CS4 trial overrides CS3 default apps

Hey,
I've installed trial versions of the new CS4 apps we use (InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator) to evaluate a bit before deciding on an upgrade.
However, EVERYTHING seems to open in CS4 apps now, and it seems impossible to change the default app to anything other than the CS4 versions. I can change single documents, but I can't change the default for all documents, CS4 somehow overrides this on and on.
I've even tried a "Default Apps" prefpane, but no go. Selecting the CS3 app just causes it to immediately revert to the CS4 version. Changing the UTI it seems possible to change it to Preview, but it doesn't even list the CS3 version in that dropdown. Whichever way I turn, it seems to always go back to defaulting to CS4 apps. I DO NOT WANT THAT! I am only evaluating it, not using it for day to day production. I also don't want to uninstall it (yet), since I still need to check it out further.
Following some tips on the net, I've also tried setting the default apps in BOTH Bridge CS3 and Bridge CS4 to for example InDesign CS3 for .indd files, yet it STILL opens in CS4 for some reason. And why there are two seemingly independent tables (one in Bridge CS3, one in CS4) that doesn't reflect the changes of the other one is beyond me.
What can I do to have CS3 apps open documents as default, but still allow CS4 to reside on the system for evaluation purposes? For that matter, I can't for the life of me understand why Adobe needs to fiddle with this in their own apps as well, why not just let the system/user handle this?
b Any help is welcome, the bottom line is: I want to keep CS4 installed for evaluation, but keep using CS3 apps as default apps for all existing documents.

Aliases is what I use now, yes, and of course it
i works.
Not the first time I've had to use multiple versions of Adobe apps, although the first time I've had problems with it on OS X. I was just wondering if there was any way for the USER to override this (I believe it is meant to be possible, if you ask Apple) and choose which app to open a specific file type in. I guess in that respect, even old Windows (despite all its flaws) versions trumps OS X.
Let's just conclude then that no one knows any workaround for this and leave it at that. Funny thing, it seems that if you ask a question within the Mac or Linux community, the answers you get are sometimes waaay off the mark (nowhere near helpful to the original question) while Windows communities are more like "Do this, it'll solve your problem". Are Linux/Mac users thinking more outside the box, one wonders? :)

  • IWork overrides the default app system

iWork overrides the default app system. When I select a pages (or keynote or numbers) file, get info, set the default application to Pages '09 and click "change all" it does not honor my choice of default application. It reverts back to the new iWork. I need to use '09 for now but I don't necessarily want to delete the new version.
Thanks, Apple for making my decisions for me. GRRRRRRRRR
Anyway to override this? I'm getting tired of "open with" rather than just double clicking files.

Using Get Info to change all documents to open with Pages 4.3 doesn't work. It will work on individual files, but that could be a lot of files to reset.
This is what works for me. After I installed the new iWork updates I created a folder on an external drive & named it "other applications." I then moved the new iWork apps to this folder & renamed the applications Keynote 6, Pages 5 & Numbers 3. I have icons for two versions of Pages & Numbers (I rarely use Keynote) in my Dock. Even with two versions of Pages & Numbers running, double-clicking an existing file opens in Pages 4.3 or Numbers 2.3. This should also keep the Mac App Store from nagging you to update.

  • CS4 insists on being default app (over CS3)

I work on a PPC G5 (OS 10.5.8) with CS3.   When we installed CS4 (the last version to support PPC?) the CS4 apps insist on being the default apps for all things Illustrator, Photoshop, and InDesign.   (WHY we'd like CS3 to be the default for awhile is another story...)
I've tried changing this setting via "Get Info" and "Open With", but it instantly resets from CS3 to CS4.  I've even tried changing it with RCDefaultApp, but still no deal.
(I think I WAS able to change the .pdf default from Acrobat Pro to Preview...don't know why this one would work--but not the others.)
    Anything else I can try?

There is no reason to uninstall CS4! But when you have  multiple versions of an application installed, the newest one is the one that "wins" over older versions. That's perfectly normal behavior. Which means you need to be careful when opening a document and drag it to the correct version instead of just doubleclicking the document.
And set it back to open pdfs either in Acrpobat Pro or Adobe Reader. Preview will not show all that the Acrobat family will of a pdf.

