CS4, Snow Leopard, and Transparency Gradients

Since upgrading to Snow Leopard I cannot make gradients in Photoshop that have transparency in them. They always come out as a solid color. Anyone else experiencing the same?

Snow Leopard and Adobe Photoshop CS4

Hi!
I've recently switched from custom built PCs to a Mac workstation, mainly for professional photography and editing purposes. I use photoshop roughly 12 hours a day (if not more...sigh), so switching to Mac would, in my mind, streamline and enhance my work experience.
...and it has!
However, Photoshop CS4 will often crash when doing a "Save as", which is the whole reason behind my post. I've tried fixes found around the internet (rebooting in Safe mode, turning Open GL off, reducing the ram used to 50%....I'm at the one where they're telling me to turn off and on the network...we'll see how that works!).
The other very strange thing with this whole thing, are 3 small scrambled windows that open with photoshop. I'll post a link to a screenshot :

Obviously I'm posting this in this forum, because I haven't had any of those issues when I was on my PC.
Oh, and as for the crash, it's more like a constant spinning beach ball.
Any help would be appreciated.
Specs :
iMac i5
8GB o' ram
1 TB WD external USB2.0 drive attached, using Time Machine on it.
OSX 10.6.2

Have you talked to Adobe about this issue? I have used Photoshop CS4 on Snow Leopard, and havn't seen any issues. However, the scrambled windows look like what Top Sites in Safari looked like before they (supposedly—I still get it occasionally) fixed it in 10.6.2.
Speaking of which, try re-installing the 10.6.2 combo update.
Also, try using the uninstallers to remove Photoshop (don't forget to deactivate first), and then re-install it.

Photoshop CS4 & Snow Leopard

I have heard of a number of issues with PS CS4 & SL. Not all like mine of course but mine is really becoming a nuisance. I can load and use both PS and Illustrator CS4 with SL but after a period of using PS, my short key functions just stop working. This is terribly frustrating. Even Ctrl + Click on the Layers for the drop-down menu gives nothing but grey selections. Totally unusable. Then when I try to Cmnd + Q to Quit, nothing happens. By this time I can still make selections in the images and layers themselves like adjust Text but not really much else. Using the mouse to select my tools still works. So I open the Photoshop Menu to Quite the App. It too is grey. Can't select it. Thus forcing me to Force Quit the Application. Most frustrating indeed. I think I managed about an hour of work in the 2-3 I spent trying to get by. I just did the Update for SL, but there was no mention of foreign program updates. Is there anything on the horizon that will assist these issues at all?

Interesting, I've had the ”quit app menu selection” greyed out in a totally different application than Photoshop (twice).
Wasn't this also a not too uncommon problem with Mail.app in Leopard? (don't know if it's the same for Mail.app in Snow Leopard)
I haven't tried Snow Leopard and Photoshop CS4 extensively yet, but will hopefully soon have time to let one of our retouchers test it for a couple of days and report back how it works.

Continuing font encoding and tag issues with snow leopard and CS4oI

I am looking for help with a font handling issue with snow leopard and cs4 Indesign. Despite numerous calls and hours on the phone neither Apple nor Adobe has been helpful. I have had this issue open with Adobe since oct 5 but they remain totally unresponsive to date. I need to be able to use Type 1 fonts and do the following , export a pdf from Indesign with the following attributes: 1) xml tags for stories and objects. 2) have the fonts encoded as ansi and embedded.
Some additional information - exporting to ps is not an option as it destroys the xml tags. and doesn't guarantee that the fonts won't become CID or some other odd encoding.
As it stands now,
Leopard (10.5.8) and CS3 creates ansi encoded fonts with xml tags.
Leopard (10.5.8) and CS4 creates ansi encoded fonts with xml tags.
Snow leopard and CS3 creates ansi encoded fonts and xml tags
Snow leopard and CS4 creates custom subsetted fonts and some xml tags.
If any one has any advice on how to force specific font encodings from CS4 pdf exports so that i can preserve the tags and get the correct fonts I would be grateful.

The font encoding is not a function of the OS version, but rather of how a font is internally encoded and the content you are representing with the font.
If you are seeing a difference between MacOS 10.5 and 10.6 with the same Adobe software, it probably has something to do with use of a system font that is somehow different from one version of the OS to another. InDesign does not use any of the OS' font handling software.
Assuming that the fonts are embedded, subset or not, what is your issue with whether a font is ANSI-encoded, custom-encoded, or CID-encoded? It should make no difference for purposes of workflow beyond InDesign for software that adheres to the PDF specification (including all versions of PDF from 1.3 and up to 1.7 plus ISO 32000-1 PDF and all versions of PDF/X and PDF/A).
Neither InDesign or any other Adobe application provides user choices for the encoding since it shouldn't make a difference. The encodings chosen by Adobe's core technology components are for a combination of optimization and to support proper text search, copy, etc.

