Cs4 to cs5.5, is CSS improved?

Hi,
I'm about to design our site from tables to css, and spend some time learning how to do it.
I tried a few years ago to use CSS with CS4 Web Standard suit to use it and it got too hard.. my fault.
My question is purely about CSS funtionality, has much changed from CS4 to CS5.5?
Thanks all
cheers
Dave

Hi
My question is purely about CSS funtionality, has much changed from CS4 to CS5.5?
The code hinting, etc. now contains the css3 properties and the ability to 'hide' selected portions of css code, but if you mean will it help you more than in CS4 then my answer would have to be no.

  • CS3 script runs slow with CS4 and CS5

I have written a table transformation script for InDesign CS3, which formats an imported Excel table.
With InDesign CS3 the script runs well. Now I tried the same script with InDesign CS4 and CS5 and it runs very slow. It's about 10 times slower than with CS3.
I tried to turn off redrawing, but this didn't help. It even got slower again!
Does someone has made similar experiences? Could you solve the performance issue?
Do scripts in CS4/CS5 generally run slower than in CS3?
Does CS4 differ so much to CS3 that the script runs 10 times slower?
What can I do to improve the execution performance?
Thanks for any tips / advices etc.

I now have made some tests with profile / timing. Here are the results.
you find the code snipped below. It iterates first over all rows and then over all cells inside of the row. In the cell iteration, the function hasGapInLineBelow(...) does more iterations.
The example is with a table of 42 rows and 9 cells.
    I have compared CS3 and CS5
    there are 3 test cases:
for 1/1 means: first for-loop is in iteration 1 and second for loop is in iteration 1 (statements for first row and first cell done)
for 1/9 means: first for-loop is in iteration 1 and second for loop is in iteration 9 (statements for first row and all 9 cells of the row done)
for 2/9 means: first for-loop is in iteration 2 and second for loop is in iteration 2 (statements for second row and all 9 cells of the row done)
it's strange that normal variable assignments take lot of time (like the statement startPos = indexLeftNeightbourOfCurrentCell;) -> I don't understand why this can be so time consuming!?!
it's also strange why in "for 1/9" and "for 2/9" variable assignments take much longer than in "for 1/1"...
could I use another data type than array for the variable isMergedRow? Which one?
do you know any performance optimizations?
in which time unit ExtendScript Toolkit shows the measured periods?
how are the times calculated in loops? Are these the times sumed up over all iterations or is it just the time for a single statement?

  • Conversion from CS4 to CS5

    Greetings:
I'm thinking of pulling the trigger on a CS5 upgrade. I use PrPro CS4 and Encore CS4. In general, I edit AVCHD video in a PrPro project with multiple sequences. I dynamically link these into my Encore projects with multiple timelines, build my menus, wire it up and build DVD's and BluRays. I should mention that my menu buttons and thumbnails are also designed by me and imported from Photo Shop. I do this because I am a nerd and if there's a choice to be made between picking from a library of pre-cooked items and designing the items myself from scratch, I will always opt for the latter.
I am about 1/2 way through a project right now and do not expect to be done for another 6 weeks or so but I'm enticed by the claims of performance improvements and the prospect of writing AVCHD directly to BluRay without transcoding.
My question then: Will my PrPro and Encore projects from CS4 port smoothly into CS5 of same? Anything I should watch out for?
My system was updated in January:
HP Pavillion with Windows 7 Home x64
    1 TByte HD
    8 GB Memory
ATI Radeon 3650 with 1GB memory
    Should I?
    All opinions welcome.
    Thanks,

For Premiere CS5 at least, the best way to answer the question is to download the trial version and try it.  I have both CS4 and CS5 trial on my computer, and CS4 still works fine.  When you import a CS4 project into CS5, it creates a new project file, so the CS4 project remains untouched.
There are a few CS4 effects not found in CS5 which will not survive the conversion - the GPU effects and time warp effect come to mind, though there may be others.

