CS4 Render 3D object

Hoping someone can help....
I've been making painting baked textures in Photoshop for years but now I've finally decided to learn how to make more complex textures with bump and specular maps etc...
I got cs4 extended primarily because I figured I could use its 3d functions to check my work; like make a quick cube - slap on the diffuse, bump, normal maps and view the composite texture with a variety of light settings and from different angles.
So far... yeah it kinda works okay.. I've figured that other programs would be more appropriate but I'm happy enough except...
When I press 'Render for Final Output' it ruins the texture! Like it all looks fine (if a little jaggy) until i press that button and then it all goes sort of lumpy grey looking.. the maps still work but detail is missing.... also i get little pinky highlights.... I've looked at the render settings but I can't see any reason why it just shouldn't be on the 'solid' preset.
I naturally thought that when i rendered something then it would look better...
Am I missing something...?

Hiya Steve
Firstly thanks very much indeed for the suggestions..
Anyway I tried what you suggested and set my cube to 'ray traced' but unfortunately it still goes really wild looking when I render it. I've tried turning the lighting right down but to no avail...
I'm actually at my wit's end with this.. I've tried everything one little step at a time to try and work out where I'm going wrong but everything looks cool until I press that dreaded 'R' button lol.. I really need to sort this out because I need some simple way of checking my bump maps, alpha maps etc.. look right without investing time and money in a proper 3D prog.
I'm going to upload the file somewhere - it's too big for an attachment here, and provide a link in case anyone out there fancies having a lil' look - despite my labours it's probably something really silly that I'm overlooking.

  • AE CS4 render engine / Adobe Media Encoder won't create a container for h.264 blu-ray

    here's the problem.
First, I tried to render a comp using the render engine inside AE using h.264 blu-ray preset.
It was supposed to create 1 file, but I ended up with 3 : audio track, video and a file with .xmpses extension.
I then decided to render it in lossless .mov, which works fine, but 3:40 minutes is taking up over 8gb, which is of course, unacceptable.
After that, I've put the .mov file into Media Encoder to try h.264 blu-ray there.
    Absolutely the same ********.
I'm using the Mac version of AE CS4.
Here is the screenshot of original .mov file and the result. As you see, it refuses to make a container. This is absolutely unacceptable

It raises another question: what settings do I need to encode the comp in 720p resolution without taking up lots of space?
Well, it depends on whether you need a production master (something for broadcast, for example, or to use as a source for other encoding tasks) or if you want a version for distribution. If it's the former, there's nothing wrong with "lots of space" - A Quicktime file with PNG or Animation codec is a good idea, but it will take a lot of space. If it's the latter, H264 is perfect but there's no built-in preset to take 720 material to the web.
    You could do this:
    * Pick the generic H264 template. You'll see that it will give an error if you attempt to render, because the default setting uses an H264 profile/level which doesn't let you use HD resolutions.
    * In the H264 video options, set the "Profile" menu to "Main" and "Level" to 4.0. That will keep it compatible to Quicktime and Flash player, while allowing larger frame sizes and higher bit rates.
    * Set Target Bitrate to 5-8 Mbps and Maximum Bitrate to 9-10 Mbps if you're targetting web delivery. That's a bit over what Apple uses for 720p content on the Apple TV, for example.
The H264 original preset will instruct you in the comment field to stretch to 640x480 in Output Module. There's no need, since you are using a profile/level combination which allows higher frame sizes.

  • CS4 "Render Work Area" Video Distortions

When I render the work area the resulting disply file is distorted. Prior to rendering the image appears correct. I have never had this problem before switching to CS4. I am having this issue on several different machines with different configurations and display cards. Windows XP Professional is the operating system. See attached image.

I also had these issues on a project today.
I solved it by not rendering the timelines  ( five of them)  and simply encoding them from AME
I am as puzzled as the O.P as to why this happens.!
Luckily I do not do these type of projects very often and they are not complex enough to really require playback rendering..

  • PS CS4 render video to quicktime problem

I created a 50 frame animation that I cannot seem to export as a QT movie, or any other avi, mpg etc. It exports an image sequence just fine. I must be missing something?

Hi, I was just wondering if you ever figured out your problem with video rendering. I just started working on a video project with photoshop cs4. I tried to render video and came up with the same error: "could not complete the render video..."  I can render still images but it won't let me render a QT movie or anything else other than still images. Please let me know if you found a solution.
    thanks...

  • AE-CS4 - Render in timeline goes only 2 seconds

After using AE for a while, when I go to do a "0" render, the green bar goes about 2 seconds in, then the timeline starts to play. It repeats when it hits the 2 second mark. If I try to use the "zero" render again sometimes it just goes the two seconds, other times I get an error message like, "After effects needs at least 2 frames to render....". Something like that. If I restart AE usually the problem goes away. I have lots of ram on a new Dual Core Mac. Running Snow leopard, system 10.6.3.

