CS4 - XP to Windows 7 ?

Have upgraded (clean install) from XP to W7. Used Windows Easy Transfer...but my DW CS4 application install did not
carry over any DW CS4 settings.
I still have my XP DW files/settings/folders in the 'windows.old' directory. Can I just copy/paste from the windows/old DW CS4 folders to the W7 new install folders...?...or do I have to recreate manually all my extensions/site definitions, etc in the new W7 CS4 installation ?

Windows Easy Transfer only saves and 'transfers' program settings/documents files, etc....not the CS4 programs and/or any other program installation. For instance...after reinstalling Microsoft Office...all my Outlook settings/PST file/rules...all old received/sent emails...and all Outlook personalized settings, etc...were automatically applied to the new MS Office installation.
As I said...the Windows 7 Pro was a clean install...not upgrade to old XP system...and consequently...the Adobe CS4 install was a totally new/clean install...along with any and all other programs...to Windows 7.
Question still remains...forget for a moment the XP to W7 change...if you have a working CS4 DW program on one computer...and buy a new computer...after installing CS4 Web Premium on the new computer...can you copy the settings files from the original installation (old computer) and simple replace the appropriate newly installed CS4 DW folders with the custom settings/site definitions/extensions, etc, onto the new CS4 installation...as with MS Office and \...so far...most other apps I have reinstalled on W7 computer ?
Or...are only my original site definitions "transferable" to the new clean installation of CS4 Web Premium ?

In regard to you question on changing default to always save in jpeg, if my memory serves me correctly, and it often does not, this question has been asked before and the answer is you can not.
The file you want to save may have info that will be lost as a jpeg so .psd is offered as the default. If you open a jpeg and then choose save the default will be jpeg.
You can set up an action to save the psd as a jpeg. Make it a shortcut on one of the F keys.

Regardless, do not do an in place upgrade. Back up data, deactivate software and do a clean install of Windows followed by installation of your applications.

I am trying to install Photoshop CS4 o a new Windows 8.1 PC, but keep getting a message "The Installer Database is corrupt. Please contact Adobe Customer Service" Adobe no longer support CS4 and referred me to this forum. I have already deactivated CS4 from my Windows 7 machine.
Customer Services told me this forum can help.

DW CS4 compatible with Windows 8 or 8.1

I'm still using DW CS4 version 10, right now on Vista.
I need to know if this version will work on Windows 8 /8.1
Microsoft says it does, but a lot of users say it doesn't.
Problem is that I'm changing from laptop since the old one is used up. And I don't have the extra money to buy another version of DW.

There have been successes running CS4 on Windows 8 based on postings in this forum. If you search this forum using terms like "CS4 run with windows 8" you will likely find some helpful information to get your best shot at a successful installation.
According to the Microsoft Compatibility Center it has been deemed to be comopatible, but that appears to tbe the opinion of just one contribution. Check for yourself since it might be a handy thing for you to know how to use:

You need to have your computer looked at for upgrading and evaluate your third party hardware, software and files.
To fix your issue is too complicated and lengthy to go into all of it here, it will require the services of person very familiar and experienced with Mac's to first recover your data and then restore OS X back to a functional state which may or may not require new hardware/software installed.
You can hire the services of a local Mac computer support technician experienced in these matters.
Have them look at your Wifi security/speed, RAM amount, extra storage and computer backup proceedures in the process.

Btw, should have been clearer as one couldn't imagine I meant that 5.5 (i.e. ancient one). The adobe website also has this info: Windows 8.1 compatibility for Adobe Photoshop version 5 which just says version 5.5 under compatibility. So it does seem possible indeed to run this but perhaps for someone more techie. Had a look at the thread re: 6.0 and tried to run it as admin. Tried copying the contents on the desktop and change the compatibility under properties (even ran compatibility trouble shooter under properties) - but in vain. Must be doing something wrong. Prolly easier to return the CD (:/)
If anyone could drop an idea in relation to how/where to buy a genuine and legal copy of a CS5/CS6 I woudl greatly appreciate. I bought the 5.5 off eBay and probably will search for the right version this time on there again. But it's a bit of a question mark for me in regards to how do I make sure that I buy a genuine licenced version which I can register with the Adobe.

Mark: So, if someone had CS4 running, then upgraded their computer to win 8.1, cs4 would not run?

It should run just fine on Win 8. Gets a little more hassel when you get down to Photoshop 7 and below.

