[CS4 WinXP] InDesign crashes on opening docs with missing links

Hi,
I expect this issue is more to do with the PC than InDesign itself but I would be interested to know if anyone else has seen a similar problem (and been able to resolve it).
The design team in my office have just been given new HP Compaq PCs with CS4 (inc. InDesign 6.0.4). When these designers attempt to open certain InDesign documents, their InDesign will crash with no warnings or dialogues. The same documents can be opened on other (older) PCs without crashing.
The documents which crash all contain links to graphics on a network which is not available. The same document will open on older PCs but will obviously report missing links. The network is not available to the older PCs either. The older PCs are also running InDesign CS4 (6.0.4).
If the failing documents are opened on older PCs and the links removed, these can then be opened on the new PCs with no issues.
As I said, I expect this is a PC/Networking issue rather than InDesign itself but any help would be appreciated.
Thanks
Simon Kemp

Try changing the preferences regarding checking links on open, and also using a workspace that doesn't include the links panel or preflight. That might be enough to get the files to open, and exporting to .idml or .inx and resaving might solve th problem (for that matter, it wouldn't hurt to export one from the older machine and see if that will open).

This is extremely annoying...  why I should pay for software that doesn't work?

"Enable Related Files" isn't the fix for this issue. It's slightly different - I wanted to still load related files, but only the ones local to the file I was editing.
The fix was to use DW's Resolve To IP Address feature. It required adding a registry value - it fixed the issue straight away

  • Snow Leopard 10.6.2 CS4 InDesign can't open files with a "#" in file path

Snow Leopard 10.6.2 CS4 InDesign can't open files with a "#" in file path using any of these perfectly normal methods:
    1. double-click file in the Finder (e.g in a Folder on your Mac or on your Mac desktop etc.)
    2. select file and choose "File... Open" command-o in the Finder
    3. drag file to the application icon in the Finder.
    4. Select file in Bridge and double-click, choose File.. Open.. or Drag icon to InDesign icon in dock.
If you try to open an ID file named with a "#", you will get an error message "Missing required parameter 'from' for event 'open.'"
This happens to any InDesign file that has a "#" (pound sign, number sign, or hash) in the filename or in the file path (any parent folder).
    To reproduce
Name an InDesign file Test#.idd Try to open it in the Finder or Bridge (as opposed to the "Open" dilaog of InDeisng itself).
    "Solution"
The file WILL open using File... Open... command-o while in InDesign application.
Rename the file or folders that have a "#" (shift-3) in the filename.
Report to Adobe if it bugs you.
This does not occur in "plain" Leopard 10.5 nor Tiger 10.4
Untested in Panther or before and
Untested with CS3 and earlier in Snow Leaopard.
Anyone have those and want to try this... ?

In case this really bothers you: we've added a workaround for this into Soxy. If you enable the option, these documents will open fine on double-click.
    You need Soxy 1.0.7 from:
    http://www.rorohiko.com/soxy
Go to the 'Soxy' - 'Preferences' - 'Other' dialog window, and enable 'Open InDesign via Script'
(Irrelevant background info (it's all invisible to the user): the workaround works by special-casing how Soxy opens documents in InDesign: instead of using AppleScript, Soxy will use ExtendScript to instruct InDesign to open the document - which works fine).

I am a student working for my college's IT department as an assistant. After some troubleshooting on a student's machine that was experiencing problems with Indesign crashing upon opening, I found that removing the "font.lst" files worked to fix the problem.
I am not sure if this student has recently installed a new font incorrectly or is using a corrupted font, so I don't know what the possible cause of the problem may be.

    did you clear the caches?
and onthe off-chance that ID got far enough to leave something behind, find the InDesign Recovery folder (a hidden folder, I think, since Snow Leopard or Lion) and empty it if there's anything there.

  • How can I have a Pages document that is shared with me under my Pages section and not open it with the link?

How can I have a Pages document that is shared with me under my Pages section and not open it with the link?

    Try this.
Open the document and select and copy a few pages, say ten pages.
Open a new blank document and paste the pages you copied into that.
Save it with a new name.
Work on those new pages to see if the problem has disappeared.
If this helps, continue breaking up the large file in to smaller chunks and working on them
You can of course later reverse the process and merge the files into one new one.
This suggestion is based on my experiences with large Word files. Breaking it up in to smaller chunks does two things. First, if there is any corruption in the old file, the new copies might escape that. Second, the Mac is faster handling the smaller chunks.

  • Indesign CS6 crashes when opening docs

    Hello,
since upgrading our macs to OSX 10.9 & Adobe CS6 we have strange crashes of Indesign. It´s hard to reproduce because it happens irregular ...mostly when switching between programs and opening an ID-doc afterwards. Without switching to other programms we can work for hours!
I read a lot in different forums, so tried every possibility i can imagine:
    - new, clean install
    - cleaning fonts/caches
    - deleting preferences
Please help me, perhaps these crash-reports can tell you anything...
    Indesign Crash - Pastebin.com
    Indesign Crash2 - Pastebin.com
But mostly there is no crash-report, because ID isn´t crashing ...it´s just hanging with the spinning ball?! In activity monitor i can see: the system-error counter (screenshot) is getting more and more errors... but my console.app says nothing?! where is this system-error logged?

Try disabling the plugins through the Extension Manager and see if InDesign works as normal.