  • Adobe Photoshop Extended CS4 Trial on Macbook

Hi, my girlfriend tried to install the photoshop CS4 trial on her spanking new macbook. However, after downloading the trial and running the installer SUCCESSFULLY, she encounted a problem opening PS.
The icon didn't show up, and when clicked an error message popped up, saying something to the effect of...
"photoshop is not supported on this architecture."
Does anyone know what the problem is?? Her laptop is a BRAND NEW 2.13GHz macbook, Intel Core 2 Duo etc etc etc... So I dont understand the error. Considering it is the right architecture. Anyone else had this problem? Iv searched the forum and googled the issue but I cant find an answer.
Any response would be greatly appreciated
    Rick

I recently encountered this exact problem installing Photoshop CS4 trial on an Oct. 2006 production vintage MacBook Black 13" with 2.0 GHz Intel Core Duo, 2 core, 1.5GB ram, lots of hard drive space, running OS X 10.5.8.
After much waiting on the Adobe help line, I could not even get them to say it was supposed to work on the MacBook. At one point they suggested downgrading to 10.5.4 to be in line with the required specs. I said no will do that.
The installer apparently ran correctly but when trying to open Photoshop, it gave the 'architecture not supported' error which turns out to be bogus.
I did the same install on a MacBook Pro running 10.6.2 which was successful, and I saw that there was a lot more stuff installed in the Photoshop folder.
I finally upgraded the MacBook to 10.6.2 but the install would still not work, even after performing the Photoshop CS4 uninstall from Utilities/Adobe Installers first to get rid of previous attempts.
It seems that the installer is completely broken. If it detects any remnants from other installs, it seems to not even try to do the complete install, yet doesn't give any error messages. The broken install is only apparent when trying to run the app, and it gives a totally bogus error message.
I finally found the Adobe CS4 Clean Script which showed a previous trial install of
Creative Suite 4 Master Collection which also had not worked. Removing that with the Adobe CS4 Clean Script then for some reason seemed to allow the install of Photoshop CS4 trial to execute correctly. The script thankfully left the CS3 installation alone.
I don't know whether the upgrade to 10.6.2 was a required part of the solution or not, but after many, many hours of fighting with this, I can now say that Photoshop CS4 trial now works on the Oct. 2006 vintage MacBook.
And to Adobe I say, please fix your installer so that when I say install, it installs, and forget the trying to be so smart. At least give an option to force overwriting of previous remnants so you can be sure the install has installed everything up to date.
And please give some better error messages, particularly when it doesn't install required parts.

  • Travails on CS4 Trials

Since I recently upgraded my HW , it seemed appropriate to try CS4 again. That turned out to be a real exercise!
First off, I get an 0x50 Stop message as I was beginning to configure Bridge, when I did a quick exit to see what I set up in PS. It never happened again so I went on. The Stop messages now changed to 0x08E. Careful inspection of the message ID'd NV4_disp.dll, the nVidia driver which I updated when I configured the new installation. CS3 Bridge has no problem with it, but CS4 does. Since it is a BSOD continually, I rolled back the driver. Now, Bridge runs ok, CS4 still runs OpenGL, but now CS$ appears not to really like that driver as I get erratic behavior like when moving the Window after engaging Float all Windows (I hate the default opening!) the image disappears unless I open something else or after moving it around for a while and clicking like mad, I get the image back and it is stable.
The second problem so far is the CS4 Bridge icon in the startup tray. If that is lit, I cannot open CS3 Bridge. Photoshop opens ok, but in order to open Bridge CS3, I have to exit CS4 Bridge first, which, incidentally is how I got the 0x08E stop! There is no way to permanently eliminate it from showing up because if you open CS4 Bridge at all, it sets the Startup icon no matter how Bridge  (and msconfig) is configured.
Since I also have BSOD when I installed CS3 (see http://forums.adobe.com/thread/540226?tstart=60), which also was traced to starup problems, I can only conclude that for my system outlined in the link, inadequacies have crept in for older programs running on newer platforms, and some older peripherals as well.
I have all the updates to CS4 and ACR.
On a positive note, CS4 Trial installed without a hitch and fast, around 5 minutes or so, which was nice to see. Also, my complaint with the brush disappearing in cerain color and values seems to have abated.
I guess I am stuck with CS3 for the forseeable future. That's not too bad, and hopefully, CS5 will cover all these bases nicely.