Photoshop cs4-snow leopard-automatically save files with same name.

Does anyone know how to automatically update a file in another folder that has the same name as the current file? (photoshop cs4-snow leopard)

Does this apply to all files you work on?
How are the parallel files being defined – by location relative to the edited ones, filename, foldername, …?
Will an index of the parallel files have to be written into the files’ metadata?
And what’s behind this, why do you need multiple instances of the saved file, if I may ask?

Snow Leopard and idsdk5 / CS3

Hi,
Any other developers trying to develop using idsdk5 for CS3 using Snow Leopard and XCode 3.2.1 ? Adobe says it is an unsupported configuration.
I don't like to downgrade, and am wondering if there are others with the same issue and possible solutions?

Let's comparing some more notes!
Here's a few things I believe (I won't say 'I know' - I have no hard proof, and I don't have a budget to investigate getting hard proof )
I had extremely frustrating debugging issues with Xcode 3.1 - most of the time breaking into assembly code instead of showing the source code. No clear pattern: same breakpoint hit the first time shows the source code, second time assembly code. Fiddling with 'back arrows' sometimes got the source code to show up. It got so bad that I often had to revert to command-line debugging using gdb. Also a lot of 'mumble mode' - things just ................ coming to a pizza-colored cursor for no ................ apparent reason.
As a result, I've gotten into the habit of doing my coding and debugging on Windows XP with Visual Studio - once you get rid of the C-compiler RSP files and put the include paths into your project file instead, it works rather nicely, and to me it feels much faster than Xcode, even in a virtual machine.
I still do a lot of coding and debugging with InDesign CS on Windows/VS2003 - turnaround times (launch/debug/exit/...) are so much faster.
With Xcode 3.2.x on Snow Leopard things seem to work much better - so I might start to gravitate back to Mac-based debugging; time will tell.
CodeWarrior is over for me - I only use it to generate release versions (I still have some PowerPC macs around 'just in case' I need to debug something with CodeWarrior, but it's not been necessary).
As to Windows debugging: I use both Parallels and VMware, and my gut feeling is that Parallels seems to work quite a bit faster. Totally subjective, and probably unfair (the virtual machines have different histories, etc...) - but currently I find myself a lot in Parallels, with a virtual machine stored on an external USB drive connected to my laptop - I have heaps of virtual machines around, too many to store on the internal HD. Even with the slow USB bus 'underneath' it all, it works well.
With VMware I get a lot of mumble mode - machine non-responsive for minutes at a time, even with the virtual machine on the internal HD. Parallels has not done that to me (yet).
Another thing (might be fixed in Snow Leopard) - but have you ever had it happen that your InDy CS3 and CS4 plug-ins suddenly get a folder icon instead of a plug-in icon? Typically, all plugins will exhibit that behavior when it happens.
It's something with the package/bundle stuff, and the Finder getting confused. This is my unconfirmed theory: the Finder accepts a whole host of bundle formats, and the bundle structure used by the Adobe sample projects is 'iffy' - the Finder supports it, but occasionally, the Finder gets confused, and shows these plug-ins as folders (and that then further leads to customer support requests).
Now, if you go into the plugin package, it looks different from most other packages I've seen.
Here's how I fixed it: I added another build phase to the target - a 'Run Script' called 'Restructure Bundle'. I've put in the following shell script (using /bin/sh):

That 'restructures' the plug-in bundle and makes the problem go away - AFAIK the Finder has never gotten confused with one of my home-grown bundled plug-ins.
The whole point might be moot, though - for all I know the original problem of the Finder getting confused might be long fixed...

Snow Leopard and Photoshop CS3

My wife is currently running Leopard 10.5.8 along with Photoshop CS3. Are there any compatibility issues that anybody is aware of if she upgrades to Snow Leopard (and higher)? She runs a number of add-on Photoshop-compatible actions as well and wants to be sure these won't be impaired if she elects to move to the newer OS. Thanks!

She may have a few problems with the various aspects of CS3 according to this very useful compatibility guide.

Can I install both Snow Leopard and Windows 7 on the same version of VMWare 5?

