CS5.5 : OpenGL stops working? Lasso to blame! (Win8)

Hello,
I've been running to an odd problem with my machine and the final version of Photoshop CS5.5 (64bit), currently running Windows 8 and an older Radeon 4850 card.
The Radeon is using AMD's last drivers for the card (instead of Windows WDM1.1).
The problem I come across is that when I start up Photoshop, the OpenGL features work without a hitch. The most used feature is the 'rotation tool'. After a while however, the canvas defaults back to 0 degrees and the rotation tool loses all functionality, complaining about OpenGL being busted.
However, if I have other canvases open, the rotation tool and OpenGL features continue to work in those at the very same time. If I close the file and reopen it, the rotation tool works again. I've tried using different OpenGL settings under Photoshop's settings without much luck of keeping the problem away for good.
Combatting with the issue, I've come to a conclusion that the lasso tool is to blame. The OpenGL works for as long as I do not use the lasso tool (or polygonal lasso). The instant I select the tool and use it, the functionaly stops from working. I've tried pretty much everything I could think of, but each time, the only thing that screws everything up, is using the lasso.
While I'm certain the hardware might cause some compatibility issues (with Windows 8), it still seems to be pretty much a Photoshop-issue, as OpenGL works within other applications and even in Photoshop (in a different canvas or reopened file [without the need to shutdown and restart Photoshop]), after the fact that it turns itself off in a singular canvas when the lasso is used.
Hopefully, someone here is able to piece things together, and come up with a soluation?

Something else occurred to me...  Have you ever had a different brand card on your system?  Seems unlikely, since it's a Win 8 setup, but if so sometimes remnants of older drivers get left behind and can mess things up for the newer card.  I have heard of (though never personally used) a product called DriverSweeper.  Also both ATI and nVidia I believe have removal tools available if you do a bit of web searching.
I hope you find a solution, but don't overlook the possibility of getting a newer video card to solve the issue.  I moved up from a very nice ATI Radeon HD 5670 to a 7850 about a year and a half ago, and while I didn't think there'd be much difference, the newer card just does everything so much more smoothly that I'm glad I made the switch.  Technology in GPUs really has been changing over the past few years, and they're not that expensive.
Best of luck.

  • CS5.1 - OpenGL stops working after making a lasso selection

I'm starting to tear my hear out at the moment. Everything was working fine with CS5.1 on a 32bit version of Windows 7, then out of the blue I got multiple warnings from windows saying that my hard drive was about to fail. Thankfully I managed to get everything backed up and got myself a new hard drive. I had been meaning to move over to Windows 7 64bit for a while now, and decided to take this opportunity to do just that. Everything installed fine and seemed to be working ok, then I tried making a selection in photoshop. The marching ants turned into a weird box thing, then when I panned around the canvas everything looked normal. Only OpenGL had stopped working, it was still enabled in the options, and it still worked fine on other canvasses. I made sure I had all the up to date drivers for my graphics card (A pretty old ATI Radeon HD4300), checked the updates for photoshop (CS5.1 ver 12.1 is what I currently have) and no updates were shown, I've also tried all the different settings for OpenGL within photoshop that I could find. I've searched both google and these forums and found similar problems to mine, but all were from a while back and the main suggestion I found was to update AMD's Catalyst Control Center from version 13.1 to 13.4 as there were known issues with 13.1 and photoshop. But my version is at 13.9 and I can't find a link to version 13.4 anywhere. So now i'm kind of out of ideas. The thing that confuses me the most is that on the same setup on a 32bit version of Windows, everything worked fine, but on the 64bit version I have problems.
I really can't afford to buy a new graphics card after unexpectedly having to buy a new hard drive, and I'd prefer not to go back to using a 32bit version of windows if I can help it. So if anybody can give any other suggestions it would be VERY much appreciated.
I hope this made sense, and thank you in advance for any help you may be able to give
    EDIT:
It seems I was wrong about it being 'any' kind of selection. It only seems to happen with the lasso tool.

  • Windows 8 - Photoshop CS5.1 crashes upon startup. Error message: "Adobe Photoshop CS5.1 has stopped working.A problem caused by the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available."