Been there Done that. Makes matters worse.
From what I can see, it seems to have to do with redraw, because as I decrease the acceleration, now it only redraws part of the image, tiling from top to bottom. Not all the tiles are present. If I drop to basic acceleration (one step above minimum) nothing redraws except box outlines.
On another front, I mentioned the Bridge Startup problems. I have been looking at that too, and neither will open if the other already is. So I went into the prefs on both, had only Bridge and Photoshop checked in CS3, and most checked in CS4. So I picked only Bridge and PS there also.
    Problem went away.
But hold on! There's more! Now if Bridge 4 is running and minimized, opening CS3 Bridge maximizes CS4 and doesn't open.If CS3 is open, nothing happens trying CS4. It doesn't maximize a minimized CS3 either.
There's still more! Now enabling everything or most everything in CS4 Bridge does not restore the problem. I may consider the update again.
This all can have roots in the video I suppose, but since I am going to wait for CS5 and Win7 and a real computer update, I'll have to wait for then. By that time, advances on all fronts are to be expected; a new video card is in the budget, but I haven't the foggiest which one!
On second thought, I don't want BSOD again so forget the update to the video.

  • How can I edit a CS4 doc in CS3?

A client's sent me an InDesign CS4 doc to edit and then return back to them. I have CS3 and can't open it because it needs me to install loads of plugins or upgrade to CS4. CS4 is no longer available. If I buy CS5, and edit it using CS5, the client using CS4 won't be able to open it. Any solutions?

Either have them exprt the file to .inx for you (not ideal) or download the CS4 trial and use it for 30 days and make sure you finish in that time. You can get that here: Download Adobe CS4 and CS3 Free Trials Here (incl. After Effects) | ProDesignTools
Make sure you follow the directions on that page TO THE LETTER or it won't work.

  • Photoshop CS4 Trial  installation asking for disc again and again

I had to uninstall my Creative Suite CS3 because of licensing problems. Then I could not reinstall it on Vista Home Premium SP2 ("unsupported OS").
Now, as long as I am waiting for Adobe to respond to my case, I tried to install CS4 Trial versions of PS and DW, so I can go on working.
    But:
Whether I install them from a HDD or from a CD/DVD, it always asks me to insert the disc again into the related drive. Of course it is already in - installation has to be aborted.
I am very hesitant to purchase the CS4 upgrade, since it seems that after their huge hassle with the CS3 suite they still haven't their product installation problems fixed.
    Anybody had fixed this?
    Thanks
    Matt

    Hi dec9 and the_wine_snob,
Have tried all these too, and went a bit further with copying the folder to the desktop, but it also ended with a fatal.
Since the origin of my trouble is the endless hassle with my CS3 Suite installation, I ordered a CS4 Premium Web Trial and see if that installs.
Don't want to risk paying for another uninstallable product.
Before I install that, I will:
    - uninstall all Adobe products
    - including all flash versions that might still be lingering around
    - run the CS3 cleaner
    - clean and defrag the drive
    - brush my teeth
    -... anything else?
    Thanks

  • Error 2 when installing Fireworks CS4 Trial?

Hey, I keep getting the Error: Error 2 when ever I try to install Fireworks CS4 Trial, downloaded from Adobe.
    Installing: Adobe Fireworks CS4
    Adobe Exstention Manager CS4
After its pretty much done, it say's finished but with Error's, hit view info, and I keep getting Error 2.
Tried dowloading the trial from other sites, and that still doesnt work.
All my Adobe products of CS3 have been uninstalled.
    Problem help?

