CS4: Transparent Background (PSD to ILL)

I'm trying to turn a logo in Photoshop CS4 into a transparent background .eps file so I can use it in an Illustrator CS4 lay out design. Everything I am trying still includes the white background. Grh!
I do not want a GIF file. It needs to be a high resolution .eps or .tif file.
How can I do this?

Use the native PSD file with a transparent background.

  • Transparent background PSD in ID

I've got a few PSDs with no background in my InDesign file. They are on top of a solid-color box. Example: a PSD of a pencil with no background, on top of a blue box in InDesign.
Everything shows up great on screen, but when I print it, wherever the image box (pencil pic) overlaps the blue box, the blue is a different shade. It's like the transparency in the photoshop file is creating a fog on top of the blue box, instead of being absolutely clear. Does that make sense?
Are there any settings I should be looking for in the PSD? I'm trying to avoid making a path around each of my images.
    Thanks for any help.

    Bob,
I checked out that link and followed the instructions. Also, reading the comments lead to me discovering that I had to disable "color corrections" in my printer settings.
I am shocked by the result! The colors are so much better! I wish I had known that my printer was messing with my colors all these years.
Thanks for the very helpful link.

  • How do I transfer a .psd file to illustrator that can then be placed in Muse as a .svg with transparent background?

I just wrote all this up in another thread.  I did not realize at the time that the last post was in 2014, so I'm giving it a go here.
I am currently trying to create an .svg using Photoshop .psd file (with layers in tact).  I'm new to these products so it may be obvious to others that the above intention was to eventually place the .svg in some sort of website creation software such as Muse.  Which is precisely what I am attempting. However, I am getting a white background once I place or copy and paste into Muse.  My starting .psd has a transparent background without any hidden layers causing this problem.  To test this I placed the .psd file into Muse and it still has a transparent background.  However when opening or placing this file into illustrator, it picks up a white background. If I do exactly as described above, I still get the same result.  So far I have tried:
    1) Simple copy and paste from Photoshop .svg to illustrator to Muse.  Result - white background.
    2) Placing the .psd in illustrator, then placing the .svg file in muse.  Result - white background.
    4) I have also tried the every combination of 1 and 2. - Result - white background.
    3) I have now created a path in Photoshop from the text layer to yet again attempt the above methods.  Result - white background.
I'm including an image of the object I am trying to place with transparent background, but I have both a flattened rasterized version, a version complete with layers and a third (.svg) with the corresponding objects.  I am completely new to Illustrator as of today so any help would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks.
Link to .psd file "Welcome text"

I was having some difficulties getting the correct dimensions of one of my objects, I eventually solved this problem without using svg.  It was pretty simple when I stopped trying to over complicate things.  I just linked the object to a near by object in photoshop, merged and placed it all as one.  It looks great now.  Thanks for your reply.  You are correct, SVG was not the answer.

I placed a psd file with transparent background on another layer in my InDesign document. The layer below has a color (RGB). When the psd file is placed it changes the color on the layer below. I've tried other psd files thinking something is wrong with my file, but get the same result. I have tried for days to figure this out. Can anyone help me?

Wow, thank you! That was fast. I googled that question to death and even bought (another) book on CS5 and never saw that answer. Thank you so much. You made a very good ending to my day! I'd buy you a beer if I could!!

  • Can't get Transparent background in Adobe Flash Professional CS4

I'm wanting to create a moving object that will be exported into a tv commercial.
Object has already been created in Adobe Illustrator, and now will be dropped into flash for adding movement.
The destination commercial will be created in Sony Vegas, with the settings of (Australian) PAL television (25 fps, 576x720 pixels, lower field first).
Thus keeping it simple, I want to set Adobe flash with the same output format, meaning that the canvas will have to be 576x720 pixels at 25 fps.  So far this seems to have worked okay.
Now I'm wanting to get rid of the canvas colour, just like I have here in this photoshop screen shot.
Judging by the colour palette in Flash Professional, it looks like it can't be done.  I've checked "transparent palette" through yahoo and google, and had no results.  The adobe documentation only details how to remove a background in Photoshop.
Can someone please inform me how to get transparent background in Adobe Flash Professional CS4.  Thanks

As far as I know there is no option to set up a file with a transparent background in design mode.  A transparent background is normally realized in the embedding code of an html web page that displays the Flash file (using wmode="transparent" as a parameter).

