[CS4] startup strangeness, slow, and creates an empty desktop folder
Hi all, have u seen this one? When CS4 starts up it first writes a folder to my desktop, always called .7R6GAHEG21T79KT0, and then takes a very very long time to load. I've tried the preferences procedure, but it does not seem related. I started having this problem after loading CS5 (I have to run both for a while until clients catch up). Well, thx for any tips!
jigs
I have not heard of this. Matter of fact, I've never heard of PrPro writing any folder/file to the Desktop. Actually, because of the differences with the Desktop root folder, some users have moved certain VST's to a Desktop folder, to keep PrPro from trying to load them on launch.
This is an odd one indeed. Hope that others will have an explanation for you and a cure.
Good luck,
Hunt

My MacBook is about a year old, and recently it became extremely slow during startup. At first it just seemed a little slow, but the past couple of days it has taken more and more time. It's now taking 5 - 10 minutes to fully come on. Once it's on, everything is fine.
I've troubleshooted in Apple Communities and tried all of the advice I've found, but nothing seems to be working. Here are the details.
My computer:
MacBook
OS 10.7.4
Processor: 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
Memory: 4 GB 1067 MHz DDR3
Available hard disk space: 163.27 GB free (out of 249.2 GB)
What I've tried so far (in order):
1. Check startup disk - Startup disk was correctly selected
2. Use Disk Utility to Verify Hard Disk - No problems identified
3. Updated system software - no major updates (I update regularly to begin with)
4. Check System Monitor for hidden activity - Almost no activity (no other programs were running at the time); no strange users or activity
5. Check Login Items - The iTunesHelper was causing an error. I removed it and replaced it with iTunesHelper from the iTunes Package. The error was fixed, but no improvement in startup time. (Current Login items: GrowlMenu, GrowlHelperApp (Growl is up to date), iTunesHelper, Dropbox)
6. Check Library System Fonts - All necessary fonts for OS 10.7.4 are present. I haven't added or deleted fonts besides what can be installed with the OS and or with MS Office. Here the full list (long):

