CS4 Text Wrap issue - HELP!

HELP!  I taught myself PageMaker 6.5 and I got REALLY good at the basics, but not so great at the in-depth things.  Consequently, when I upgraded to InDesign CS4, the same holds true, so please feel free to treat me like a 2-year-old in your explanations.  Now for my dilemma:
I create a quarterly magazine.  Most of the pages are 2- or 3-column spreads.  Many times, a photograph (and its caption) will span more than just one column, but not necessarily the entire width of two.  In other words, my photo could span all of column 1 and 1/2 of column 2, with the text flowing to the right of the photograph, then expanding to fill all of column no. 2 beneath it.  In PageMaker, when I text-wrapped around the pic, leaving enough bottom text wrap to insert my captioning, the text would wrap perfectly, keeping the text in perfect alignment horizontally across the columns.  That, in turn, kept the bottom edge of all my columns exactly equal.
In InDesign, however, that's not the case. The text doesn't align equally horizontally across the columns, hence ruining my clean horizontal text margin at the bottom.  This happens any time I have a photo that spans all of one and part of one (or two, in the case of a centered photograph) column.  In fact, even if I place a photo that fits within just one column, the horizontal text alignment gets screwed up.  I'm attaching a .pdf of page 35 of the issue I'm working on to show you what I mean.
I've tried choosing all three columns and clicking the "align top edges," but that just drags all three columns up to the 1/2 inch margin at the top of the page, and my text actually starts 1/4" beneath that (3/4" from the top page edge) because of the page numbering, and when I drag all three columns back down to the 3/4" mark, the wrapping gets all screwed up again.  So I tried "align bottom edges," and that didn't work either (it worked to a point... anything that actually had text flowing to the bottom of the column was fine, the same thing occurred then above the column with a photo spanning all of it.  Geez, I'm confused just trying to explain it.  Hopefully, the attached .pdf will help make sense of this.
Consequently, I'm moving columns manually for this issue (all 60 pages of it), because it has to be at the printers by the end of the weekend and I'm just plain out of time.  If anyone can give me some guidance so I don't have to do this again next time, I'd really appreciate it.
You can email me at [email protected] if you have any ideas. Thanks for your help.
Barb

Thanks so much to both Peter and Bob.  I'm sure this will fix the problem.  At least I know it wasn't something I was doing wrong and it really is a glitch in the program.  I'll play with the baseline grid, since it seems that will be the best option. I have a few months to experiment with it before the next issue goes to press.
Does setting a preference act like a default?  In other words, will it then apply to all pages in all new documents I create or is it specific to the document in which I'm working when I set it? If the latter, I'm guessing I can just include it when I set up my master page so it will apply throughout the issue?  Which, of course brings me to yet another question: how do I save my Master Pages so I don't have to redo them with each issue?
I'm finding that the majority of InDesign is a lot more user-friendly and easier to navigate than the old PageMaker -- many fewer steps for the same end result.  I hope to take a class if I can find one in my area, because I'm certain I'm doing many things the "hard way."  Learning as you go is okay, but you miss a lot of the finer points along the way and spend entirely too much time trying to figure things out or bugging people like you in this forum.
I apologize if some of what I ask seems rather elementary.
And Scott, sorry, but I've always felt that, out of all the fonts available, Comic Sans is the most readable.

  • Text Wrapping issue in Long Texts in ECC 6.0

    Hi,
    We are migrating Tasklist data from SAP 3.1i system to SAP 6.0. So we were moving the existing Long Text in 3.1i with the same paramenters to 6.0, I am facing an issue of text Wrapping(while displaying).
    I am updating complete header data like - TDID, TDOBJECT, TDNAME, Lang, TDFORM(SYSTEM as in 3.1i), Version, Line Size(72 as in 3.1i), Number of Lines by using SAVE_TEXT FM.
    I can see the text is updated properly but when i open the text in display mode(With PC Editor), i can see the text getting wrapped. Line size is limited to 40 Characters whereas in 3.1i its 72 characters.
    Please help me here.
    Thank you.
    Prasad

    Actually i tested with READ_TEXT function module. All parameters are fine, matches exactly with 3.1i but i am facing this issue while displaying.
    In display mode - in 3.1i Ruler shows 7.2 Inches(72 Characters) whereas in 6.0 its 4 inches(40 Characters). Should i go for any settings change so that i can see complete 72 characters in 1 line.