  • Psd with shadow and transparent background

I have a psd image with transparent background and a shadow efect (color 0,0,0,100 and multiply). When I import it in InDesign, the shadow don't overprint. What can i do?
This is an example with a pentagon with shadow made in indesign and another made in photshop:

This has been requested for quite some time, and what I've heard from folks who ought to know is that there are some rather large technical impediments to implementing this in InDesign. I too hope that they will eventually deal with it, but it doesn't seem like it will be any time soon.
In the mean time, here is a link to a script on our website which will help with the "place the image twice" workaround:
    http://www.premediasystems.com/scripts.html
Towards the bottom of the page, you'll find a link to download the script (which is called "Shadow-matic").
Using it is pretty simple. You place the image, and select it prior to running the script. When you run it, a dialog box will appear listing all of the layers and paths in the image. You can select any combination to be used for the "shadow" image and the "main" image. The script then duplicates the image, sets one copy ("shadow") to "multiply" (in InDesign), and sets the layer visibility and/or clipping path as you specified. It then sets the other copy ("main") to "normal" blend mode (again, in InDesign), sets the layer visibility and/or clipping path, and groups the two images together. The download includes a brief set of instructions...
It doesn't currently support choosing layer comps as Bob suggests, but that would be a good feature request .

  • Problem with exported jpegs from CS5 PSDs with transparent backgrounds

I've detected an issue where when exporting jpegs from a CS5 PSD layered file with a transparent background, the jpegs don't have a pure white background (255, 255, 255). They seem to range from 250, 250, 250 to 253, 253, 253.
LR3 with same export settings does not show this behavior--it's pure white: 255, 255, 255.

    Bill,
Another very helpful solution and I appreciate knowing how to fix it in both applications. Thanks!

  • Problem importing PSD or PNG with transparent background

    I am using eLearning Suite 2. (CP5 Photoshop CS5)
I am trying to import a PSD or PNG. I am using it as part of a master slide.  It is a simple shape, with a transparent background containing a gradient overlay, inner shadow, bevel and emboss.  When imported, it appears correctly in the design area of Captivate.  However, when viewed in the browser, it acts as if it is an animation and I get what looks like a red color bar spectrum.  I have tried to flatten the layers and I still have the problem.  When I save it as a .JPG, it works fine.  However, as a PSD or PNG, it is a problem.  Seems like captivate may be having trouble rendering the gradient or transparent background.  Anyone else run into this issue?
    Files below:
    CPTX File:  http://coventry.mzinga.com/content/ss/temp/WCMS.cptx
    PSD File: http://coventry.mzinga.com/content/ss/temp/bottom_wave.psd
    Thanks,
    Eric

So, I thought it might have something to do with the "effects" settings in Photoshop.  HOWEVER, I took a regular photo, cut out a part, and put it on a tranparent background.  This file as both a png and PSD have a halo that fades in and fades out.   I checked timing and I have it set to no transition for the item and show for rest of slide.  I did not have this  issue prior to upgrading from 4.  Hmmmm.

  • HT4641 Importing graphics with with transparent backgrounds such as .psd or .eps

I want to use this for an art project for my sons class. Can I import .psd files with transparent backgrounds as per Word, to retain the clear cut shape/opacity of background. Or can I import .eps illustrator files with transparent backgrounds? Thanks.

If you need transparency - as I stated - you need to convert the image to GIF. PSD is a layered graphic workspace file specifically for PhotoShop; EPS can be read by more applications, but is still basically a graphic print format. It might serve your customer needs, but wouldn't be the format I would recommend for general distribution. Typically you wouldn't embed EPS in another file, it would be the container for the print ready document (and the concern for transparency would be somewhat moot).
However, I'm not familiar with the intimate details of your project or customer needs, so take that for what its worth.

  • Why is Photoshop printing transparent backgrounds ?

I have this problem only with CS4 Photoshop, I have a OKI C711WT (CMYW) and for some reason when an image (CMYK) has a transparent background, PS will print it with a solid black or white, I have to take my .psd AS IS and print it on CorelDraw on the very same machine where the transparency doesn't print, I have tried GIMP and that also prints correctly.
Is there any strange setting I am missing for printing with white ink with transparencies ?

It could be that you specified bad settings either in Photoshop or the printer driver -- both have color controls.
(or on some printers, even settings from the printer console)
Without you telling us exactly what settings you used, we don't know.