7. Verified and repaired disk permissions (there were several differences, they were all repaired).
I don't know what else to try. My Mac's not making any strange noises, and is otherwise running well. The only thing that I can think of is that it's been too humid in my house recently (rainy season in Japan). But the slow startup seems to be the same regardless of time of day and humidity, and if it were humidity I have no idea how to fix that. Also, none of my other Mac devices seem to be similarly affected, so I doubt that's the problem.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
Thank you!It turns out that my hard drive was shot. I took my MacBook to the Apple Store on Wednesday, they kept it for analysis and repair. They replaced the hard drive, and I've already got it back (Friday; less than two days in total).
Although I did check my hard disk with the disk utility, it did not identify the problem.
Some other troubleshooting advice that I overlooked was to try reinstalling my OS and to try starting up in Safe Mode. Neither would have helped in this case, but they may be useful for someone else having similar problems.
Other advice - always make sure your data is backed up and that you Apple Care coverage is up to date. -
Late MBP 2010: Does anyone find that startup is slower and system runs slower?
I have a late Macbook Pro 2010 and once I downloaded the new OS X I've noticed that when I turn my MBP on at start up it is a lot slower and I have to wait 30-45 sec for it to get me to the main screen plus I've noticed my programs are running a little slower. Is anyone finding the same problem? Need help...how this is just a bug that can be fixed. Any ideas or fixes?
After upgrading from Snow Leopard, you may find that older, incompatible software may cause the sort of problems you describe.
Back up your documents and everything else important to you, not that there is any reason to believe your hard disk may be failing, but the symptoms you describe may presage an impending disk failure, and you should have backups anyway.
To help determine the possible causes of this behaviour read the following. None of what follows is intended to fix anything, but it will provide the additional information required to advance troubleshooting:
Boot OS X Recovery by holding ⌘ and r (two fingers) while you start your Mac. At the Mac OS X Utilities screen, select Disk Utility. Select your startup volume (usually named "Macintosh HD") and click the Repair Disk button. Describe any errors it reports in red.
When it finishes restart your Mac and test again for operation. If it's still not behaving as you expect it should, please post the results of EtreCheck in accordance with the following instructions:
Apple Support Communities contributor etresoft wrote a very useful app to quickly gather certain system information that may help point to a cause of this problem. Go to his website, download and run EtreCheck:
http://www.etresoft.com/etrecheck
Etrecheck will be in your Downloads folder. Open it from there. You may see the following dialog box:
Click Open - etresoft contributes to this forum frequently and can be considered a trustworthy developer.
It will take a moment to run as it collects its data.
Copy and paste its output in a reply.
Do not be concerned about anything that says "Problem" or “failed” or anything else that may appear in red.
EtreCheck was designed to remove any personal information (such as your computer's name and serial numbers) but if you see anything that looks like an email address or any other personal information that should not be divulged to others, please delete or obscure that information when you post the reply.
When you are finished with EtreCheck, quit the program. It occupies very little space, and you can keep it or drag it to the Trash as you wish.
After completing the above please determine if the problems also occur in "Safe Mode":
Safe Mode or "Safe Boot" is a troubleshooting mode that bypasses all third party system extensions and loads only required system components. Read about it: Starting up in Safe Mode
Starting your Mac in Safe Mode will take longer than usual, graphics will not render smoothly, audio is disabled on some Macs, and some programs (iTunes for example) may not work at all.
Merely starting your Mac in Safe Mode is not intended to resolve the problem, it's to observe its performance without certain additional components.
To end Safe Mode restart your Mac normally. Shutdown will take longer as well. -
Strange slowness in creating new folders.
I have not noticed any troubles with my mac in general. But for some reason when I go into a certain folder in my documents and create a new subfolder I get a spinning ball and it takes about a mintue (no joke) for the ball to stop so I can name it. This is crazy. Why is this folder getting so hung up? This is an folder for a website which requires several folders, what a pain. This mostly happens in the folder view, but also gets frozen on column view. Thanks for any help.
You can accomplish this by creating a new mailbox ( *plus sign* in the bottom left corner of the main window). I think this should say folder, but I didn't make this choice. It acts like a folder. Just click and drag emails from your inbox to these other mailboxes you created. The "On My Mac" just refers to where the emails get stored (/Users/yourshortname/Library/Mail)
D.
Edit: the funny thing is the icon for the new mailboxes is a folder, go figure.

How to import catalog and create new link to folder in a new external disk
I lost my data in my laptop. I have a back-up into an external hd. Now I would like to import the catalog and change the link of folder to external disk
You can open the backup of your catalog file by copying it to wherever you want it to be and then double-click on it.
You would have to re-link all the photos inside of Lightroom using these instructions: Adobe Lightroom - Find moved or missing files and folders -
I have been having issues with backing up photos in iPhoto for awhile. I used to burn them right out of iPhoto by selecting the folder, going to Share and then Burn. I have been getting an error message that says "Burn failed because there was an error producing data for the burn". So I started to drag the photos from iPhoto to a folder on the desktop, then burn the folder to a disc. This worked for awhile. Recently iPhoto will not allow me to drag photos to a desktop folder. I can select them in iPhoto, click on them and it shows the plus sign and number of photos, but when I drop them it does nothing. I can do it one at a time for about 4 photos, then it stops again. I also tried to export the photos into a folder on the desktop and it says Unable to create /Users/... I do back up photos to a TimeCapsule as well, but like to have a DVD in a fireproof safe too. I also ran disk utility repair disk permissions. I have an account for my wife as well and both iphotos share the same iphoto library but ths has never been a problem until recently. She also uses aperature, but pulls the photos from iphoto to edit them. Any help would be much appreciated.

