CS5.5 hangs on file import

I have been using PP for several versions and have never experienced any major issues until now.  At some point in the last few weeks (cannot link it to a recent PP update, but that may be the case) I have started having extreme problems when importing files.  It started on my laptop, then I experienced the same problem on my desktop.
I nearly always import .mov files and have had no problems in the past.  Now PP hangs randomly on file import.  It seems to work more often than not if I import one file at a time, but even then it may stop randomly on a file.  If I restart it may successfully import the file it stopped on, or it may crash again.  It is impossible to import a large batch of files at once, so working on a large project is now almost impossible.  I cannot see anything in this forum that relates to it.  I am running Windows 7 an PP version 5.5.0.  In addition my laptop version randomly shows 'pending' against different files - this changes to other files if I re-start.  If I try to re-link it can also cause a hang.
One other change in my workflow.  I have switched from a Canon 5D mark II to a mark III.  But I can read and edit the files succesfully and play them in other applications, just as with the mark II.  But even with the mark III I successfully imported my first batch of files about a month ago and had no problems whatsoever.
Any ideas?

Update
I have been researching this further.  There is a possibility that this is related to the new container format in the 5D mark III.  This camera now allows high or low compression .mov files to be created.  In the mark II they were all low compression.  The last batch that I created was high compression.  It is possible that PP is having trouble with these.  It still randomly rejects files and randomly reports some as being off-line, yet the next time I connect they are back on-line.  I created a batch of 10 with low compression and they loaded correctly, but have not tested this with a large batch of real files.  I am also checking with Canon to see what has changed.
If anyone has any further advice or experience I'd be grateful.  In the meantime it seems that the only way I can safely process these files is to run them all through the media encode and convert them to mp4 or something similar.
Further update
I am gradually answering my own question here.  For anyone with a Canon 5D mark III you might be interested.
First batch of footage shot on 5D mk III set to 1080P high compression.  This caused PP and Media Encode (ME) to crash frequently.  Even footage already loaded came back with an off-line message randomly.
Test set of footage shot on 5D mk II worked perfectly in the same project.  There are no compression options on the mk II.
Could not convert original batch with ME so used MPEG Streamclip to convert the batch of 100+.  Conversion worked first time.  Import into PP worked perfectly.
Shot a test batch of 10 with the mk III in low compression and they all imported with no problems.
This points to an incompatibility between PP/ME and the new 5D mk III low compression format files.  I'll report this as a bug to Adobe.  I have already reported it to Canon.

  • Why does PPro CS3 hang at File- Import?

My PPro CS3 was working fine until today.  Then I tried importing a file into a new project, File->Import and pPro hangs.  It does not open a file browser, it does not even close the File dropdown, it does not repaint any part of the client window.  The X (Close) at the top right of the enclosing window does not push.  Only the Task Manager will blow it away, and that only after about 10-15 seconds.
Here's what I've tried, all unsuccessfully:
o   Corrupt project?  Blow it away and start a new one.
o   Something went sideways in the computer?  Reboot.
    o   Deactivate, uninstall, reinstall.
o   Backdate System Restore.  This reported that I broke the licensing system, so I abandoned that and re-restored.
o   (from a FAQ on the Forum):  Delete the entire Premiere Pro tree in both Documents and Settings and My Documents.  Delete the entire Media Cache tree.
o   Tried the tips on the Troubleshooting page, insofar as they applied to PPro CS3.
Encore on the same machine works fine (at least File->Import presents a file browser.)  My other activated copy (on another machine) works fine.
    What should I try next?
OS:  Win XP, SP3, all updates.  No anti-virus.

Not sure if you found the answers you're looking for, but my first question would be; what exactly are you trying to import?  Assuming you've tried all the standard rederick...re-installing software, corrupted files, defragging harddrives, etc., I'd be looking at the file you're trying to import.  CS3 being an older product, isn't quite up to snuff with many of the newer technologies.  I ran into similar issues when trying to import files from my Sony camcorder because the little Sony uses mp3 for the audio files...Premiere CS3 doesn't recognise mp3's.  Likewise if you're trying to import a Quicktime format (.mov) and don't actually have Quicktime installed, that can cause problems.  I suspect the same would be true if trying to import from something like one of those idiot "smart phones" (Galaxy, iPhone, etc).  If this should be the case, save the files to be imported to your harddrive first then try converting the files to something a bit more conventional...an standard AVI for example.  FFcoder for example will convert just about anything to just about anything else and it's freeware to boot.   THEN try importing it into Premiere...you get the idea.
If that don't do it, ya also may wish to take a look at that XP Service Pack 3...I've had problems with that on another machine.  It was on my music studio's DAW so Premiere wasn't involved, but sp3 created ALL KINDS OF PROBLEMS on that system...had to dump the whole install and stop the updates at sp2 in order to get everything working again (at the risk of sounding rather paranoid, I'm starting to suspect that the folks at MicroSoft are starting to hose these updates deliberately in order to force people to upgrade to Windows 7 or 8 since they're discontinuing support for XP/XP64 soon).
    Hope this helps!

