CS4 stuck on hand tool.

Can't use zoom tool or select brush size.

Usually a stuck space bar.  Tap on it a few times to dislodge pizza crust.

  • PSE8 - stuck in hand tool

Hi - Not hugely familiar with the program but have used it a little bit. The editor seems stuck in hand tool mode and I'm unable to select other tools.... any idea what I've done?!
    Cheers

Check  your keyboard to be sure that the space bar is not stuck.
If that does not fix it, reset the tool via the little arrow at the top, left, of the tool's option bar.

  • Illustrator gets stuck on hand tool

I'm having this problem with my Adobe Illustrator CS3 where I'll be using the pen tool, and out of nowhere (usually after I've undone a couple of things it seems), the program will get stuck on the hand tool, and won't switch to any other tool. Time seems to be the only remedy because the problem will persist even if I try to work on another file, or restart the program. It also carries over to Photoshop, which I don't recall ever giving me this problem. Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

I'm having the same issue, also in Photoshop CS4 extended.
    1)  I just re-Ghosted to a pristine Ghost image to rule-out OS/software issues on my end.  I'll post how that goes once I reinstall the Adobe.
    2)  Diagnostics report no memory or other hardware errors.  Also, I've done a Symantec disk check, and no disk errors are reported.
    3)  Also, while the keyboard notion is a good thought, I'm thinking that we can't all have keyboard issues.  My keyboard is almost new and every key works beautifully.  Here is a filtered forum listing of others having the same issue.  As you can see, this is very widespread.

  • Need Solution to Program getting stuck on hand tool

Occasionally the curser becomes stuck on the hand or move tool.  I can click on other tools but they do not respond.  The system is not completley
frozen, just the curser/tool.  The only way to fix it so far is to restart the computer.  Plus it is happening more often now.
I really need a solution since I fear I am spending more time. Restarting computer than actual work!

Not a reply to your problem but coincidently, starting yesterday, I experienced the same problem. I am using CS4, have a iMac10.6.8, and the icon tool is the eraser (not the hand tool) that comes up. The only good thing is that it lets you save (unlike a true freeze) before you have to quit the application and re-start. The file I am working on is 1.56G and it has taken over 10 hours to try and merge layers together to bring the size down to its present 1.06G size. The "freeze" happens every 5-10 minutes.

  • Photoshop CS6 Stuck on Hand Tool in ACR & PS with Mac/ Mountain Lion

Photoshop CS6 gets stuck in "hand mode" after being open for a few hours. Suddenly, I can't use liquefy because Photoshop gets stuck in hand mode. I can't use ACR to the full potential because I can't use the adjustment brush because all I have is the hand tool. I try to open files, but all I get is the hand tool!
I know it's not an issue of pressing the space bar, I have tried that. I have closed all the Adobe programs (Bridge, Lightroom, Photoshop), then re-opened Photoshop and it does not go away.
It only goes away after re-starting the computer, but that is not acceptable.
I am on a 17" Macbook Pro, Mountain Lion 10.8.1, using CS6 products.
    Can this please be fixed?

Maybe a corrupt PS cache. Can you try clearing & re-creating your preferences? Follow instructions here: http://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/kb/preference-file-functions-names-locations.html

  • Issues with Photoshop CS4 and Spacebar/Hand tool

I am pretty sure this is not the other hand tool problem I have read about. What happens is when I want to move around a document I click the spacebar to get the hand tool, in previous versions of PS i could do this and when I let go of the spacebar the cursor goes back to the previous tool I was using. In cs4 it doesn't go back to the previous tool unless I hit the spacebar again. This also hinders my zooming in and zooming out, I have to click the space bar let go and then click either the ctrl or alt button alone to zoom. It used to be that i could hit space+ctrl and let go and it would go to the previous tool.
I have PS cs4 on WinXp. I have checked every place i could in the prefs and in the keyboard shortcuts. Any help would be greatly appreciated. This is really hindering my workflow.