  • High pitch noise in CS4 and CS5.5

    Hello.
Firstly I want to say that yes I know people have asked this question before but as far as I can tell none of them have been solved. Some have somewhat useful answers but none of them truely solve the problem. This thread in particular probably has the most information about the problem I'm having http://forums.adobe.com/message/4298535#4298535
I recently tried Premiere Pro CS5.5 and CS4 (trial version) to replace my Corel Video Studio X6 which tried to replace Windows Movie Maker. Video Studio and Movie Maker both crash whenever I imported large video files.
Anyway I'm getting a problem where the video files I import to Premiere Pro CS4 and CS5.5 have a high pitch noise in the video preview.
It's a high pitch noise almost like it's getting feedback from something. Also when someone is supposed to be talking there's a very low distortion, like the audio started playing in very slow motion but the high pitch noise is still present.
I'll put a link at the end with the video file that's giving me trouble.
The video and audio are in a single AVI file. The video format is H264 shot at 60fps and the audio should be Mpeg-1 L2, 48khz at 320kbps. I don't know if the video's audio is in 24bit or 16bit.
I've tried different settings for premiere. Trying 60fps and 30fps for the framerate for the project. Trying 44khz and 32khz and 96khz didn't fix it. Using the "Desktop" preset in CS4 and Custom for CS5.5.
My audio hardware is a Logitech G930. It's a wireless USB headset with microphone. My motherboard audio is Realtek HD Audio. Both are enabled but I only use the headset now and nothing is being sent to the Realtek audio chip (according to Windows' sound options). The headset plays audio at 16bit 48khz.
The video file plays fine in every media program I own that can play the h264 codec. With the exception of Movie Maker and Video Studio x6. Video Studio will preview the video and audio just fine but when I try and skip around the program hangs and crashes. Movie Maker just plain crashes when I try and import the video. Some of the programs that can play the video are VLC, Media Player 11, and Media Player Classic.
I'm not sure if Final Cut Pro has the same problem. I don't have a Mac so I can't test it.
Here's a sample video that works the way it should. I pulled a BIK file from a game and converted it to H264 in AVI. Not sure what it's audio format is.

Just click the download button at the top right.
Here's an afflicted file. Not the exact specific file I have been talking about, but it has the same codecs. This one is shorter in length and smaller in size. It still has the high pitch noise, but since there is no one talking in this you don't hear the weird low pitch distortions.

-Insignia camera uses H.264 to either AVI... SOME to MOV wrapper
-so use the MOV wrapper if YOUR Insignia camera offers that option

  • Copy/Paste difference between CS4 and CS5

Please help... I am losing my mind...
I just upgraded from CS4 to CS5 the other day and am at my wits end.
I use Adobe Illustrator for live trace and paste the paths into an embroidery software for digitizing.
In Adobe Illustrator CS4, I could copy (ctrl+c) paths in illustrator and then open the embroidery software and paste (ctrl+v) the paths.
Now that I've upgraded to Illustrator CS5, I can no longer copy/paste paths... why?  The paths simply wont paste into the embroidery software any longer.
I feel like there is something very fundamental that I am missing.
    Any help is appreciated.

    Hi Larry,
Thank you for your suggestion.  If you can't tell already, I am far from an Illustrator power user...
I verified my clipboard settings looked as the attached image and it still did not seem to work.  I also tried every combination of options and none of them worked either.
Work Flow: I will highlight the paths and copy them, then in the embroidery software when I hit paste, the mouse cursor turns into the processing icon for a split second like it's trying to paste, but nothing ever shows up in the embroidery software.
I reinstalled Illustrator CS4 alongside CS5 this morning, and tried the same copy/paste process with CS4 (from an illustrator file created in CS5)... works like a charm.  I realize that downgrading to CS4 is not the solution.  However, not being able to correctly operate the copy/paste commands is toying with my ego...

  • Is it possible to have Indesign CS4 and CS5.5 both installed on the same Mac? 10.6.8

We have a bunch of recent Intel macs at our corporation.  Currently they should all have 10.6.8.  They were all imaged from a base image that has Adobe CS4 embedded in it.
We are now using a packaging software part of the JAMF Casper suite and AAMIE to push CS5.5 to the end users.
The problem is that we want to keep CS4 on the end user's computers in case of issues.  That way the end users can try Indesign 5.5 and see if it does everything they need to do and still have Indesign for backwards compatiblity.
So we created a CS5.5 install package using the AAMIE tool which works fine.  We then use Casper to spam the package out to a Mac.
The issue that arises is that a few Plugin errors occur during the lauch of Indesign CS5.5 such as:
Adobe inDesign does not recognize InCopy Bridge UI.InDesignPlugin as a valid plug-in.
Adobe InDesign does not recognize InCopyExport.InDesignPlugin as a valid plug-in.
Adobe InDesign does not recognize InCopyExportUI.InDesignPlugin as a valid plug-in.
Adobe InDesign does not recognize InCopyImport.InDesignPlugin as a valid plug-in.
There was one more plugin error that occured before the first one but I forgot to write it down.
If we click okay to them, the application launches okay but when you quit and relaunch it, you still get one of the errors.
Is this because both applications are installed at the same time?
Is it offically okay as per Adobe to have Indesign CS4 and CS5.5 installed on the same Macintosh?
What else should we be considering what to do?

