CS4 Stops Opening File at 95% and hangs

I was working on a project and tried to open it but the progress bar goes to about 95% and then just sits there.
I read through some posts here and verified the XML is valid with XMLWrench and tried to open the autosave files (same result).
I even tried copying _only_ the *.prproj file over to my mac (no media files) and had the same result, with both the original file and the auto saved ones. In other words, it had the exact same behavior on both Windows Vista and OS X and when tested on OS X, the media files weren't there so it seems like corrupt media files are not the cause.
I'm at a loss. Can anyone help?
thanks,
Craig

This happens consistently as my projects get bigger, How long did you wait before bailing out? Many people report waits of several minutes or longer. Seems to get worse the more assets you have, and the more complex the timeline.

Opening files with Illustrator and photoshop doesn't work, i have to drag the files from finder in to the program.
This problem appears after opening 4 a 5 files, rebooting helps another 4 a 5 times and appears again.

I'd recommend reposting in the Boot Camp forum, that is where the Boot Camp and Windows gurus hang out.
    Good luck.

  • "Can't open file; skipping it and continuing" Part2

I am also having a problem with iMovie 3 not being able to import my dv clip. The clip in it's entirety is about 15 minutes long, way past the 9 minute minimum. When I open the move project containing that clip it only imports the first 1.5 minutes, when I import it I get and error of -40, and knowing that it plays the entire 15+ minutes as qt movie I try to drag the clip into the time frame and get "Can't open file; skipping it and continuing". The clip works fine in iMovie HD at my computer at work. Can I try to splice the clip into smaller clips and exporting to use it at home?

  • InCopy CS4 and InDesign CS4 cannot open file at the same time!

I have 2 editors that make changes in my indd file. The one editor is able to open the file concurrently with myself (i'm in indesign) just fine. But when the other editor wants to open the file....I cannot open the indd file and vice versa. We are PC based.
    shane

Yes, we are all working on the same server.
And Yes on the Editor A / scenario 1  (Designer opens file and Editor A opens file concurrently). works fine.
Editor A closes out of Incopy and so does Designer. Editor B opens the file and Designer tries to open the indd file and now the designer gets the warning: Cannot open document. You may not have permission or the document may be open already. This is the same error if the Designer opens the file first and Editor B tries to open it while the designer has it open.
Editor A and B are able to have the file open at the same time no problem.
Also this happens to all indd files that Editor B tries to open. So it is not linked to a problem with the file.
one other note: on the server just above the indd file...when Editor B has the indd open in InCopy... a 'temporary' Indesign Lock File appears.

  • In CS4, "Cannot open file" "Please upgrade your plug-ins..."

    Greetings,
I am using InDesign CS4 on a PC. I am trying to open an .indd file created by our marketing department. I don't know what version of InDesign they use nor whether they work on Macs or PCs.
When I double-click to open the file, I get a "Cannot Open File" popup box. The box reads "Cannot open docname.indd. Please upgrade your plug-ins to their latest versions, or upgrade to the latest version of Adobe InDesign." It then lists 18 different plugins:
    ASSIGNMENTS.RPLN
    TEXT.RPLN
    SPREAD.RPLN
    MASTER PAGE.RPLN
    TEXT ATTRIBUTES.RPLN
    .... and 13 more.
When I go to Help > Configure Plug-Ins, I can see that I do have all of these plug-ins. But apparently they are not the latest versions.
Anyone know how I can update these plugins? I have searched for them on the Adobe website, but no joy.
    Thanks in advance.
    Jen

It's a safe bet that they are working in CS5. The only way to get those plugins is to install CS5 on your machine.
You could ask your marketing department to export an IDML file from CS5, which you can open up in CS4, but it might fail horribly (and it's guaranteed to lay out incorrectly if they've used any tools in CS5 that aren't in CS4). If you rely on this workflow, by regularly using a document going back and forth between CS5 and CS4, chances are very, very good that it will fail at a critical moment. The only really safe thing to do here is to get everyone using the same version of InDesign.

  • When I hit the escape key to close out the open file dialog box, firefox hangs or crashes.