That is a good idea, but the keyboard is fairly new and I didn't have a problem with this on cs3 last week with the same keyboard.
It could have just become noticeable!
Other than that you could experiment with different setting in OpenGL or look at keyboard repeat rate in the Control Panel applet.

  • Stuck in hand tool in CS6

why do I get stuck in the hand tool in CS6?????????????

Beside RAM, which is very important (I run with 16 GB and allow 10,841 MB = 70% to Photoshop), the scratch file plays an important role in performance.
However, I doubt either of those factors plays a role in your issue.  It's been a while since I briefly experienced that myself, but it was fixable as I described above, and I vaguely remember linking it to a software conflict, maybe with Safari running in the background—not sure.
Coincidentally, I happen not to use LR because I tried it and detested it.  I'm also not a Windows user. But I wouldn't be surprised if the culprit in your case turns out to be LR running in the background.
Others have reported un-updated NIK plug-ins, which I don't use.
As I rule, I feel more comfortable with allowing Photoshop at least 7 or 8 GB of memory.
Since I already mentioned the scratch file, here are my thoughts on it:
The rule of thumb I follow to figure out scratch space says to figure on 50 to 100 times the size of your largest file ever multiplied by the number of files you have open.  I have seen the scratch file exceed 800 GB once, an admittedly rare occurrence, but it often exceeds 200 GB when stitching large panoramas and the like.
As an example—and stressing that I'm aware that others have even more scratch space than I do—I keep two dedicated, physically separate hard drives as my primary and secondary Photoshop scratch disks and a lot of GB free on my boot drive for the OS.  I also have 16 GB of RAM installed.
Additionally, if you only have a single HD, i.e. your boot drive, you'd need it to be large enough to accommodate both the swap files of the OS as well as Photoshop's scratch.

  • PSE8 - Stuck on 'Hand Tool' All The Time...

hi, i'm using PSE8, and the 'Hand Tool' is all i get (9  out of 10 times i use the software) i can't choose brush, eye dropper, wand or anything, it's just stuck on the Hand Tool all the time. and i like to use the feature: 'Auto Adjust For Skin Tone' often, but all i get is the Hand Tool. anyway to disable the hand tool, or fix whatever's going on?
    thanks, Robin

thanks a bunch! yeah, tapping the the spacebar did the trick!

  • Stuck on Hand Tool during Transform!

Help! I'm trying a simple transform of the content of a layer's image and no matter what I do it's stuck on the hand tool and will not move or effect the art in any way.
What's going on? I tried a new file and same thing. Never had this happen before.
    Screen shot attached.
    Many thanks,
    Seth

It looks as though you are on the Rotate View tool that is nested with the Hand Tool. Switch to the Hand tool and see if that solves the problem.

  • Stuck on hand tool

Sometimes my tools get stuck on the hand tool. No matter which tool I select, I can't shake the hand tool and can't access the desired tool. Unless I close the program, or switch to another program and come back. Refreshing the screen doesn't help.
Is this a bug? Any ideas on how to prevent this? or kill it when it happens?
    thanks in advance!

    Worked for me!
I have spent all night re-starting, re-booting, re-installing and deleitng my preferences, to no avail.
I could not for the life of me get the damned hand tool to go away. Then I finally resort to adobe support and see this seemingly stupid suggestion that the space bar might be stuck. Sounds stupid but it can't hurt to check, right?
Turns out that was a brilliant suggestion. my space bar was stuck down.
Crazy how some little thing like that can have you ready to throw your computer out the window.
thanks for the suggestion. You saved my life!

  • Stuck with hand tool in Photoshop CS4 under Lion

Title says it all really. I can’t select any other tool and therefore can't do anything with a PSD file except LOOK at it! I've seen mention of this problem in another thread, but that was evidently under Windows. No mention of it in Adobe's list of problems with their products under Lion. PS CS4, OS X 10.7.1 on 27" iMac (April 2010). Fortunately I only use PS occasionally nowadays, but this also means I can't justify the expense of upgrading to CS5.