    Fixed it!  Yay
I've got to say - I owe it all to a guy called Justducky on macosx.com.  Still, here's the story.  After search around I found his post about a similar problem with Dreamweaver.  He dug, and delved and worked on permissions etc but nothing worked.
Finally he got down to the solution:
Uninstall everything Adobe.  I mean everything.  AIR, flashplayers if you can.  Everything.  Delete .plist and .pref files that have adobe in the name (carefully).
Create a new account that has admin privileges (not convinced this was necessary but don't know Macs enough to confirm)
Safe Boot and log into the new account
    Install Fireworks.
And there you go, it works.  Simple eh?  As an extra precaution when installing Fireworks I only did the bear minimum.  I didn't install Air, Media Player, Bridge etc.  I have done now and they work.
You can read the full account of JustDucky's journey here
Hope this works for you too!

  • Files lose Default App preferences

Mac Pro Dual 2.6, 5 gb RAM, OS 10.1.11, CS4.
These are the steps I take to set the default app for PSD, tif, and jpegs.  Selected a file/Get Info/Open with/CS4/Change All/"Are you sure you want to change all similar documents to open with the application "Adobe Photoshop CS4.app"?"/Continue.  This works fine until I shut downt the computer.  When I restart the OS has gone back to it's defaults and made the "default app" Preview.  In order to get the PSD, tif, or jpeg files to recognize CS4 as the default app, I have to go through the previous process again.
What is am I doing wrong or how to do stop this from happeing?
    Thanks,
    Kim

Odd that it didn't work before.  All that Cocktail option does is to delete the "com.apple.LaunchServices.plist" and reboot your machine.
Are you sure you rebooted after deleting the file manually early?

  • Edit Original...Smoked by PS CS4 Trial Uninstall

I don't know if anyone else has experienced this or knows a fix other than re-install of CS3.
Owning CS3 Design Premium, but being a regular follower of the Photoshop U2U forum, I needed to see for myself whether Photoshop CS4 would run on my system, so logically, I installed the free trial. FWIW, with a display driver update, PS CS4 ran nicely, but regardless, I'm not in a position to purchase the suite upgrade at this time. The trial's run out, and I uninstalled it this morning. While the PS CS4 trial was active, ID CS3's Edit Original command launched or switched to it, rather than PS CS3. I didn't fuss much about that, welcoming the CS4-familiarizing exercise. But now, with it uninstalled, ID's Edit Original is disabled...doesn't even show on the context, (rt-click), menu, and Links panel button is dead.
Any thoughts on getting it back?
PS: Trashing prefs didn't work. Needless to say, I was thrilled.

When you uninstalled it removed the file associations from Windows, which is what tells ID where to send the file for editing.
Open Explorer, Click the view menu, then Folder Options > File Types tab. If the file type (extension) is still in the list, click on it, then click the Change button below to set a new program (Photoshop) to open it. Repeat for all the types you want Photoshop to open.
If the type is not in the list, click the "new" button and add it.

  • CS4 upgrade from CS3

    Hallo,
Hope this is the right place to post this.
I have Encore CS3 installed now. I am not sure if it is worth for me to upgrade to CS4.
I mostly use the flash export to web from encore. Will I get much more in this function in CS4 compared to CS3?
I tried to install the trial, but apparently only Premiere works as trial :-(
    Thanks in advance.
    /Ulf

    >I mostly use the flash export to web from encore. Will I get much more in this function in CS4 compared to CS3
It all depends on what you mean by "much" more, but yes, I think so.
You get a much larger selection of output settings for Flash, including several widescreen resolutions, and you can export streaming video for use if you have a Flash Media Server (Encore CS3 can only export progressive download). You can also choose to export F4V (H.264 for for higher quality video, but requiring Flash Player 10 - Encore CS3 only exports FLV) It's also easier to set a link to a web page than it was in Encore CS3.
If these features aren't very important to you, then little else has changed in Encore CS4 Flash export.

  • Uninstalling CS4 trial

    Hello,
I would like to uninstall Adobe CS4 trial without damaging any CS3 files. (I would really like to not have to re-install) I know many people have had problems uninstalling CS3 after installing CS4, so I'd like to know what steps I can take to ensure the safety of my CS3 programs.
    Help is much appreciated.