  • In Premiere Pro CS5.5 AVI file imports audio only - no video.

I've got a file (one of 3) I've been given to create a smaller file (320x480) from.
The file is an avi file and plays (video and audio) just fine in the native Windows media player. (I'm on Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit) There are no issues of memory or HDisc space.
    Video:
The file is 2:21:29 in length.
    720x480
    Data rate 1489kbps
    Total bitrate 1617kbps
    29 frames/second
    Audio:
    Bit rate 128kbps
    Channels 2 (stereo)
    Audio sample rate 48 kHz
    The file is about 1.6Gb
This is one of 3 I recieved. The other two were of comparable specs and similar length (not exactly but one was longer, the other shorter.)
The problem is that this particular file (the other two import perfectly), when imported, only comes in as an audio file. No video imports. The other files import as audio and video. No error message either.
I've imported all kinds of video files in the past with different frame sizes, rates, and aspect ratios, and codecs, yet I've never had one that only imports the audio without the video.
    Suggestions?!

  • How can I Scan into CS5.5photoshop via file import command

I recently bought a new 27" iMac running OSX 10.8.2 (Mountain Lion). I brought over all my files, including applications from my backup disk. I had no trouble running Photoshop CS5.5 and printing any pictures I had imported from my cameras. The Twain plugin that I use is the same one that I was using in my previous iMac running OS 10.6.8.  I had a similar problem with it when I had updated from OSX 10.5 which was solved with updating the Twain plugin. There were some differences in that the scanner showed up in the import command, but could not be accessed. Here no scanners show up at all!
By using the EPSON Scan application, I can access and scan, producing a variety of file formats, but it does not integrate with the Photoshop program. Also, my OCR program is also dead in the water. I can also use the scanner from within the Print & Scan prefernce pane, but this  only lets me get a jpeq result.
I followed all the directions regarding updating the scanner S/W and Twain plugin with no luck. I cannot access the sanner from within photoshop.

You may have to run Photoshop CS5 in 32 bit mode if the Twain and Epson drivers are 32 bit.
Click on your Photoshop CS5 app icon to select it, context or right-click on it, select "Get info" or choose File > Get Info from the Finder menu.
In the dialog choose "open in 32 bit mode"
The 32 bit version should be able to use the Twain plug-in and scanner drivers.

  • Encore CS5 Hangs/Crashes on Import

    I'm using a desktop
(dual Xeon quad core processors) with 12 gigs of ram and Windows7.  I have a Radeon video card and use a Matrox RTX2 for capture.  Regardless what or how I import, I get the import and preparing transcode settings windows alternately flashing.  The import as timeline finishes, while the preparing transcode settings remains at 0% and the system locks up.  It ultimately give me the "Encore has stopped working window".
Any assistance will be greatly appreciated!

One step at a time...  Ha, ha!
I tried creating a new encore file, without importing any video.
To do that, you had to have Encore open and created a new project.  Encore opens the project and does not crash, right?  To do that, it goes through the "loading transcode settings," apparently successfully.
I then imorted one of Encore's menus - it crashed!
When you say imported a menu, you loaded a menu from the Encore library panel?  By double clicking?
Have you tried running Encore as administrator?