  • CS4 text wrap over anchored object

    Every time I place an anchored object (doesn't matter if it's graphic or text frame) and apply text wrap, Indesign freezes permanently and only solution is killing it via task manager.
    I opened CS3 file with anchored objects w/ txt wrap and the same freeze happens when trying to move, delete or apply different wrap settings to object.
    It never happened in previous version of ID on my machine.
    Any solution to this problem? Thanks.

  • Text wrap issue

    I had graphic elements on a page that I had text wrapped around correctly. I dedcided I was going to use those elements for all pages, so I moved them to the masters. When I did that, the text wrap went away. It still shows up on the master pages, but its not applying to any of the document pages.
    I can fix this manually, but I have to believe as good a program as ID is, that this little issue can't have been overlooked.
    Anyone out there have a solution?
    Thanks

    That was one of the short-comings of earlier versions of ID -- Text wrap on a master item only worked on the other master page items, not on a live page.
    Short of scripting, about the best option I can think of is to select it on the master page and cut it it to the clipboard, then "paste in place" on each live page, which is a real pain in the neck.
    I'd definitely ask in the scripting forum if anyone has a script for CS2 already written.

  • Best-practice for use of object styles to manage image text wrap issues when aiming at both print and EPUB output?

    I have a work-flow question about object styles, text-wrap, and preparing a long document with lots of images for dual print/EPUB output in InDesign CC 2014.
    I am sort of experienced with InDesign but new to EPUB export. I have hundreds of pages and hundreds of images so I'd like to make my EPUB learning curve, in particular, less painful.
    Let me talk you through what I'm planning and you tell me if it's stupid.
    It's kind of a storybook-look I'm going for. Single column of text (6" by 9" page) with lots of small-to-medium images on the page (one or two images per page), and the text flowing around, sometimes right, sometimes left. Sometimes around the bounding box, sometimes following the edges of the images. So in each case I'm looking to tweak image size and placement and wrap settings so that the image is as close to the relevant text as possible and the layout isn't all wonky. Lovely print page the goal. Lots of fussy trade-offs and deciding what looks best. Inevitably, this will entail local overrides of paragraph styles. So what I want to do, I guess, is get the images as closely placed as possible, before I do any of that overriding. Then I divide my production line.
    1) I set aside the uniformly-styled doc for later EPUB export. (This is wise, right? Start for EPUB export with a doc with pristine styles?)
    2) With the EPUB-bound version set aside, I finish preparing the print side, making all my little tweaks. So many pages, so many images. So many little nudges. If I go back and nudge something at the beginning everything shifts a little. It's broken up into lots of separate stories, but still ... there is no way to make this non-tedious. But what is best practice? I'm basically just doing it by hand, eyeballing it and dropping an inline anchor to some close bit of text in case of some storm, i.e. if there's a major text change my image will still be almost where it belongs. Try to get the early bits right so that I don't have to go back and change them and then mess up stuff later. Object styles don't really help me with that. Do they? I haven't found a good use for them at this stage (Obviously if I had to draw a pink line around each image, or whatever, I'd use object styles for that.)
    Now let me shift back to EPUB. Clearly I need object styles to prepare for export. I'm planning to make a left float style and a right float style and a couple of others for other cases. And I'm basically going to go through the whole doc selecting each image and styling it in whatever way seems likeliest. At this point I will change the inline anchors to above line or custom, since I'm told EPUB doesn't like the inline ones.
    I guess maybe it comes down to this. I realize I have to use object styles for images for EPUB, but for print, manual placement - to make it look just right - and an inline anchor seems best? I sort of feel like if I'm going to bother to use object styles for EPUB I should also use them for print, but maybe that's just not necessary? It feels inefficient to make so many inline anchors and then trade them for a custom thing just for EPUB. But two different outputs means two different workflows. Sometimes you just have to do it twice.
    Does this make sense? What am I missing, before I waste dozens of hours doing it wrong?

    I've moved your question to the InDesign EPUB forum for best results.