    Update to original post:
SOMETIMES PSE7 will send a file(image) to Photoshop CS3 for editing, but not always. Thought for a while that it was affected by file type, ie would send .jpg, but not TIFF. So erratic it's not possible to really say.
    Anyone got any suggestions???????
I really rely on Elements as my organizer because it helps me keep the original files unaltered. Got to get this fixed.
Must have lost some common files, or other interface stuff when I uninstalled CS4 Trial.
    Thanks

  • CS4 Trial will not open

I have downloaded the InDesign CS4 trial from the Adobe website, and installed with no problem.
However it will not open. When I click the application I get the following error message:
'You can't open the application "Adobe InDesign CS4.app" because it is not supported on this architecture.'
I've checked the system requirements and sure I have what's needed.
    I'm running OS 10.5.6 on a dual 2GHz Power PC G5 with 1.5Gb memory.
    Any idea what's wrong?

In the application folder there is a folder 'Adobe InDesign CS4' within which there is just the application file. I would expect there should be more file there??
I've un-installed and installed again - still the same.
Even downloaded the dmg again and done thwe whole thing over again.

  • Flash CS4 Trial Version Crash

I've been using Flash CS3 pro. It crashes when importing images to library. Ran all updates -still crahses
So I downloaded Flash CS4 trial ran all the updates. It ran fine for a few hours... then crashed.
Now Trial version also crashes also when importing images to library.
Error window says: windows - no disk exception processing message c000013 parameters .......
progam then stops responsing....I have a ticket in at support but no answer in almost 3 days now.
    Running Windows XP
Please advise - I have a flash file that needs updating.

It's been my experience that with computers that only barely meet the system requirements across the board for Flash or many other Adobe products tend to crash those products even when performing the most seemingly mundane tasks. If installing more RAM is not an option, try keeping all other programs/windows closed while working in Flash. (http://www.adobe.com/products/flash/systemreqs/)
One little trick that I have found to be usefull on slower machines is to not Import to Library, but rather Import to Stage. Importing to the library also adds the step of creating a graphic symbol (CS3) or a movie clip (CS4), whereas Importing to the stage does not.
Also, are you pulling the images off of an external device like a USB drive or an external hard drive? This could be another - and probably the real -  reason you are experiencing the error. Try putting the images on your HD, then importing.
You may still want to get some more RAM to handle Flash CS4.

  • Flash cs4 trial uninstall - wont uninstall

When I looked at the forum list - i saw no option or forum for installation issues - adobe search results were worse than google's - so i'm posting here in hopes of a human response....
Adobe support has not responsed for the last five days - so i guess i'm on my own...
I installed the Flash CS4 trial - when it expired - I purchased CS4 Premium and installed it - NOW, Flash will not launch, gives an error message stating the licenase has expried.  The twenty two hundred license I just purchased and used for the install - is expired!?!?!?!
So I uninstalled CS4 Premium - checked my registery - and re-installed.......givies me the exact same results - licensed expired.....
Did some research - found Adobe had created a special tool - just for the uninstallation or removal of their CS4 trial software - so, I download and run the CS4 clean up script.... Rebooted, checked the registry and re-installed yet again..............Same results - licensed expired.....
    So now -
I installed purchased copy of CS4 Premium - it does not work
I ran the uninstall - rebooted
I ran the Microsoft clean up - rebooted
I ran the CS4 Clean up - rebooted
    Checked the registry - rebooted
tried to run the CS4 installation again - except this time - the setup no longer runs - setup gets to 85%-ish and shuts down - throwing out a message stating that Setup cannot run. Contact Support.
Contact Adobe Support? - are you serious? they have not responded in five days...after spending over two thousand dollars and i'm unable to run the software...think I'll just request a refund instead.....
Before I totally give up on CS4 - I thought I'd try the forums and see if anyone is generous and kind enough to offer some direction.....
I would greatly appreciate some assistance, Please.
I'm running windows vista 64 with triple core processor (Vista, I know....that's my first mistake)
I've ran the microsoft and CS removal scripts, rebooted
    and now
the program went from not running due to expired license to the setup not running at all
Any suggestions - other than dropping the box off a cliff???
Thank you for your time and attention

I installed and then uninstalled (without dragging to the trash) a trial of Photoshop CS3. Now none of my CS2 programs work. The message says "a serious error has been detected, to continue using CS2 please reinstall the application." I got the same "we no longer provide support for this product, please consider spending another $600 to upgrade to CS4" message from Adobe. Attempts to reinstall have not been successful. Now what?