Workbench is too slow and creating an archive in Workbench takes an eternity
Creating an archive in Workbench is taking too long.
Creating an archive for 1 four page document is taking 15 minutes and 15 seconds to prepare then another 9 minutes to create the 150K archive file.
We are experiencing this constantly and we need to figure out why. Are there configuration settings that can be made to correct this situation. We are running workbench in Citrix. Are there known issues about running workbench in Citrix. How big is your 4-page document source file?
I had an issue recently where one of my .process files grew to 34MB. There was a bug where it just kept inserting blank lines into one of the xml tags every time I saved it. But because it was constant, it compressed down in the archive quite well.
Rename the .LCA file to .ZIP, open it and see how big the files are in there. If there is one huge file, you might want to try copying the offending file to a new file in Workbench, delete the old one and see if that reduces the size. -
ITunes ripping certain CDs slow and creating distorted tracks
I have just recently swicthed to iTunes after getting my new laptop and ripped my entire CD collection using it (iTunes 9.1.1 I believe).
Anyway, out of probably 200 CDs I've found 5 that just won't rip properly and I can't, no matter what I look for figure out why?
If anyone could help, the problem is that iTunes claims to be ripping at speeds of on average x0.4 to x0.6 (Where as all other CDs I get about x13) and estimating a rip time, but the estimation only goes down by 2 seconds every 40/50 seconds. After I finally gave in and let it rip an entire track (which took around an hour) the song was broken and distorted almost beyond recognition. I then decided to rip the track using Windows Media Player and it did it just fine.
The Albums are;
Muse -Showbiz
Muse -Absolution
Muse -HAARP
Muse -Hullabloo Soundtrack
Death Cab For Cutie -Plans
If that makes any difference to the problem
The CDs are clean and just about brand new since I only ever rip my CDs and then reserve them to the shelf, does anyone have any idea what's going wrong at all.
ThankyouYou might be able to see if Gracenote is responsible for the slow-down by using the script Disable Gracenote
Hope this helps.

After OS X reinstall, startup is slow and it hangs as OS X is loading
I was given a Macbook Pro 2.16 dual core 15-inch laptop. The guy who gave it to me said it wouldn't boot. I tried, and it hung up on the gray screen with the gray Apple logo. So I booted off the installation DVD (no problems) and reinstalled OS X.
The installation program said I'd need to use Disk 2 as well as Disk 1. Disk 1 installed fine, and the computer restarted on its own, but that's where it all went bad. It wouldn't reboot.
It boots past the gray screen to a blue screen, where it sits for about 5 minutes. Then I get the window that says OS X is loading. The progress bar fills up (very slowly) and gets all the way to the end. There it sits. It "moves" (shimmers?) and I can hear the hard drive working, but that's all. I let it sit for almost an hour and it never finished booting.
I tried a bunch of "fixes" I found on this forum for similar boot problems (incl. reformatting the hard drive, reinstalling the OS numerous times, resetting PRAM, trying to restore the firmware to an earlier state, and running Disk Utility and Hardware test.) Nothing worked, and both Disk Ulility and Hardware test failed to find any problems.
I am stumped and getting annoyed. I never had such trouble after a totally clean reinstall before. Is this some kind of hidden hardware problem that won't show up with Hardware test or Disk Utility? Any ideas? I'd really like to get this one up and running!
Macbook Pro 2.16 15-in. Other OS Not booting upTried it. No luck again. I reformatted the drive and did a new installation of the OS. I was welcomed to Tiger and asked if I wanted to transfer info from another Mac. I said no, and I was then able to enter my basic info (name, address, etc.) myself. But halfway through the setup of the OS (right when I selected my wireless network) the computer screen went blue and that was it. No further activity for the next hour or so until I shut it off and gave up.
I am wondering if the problem might have something to do with a faulty Airport card or something. The computer goes to access the wireless and hangs.
Maybe.