  • CS5 hangs trying to render near 3000x4000 PSD file

I have been trying to figure out what makes premiere cs5 hang when attempting to render photoshop file with 3000x4000 pixels.  there are 3 tracks on the sequence(1920x1080 AVCHD).
    video track 1 - looping background (1920x1080)
video2 - layer from photoshop files arranged in sequence with cross dissolves between clips
video3 - another layer from the same photohop file(s) on video2 also with cross dissolves between clips, same duration and beginning time with its corresponding layer in video2.
the PSDs vary in sizes from 15MB to 49 MB but all have the same 3000x4000 pixel dimensions with document sized 10 inches x 13.333 at 300 pixels/inch resolutions.  I had to import psd layers separately and on different video tracks as they have different motions.  But they are arranged to play simultaneous with same durations.
the sequence will mostly be in yellow, indicating that premiere thinks it can play the sequence in realtime and yes, it does, at least for most of the footages in yellow, altho those without colors(no red indicators present) tend to be sluggish at times,
The problem starts whenever I select "render entire work area".  Once rendering comes to the frame that starts the cross-dissolve between 2 PSDs it just stops rendering and premiere ceases to respond to the "cancel" button on the render dialoge box.  Thing is, it seems to happen only on a cross-dissolve nvolving 2 PSDs with either one or both having sizes of more than 40MB.
Can anyone help me out on this?

This is a reply i did to another topic as I mentioned having this problem
"There are 9 PSDs, it can  successfully process some of them, despite the fact that they are of the  same pixel dimensions (3000x4000 pixels at 300 pixels per inch).  The  only difference is the file size of the PSDs.  Curiously, I was able to  pull it off a week ago.
The PSDs were created as posters for an  event and the specs were required by the print shop.  Due to time  constraints  I decided to use the layers on them to be consistent with  the theme of the event(same fonts, styles, pictures), altho each layer  has a different animation(text from left while image from right)  hence  the two video tracks for each PSD.
Like I said, I was able to pull  it off in the nick of time, say 45 minutes before the event (thanks for  the mercury playback and GTX460).  Problem is, I dont exactly remember  what I did, I might have reduced the resolution (dpi or dimension) of  one or two PSDs by a notch and left others untouched.  Premiere crashed  at the next video project so I can't find the right project file that  worked, or it may have crashed before I could save after exporting.  At  the moment I'm just trying to figure out what caused the trouble so I  can avoid it in the future.
I do realize that using Jpeg instead  of PSDs wouldv made things simpler, but I didnt have the luxury of time  to convert, recreate each layer as separate jpg, reposition in premiere  all those 9 files.  My main goal right now is knowing the limitations of  premiere with regards to the hardware I have."
I guess I have to familiarize myself more with AE so I could be ready when the need arises.  I try to stay away from it whenever I feel premiere could do the job or with the help of another application like photoshop or a plugin.
Thanks for the quick replies, it helps

  • Avi file imports into Premiere CS5.5 but not CS6

I'm trying to move a project from CS5.5 to CS6.   I have several SD avi files that CS6 says can't be imported because they're "damaged or un-supported".   After several experiments I found -
    1) The existing CS5.5 project works fine.
    2) A new CS5.5 project can import the files that fail in CS6.
    3) The files play fine in Windows Media Player.
    4) Removing Media Cache and Preview files had no effect on the issue.
I'm running Premiere 6.0.3 (most recent Cloud version) on 64-bit Windows 7.

Exactly what is inside the files?

  • PS CS5 not seeing scanner in File Import

I've upgraded from CS3 to CS5 and PS doesn't see my scanner in File > Import.
I looked in the CS3 PS Import/Export folder and see a TWAIN.plugin, but don't see one in the CS5 PS Import-Export folder.
Should I copy the TWAIN.plugin into the CS5 folder? Or is interacting with scanners handled differently in CS5 vs CS3?
The scanner is a Canon LIDE 600F, and if I launch CS3 I can scan no problem.
    Thx,
    Steven

You'll need the TWAIN plug-in for CS5 (moving the old one from CS3 or CS4 is NOT a good idea)
    http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/828/cpsid_82824.html
    http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/detail.jsp?ftpID=4687
After you install the TWAIN Plug-in, you will likely need to run Photoshop in 32bit mode because most scanners have 32bit TWAIN drivers.

  • "File Import Failure Unsupported format or damaged file" in CS6 but fine in CS5.5

    Hello All.
Recording in Pal DV AVI from Sony Z5U with MRC1K compact flash recorder.
Imported files to computer using the Sony utility, and also tried dragging and dropping.
Some files import to Premiere Pro CS6.03, but others give "File Import Failure: Unsupported format or damaged file,".
The files that do import show up as 4:3 and I have to modify /  interpret footage to get them to show as 16:9,
However, these same files play back just fine in Windows Media Player.
Intriguingly these files import just fine to Premiere Pro CS5.5, and also show up correctly as 16:9.
I can't figure out why some files import into CS6 and others don't....
Anyone else seen this kind of behavior?
(Normally I record in HDV and I've never had problems importing from MRC1K into Premiere, but the client specifically requested DV files for their ease of editing...)
    Cheers
    Mark
PS When I use the DV recoverer utility on these files they import just fine into CS6....

