normally (ctrl+s)

I started working on a Flash project and I'll be moving it back and  forth between two different computers. The project was originally  started in Flash CS4. The other computer has Flash CS5.5 installed. So  when in CS5.5 I save the fla as a CS4 version FLA.
I hit Save As... and  then from the Save As Type pull-down menu I selected CS4 Fla document and I  assumed that from then on I could just hit ctrl+s to save the project  and it would maintain the CS4 version. But that isn't quite what's  happening. Every time I hit ctrl+s a Flash Compatibility Warning pops up  and tells me that I need to use Save As... and then Save As Type again  to keep it a CS4 document.
So basically, from what I understand, when working on a CS4 project in CS5.5 - I can't use Save. I can only use Save as...
This is really annoying because I am accustomed to hitting ctrl+s pretty often.
And  now EVERY TIME I wish to do a simple save, I need to hit ctrl+shift+s,  then select CS4 from the Save As Type menu, then hit save, and then  click YES when asked if to overwrite the previous file with the same  name.
    Is this a bug?

Flash will let me Embed the FLV but not let me use it for playback.

  • Opening CS4 projects in CS5 error with Canon 5D footage HELP!!!

HI Im trying out the new Premiere Pro CS5 demo and Im getting major problems opening projects.
Initially I couldnt open any of my CS4 projects but could import single sequences one at a time only, not whole projects. So I was finally working fine yesturday and today nothing opens that includes canon 5d footage . I get this error.
"This project contains a sequence that could not be opened. No sequence preview preset file or codec could be associated with this sequence type."
I get the same message when I import a whole project. Yet I can import a whole project 1 sequence at a time!!!
I can only create new projects which save and open but all older saved projects do not open.
    thanks
    remainz

Yes, this is an intermittent issue with CS5. Somehow, there’s a problem wherein certain commonly-used codecs suddenly remove/disable themselves. I had this problem, and it was driving me crazy as I couldn’t open anything, and it was just way, way too much work to recreate. So I opened up a new project. Lo and behold, the program suddenly informed me that there were codecs that needed to be installed. Codecs which, I’m sure, have been installed already, but obviously Premiere knows that they’re missing. Allowing the program to install them, and then allowing it to quit itself, and then reopening the program again enabled Premiere to open all of my projects again.

  • Can't open Premiere CS4 project in CS5

Having issues opening a premiere cs4 project in cs5. The machine I was using with Cs4 has died, so I'm trying to continue the project with CS5.
Whenever I open the project I get a message saying "this project contained a sequence that could not be opened, No sequence preview preset or file or codec could be associated with this sequence type."
I have the latest version of premiere cs5 installed, and quicktime. The footage I was using was from a Canon 7D.
    Thank you!

  • BEWARE: Loss of metadata when opening OnLo CS4 project in OnLo CS5

I had recorded a large number of takes over a two day shoot into OnLo CS4. I was pretty detailed as I shot the takes, using the comment, description, and good fields to mark notes to myself--it was going to make post-production much faster and easier. I primarily used the Description field to mark which part of a take was usable.
I recently installed CS5 and opened up my CS4 project into it. To my dismay, none of the Description fields in 250+ takes were populated. In looking at the SMVP "clip info" files, I've noticed that they were all rewritten during the project conversion process--the "Description" fields are there, but OnLocation will not read them. Opening the original project in CS4 has the same effect--the Description field is blank.
How can I gain access to this crucial metadata? Without it, I'll add hours and hours of logging to my job, which is going to offset a deadline I was already sweating. If it can't be fixed, there is no way I can ever trust OnLocation again in my workflow.

I too, am having problems with meta data  generated in On Location.
My Panasonic AG DV-1000 is not supported under windows 7, so I drop into Win XP to acquire clips in On Location CS4.
I then switch to Win 7/64 and import the clip into CS 5 On Location. I then make notes in On Location CS5.
When I import the clip into Premier CS5, all the notes are gone, even though, if I re-open the on Location CS5 project, the notes are all there.
    Suggestions?