The length of a ram preview depends on available ram, composition size, and work area. 2 seconds isn't unreasonable on CS4 for a 2K comp. If your work area is longer than 2 seconds try reducing the resolution of your comp to 50%.
Some project specs would help us diagnose the problem.

  • PS CC 3D - can you cast a shadow but not render the object?

    Hey guys,
In PS CC, is it possible to render a 3D shadow + reflection, but have the object that is casting it invisible?
So the end result is a shadow/reflection on it's own separate layer?
    Cheers,

Here's one way that might work:
Make your 3d object including shadows on one layer, then in the Properties panel for the object mesh check Invisible.
Duplicate the layer and in the Properties panel under Scene uncheck Shadows
That should give you one layer with only the object visible and one layer with only the shadow visible.

  • Why does Photoshop CC and CS6 render 3D objects differently than CS5? Getting weird textures and shadows

I've been searching the web unsuccessfully to see if anyone else has experienced this issue:
Our company had quite a few custom 3D models made of our packages (OBJ and DAE format), which we were able to wrap and render in PS CS5 with great success. Once we updated to CS6 and then CC, we experienced:
    – bizarre shadows when opening CS5 files and rerendering
    – strange textures when importing the models from scratch in CS6 or CC
I've attached an image showing some of the oddities.
I'm working on a MacBook Pro with OS 10.8.5 16GB memory.
Cache Tile size 1024K; 4 cache levels, "Basic" Graphics Processor setting (I've tried Advanced and None with no difference)
NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M OpenGl Engine
The frustrating thing is it doesn't happen on all models; some OBJ files work fine.
We may have to stick to using CS5 for our 3D models, but that's very limiting when working with freelancers.
    Any insight is MUCH appreciated!

I've attached an image showing some of the oddities.

  • CS4 - Render preview image not scaled and position properly

    Hi,
I'm trying to edit video captured with a GoPro in R4 mode.
It produces videos int he following format:
    1280x960
    1.0 square pixel
    29.97 fps
I created a sequence corresponding to these settings. When no effects are added to the clip in the sequence, playback is fine in the sequence preview panel.
Things starts to get messy when I edit the clip. I get the red bar over the clip telling me I need to render a preview. And it's true, the playback skips and lag.
Here's some image of the result of the rendered preview:
    when playing:
Image above shows both clips are at the same frame. No effects applied beside a title.
When not playing and clicking on the preview image:
Image is centered, but the ratio changed.
Investigating this problem showed em that the rendered videos changed resolution (which is logic), but they also changed the ratio of the original video!!
Original video is 1280 * 960 for a 4:3 ratio, while the preview videos are 720*480 (not 4:3).
Now, I tried changing the rendered preview settings here:
I had no success. The only codecs I have found to not change the resolution of the preview are "Uncompressed UYVY 422 8 bits" and "V210 10-bit YUV". These codec produce high quality videos (same resolution, high bit rates) as preview that my computer still have problem to play.
    I'm not more advanced.
In my choices of settings, the only preview file format I have is microsoft AVI.
    So,
    1. Anyone ever had this problem? (and knows how to fix it )
2  How can I have more choice than AVI for a preview file format.
    3. How can I install more preview codecs to test the different options?
    4. Suggestions, comments?
Please, keep in mind that I'm still discovering adobe premiere. I started to play with it only 2 days ago. This is pretty much the last problem I have before starting to edit my footage.
    Thank you all.
    PS
Sorry if my english is not perfect, it's not my main langugage.

    @John T Smith:
already searched for the answers, but withiout success.

In the meantime, I found a post about a guy who had the same issue as me:

  • Does CS4 render styles any better than CS3?

All layouts I'm now doing rely on CSS layers. That's what the
Layout Police now require. But DW CS3 doesn't do a good job of
rendering the complex CSS in Design view (they look fine in the
browsers), so I've gone back to the future, coding my pages in
Source view like I'm using HomeSite and it's 1998. And I thought
    Groundhog Day was over.
Has anyone here been using CS4 for complicated layer-based
layouts? I'm wondering if it does a better job of displaying the
    pages.

    > First of all, I have to say I didn't know that layers

It's not. Frontpage and GoLive have always used the term
    (initially coined
    by Netscape) as well.
    > used the term layer as a div that covers another
"Layer" has always meaned a container that is absolutely
    positioned. Since
this is often a <div>, it has been colloquially
    'blurred' to refer
specifically to <div> tags, but that's really improper.
    This is why DW has
moved away from the use of the term altogether, and now calls
    them
    'absolutely positioned elements'.
    > So as far as an image of a DW layer (absolute positioned
    div) goes I

But do you understand CSS positioning, and its ramifications?

    You should. It is.