    Hello!
I've had the student version of the Adobe Creative Suite 5.5 Design Premium software for several years now.
When I received my Windows 8 computer I installed the software with no issue.
Last week when I tried opening Photoshop I get the following error: "Adobe Photoshop CS5.1 has stopped working.A problem caused by the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available."
I deactivated and uninstalled the entire Creative Suite then reinstalled it. I am able to open the other programs, but still receive the same message for Photoshop.
    What can I do?

I found the issue was with the Nik Filters I was using. The filters were messing with Photoshop's initializing. I uninstalled and reinstalled the filters and now Photoshop works like a charm.
It appears this forum is dead?!
Thankfully, I was able to troubleshoot on my own and figured out the problem...

  • "Adobe Media Core CS5.5 has stopped working"

Whenever I try to encode using the Quicktime-H.264 codec in Adobe Media Encoder, I get a crash that states "Adobe Media Core CS5.5 has stopped working". Also I have tried to encode using this codec directly within Premiere Pro with the "Export" button instead of the "Queue" button, but the encode doesn't progress and eventually locks up the application. I have downloaded the most current version of Quicktime, and have made sure that all of my Adobe products are up-to-date. Encoding with other Quicktime codecs such as "Animation" work, but the h.264 just will not.
What has me confused is that we just upgraded to new computers and did a clean install of CS5.5. Encoding with this codec works just fine on the old machines. Below you will see my system info as well as the error "Problem Signature". Any help to resolve this issue?

I'm getting the exact same problem on a similar but older system.  I've reinstalled quicktime, and I'm about to reinstall CS6. Have you had any luck in getting this resolved?

  • 'InDesign CS5.5 has stopped working'

I get this message when I open some InDesign files: 'InDesign CS5.5 has stopped working'. After this I have to close InDesign. How can I stop it from doing this?

Holly, did you search for the whole path, or did you look inside the Users folder for your account? I'd expect it'd look something like this:
    C:\Users\Holly\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Adobe InDesign Version 5.5\English
Because we don't know how your computer is set up, you'd need to use the paths that Manish posted to figure out where your versions of these files are located.
I think I've found the InDesign recovery folder but where do I move it to?
I think that if you just move it away from that location to another place where you can find it easily if you ever need to find it and put it back where it came from (for example, your desktop) then that would probably be enough.

  • CS4 OpenGL stops working after a few minutes of painting

    Hi,
CS4 OpenGL stops working after a few minutes of painting. It doesn't seem to have anything to do with the amount I paint. If I save the file, then reopen I can paint for another few minutes before the opengl stops working. Is this a standard problem with CS4? Is there a solution? Thanks! PJ

I am having the EXACT same issue, PLUS my Wacon PTZ-430 only works for a fewminutes then, when the Open GL craps out, so does it... but only certain aspects. The cursor still moves, it just will not paint. Mouse will (direct via USB) but the tablet won't. If I delete CS4 prefs, then the Wacom works fine... for a while. Latest Wacom drivers and bee on the phone w them. All is fine under CS3.

  • Adobe Photoshop CS5.1 Trial "Stopped working"

Hello all. I am new to adobe photoshop and was wondering if anyone could help me. I have finished downloading and installing Adobe Photoshop CS5.1 (the trial) and when I try to open a picture or do anything else I receive a pop up telling me Adobe Photoshop has stopped working. It them closes me out. I have tried several times and receive the same results. I noticed that a lot of people seem to have the same problem but I did not see a solution. I have contacted customer support and they told me to check the forums and that I would have to talk to a technical support team. I cannot find any answers nor the right customer support representative to help me.
If anyone has any idea how to fix this problem please let me know for my trial has already started and I do not wish to waste my trial days on this. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Deidra6655 for your first step to resolve your difficulties I would recommend downloading and running the Adobe Support Advisor.  It will review your installation log and attempt to locate the appropriate solution.