Well currently, I'm just testing this issue.  I just installed the trial version of  Adobe CS4 suite on my mac and then deployed the CS5.5 package on top off it  The resulting errors that I listed above are the same ones that occur when the end user has a licensed volume license install of CS4 and CS5.5.
So I'm still back to square 1 where when I deploy cs5.5 on an  end user's mac, they get those plugin errors when they launch Indesign CS5.5.
I am not sure about the licensing restrictions, I asked my Director and he is going to check with our VAR.

  • How can I open raw files from my Nikon D7100 in CS4 or CS5?

How can I open raw files from my Nikon D7100 in CS4 or CS5?

    Andy,
In the simple and short form, what happens with the ACR (Adobe Camera RAW) module is that it gets updated with regularity, to accommodate the camera mfgr's. changes for their newer models. That ACR works within the host program, such as Ps, PsElements, Lightroom, etc.. At a point, Adobe ceases to support older host program versions. When that happens, the user has a few options:
    Upgrade the host program version
Use another host program, such as PsElements or Lightroom
Use the free DNG converter, per Curt's suggestion. That is not host program dependent
Glad that the DNG Converter works for you.
    Good luck,
    Hunt

  • Printing proofs w/ Pantone in CS4 vs CS5

    Good days all,
I have found that our proof out came out with different.
The file was created in Illustrator CS4 and proceeded in CS5.
    The file includes;
    1. One PSD link file includes two pantone in channels
    2. Blur effect for the drop shadow
    3. general designed layout
EPS file was created base on above condition and sent to our RIP (ORIS) / Printed in Epson7900.
We have tried with embedded images and linked images but same printout.
Then we notify that the color proofs printed with somewhat different different pantone value.
the pantone color that originally created in PSD file has one pantone that not flat color but screened effect + another pantone with 100%.
We tried with opening Original CS4 file to create EPS file for printout and they are printing different pantone value.
Same pantone but different print out result.
My question is is there different pantone engine in CS4 vs CS5 when they print transparence + overprint effect?
what should be resolved to have the CS5 to become more like CS4 EPS output?
I hope I make myself clear on this.
    Is anybody has similar problem?

We are not aware of any invalid PostScript being generated by InDesign 8 (CS6). However, from release to release of Adobe software, we definitely make changes in the generated PostScript (and similarly exported PDF and EPS) to account for new or updated features and to fix anomalies in previous releases.
It is possible that the Xerox FreeFlow VI Design Pro software is modifying the PostScript generated by InDesign (perhaps to merge variable data in some way?) and is doing so based upon pattern matching that works with the PostScript generated by InDesign 6 (CS4) but not with InDesign 8, yielding modified PostScript which is then rejected by whatever PostScript interpreter is ultimately processing that modified PostScript.
Your “mailing programmer” might want to contact Xerox to ascertain whether they may have an update to their software.

  • Upgrade to CS4 or CS5?

The agency I work for is currently using CS3, but there is a debate about upgrading to CS4 or to CS5. Because we work with a lot of print pieces one of the concerns is that most printers are probably still on CS4 so we shouldn't be more advanced than they are to avoid needing to save everything down. The other side of the argument is that the time saving features added in CS5 would be worth taking the time to save files down.
I think it would help provide some insight to hear from someone who is familiar with CS4 and CS5, and any issues they have experienced.
    So any advice?
    Thanks for your reply!

CS4 is not for sale. Only CS 5 is available. Moreover, any printshop worth using should have both. If they have not purchased CS 5, then they probably aren't worth working with. Upgrades like this are part of their cost of doing business. They can purchase it now or a year from now. If they purchase a year from now they will have one less year of work from the software at exactly the same price.