  • Text Wrapping issue in text

    Hi
         I am creating an application which take the input from the open XML of MS Office, and plot the text same as the powerpoint .
         But the default spacing between the each word of the paragarph not same as  the powerpoint, so the text goes to the new line.
         I attached a file which gives the clear picture.
          so please let me know if anyone know the solution.
         Thanks

    Word spacing is not the only difference. Letter spacing is also tighter in the first image, and line height is also smaller there. Even if you had the same line breaks the last line would overlap the red box in the second image. It looks to me like the character size is slightly larger in the second image as well, but that's harder to judge from this screenshot.
    It is going to be impossible to get exactly the same output from the two different composition engines. You are going to have to decide how close is "good enough."
    What I would do is this:
    1. Decrease fontSize (or lineHeight, if you're happy with the character sizes) by very small amounts until the 14th line of text fits entirely inside the red box
    2. Decrease trackingRight by very small amounts until you get roughly similar line breaks. The problem is that the "correct" value for one sample set of text will most likely not work for a different set of text. You'll have to decide what text is representative for your application and choose a tracking value that works best for that set.

  • Text wrap around an achored object

    I'm continually frustrated by a text wrap issue around an achored object in a story. I have two anchored textframes that are taking up the top half of a text frame, one of them has a full column text wrap applied to it which forces the first title of the regular text to begin beneath it.  My issue is that sometimes this title falls too close to the anchored text frames but if I add space to the bottom of the text wrap, the title does not snug to the text wrap but will stay tight until the wrap adjustment invades the cap height and then it will suddenly jump way down what looks like the full line height of the style, creating way too much of a gap. I can't seem to get a clean even space between my anchored textframe and the first line of text. I'm doing hundreds of files with this set up and they are looking different because the anchored text frames are all different sizes and I can't get that space between them and the first title to be uniform.  I'm sure I'm missing an option somewhere, but I can't figure out what it is. I want the first line of text to snug up to the edge of the text wrap, and it just won't do it. I've looked through all my style options and can't figure out what I'm missing.  "Align to grid" is set to "None," and "Start Paragraph" is set to "Anywhere."
    I'm really confused by this. Anyone have any ideas what I'm doing wrong or if I've run up against a limitation in the application?
    I'm using CS5 on a Mac 10.5.8

    Sorry Grant,
    Your "solution" does not work in this instance. The boxes you see in my image are the first things on that page. The anchor paragraphs are set to start in a new column so that they purposely start a new page. The story starts 3 pages before this and you can't have anchored objects more than a spread away from their anchors, so your solution simply does not work. I would have to break my lesson into multiple stories, which is the very thing I'm trying not to do to keep my workflow efficient.
    It looks like it is a limitation of ID's anchored object workflow (which has never been ideal, but I'm trying to work with it). Unfortunately, tables are also not a safe solution because long tables used together with span/split column features cause ID to crash (predictably)--as far as I can tell, Adobe doesn't appear to be interested in fixing this bug. I've learned the hardway not to combine them in any workflow unless I want to restart ID multiple times a day.
    In case you are wondering, this complicated workflow resulted from a shortcoming in ID anyway. I have to place the text in table cells so that I can use the SIde Heads plugin to pull them automatically into anchored objects. I have to anchor them into floating objects to get the rounded corners on background squares that is BEHIND the text. I could do it as tables in the flow of text if I could create anchored backgrounds with rounded corners that floated behind the tables, but unfortunately, ID will not let you change the stacking order of anchored objects--they always float in front and there is no option to push them behind--and tables are uniformly square and boring. I tried several times to create an easily automatable workflow for this project, and complicated as it is, this is the only one that actually works.
    I will have to manually adjust the paragraph spacing and leading. That seems to be only adjustment that gives me the fine control that I want. I just wish it were consistent from document to document so I could set it in the style and not have to eyeball everything.

  • Text wrap not working properly CS4

    Despite trying numerous times over last few days, reviewing multiple tutorials to make sure I know what I'm doing, I simply cannot get the text wrap options to work properly. In SOME instances (not all ... why?!?) I can select text wrap, but when I try to make further adjustments (wider margin or switch to object wrap, for instance), it simply does not allow selection. The choices once I'm in the text wrap box are grayed out (margins, contour box, etc) as not available. WHAT is going on?! Do I have defective software? Is it me? I've even reinstalled the whole CS4. <aarrggh> I am SO frustrated!

    Things like this are almost always attributable to user error.
    If you're new to InDesign I'd suggest investing in Sandee Cohen's Visual Quick Start Guide: http://amzn.to/ggnCUx
    More details, screenshots, etc would help us, though.