  • CS4 - Problems selecting objects

I have recently upgraded to Fireworks CS4 from CS3 but I
don't think that this problem has been there always in CS4.
Basically, I create a document with a few layer groups. Then
place an image in one layer group, input some text in another etc.
If I then want to select the image, I have to click on the layer
group or layer itself in the layers palette before Fireworks allows
me to select it. I'm sure that I used to just be able to click on
    anything to select it.
I first noticed this behavior when working on a document
where I created a few layer groups that I then shard between pages,
but subsequently I have had this happen on all docs including very
    simple ones.
    Any help greatly appreciated.
    Kind regards
    Tom

    Heathrowe
You are a saviour! Thanks so much, really appreciate that - I
must have selected it by mistake when I was sharing layers between
pages. You just stopped me trashing prefs and trying it in a new
    user. Awesome.

  • After effects cs4 render error/problem

I started rendering my video. After 1:30 minutes after i started rendering, the video changed intro something looking like a TV without signal, and stayed like that till the end of the video.Something like in this photo

I don't think you understood me. When you get the color bars there is missing footage in your comp. Try scrubbing through your timeline to the place where the color bars appear in your render. You should see the same thing in the comp window. Find the layer that is giving you the color bar image, right click and select find in Project, then right click the footage and use the replace footage option to find the footage.
If that does not fix your problem please give us a screenshot with the CTI at the point in your render where the color bars appear and reveal all properties of the problematic layer.
I just looked up the codec you are using. It's a highly compressed 3rd party codec and that alone could be causing your problem. There are lots of users of that codec that have problems. If you do not have missing footage in your project then Transcode the original screen capture footage to a suitable production quality codec and replace the footage in your AE project with a standard digital intermediate codec. Jpeg compressed Quicktime is probably one of the most versatile and dependable DI codec.

  • CS4: Reusable compositions / objects?

I may be overlooking something terribly obvious, certainly wouldn't be the first time...
As someone with a software development background, I tend to think in terms of building a library of objects and reusing them across projects. For example, I'm working on a series of videos and there are some 3d compositions I've built which are essentially the background for various text messages. In a perfect world, I would create this object once, and then be able to import / reference it and use in multiple AE projects. It would also be nice to paramaterize the text so that I could essentially drop an object into a timeline and at a certain point tell it, "here's your text."
Currently, the only option I see is to create an AE project, create the composition / object, and then just dupe it wherever needed. However, this approach would mean that if I wanted to reuse the same object in every show, I would have to put every episode of every season in the same AE project in order to reference it. The alternative would be a "save as" scenario for each episode, but of course that means if I need to change anything in the composition that I'm reusing, I'd have to replicate those changes in a boat load of AE projects (one for each episode). Can't imagine that the pros do it this way.
The fact that I'm fairly new to this coupled with the incredible power I see in AE leads me to believe that the kind of reuse I'm looking for is probably possible, I'm just too much of a noob to understand how. For that matter, I'm not even sure what concepts I should be looking for in the manual, making my typical desire for RTFM a bit constrained.
If I haven't been too obtuse in my explanations of what I'm trying to accomplish, could any of you point me to the right spots in the manual (or other resources) so that I can learn how to build a reusable (and perhaps even parameterized) compositi8on / object?
Alternatively, if this sort of thing just ain't possible, I'd love to hear how you guys go about handline these sorts of scenarios in your production environment.
    Thanks!

    Hey, man.
Thanks for taking the time to help.
Yeah, that sort of import is pretty much the same as the "save as" scenario in that regard. From the looks of it, I don't know how the Adobe guys could ripple in future changes, as it's essentially a copy and paste operation. Once you've iomported (pasted) the stuff in, you're free to edit and change it any way you like. Wouldn't want to be the programmer trying to figure out how to unwind all the changes you made after the initial import, which is probably why they don't offer that feature.
I was hoping that there was a way of saving compositions / objects out as some sort of reusable binary-ish object. These apps (AE, PrPro, etc.) were clearly written in C++ (I see crash messages with the .cpp filename referenced). From that perspective, what I was hping for would be analagous to creating a Library project in C++. Code it, compile it, and then the project using it simply imports the binary .lib file and references the appropriate objects. Of course, that's meaningless in AE, just trying to illustrate.
    Appreciate the ideas, though!