  • ActiveDocument indesign version (cs4 or cs5.5)

    Hi
how can we get whether the active document is cs4 or cs5.5. I need to remove pasteboard items. But i have 2 different codes for indesign cs4 and cs5.5.
    Please help.
    Thanks,
    Sangeetha M

@Sangeetha M – there is an version property for the app object. That will return a string object.
    Try:
    alert(app.version);
    For CS4 you'll get a string back.
    Something like this:
    "6.0.6.622"
Could also be slightly different. Depending on the patch version of the specific InDesign installation.
And there is a method for strings to change that into a number.
    var myVersionNumber = parseFloat(app.version);
    That will return the number:
    6
In the case of InDesign CS5.5 the string will be something like this:
    "7.5.3.333"
With using parseFloat the number returned will be:
    7.5

  • CS4 or CS5.5 are interface iphone and andriod apps  ?

CS4 or CS5.5 are interface iphone and andriod apps  ? How can i do when i make a new web site in DW with support and interface iphone and andriod apps . or we should learn HTML 5 or Wordpress for that ? Thanks !!

Thanks Jeff - ya,sorry, I should've specified. I'm running Win 7 64-bit and I have Production Premium CS4 on the system now. Ideally I would deactivate and uninstall it before I load CS5.5 Production Premium.
My only reasoning is to save on SSD space. Is there any reason to keep CS4 on the machine, other than possible problems with CS5.5?
Thanks again for your reply Jeff.

  • Yosemite - No Longer Able to Open CS4 or CS5

    Mac OS X 10.10.3
Photoshop CC, CS5 and CS4 on same computer - use Photoshop CC 99% of the time.
A few days ago updated from Mavericks to Yosemite (waited for teething problems to be sorted out)- prior to this (Mavericks) never had a problem dipping into CS4 to use Noise Ninja plug-in (depending on image noise - sometimes prefer to ACR noise reduction).
Yosemite always boots with the following message - To open "CS4ServiceManager" you need to install the legacy Java SE 6 runtime. Also same message has appeared for CS5.
Problem is I have updated to Java 8 (latest version - April 2015).
    Any workaround please?

Download and install this Java from Apple: Java for OS X 2014-001
If you still can't open CS4 or CS5, a reinstall will be needed. Yosemite has been know to break these older Photoshop installs.

  • Fontproblems and fontcaches in Illustrator CS4 and CS5

    Hello all,
I've been having a serious and severe problem using Ilustrator and fonts.
As this is a very complex problem to explain, I'll try to make it easy to understand.
First I'll tell you the specifications and software used:
Imac 27 inch running  MAC OS X 10.6.7 with follow software:
    Illustrator CS4 + Illustrator CS5, both installed
Fontreserve (running a central server and macs connect through a MAC-client) http://www.extensis.com/en/support/font-reserve.jsp
So we use an external third party fontsoftware to manage and activate our fonts used in Illustrator.
We only have the required system fonts installed on our systems.
We recently ran in a big issue concerning fonts within Illustrator.
I'll try to explain what the problem really is ...
So normally we boot up Illustrator and we activate our fonts in fontreserve.
The fonts get loaded in Illustrator. So that does work like it should.
But the problem begins when we deactivate fonts.
Font reserve does deactivate them and in Illustrator the deactivated fonts are gone or so it seems ...
After a restart, I only start Illustrator. So our client fontreserve stays closed.
I opened the job I worked on before the restart and Illustrator opens the document and loads the fonts.
You read it right, Illustrator does find all the fonts which, before the restart, were deactivated.
Where does he gets those fonts?
So I started to investigate and tried a couple of things.
    1) I physically moved the fontreserve-plugin out Illustrator so it will not be loaded on startup.
That didn't fix it because Illustrator still finds the fonts.
    2) I physically plugged out the network cable to be sure Illustrator could not contact our fontserver.
Sadly he still did find the fonts.
    3) I used "Tweak Freak" to clear my fontcaches. I also searched for "AdobeFnt" to clean out the cache from Adobe itself.
    This did not work either.
    4) I tried opening the document again but this time in CS5. And guess what? Illustrator CS5 asks for all the fonts that are missing, which is correct because not one font has been activated.
Strangly enough I decided to reopen Illustrator CS4 (Illustrator CS5 still beiing open as well), and suddenly Illustrator CS4 asks for the fonts too?
A minute ago he still found all the fonts and after opening Illustrator CS5, it does not ...
So Adobe what is the connection between Illustrator CS4 and CS5?
And where does Illustrator store its fontcache?
It would be nice to run a script on shutdown te delete all possible fontcaches.
So after spending a couple of hours fixing this problem, it seems that I still don't quite understand where the problem lies.
    I'm hoping you can.
As this is an urgent matter, I hope to get an answer or support as soon as possible.
    Thanks in advance.