  • Installed CS5 now CS4 projects don't work

Further to an assurance in another thread that CS4 and CS5 could happily co-exist I installed the CS5 Master Collection full version on my Win7Pro 64 system.
Now I have just opened a project in CS4. The media is all marked offline. When I try and re-link it I get an error message "File Format Not Supported"...
The original files in this project were M2T and .MP4 from Sony Z5 and EX1 respectively.
Any ideas about how to get this all working again? I did make an image of my system file before installing CS5 so can always revert to that, but I would like to be able to use CS5 as well as revisiting CS4 projects!
Just to add then even when I create a new CS4 project try and import either M2T or BPAV (haven't tried any other formats) I still get this "File Format Not Supported" error message. So it looks like CS5 has hosed my CS4's ability to import media!  There must be an easy fix to this.... and yes, Premiere 4.2.1.
    Cheers
    Mark

    Mark,
Sorry that we did not have a quick and easy answer for you.
At least with Harm's reporting, it confirms my thoughts that the co-existence of the two versions should not be an issue.
Over the decades, Adobe has been great about this. The only two instances of problems, that I can recall was with the CS2 Production Studio programs (all of them), if one later installed PrElements 4 - CS2 Production Studio got hosed, but was easily handled with a quick Repair Install of each program in the suite - took me about 45 mins. total. Obviously, Adobe had not anticipated a user with CS2 installing PrE 4, but by the time that I did, they had a KB Article on the issue. The other was if a use had PrPro CS3 installed, then installed CS4, and later uninstalled CS3 - it took some necessary elements form CS4, so again the Repair Install was the easy trick. Otherwise, no one issue that I know of. On one machine, I had PS 4, 5, 7 and CS for various reasons. No issue. Same for several versions of AI, both PageMaker and InDesign, and on the list goes. No issues.
Good luck, and hope the Project goes well, and that you'll get CS5 running smoothly,
    Hunt

  • After Effects CS5 freeze on project load with missing files

    Mac with 10.6.4
Open a CS4 project file with missing assets. It opens and converts to a new untitled document. Save the document and close. Open it again and it the application freezes up when loading the last bit of project files. Spinning beach ball forever. No error. It looks to be hitting a few missing files in the project but instead of putting up a "X number of files are missing since you last saved this project" message it locks up.
I tried to open the older file again and find or delete all the missing file references but midway through that process I got the beach ball again. Now it freezes up just loading the older CS4 file.
    Any ideas? Much thanks.

Files are on two different external drives, as is the project file itself. What I have done is copy the project file to my internal hard drive, disconnect all external drives, open the file and... it opens. At that point everything is missing, right. But I cleaned up the file, tossed out anything that wasn't totally necessary (this file is two years in the making). I saved it. Leaving it open I plugged the drives back in and started to reconnect the files to their references. I made sure there were no missing files. Closed, quit, and restarted and it worked. I lost a few things but nothing I couldn't rebuild pretty quickly. I suspect one of the reference files was corrupt? Maybe not, because the project file worked in CS4. Maybe a 32bit to 64bit conversion issue? Not sure but I'm back up and running.
Thank you for responding. Hopefully this info will benefit someone else. Twas frustrating. These boards are a great resource.

  • Importing CS4 Project into CS5.5

Can't get playback to the monitor from the timeline is the main issue (using a BMD HD Extreme I/O card). I can double click the video files in the bin and get playback to the monitor, but not from the timeline. The CS4 project is a 4 x 3 SD project. So far, I've simply double clicked the CS4 project file to open the project in CS5.5. Nothing. And, I've opened a new project in CS5.5 with the settings exactly as they were in the CS4 project. Nothing. I've made certain all tracks are active, etc.
    Anyone have advice on this?
    Thanks,
    Bill

I should add that after setting up the CS5.5 project with settings matching the CS4 project, I imported the CS4 project into it. Again, no playback to the monitor.