  • Lr 4.1 won't "Edit in Adobe Photoshop CS4" properly

    Hello,
Using Lr 4.1 w/ Camera RAW 7.1 and Photoshop CS4 11.0.2... When I try to edit a RAW file in Ps as I always have in Lr 3.x (Right click film strip >> Edit In >> Edit in Adobe Photoshop CS4) I get the following message:
This version of Lightroom may require the Photoshop Camera Raw plug-in version 6.7 for full compatibility.  Please update the Camera Raw plug-in using the update tool available in the Photoshop help menu. [Button options are: Render using Lightroom, Open Anyway, and Cancel.]
Render using Lr just keeps me in Lr, doesn't open Ps.
Open Anyway opens Ps, but not the image.
Using Ps >> help >> updates: says there are no updates.
But help >> About plug-in >> Camera Raw:  shows it is only Version 5.7.0.213
Interestingly, if I go back to Lr and hit Edit in Adobe Photoshop CS4 >> "Render using Lr" and then immediately do it again, this time clicking "Open Anyway" it actually DOES open the image in Ps.  I can edit and then when I save it takes a long time to write the TIFF format (several times longer than when previously editing through Lr 3.x),
Is there a fix for this so I don't need to do multiple steps to edit from Lr to Ps?  And is there a way to update the Camera Raw in Ps from 5.7.0.213 to 6.7 since Ps>>help>>updates doesn't catch it?
    Thanks!
    Mike

You are going to have to render using lightroom in order to use the latest ACR updates since you can no longer get ACR updates for PS CS4.  But when you click on Render using LR, it still should open in CS4 I would think.  You might be able to fix this by telling LR that you have another editing program, CS4, and then select it instead of the generic photoshop at the top of the this.  But I would not think that you would have to do this.

  • "Maximum Render Quality" Better to turn it OFF when using CUDA MPE?

    http://crookedpathfilms.com/blog/201...port-settings/
"IMPORTANT NOTE ABOUT RENDERING TIME:  Make sure you do not select “Use  Maximum Render Quality” if you are utilizing the accelerated GPU  graphics (Mercury Playback Engine).  This will not improve your video  and will only slow down the rendering speed by as much as 4 times!"
    http://blogs.adobe.com/premiereprotr...e-pro-cs5.html
"For export, scaling with CUDA is always at maximum quality, regardless  of quality settings. (This only applies to scaling done on the GPU.)  Maximum Render Quality can still make a difference with CUDA-accelerated  exports for any parts of the render that are processed on the CPU...
When rendering is done on the CPU with Maximum Render Quality enabled,  processing is done in a linear color space (i.e., gamma = 1.0) at 32  bits per channel (bpc), which results in more realistic results, finer  gradations in color, and better results for midtones. CUDA-accelerated  processing is always performed in a 32-bpc linear color space. To have  results match between CPU rendering and GPU rendering, enable Maximum  Render Quality."
Here is what I got out of after reading those two sites:
I should turn it off for it's always ON (when CUDA MPE is used)  regardless I check or uncheck it.Turning it ON only offloads the  calculation to CPU (instead of GPU) hence slowing down the previewing  and encoding performance.
So I guess I should have Maximum Render Quality setting turned OFF in both of squence settings and export settings.
However, David Knarr of Studio 1 Productions suggest otherwise:
    http://www.studio1productions.com/Articles/PremiereCS5.htm
"When you startup Adobe Premiere CS5 and you don't have a certified video card  (or one that is unlocked) the Mercury Playback Engine is in software rendering mode  and by default the Maximum Render Quality mode (or MRQ) is to OFF.
(Maximum Render Quality mode will maximize the quality of motion in rendered clips and  sequences.  So when you select this option, the video will often  render moving objects more sharply.  Maximum Render Quality also maintains sharp  detail when scaling from large formats to smaller formats, or from  high-definition to standard-definition formats.  For the highest quality exports you should always use the Maximum Render Quality  mode.)
When you unlock Adobe Premiere CS5 so the Mercury Playback Engine can use almost  any newer NVidia card (or if you are using a "certified" NVidia graphics card),  the Mercury Playback Engine will be in the hardware  rendering mode and the Maximum Render Quality mode  will be turned ON.
Since the software mode is not set to maximum render quality,  it can sometime render faster than the hardware render, but a a loss in  qualitly. If you set the software to  maximum render quality you will see that it is very, very slow compared to the  hardware render.
Here is how to set the Maximum Render Quality.
    1)  Open up Premiere CS5
    2)  Click on Sequence at the top of the screen
    3)  Then select Sequence Settings
    4)  At the bottom of the window select Maximum Render Quality and click Okay
It is always best to be using the Maximum Render Quality mode,"
    Now, I'm lost.

Okay, I am loosing it.....    You are correct.
I am not sure what I was remembering, I could have sworn that when I loaded Premiere CS5 for the first time before I unlocked the video card, the Maximum Render Quality mode was NOT checked.  Then when I unlocked the video card,  the Maximum Render Quality mode was check to ON and I didn't set it to be On.
I just when back and uninstalled Premiere and re-installed it, to see what was going on and I was totally wrong.
Sorry for the mistake and I will be updating the article on my website in the next 15 min.
Also, I have written a small program to do the unlock automatically.  The program is free and it works with the cards listed under the Automatic Mode.
If your video card isn't listen, just let me know what your card is and what you typed into the cuda cards file and I will add it to the program.