  • Importing a graphic with transparent background

I have a graphic that has a transparent background in Photoshop. When I import it into Indesign, it has a white background. Is there a way to keep the transparent background when importing?

A quick test shows it works perfectly for me. Created a regular Photoshop document, transparent background, some text on an otherwise empty layer. Saved as PSD. Placed into InDesign CS4. Transparency all around.
Did you, by any chance, not use the proper import ("Place") function but used copy-and-paste to get it into InDesign?

  • How to save transparent background images to have transparent background thumbnails with Photoshop 2014?

In old versions of Photoshop there was a feature that made thumbnail images have a transparent background.  I'm a CC member using Photoshop 2014 on a MacBook Pro running OS X 10.9.4 and every thumbnail of a transparent background image I've created in Photoshop 2014 appears on my desktop with a solid white box background that has a thin black outlined box inside of it.  How do I save the transparent background images I've created in Photoshop 2014 so they will appear on my desktop as thumbnails with a transparent background?   I'd like to continue to be able to replace the default background-less folder icon that that appears on files with transparent background thumbnails to customize my files as I use to do with older versions of Photoshop.

If your layered document has a Photoshop background layer it visibility need to be set off when saving a PNG or Gif file for Photoshop background layers do not support transparency.
Thumbnail may be a bit more complicated than you think. I do not use Lightroom, and only occasionally use the bridge.  I believe Lightroom and Bridge  keep thumbnails they develop for image files  in their library databases and caches.  Other programs do not have acces to  these.  RAW Files and Image files have Jpeg previews stored in then.  I believe most application use these previews jpeg to create thumbnails.  Jpeg format does not support transparency.
Icon on the desktop are not always thumbnails some are embedded icons in application modules other are icon in dll these may well have transparency. However image file on the desktop have generated thumbnails.  However you can create a shortcut for an image png file and create a icon with a transparent background for the png file and change the shortcut's icon for the png file to the transparent ico file you created for it.
Also many Photoshop release ago an Adobe module created Thumbnails for image files in Windows File explorer and most likely system file dialog. Adobe stopped supporting that stating Microsoft changes how windows works.
Today I use FastPictureViewer Codec Package to generate image thumbnails for image files including RAW and PSD files in File Explorer and system file dialogs.
I don't use a Mac don't know what available for your Mac.

  • Is it possible to get transparent background when exporting to PDF?

When exporting a document to PDF, Pages turns the background white instead of keeping it transparent. I need it to be transparent. Can anyone tell me what to do to fix this?
When I print a document I use stationary that is in my printer. When I want to send the document by email I need to combine my text with my stationary (on the same page). In CS4 InDesign this is really easy with switching layers on/off, but I don't want to use InDesign for my wordprocessing, but Pages. In Pages I can add a background, but I can't switch it on/off. So now I use AcrobatPro 9 to combine my text document with my stationary, adding it as a watermark or background. This does not work with documents I made in Pages since Pages makes the background of a document WHITE when it exports to pdf. Instead it needs to be TRANSPARENT.
By the way: MS-Word gets it right: it keeps the background transparent when making a pdf. But I don't want to go back to Word, I just want Pages to do it right...
Any suggestions how I can make this work? Thanks!

    Hi marchaarman
Pages has an odd behavior, it actually puts 2 white backgrounds in the back of its documents.
This confounds Acrobat which inserts watermarks in front of the 1st background but sandwiched under the 2nd.
MsWord does not actually make a transparent background it just makes the 1 white background, or whatever the paper color may be.
If you want your watermark, you will need to add it in Pages, possibly as a master object in a section template that you can eliminate or add as you want.

  • Image with transparent background shows up with a white background in ID

    Amateur needs help.
I have a copy of a logo with a transparent background.  I made the (white) background transparent in PS by creating a layer from background and then selecting the white color in the background and deleting it.  This has always worked in the past.  But when I place this image into ID, it shows up with a white background.  I have tried saving as a PSD, TIF, JPG, etc.  I cannot get it to work.
I normally research these things until I find an answer, but I am on a tight deadline.  Thanks!

I totally forgot to put that in my post.  Yes, I am putting logos with transparent backgrounds in front of colored rectangles.  That's how I noticed that this one logo is showing up with a white background.  The weird thing is that the other two logos are fine.  I did find a different version of this logo and this one works fine.  The one that works fine is a JPG and the one that shows up with a white background is a JPG.