When I open the "open file" dialog box using the ctrl+O and then hit the escape key to exit the box, I get an error message which I'm not able to paste here.
it says something about a runtime problem and if I try the same thing again to reproduce the problem, it will sometimes just hang and windows vista will tell me the program is not responding.
I've checked to see if there are any crash IDs but none were found for this time frame.
I have even disabled all add ons.
I'm currently using vista 64 bit edition and Firefox 6, beta edition.

    Hi,
Please also try right-clicking on the link corresponding to the language version and '''Save Target As''' to save the Firefox installer. If the problem persists, posting [http://answers.microsoft.com/ here] would also be helpful.

  • Photoshop Suddenly Stopped Opening Files

Suddenly Photoshop CC will not open any files. I was in the middle of processing photos, finished one up, saved it and tried to open a new file... and nothing. No error message. When I try to open a file, Photoshop lets me browse to the file and click on it, but then nothing happens. I've tried using Lightroom (which works just fine) to "edit in Photoshop" and Photoshop opens, but the photo never loads or even acts like it is loading. I've tried RAW files and JPEGS. Other editing software on my computer opens photos just fine. This happened BEFORE I installed the most recent Windows updates, so it's not that. I uninstalled Photoshop CC and re-installed. I've restarted my computer. I've completely shut down my computer and restarted. Nothing works and I've got 35 photos to edit by tomorrow morning. $9.99 a month sounded like an awesome deal, but my old CS4 was at least reliable. I'm on Windows 7. I do not have apps running. Nothing changed in the 10 minutes when I edited a photo and saved it and tried to open another one. There is no malware on the computer. And the only suggestion I've seen in the forums so far is to re-install the OS- which is ridiculous. I'll uninstall Photoshop and move to GIMP before I reinstall my entire OS because Photoshop suddenly quit.
    Suggestions?

Restart your computer to make sure you have a nice clean working environment.  Open Task Manager, and try to open a JPG.  Do you see any clues under the Task manager Processes tab?  Any double instances of the same process, for instance?
Is anything else opening with Photoshop?  Plugins, or extensions?  Do you still have Photoshop CC 14.2 installed and have you tried it?  That might get you past the current rush job.

How can I save of time by not having to save to the multiple locations (i did try t using finder to duplicate last file of folder but that didn't work too well)
Also the line where it saves to website_images in need to exclude those files that end in _2 and _3 (or files that are exactly 16 digits long).
And finally if in photoshop it come across and error I need to skip the file and log it to a text file or just leave it open and continue.
Also how do I have it run in the background so i can continue to use the computer?
and finally any other way to make it run faster?

  • CS6 stops opening files

Is anyone having issues with CS6 occasionally not opening files after closing the first file opened?
This issues corrects itself after rebooting the app and seems to occurs sporadically.
    - MacBook Pro 2012
    - OS 10.8.2
    - 8 GB RAM
    - Illustrator CS6 v16.2.0

I am having the same issues. I haven't noticed anything about 'after closing the first file opened'. It just seems to happen after about a half an hour, no matter what. I can use Illustrator CS6 for only so long and then it won't open any more files and I have to close it down and restart it. And these are files created in CS6. And as you said, it happens whether I double click the file or use the open command. Very frustrating. I thought it was a glitch in the software or are we the only two having this problem?

  • Problems opening files in QT and Preview

Don't know where to put this as it doesn't appear to be a problem with QT or Preview alone. When I double click a file Preview would normally open, Preview opens, but the file does not. I can open the file manually by using the file menu in Preview and navigating to the file, but again, double clicking opens the program but not the file itself. QT, same exact situation except that in addition many movies which played fine in QT a couple days ago will no longer play. Instead I get the following error message: "QuickTime cannot open the file: "_____.mpg" a necessary data reference could not be resolved (-2000)." Don't know if it's related, but at the same time these problems started I also found I couldn't import movies into Toast -- "unsupported formats" -- even though I'd just burned copies with the same version of Toast 2 days earlier. Oh yes, I'm using QT 7.0.4, but problem started with 7.0.3 installed.

Do you have a second user? If not create one, then log on as that user and see if files will open by double clicking and if Toast works correctly. If that user also has the problem, then it is a system level glitch. If not, then the problem is some file in your home user folder. Oh, put some test files in the Shared folder, and change their permissions so everyone can use them, with GetInfo. And be sure to make your test user an admin user.