Thanks, but that's almost entirely about the Windows version, and I've already deleted my settings by launching PS holding cmd-alt-shift down. Made no difference.

  • Curser stuck on hand tool

Occasionally the curser becomes stuck on the hand or move tool.  I can click on other tools but they do not respond.  The system is not completley
frozen, just the curser/tool.  The only way to fix it so far is to restart the computer.  Any ideas.  This only happens very rarely but it is very annoying.
I'm using Elements 8 and windows xp that is all up to date.
    Michael

I get this too, I am a professional retoucher and have been using Photoshop since it's earliest days, (I pre-ordered CS5 as I have to be more up to date than any of my clients) I also bought a brand new Mac to run it on, as top spec as I could find.
Sometimes during an image edit my cursor will get stuck on the hand (panning tool). No matter what I try, I can't clone, erase etc even though the clone/erase tool is selected. I can even change brush shapes, but the cursor remains as a hand and the tool I want doesn't work. It will only go back to the tool I want after a prolonged wait, (maybe 3 minutes or so) and even quiting and restarting photoshop doesn't do the trick.
It's getting to be the bain of my life at the moment and embarrassing when retouching with a client watching.

  • Hand Tool

I am using Fireworks CS4 and the hand tool will not go away
if anyone knows what I am doing wrong let me know.... Thanks in
    advance...

Thanks!  I'll try it if it happens again!
    half hour later . . .
Okay everyone . . .  the people suggesting tapping the space bar are correct.  When the tool sticks as the hand, tap the space bar, and that clears it.
I am not convinced that the keyboard is the problem.  Rather, I think that there is something in the program that causes the hand tool to appear and then stick, and the space bar clears it.  Here's why:
FYI - I said what follows, above; but I'll repeat here for clarity:
To try to rule out issues on my end, I . . .
    1) re-Ghosted my PC back to a pristine image (then DL & installed all updates) to try to rule out system software issues
    2) did Symantec disk check to try to rule out disk errors
    3) DL Photoshop from Adobe website all over again (to try to ensure error-free file); install and reboot
    4) DL Photoshop update; install and reboot
It doesn't get much cleaner than that.  In addition, my keyboard (Saitek Eclipse II) is pretty new.
Here ias where the hand tool issue has appeared repeatedly for me:
I used photoshop for a couple of hours doing simple layers, cropping, and text with effects without problems.  But then, I closed the program and opened it up again to do something more complex.  The hand-tool issue appeared at the same point it did before I went through all this:
I had some photos that I wanted to use as fill for shapes on the masked layer below the group . . .
    1. I grouped 6 layers
    2. ctrl-click the masked layer below the group, then clicked on the group
    3. Choose layer>layer mask> reveal selection (puts the grouped photos into the shapes in layer below)
And this is where the hand appears--not every timwe, but a few times.  I was also frequently going back and forth between a You Tube viseo and Photoshop when the hand appeared.
Anyway, tapping the sapce bar seems to resolve it.
    Cheers.

  • Mouse drag, hand tool not working at all!

So I've installed Photoshop CC 2014 and Illustrator CC 2014 on my computer, started a new file but only found that any action that includes mouse dragging - creating shapes, hand tool, pen tool - do not work at all, everything just do not respond, when creating a shape it will treat it as if I have clicked once (which pops out the create rectangle window for size input..), the same situation happens to Photoshop as well (perhaps all Adobe CC software). I've been trying everything that have been suggested on the forum (some from the links below): removing all other software at the background (spotify, 1password, etc). Also I've tried with using different sets of keyboard and mouse, either wired and wireless, still no luck. One situation that finally works is that all software work perfectly fine in safe mode, then I rebooted back to normal mode, try killing any background process that was not running in safe mode, still...not working at all...