Slow and Erratic Finder with Bad Folder Dates
I have an old PowerBook G4 running OS X 10.5.8. It was recently started with a bad date (January 2, 1970) and run without reseting Date & Time. Now the Finder takes 20-30 seconds just to open a single folder and way too long for other Finder related activities. Applications seem to run okay, once they finally launch.
Any suggestions on how to remedy the problem would be greatly appreciated. It does that with my Powerbook when I let the battery run out fully. Go into Date and Time, and if the 'Set date & time automatically' is already ticked, untick it and then retick it. If it isn't already ticked, tick it and set it to wherever your time zone is. Then restart your computer.

My macbook pro is running very slow with some strange mouse and window movements. The trackpad is very unresponsive and when responding the cursor moves on its own and/or very erratically. When on safari the window suddenly zooms in or highlights words and looks them up via dictionary. I currently have a wireless mouse connected and I am still having the same problems.
I fee like I may have a virus or my laptop is perhaps being accessed remotely. All of the sharing options are unchecked.
HELP PLEASE
Very worried!!Try these in order testing your system after each to see if it's back to normal:
1. a. Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM
b. Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
2. Restart the computer in Safe Mode, then restart again, normally. If this doesn't help, then:
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the
COMMAND and R keys until the Utilities menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and
after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears.
Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
3. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
Reinstall the 10.9.2 update: OS X Mavericks 10.9.2 Update (Combo).
4. Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks: Reboot from the Recovery HD. Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks from the Utilities menu, and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.
Reinstall the 10.9.2 update: OS X Mavericks 10.9.2 Update (Combo). -
My final cut pro has been slowing down unbearably and creating duplicates
Hi. I have an appointment booked for the end of next week to have my laptop looked at but I was wondering if anyone might know what my issue is.
I've edited 7 projects on final cut pro 10 and they've all been fine. For some reason every time I closed the program a duplicate of my library was created to the point I had about 100 files. So when I started work on an eighth project, the program was running unbearably slow and my start up disk was full. I deleted all the duplicates but it is still running slow to the point it can't really be used, and it is still creating duplicates every time I close the program. It's also telling me my start up disk is full even though I've just deleted about 100 files and emptied them from the trash.
Another thing, I'm using an external hard drive for this project so I haven't added any new heavy files onto the computer. They're all on the hard drive.
It's a bit vague but basically how can I avoid it creating duplicates and has anyone else experienced this problem, as to why it's so slow. It may be an actual software issue in which case I'll find out next week. But in the mean time...
Thanks
TomThanks everyone for responding. I've actually been away from my computer for the whole weekend so haven't been looking at this forum that I only posted on Friday morning. Actually had a heck of a lot else to deal with this weekend so maybe Innocentius and Russ I'd appreciate if you'd keep your rather irritating remarks to yourself. It's been two days.
I'm using Final Cut Pro 10.1.1. The system is OS X 10.9.2.
I've attached a screen shot of the details of my computer and a shot of final Cut Pro. It's actually got to the point where I can hardly open final Cut pro because the whole computer seizes up as soon as it gets turned on.
It took five attempts and several hours to export the last project I did, kept saying the start up disk was full despite the fact I deleted whole folders of videos and then tried again. I'm not sure it's the computer but more the program.
Any help much appreciated. I am busy though and not always quick with my responses. -

Strange issue with imap and a blank empty sent messages folder
So here is a weird one. I got a new computer last week, Mac mini core duo. Set everything up, synced my .Mac and it set up mail. I have been using mail, i try to view Sent Messages for one of my IMAP accounts which should have 10,200 messsages in it. I see nothing. On rebuild mailbox it goes blank. Some messages I send are stored until i rebuild mailbox and it again is empty. On my other Macs (powerbook 12" and dual G4) I am still able to view and manipulate this same accounts Sent Messages. One webmail everything still works as well. While trying to copy old messages down to the Powerbook to archive them I noticed that it was very slow, and messages which were not cached already caused the Copy to fail. I am using Courier IMAP with Maildirs and Postfix on FreeBSD as a server.
my IMAP server uses INBOX as its root.. hence that folder only contains...