You should be able to see what files Adobe Illustrator has open by using the Activity Monitor.app application.
To do so, open the Activity Monitor application (it's in the /Applications/Utilities/ folder). Locate Adobe Illustrator in the list and then double-click on it. This should open up a new window like shown in the image below:
Switch to the Open Files and Ports tab, and it should list every open file that Illustrator is using.

  • Why can't I do batch actions from CS4 or CS5 Bridge now when I could before?

Something has changed in my functions for doing batch actions in Bridge.  In CS5 Bridge I try to do a simple batch action of saving a DNG file as a jpg and closing the file.  When I attempt this I get a message saying 'The command "Save" is currently not available.
I try to do the same thing in CS4 Bridge.  I go to the Tools menu and look for Photoshop in the drop down menu but it's not there.  This is how I do batch action processing with my Windows version of CS4 Bridge.  I am confused about what has changed when I was able to do batch actions routinely in CS4 and CS5 Bridge on my Mac.

Something has changed in my functions for doing batch actions in Bridge.  In CS5 Bridge I try to do a simple batch action of saving a DNG file as a jpg and closing the file.  When I attempt this I get a message saying 'The command "Save" is currently not available.
Batch using tools menu from Bridge to reach Photoshop should work as expected in both CS4 and CS5. If not then there is something wrong on either your system or install.
Go to Bridge CS5 preference and look for the section Start Up Scripts and see if there is still a Start Up Script for Photoshop CS5 present and with a checkmark in front for activation. If not try first to restart bridge holding down option key and choose refresh preferences. This should retrieve the original Start Up scripts again.
If your command save as is not available check the action and see what the save path for that acton is. If it is a copied action from an other system changes are that it still contains the save path for the old drive and if the script can't find it it provides a warning message.
Also check if the drive you save to has both read and write permission.

  • File size comparisons, InDesign CS3, CS4 and CS5?

    Hi, all.
It seems there was a trend for several major releases where each time Adobe released a new version of InDesign and InCopy, average file sizes grew by 20% or so from the old release to the new release, at least back in the older CS days. Has this trend continued, such that file sizes in CS4 are substantially larger than file sizes from CS3, and CS5 files are substantially larger than those from CS4?
Adobe, of course, wants to keep writing functionality that will keep the user community coming back to buy in to upgrades. The added functionality sometimes comes at a cost beyond the price tag. If file sizes are larger in a newer version, then page saves over a network or to a database are likely to be slower, and user productivity takes a hit while users are waiting for files to be saved.
Has anyone done any testing to build the "same" page in multiple versions of InDesign to understand what the effect is on the file sizes? I'm specifically interested in the file sizes between InDesign CS3, CS4 and CS5. To be meaningful, the test page would have to be at least moderately complex, with a couple of photos, multiple text elements and so forth. By "same," the page wouldn't take advantage of new functionality in newer versions but would be saved as a native page of the current version, though the file sizes may be bloated by the new functionality like it or not.
If you've done any testing along these lines, I'd like to hear more about it.
    Thanks.
       Mark

The overall structure of ID's files have been exactly the same for -- as far as I can see back -- CS. No change at all, in there.
There have been significant additions to the 'global' spaces; stuff like InCopy user data, table styles, object styles, and cross references. Each of these add a major chunk of data to each file, whether you use it or not, plus a few bytes per object (again, whether you use them or not -- ID also needs to know where you did not use them, that's why). I think these might be the main source of 'global' file size increase (a single object style in one of my files, for example, eats up a healthy chunk of 11,482 bytes).
For the rest, all new stuff like 'span columns' is a handful of bytes per paragraph style. Tracking changes may very well double the size of text runs -- but 1 character takes up 1 byte of storage (plus perhaps some overhead of indicating its 'tracking' status). Any single measurement unit always uses 8 bytes at least (for example, the left inset for a column span -- even if it's not used, or set to 0pt).
I think we're talking about a couple of K's here (oh -- perhaps a max of a hundred or so), in a file format that has been designed around the concept of "disk pages", each 4K big, meaning that sometimes adding one single character to a text box increases the file size by 4 K.
Your idea of comparing the size of a file created in CS3 against the same saved as CS4 and as CS5 is certainly feasible -- I might try it some time, just to confirm it's purely the extra 'new objects' data that accounts for the size increase and to confirm my guesstimates of the number of Ks involved.