Short answer is now. Any app that was developed on
for Windows will not run on OSX and visa versa.
However, You can create a Windows environment on
a Mac by 2 methods. The first, create a dual boot
machine using Bootcamp and install Windows on a
seperate partion and then select which operating system
to boot into. The second is using virtual machine products
such as VMware Fusion or Parallels Desktop Mac. You
basically create a virtual Windows environment that
runs along side and concurrent with OSX.
Not sure how well this second approach will work with
any CS4 app, as they tend to be quite resource intensive.

I am using InDesign CS4 ME installed on a PC running Windows XP Service Pack 3. I am planning to buy a new PC running Windows 8.1 64 and would like to know whether I will be able to use InDesign CS4 ME on Windows 8, as it seems there are difficulties in installing and running InDesign CS4 that have been experienced by some.

Windows 8 is not a supported OS for CS4 and you may or may not get the software to install or run. You are on your as far as solving problems.

The switch should be straight forward but I would start by uninstalling LR 5. This is because there is no specific CC version of Lightroom and you can’t run the creative cloud version and the perpetual version on the same machine. Your catalog and images will be safe and will not be affected by uninstalling. CS4 will not be affected and will still work independently.
Then launch CC desktop and go to the Apps tab. I would recommend installing in this order:
Photoshop CC 2014
Photoshop CC (if you need this to run old plug-ins)
Lightroom 5
If you install in that order LR will automatically recognize Photoshop for external editing from the LR Library.

CS4 Master Collection/Windows 7 Broken Setup.exe

Yesterday I made the jump from Windows Vista to Windows 7 Beta--everything carried over nicely except for my CS4 Master Collection. Upon booting Premiere Pro up, I was informed that my "trial" had expired--a fact which I knew was not true as I own retail. I figured that uninstalling and re installing would solve my problem, but when I rebooted the setup, the installer would install about 15% of the complete package before giving me an error and closing.
After this, I read through some forums and learned that I needed to run CS4Cleanup from Adobe to reinstall the programs; I installed both the CS4Cleanup and the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility (the Windows Installer Cleanup was needed for the Adobe Cleanup to work) and ran the CS4Cleanup successfully.
However...when I attempted to run the Setup.exe after the cleanup, the initial Setup gets to about 80% and then informs me that the "setup encountered an error and cannot continue" and then closes on me. Since using the WIndows and Adobe Cleanups, I am now worse off then I was before! Does anyone have any suggestions/solutions?

Hopefully you were not even thinking about using a beta release of an operating system for production work! Even Microsoft warns you about that! And even more so, you should not even attempt to do an "in place" operating system "upgrade" (something that has never worked particularly well with any Microsoft operating system).
Assuming you were just "hacking around" trying to see how well Windows 7 may work with existing applications, you should have deactivated the Adobe software running under Vista, backed up data, and totally reformatted the disk (low level format) before attempting any such experiments.
Please understand that Adobe does
not support operation under pre-production operating systems. CS4 was released well before there were any builds of Windows 7 available to developers.

Premiere Pro CS4 "Export Settings" window does not show up.

Hello,
I've run into a new problem with Premiere Pro CS4. Basically, when I select "File > Export > Media" my Export Settings window doesn't show up. If I click on the Premiere window I hear the beeping sound and nothing happens, if I hit Enter the Export Data window pops up and then Media Encoder opens. So, it seems that my Export Settings window is still open but I can't see it and make the necessary setting changes. It does not appear to be minimized and I can not locate it on my desktop anywhere. This is really frustrating because I was able to see the Export Settings window just a few weeks ago when I was exporting my last project. I've tried changing my screen resolutions but that didnt reveal the Export Settings window.
Does anyone know what is going on here and, more importantly, how I can fix it? I am really stuck here and am working against a deadline. Any and all help is greatly appreciated!

I had tried all sorts of stuff trying to get everything onto my #1 monitor, with desktop & workspace resets, resizing my display, etc. After reading and printing your post,

Enter,
and then pressing the left arrow and watching my Export window slide into view, I was laughing so hard, that I was tearing up. It would have been a month waiting for my second monitor to get repaired to get to see what was still being displayed on this ghost monitor. Each week, I video and edit our church's service and then post three versions (Windows Media Player, Ipod-MP4, MP3 Audio) of it to our web site. I would have been four weeks behind were it not for your post.