  • Opening files crashes Applications and closes Finder

As I've been unofficial Apple "IT" for our graphics team in a biased world of PC and our IT haven't the knowhow or inclination to help I need REAL support!
After the last security etc update my iTunes crashed every time I tried to open it (Dock or Folder).
Re-installed from the Apple web download.
    It now works.
Now when I open a job folder through Finder on the desktop then select the file to open Finder closes.
When I have an application open - say Photoshop CS2 - and go > File > Open, once I select the file to open Photoshop "unexpectedly quits".
    This goes for ANY application!
BUT...If I drag a file to the application on the dock all is well?
If I want to place images /graphics etc from one application to whatever is open I now can't
I hold hands high as not being the most in-depth technical Mac man but have a general feel for most niggles having grown with Classic onwards!
This something new and hopefully someone can shine a light?

You should do it from Disk Utility on your start-up disk.
    What are permissions?
Every file and folder on a Mac OS X hard drive has a set of permissions—settings that determine which user(s) have access to each item, and exactly what that access is. For example, permissions dictate whether or not a particular user can open and edit a particular file. But permissions also determine which items the operating system—or specific parts of it—can access and modify, and which files are accessible by applications.
    What does repairing permissions do?
The Repair Disk Permissions function—the process that actually performs the task of repairing permissions—examines certain files and folders on your Mac’s hard drive to see if their current permissions settings are what Mac OS X expects them to be; if discrepancies are found, the offending permissions are changed to match the expected settings.
(In Mac OS X 10.3 and later, repairing permissions also performs one other, unrelated, task: If the invisible /tmp symbolic link—which is linked to the /private/tmp directory—is missing, the link will be recreated.)
Why is it necessary to repair permissions?
If permissions on particular files are “incorrect”—i.e., not what Mac OS X expects them to be or not what they need to be for your Mac’s normal operation—you can experience problems when the operating system tries to access or modify those files. For example, you may have trouble logging in to your account, printing, launching applications, or even starting up your Mac. Similarly, if an application—from Apple or a third-party developer—needs access to a particular file or folder to function, and the permissions on that item have changed in a way that prevents such access, the application may not function properly (or at all). The Repair Disk Permissions function can fix such problems by ensuring that certain files have the correct permissions.
There’s also a security element here: Many system-level files have permissions set a particular way so that applications or users that shouldn’t be meddling with those files can’t. If the permissions on certain system-level files somehow get changed so that access to those files is no longer restricted, you’ve got the potential for a major security issue. Repairing permissions can resolve such issues by resetting permissions on those files to prevent unauthorized access.
    How do I repair permissions?
The Repair Disk Permissions function is part of Apple’s Disk Utility (in /Applications/Utilities). After launching Disk Utility, select the desired disk—generally your startup disk—in the list to the left, then click the First Aid tab. At the bottom of the First Aid panel, click the Repair Disk Permissions button. (You could instead use the Verify Disk Permissions option to preview any potential repairs before performing them, but for most users there’s little benefit from this extra step.)
Permissions can also be repaired via the shell (Terminal) by using the command sudo diskutil repairPermissions /. However, it’s unlikely that the typical user will ever need to perform the task in this manner. It’s useful if for some reason Disk Utility itself won’t launch, or for repairing permissions on a remote Mac when connected via Remote Login (SSH), but otherwise you’re just as well served using Disk Utility.
How does the Repair Disk Permissions function know what the “correct” permissions are?
When you use Apple’s Installer utility to install software (such as Mac OS X itself or an OS X update), the installation package (the .pkg file you double-click to begin installation, or that Software Update downloads in the background for an automatic installation) generally leaves behind a receipt—a smaller Mac OS X package that includes information about every file installed, including the permissions each file should have. This receipt is placed in /Library/Receipts. When you run the Repair Disk Permissions function, it examines the receipts in the /Library/Receipts directory of the disk being repaired—which means the feature works only on volumes with Mac OS X installed—and compares the information in the receipt with the actual files on your drive. If the Repair Disk Permissions function finds a file with permissions that differ from what a receipt claims they should be, that file’s permissions are reset to their receipt-specified values. (If you’re curious about the information contained in a receipt, the easiest way to view it is to use the utility Pacifist; simply drag and drop the appropriate receipt into the Pacifist window and you’ll be presented with a list of all files installed by the similarly-named installation package, along with each file’s original permissions.)
It’s worth noting here that although the function is called “Repair Disk Permissions,” what is actually happening is that files’ permissions are being reset or restored to a particular state. It’s possible—though not common—for a particular file’s permissions to differ from what a receipt claims they should be without those permissions actually being “broken.”
Are all files affected by Repair Disk Permissions?
No. As you may have inferred from the above description, only those files installed using OS X’s Installer utility and whose installation packages leave behind a proper receipt in /Library/Receipts are affected by the Repair Disk Permissions function. This means that most of the files affected by the Repair Disk Permissions function are system-level files, application files, or system add-ons—not applications installed by drag-and-drop, and not your documents or other user-level files.
If repairing permissions is useful in general, why doesn’t Apple recommend it as routine maintenance?
    Apple does, quite explicitly:
It’s a good idea to repair disk permissions as a regular maintenance task after upgrading or installing new software.
That’s taken from Mac Help—in both Panther and Tiger—right on your Mac. Similar statements can be found in other Support articles.