    Hi Jim,
OK, here's the video that imports OK into CS6.03 but that Premiere CS6.03 sees as 4:3:
And here's the one that won't import into CS6.03 but is happily opened by CS5.5 and correctly seen as 16:9:
Can you spot the difference? Thanks for having a look at this.
    Cheers

  • MXF file importing trouble to CS5

I just got a Panasonic hpx 250 camera and its native files are MXF files. They are not compatible with my software, premiere CS5. Can anyone recommend a converter or other fix that will allow me to use MXF files with premiere, something that will link the audio and video files without degrading the video quality, or taking forever to render?  It has been suggested that an upgrade to CS6 may solve the problem.  Can anyone tell me what's new in CS6 that would make importing MXF's easier?
    Thanks!

Thanks Jim, you got me thinking about those presets and I started monkeying with the media browser.  The MXF files import cleanly through it.  I was also not saving enough of the MXF contents file to my hard drive.  Yeah, you need more than the audio and video.  By saving the whole folder,  opening in the media browser and importing from there, seems to be working like a champ.   I’ve never had to go through the media browser before, but I usually deal with only with .avi or mpeg files.
Thanks again for the nudge in the right direction.

  • Quicktime file import failure in CS5 After Effects and PPro

Running a Dell PC with a fresh install of Win 7 Pro, Intel Quad Core 2 with 4GB.  Ram.When I try to import quicktime files into AE or PPro, I get a file import failure or corrupted file message.  I am using quicktime version 7.6.6.  I have tried uninstalling and removing all preferences, then reloading older versions of quicktime (7.2) rebboting the machine, and still no luck.  Any tips would be appreciated.  I have not been able to get any help from Adobe.  I have a laptop setup the same way and it works great.  I even tried loading the exact same versions of qt. and tried to use the Importerquiktime.prm file from that machine.

I appreciate the feedback.  I checked the processes upon AE start and found that the Adobe QT server32 starts then closes in the processes before AE actually loads up.  If it is supposed to remain open, it does not.  I can not find where to change its permissions.  I looked the site you sent a link to, but do not see that section.

  • How do you get canoscan lide 110 scanner to display in "file import" menu?

I have several older versions of Photoshop Elements running on various computers.  In ALL of them, if you go to "File>Import" you see "Canoscan LIDE xx".  when you choose it, there is a great scanning application that runs. On a newer computer, i had Photoshop CS5.5 installed.  It only shows WIA under the import menu.  The scanning software there is horrible.  I tried installing the same scanner (lide 110) on an older computer running older photoshop elements and it showed up.  i then installed a older version of the elements software on the new computer.  Again, the scanner showed up.  Not wanting to break licensing agreements, i just downloaded a brand new version of photoshop elements 12 and installed it.  it only shows WIA in the file/import menu and not the scanner. therefore, i dont have the scanning software/application i need.  without it, this version of elements is 100% useless to me.  can someone please help me get my scanner to appear in the "file>import" menu?  Yes, i do have the latest version of software downloaded from canon's website.

    Hi,
I believe that this is where PC & MAC versions differ.
The PC version  will "get from scanner" in the organizer but the MAC version has to "Import from scanner" in the editor. I don't know why they act differently.
It has been posted on this forum (can't find thread at the moment) a fix for the windows version of copying a module from a previous version if you had one. That is not an official fix.
If I find the link I'll post back.

  • File-import and there's no printer listed to scan from

I want to scan an image from my Canon MG5220 printer's scanner directly into Photoshop CS5 (recently got new computer and printer). Before I've always been able to go into Photoshop, select File>Import and i see the printer there. However this time I don't.
In system preferences i have selected that printer as the default scanner.
I have also installed the printer on my computer with its CD.
    Any ideas?

Did you install the optional TWAIN plugin?  If not, go download and install it.  (but remember that it was made optional because so many TWAIN drivers crash)
And your scanner driver may be limited to 32 bit addressing mode.   Try launching Photoshop in 32 bit mode.