  • Text Wrap Feature Suddenly Disappeared

    I've been using InDesign for years and years. I currently have CS5. Suddenly, the text wrap feature was completely missing from InDesign. This feature was always something that I used almost on a daily basis- suddenly it jsut disappeared! I tried several things to make it come back, including the simple keyboard shortcut, but nothing worked. I talked to someone with Adobe and after they gave me several things to do in InDesign which didn't help bring the feature back, they said that they think that the text wrap feature's file must have gotten damaged somehow and I should uninstall and reinstall indesign. This is on my work computer and my company bought me the creative suite years ago, and i'm not sure where all the license info and all that is.
    So my question is, does anyone else know a solution to this problem? Or do you think my best bet is to just uninstall and reinstall it? And will i have any issues doing this, since I don't have any of the serial numbers or anything from the original purchase? Thanks SO much for your help!

    They had me delete the english preferences file (it's explained in the link that Salah Fadlabi provided in the first post.) I'll try to create a new user on the computer real fast. This is for my work computer (I use InDesign almost every day to create marketing materials) and I'm leaving work in 40 minutes. I'll try to do this real fast and then report back here. Thanks for your help

  • InDesign CS6 Text Wrap increments not accurate.

    My work jumped from CS4 to CS6 so I don't know if CS5 had the same issue. Anyway. Text wrap (around bounding box) seem to now be very limited. For example, If I have, say a .25 text wrap on the bottom of a object, but I need to change it slightly to .245 the text does not move. The box shows the change, but the text below just doesn't follow suit. CS4 I was able to make tiny incremental changes to the wrap, but it is not working for me now in CS6. Any ideas, answers?

  • Anchored Objects with text wrap, need vertical space

    Hi.  I'm a fairly new InDesign user and have just this past week learned about anchored objects, threading text frames, numbered lists, and some other fun options. So far InDesign has done most everything I need fairly elegantly. However, I have not been able solve one issue.
    In my book I have numerous pages that have this issue; I'll just describe one case. On this page there are 4 graphics running down the right side of the page. These are not anchored graphics. They do have text wrap defined on the left side and bottom. There is text that wraps lovely on the left.
    Each of these four graphics has a specific paragraph it needs to top align with. However, the text it aligns with may not take up as much vertical space as the graphic does. When I anchor each graphic with the paragraph it needs to align with, the four graphics overlap each other.
    At the moment, to make it look right, I have placed each graphic individually and added a blank paragraph above each paragraph of text that should align with a graphic and use the Space Above of each blank paragraph to have it align with the graphic.
    I'm not even sure what to search to try and solve this. I looked briefly into compound paths, but that didn't look like it would help.
    I hope this is clear and thank you for any assistance at all.
    Andrea

    No problem. Click your cursor somewhere in the paragraph that ought to be aligned with the next image down, then run this Javascript.
    It's not entirely accurate, as it uses the font size to do a minimal adjustment where it actually should use the font's cap height -- but you cannot get to that through scripting. This final adjustment is necessary because ID does know the baseline, and your first line ought to dip just below this to have the top of the first line aligned to the top of the image.
    //DESCRIPTION:Align paragraph with image.

                   dist = Math.abs(img[i].geometricBounds[0] - ypos);
                   nearest = img[i];
         if (nearest == null)
              alert ("no image found nearby!");
         else
              prevm = app.activeDocument.viewPreferences.verticalMeasurementUnits;
              app.activeDocument.viewPreferences.verticalMeasurementUnits = MeasurementUnits.POINTS;
              top = nearest.geometricBounds[0];
              ypos = app.selection[0].paragraphs[0].lines[0].baseline;
              if (ypos < top)
                   app.selection[0].paragraphs[0].spaceBefore = top-app.selection[0].pointSize-app.selection[0].parentStory.paragraphs.previousItem(app.selection[0].paragraphs[0]).lines[-1].baseline;
              app.activeDocument.viewPreferences.verticalMeasurementUnits = prevm;
    This image shows three paragraphs aligned with their respective images (it won't work on the first paragraph, but that ought not to be necessary anyhoo).

  • InDesign Text Render Issues

    When using the cloud version of adobe Indesign, my text is coming out pixelated after I render it. In the past I have used CS4, CS5, and CS6 and never had this problem. Is this a bug I can get a fix for? I already checked the forums and none of the advice seems to be helping.

    That means the text is overset. Likely causes are either it's set to align to the baseline grid and there is no grid line in the are of the box, or more likely there is something else on the page next the text frame and there is text wrap applied to that (did you put a full page background in, for example?).