  • Open file for reading and allow access by others

How can I open a file for reading and still allow others to access (read and write) the file?  I plan to keep this file open for the duration of my program and close it at the end.  However while my program is running another program will need access to the file so it can write to it.  I may be wrong, but I dont think that setting the appropriate permission will solve the problem...  Thank you for your time.
    Cheers!

    hi jmcbee,
I think as long as "readers" open a file as "ReadOnly", then the OS (at least Windows) will allow another process to open and write to the same file without a problem.  It's been a while since I've done this - maybe 7 years - and I may have opened the "writer" first, though doubt it makes a difference.
    Have you tried?
    Cheers!

  • The firfox stopped opening.. in loads and nothing appears

I was using the firfox... it started getting very slow and then stopped opening... it loads on the screen and then nothing appears and when I get to uninstale it I get a message saying that I have to close the browser... And of course the browser is not there..

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
The system looks like it's unable to start up, this could be software but more likely hardware, either way unless it will start up there is nothing a user can do to resolve this.

  • Visual Studio opening files when dragged and dropped in WPF app debugging session

I'm working on a WPF app (using VS2013 CE) which is intended to manage media files (TV Shows, movies, etc) and as part of this I am enabling the user to drag and drop media files on to the running app (by adding AllowDrop="True" and PreviewDragEnter="Window_PreviewDragEnter"
    to my Window definition).
The problem I have is that when I drag files onto the app in a debugging session Visual Studio then opens the file(s) when I stop debugging... this is seriously annoying as when I am testing with large media files (> 1GB) it just locks up VS for minutes
at a time while it tries to open the file or files. When I run the app outside the debugger this does not happen - it's only when I'm in a VS debugging session.  The only way I can stop this happening is to kill VS completely from Task Manager then restart
it - this is also very annoying but often I need to do this as it will freeze up for 5-10 minutes while it insists on loading the files in VS.
I understand the app, whilst debugging, is running in the context of VS but why does VS then have to try to open the files when debugging is finished?   I have looked through the options but can't see anything to switch this off and no amount of searching
has turned up anything - can anyone put me out of my misery with a solution to this annoying issue?

    Hello nzmike,
Does Visual Studio behaves like the following image shows and just hangs when opening your media file?
Do you have any other computer which installs Visual Studio? Can you reproduce this on it?
In order to troubleshoot this issue I think we need to locate the root reason of your issue. The problem can related to the following:
    1. Your project is corrupt and VS then trys to load that file when debug finished.
    2. Your VS is corrupt and caused this problem.
    So please do something below:
    1. Try clean and rebuild your project.
    2. Switch to some other PCs and use VS and your project there, check if the problem can be reproduced.
    3. You can backup your VS setting and try some commands: devenv /resetsettings and devenv /resetuserdata
    Details about VS command:https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/xee0c8y7.aspx
And based on th research of the above second step, if you can reproduce this issue on more than one PC, the problem is pending on your project and I need you to share a simple sample which can reproduce this issue. We will need to investigate the project
    in detail.
    Best regards,
    Barry