Even though I am running Apple OSX Mountain Lion 10.8.3 on my new 2013 iMac, I have just installed VMWare's "Fusion 5" so I can have Windows 7 installed on the "Fusion 5, for limited usage needs.
I also would like to have a running version of Snow Leopard available to run my large collection of original Lynda.com training DVD's and CD's ... which unfortunately, now only allow the Lynda.com GUI player to operate in (and up to) Snow Leopard (at least this is what the Tech folks at Lynda.com have told me).
Since Lynda.com is no longer producing any or their training programs on CD or DVD any longer, and because they have stopped supporting their training programs to run on Lion and above, I will have to have a version of Snow Leopard installed to run these training programs, and still be able to run them using the Lynda.com GUI player.
So here's my dilemma:
1. Can I install both a version of Snow Leopard OS on my "VMWare "Fusion 5" .... along with a running version of Windows 7 on the same "Fusion 5"?
2. Do I install only the Windows 7 on the VMWare, and find some other "device" to run a version of Snow Leopard off of?
3. Do I consider using "BootCamp", in conjunction with "Fusion 5", to get access to both Snow Leopard and Windows 7?
Has anyone had any experience installing BOTH a previous (older) version of Apple OSX ... AND ... a Windows OS version on one installed version of VMWare "Fusion"?
OR
Any suggestions on how to set up having access to both Snow Leopard and Windows 7 .... while keeping OS Mountain Lion as my main OS?

Go to the  menu/About This Mac - what OS version shows there?
Do a backup, preferably 2 separate ones on 2 separate drives.
Revert to a Previous OS X
Revert to Snow Leopard
If you do revert, I'd use Setup Assistant to restore your data. This process takes a while, so do it when you won't need the computer for several hours, based on my experience.

Am using Macbook pro mid 2010 running on OSX 10.9.5. It does not read my old Seagate back up plus ITB ext hard disk which opens and works on snow leopard. The back ups were made on snow leopard and mountain lion. How do I make it work on Mavericks?

I have been making back ups on a Seagate Back up plus drive on a macbook pro running on Mountain lion. Sadly the mac was stolen and all I had was the seagate back up. I tried opening it on my old iMac running on snow leopard and after several visits to this forum managed to open it. The data was safe and sound. Now I have received a hand me down macbook pro which runs on osx 10.9.5. I'm assuming there is a compatability issue as the drive does not come on at all when I hook it up to the usb port. I checked the seagate drive once again on the imac and its light came on on that system. Then I suspected there may be a problem with this macbook pro usb port. But it seemed to work fine when i hooked my camera cord into it. Is it that I must reinstall mavericks. In which case how do I back up before reformatting or reinstalling. BTW I did the command+ R thingy and repaired my internal Hard disc which was showing errors. What do I do next, your help is most appreciated if you have had a similar problem.

Your 2010 MBP would be able to handle Yosemite, but I would strongly suggest that you get the current problem sorted out before trying to upgrade to Yosemite. I'd also recommend another backup that isn't created by Time Machine if you are thinking of upgrading. SuperDuper and CarbonCopyCloner can make bootable clones of hard drives. If you clone your existing system to a fresh external drive, you would be able to boot from that drive and recover quickly in the event that your Yosemite upgrade didn't work out. Time Machine backups are not 100% reliable.
It's possible that, if your internal HD is the one that shipped with your MBP in 2010, it may be failing. If it keeps needing repairs, that is probably a sign that it is approaching the end of its useful life.
Have you run Disk Utility's Repair tool on the external drive as well?
I mentioned the hub because some people have reported here that attaching their USB 3 drives through a USB 2 hub solved some disconnection problems. A good-quality powered USB 2 hub won't cost much.
My most recent brush with random disconnections involved a nice new OWC drive enclosure. I used the cable that came with the drive, but the drive kept disconnecting. Using a different cable solved the problem. You wouldn't expect that what appeared to be a high quality cable would be a problem straight out of the box, but it was.

I am running Mac OSx Lion 10.7.2. My problem is I can't search on an external network server for a file with the finder toolbar anymore. Nothing shows up and it will not search. I was able to in snow-leopard and am no longer able to w. Lion. Suggestions?

My issue is that I am not able to run a search in the finder toolabar on a network server. No files show up nor does it search on the server anymore. I was able to run the search in snow-leopard and am no longer able to do so with Lion. Is there a preference I can change or some kind of app or program I can download that will help me with this issue? This is extremely problematic for me as I am searching for files all day everyday. It isn't the fw in Network you want o use or look at, that's for something completely different.
My first suspect is the Power Adapter on the LaCie has gone.
At the Apple Icon at top left>About this Mac, then click on More Info, then click on Hardware>Firewire, what is listed there?

If your Firewire or USB isn't recognizing any device. A solution which has worked for some whose hard drive became invisible in 10.4 was simply to follow these four steps to reset the Firewire/USB bus:
1. Shut the machine down.
2. UNPLUG the power lead to the computer and any firewire/USB drive or devices.
3. leave it for 10 minutes.
4. Connect back up and reboot.