  • InDesign 5.5 crashes when opening doc that contains InDesign doc links

Hi John ...does this keep you happy?
    Crash report is as follows:
    http://pastebin.com/u/gavalini

Well, if their product was 100% buggy all the time, do you really think they would have shipped it?
Yes, you are actually quite correct in your analysis. Check out the stack trace, which I render here for you in partial form and flipped upside down so you may read down:
    18  SuitcaseResponder::Respond(ISignalMgr*) + 1217
    17  SuitcaseResponder::DuringOpenDocument(UIDRef, long&) + 1638
    16  DocumentElement::LoadEmbeddedFontMatchingInfo() + 4245
    15  DocumentElement::LoadFontSenseInfoForLinkedINDD(IDFile const&) + 802
Suitcase is called (line 18), it decides it is during a Document Open phase, and then it tries to Load Embedded Font Matching Information and then it decides that it has to deal with a Linked INDD file.
And then for some reason something bad happens.
Anyhow, when you say "just tried all that" I assume you mean updating. I recommend you remove the plugin and confirm that fixes the problem, though I'd be flabbergasted if it did not.

  • InDesign crashes when syncing book with Hyperlinks in master

    Hi,
I seem to have an issue with InDesign crashing when trying to sync a Book (INDB file) with page links (Hyperlinks) in the Master.
Ref. Hyperlink panel > Edit Hyperlink > Link To: Page
I've narrowed the crashing issue down to InDesign only crashing when the Style Source (containing the master with page links), tries to sync with another doc in the Book that uses the master in the Pages panel. Thus I do not get a crashing error if the doc does not contain the master in the Pages panel.
For the pages that did not contain the master on the Pages panel I noticed that the Hyperlinks were labelled differently from the Style Source (ex. "hyperlink 1" from the Style Source would be "hyperlink 2" in the first document synced with it (assuming only one hyperlink present).
If I remove the Hyperlinks (page links) from the master, the error no longer occurs for any of the pages.
I put the links on the Page as opposed to the Master to test functionality and they work as expected. Although part of the reason for having the Master is these links appear exactly the same across multiple pages in the Book.
I've tried to export all my pages as IDML files then re-save them as INDD files to no avail. Did the same to all the files as well with "Save As" which didn't do anything either. I then installed the latest patch I could find: Application Version 7.0.4.553 (See all InDesign Patches), which also did not work.
Not sure if this is a bug or if what I'm trying to accomplish should be done differently.
The links in the Master need to link to the first page of select docs in the Book. Similar functionality to how a rendered table of contents would behave.
Ref. Layout > Table of Contents...

I had the same problem, and it turns out that the problem is having the same file into different folders. For example I had an MP4 in iTunes, and the same file in the photos folder that was being updated to the iPad. So I just removed one file and it syncs perfectly.

  • InDesign Crashes on Opening Moved File

I've encountered a problem with InDesign CS3 which causes the application to crash while opening a document with linked files on a hidden or locked layer. I've also found a less than elegant but workable solution, so I just thought I'd share it for anyone else that's come across this. Hopefully someone has an even better solution.
Here this situation: I've saved my .indd file to a particular directory, let's say C:\Brochure. My links are in C:\Brochure\Links. Later, I decide to rename the directory or move the project folder off to another drive, server, etc. So now, I have the files stores in D:\Finished Projects\Brochure with links in D:\Finished Projects\Brochure\Links.
Normally, when you open the moved document, InDesign is smart enough to resolve the missing links automatically provided they are still in the same location relative to the layout file. You don't even get the missing links dialog. It just takes care of repointing the links transparently.
The problem occurs when any of those linked objects are on locked or hidden layers. In this case, InD crashes before it even finishes opening the layout file.
    My Solution:
Rename your links folder to hide your links. InD will open your file and yell at you for having ALL of your links missing, but at least it will open. Then you can unhide and unlock your layers, save the file, and reopen it with your links back in place.

In future, please post your crash reports on Pastebin.com and provide a link here.

  • My Indesign Crashes When Opening a indesign file.

I worked a file quark to indesign conversion. Copy the Text to Indesign Template. After finishing the Document I saved it and close it. When I try to open that file Indesign crashed
    Message appears
"The exception unknown software exception (0xc000000d) occurred in the application at location 0x78138a8c."
    Some one help me?

I am getting this same error - first it says,
Adobe InDesign is shutting down. A serious error was detected. Please restart InDesign to recover work in any unsaved InDesign documents" then it says, "The exception unknown software exception (0xc000000d) occurred in the application at location 0x78138a8c."
It only happens with one file, which I worked on for several days with no trouble. As far as I know, it has no strange fonts in it. I am the only one who works on it. It is based on a corporate template, which may have created some kind of font issue. However, since I can open all the other files based on the same template, that seems unlikely.
I can't open it to rename or export it, but I did make a copy, try to open that, renamed it, changed the file extension to .inx, deleted my preferences, deleted the SING file, renamed RecoveryData, and tried several shut-downs and re-starts, to no avail.
    Any other ideas?

    Thanks for any help!

  • Indesign crashes on opening (Quit unexpededly notice) CS5

Indesign crashes immediately on opening. Several times saying it is corrupted but recently just 'quit unexpectedly' This began after moving all software & files from old macbook to new Imac, Is there a way I can uninstall then re install just Indesign rather than the suite? I brought it in 2008/9 disk format and don't want to jeopardize my other programs, I'm worried the disk might have become damaged with age. Although it looks fine and I've only used for one physical installation so far. I don't know if i will be covered??
    Any advice would be awesome,
    Thanks in advance

Thanks Peter, Since posting the first question I've realised my mistake of not installing properly in the first place!! very annoying... I'm going to try and uninstall and re install the whole suite I think. Does that sound like the right thing to do?
    Many Thanks