  • When OpenGL stopped working (option greyed out)

I discovered a weird bug in Photoshop 12.1 x64 with nVidia graphic cards and what´s causing it:
Problem (on all off my PCs):   OpenGL support in prefs / performance is greyed out, no shadow below open documents visible ( == OpenGL not working).  After deleting prefs.psp and restarting (as the www says), OpenGL support was working again, on next restart: no support - option greyed out again.
Solution: if deleting the prefs file or the whole prefs folder don´t work, check if you have a custom workspace with the brush floating panel open.
If so, close it and remvoe it from workspace, restart PS and.... OpenGL support is working again!
I could reproduce this bug on all of my PCs, no matter what type of GFXcard and driver version is installed.
Maybe that bug occurs only with Win7 x64, PS 12.1 x64 and nVidia cards, but removing the brush panel solved it on every machine!!
I´ve opened a support ticket and provided Adobe with screenshots of the working and not-working states... maybe they can fix this with an update!
This are my system specs for the tested machines:
    workstation 1:
Intel i7 980X HexaCore (with SMT)
    ASUSP6T7 WS Supercomputer
    6 x 4GB DDR3 triple channel
    nVidia Quadro CX
    3x WD SATAII HDDs
    dual monitor
    Wacom Intuos4 XL
    3Dconnexion SpaceExplorer
    contour Shuttle Pro2
    workstation 2:
Intel i7 975 Extreme Quadcore (with SMT)
    ASUS P6T Deluxe V2
    6 x 2 GB DDR3 triple channel
    nVidia GTX 580
    2x WD SATA HDD
    both systems running on:
    Windows 7 x64
    Mastercollection CS5.5
latest updates for OS, CS5.5 and GFX drivers...
Maybe this threat helps .... ;-)

I did heavy testing the last days including systems at my home and at a friends office.
In fact, I can´t tell, what´s causing this, but it seems to depent on a certain type of installation. But first the tested systems:
    nVidia GTX480 SLI, Win 7 x64, CS5.5 - working
    nVidia GTX580 Win7, CS5 - working
    ATI HD4870x2, Win7 x64, CS5 - working
    nVidia GTX580, Win 7 x64, CS5.5 (update from CS4 ->CS5 -> CS5.5) - not working
    nVidia GT240M, Win7 x64, CS5.5 - working
    ATI X1900XT - XP SP3 x64, CS5 - working
    nVidia QuadroCX, Win 7 x64, CS5.5 (update from CS4 ->CS5 -> CS5.5) - not working
    ATI HD4390, XP x64 SP3, CS5.5 (update from CS4 ->CS5 -> CS5.5) - not working
    nVidia GTX480, Win 7 x64, CS5.5 - working
On each system I installed the latest driver & updates, rebooted it and followed the same procedure:
    1 - removed (==renamed) prefs folder
    2 - start PS
    3 - open prefs / performace
4 - config OpenGL for "Advanced"
5 - closing prefs and restarting PS
    6 - checking OpenGL when active: pt7
7 - Open menu "Window" and and select "Brush" (or press F5)
8 - docking Brush-panel from original position to the tools-panel on the left
9 - saving workspace as "BrushTest"
    10 - restarting PS
    11 checking OpenGL
Since you have all older Versions still installed when you update i.e from CS4 to CS5 I tried this with every installed version.
On my two office WS I have CS4, 5 and 5.5.
After trying this with the GTX580 with this results: CS4 working, CS5 working, CS5.5 not working - I today started PS 12.1 for working and saw that tiny shadow below the document - WITH the brush panel open!!
Checked it and now its working proper. I have no clue what has changed over night but it did it...
My primary WS with the Quadro card still refuses to actived OpenGL with the opend brush-panel, no matter what I try.... maybe I gonna deinstall that CS4 to 5.5 mess and get me another license for the full CS5.5 instead of the update from the update...

  • CS5 trial has stopped working

CS5 trial does let me download the programme but when I open a photo on screen (which does open) I then get a box that informs me that  - "Adobe Photoshop CS5 has stopped working - A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available" My son installed the program and this is the first time that I have had time to play with it so I don't know if it was working when he first installed it - thanks for help

Another possibility is that your video drivers need updating.  Visit the web site of the maker of your video card to get the latest.

  • CS5 Tool Panel Stops Working

I need some serious assistance getting CS5 working.
When I first load an image (file) in to Photoshop I can use "select" or "Crop" or "Healing Brush" normally. But, after cropping, or selecting or healing a defect Those tools no longer work.
    I have reset the tools.
I have to save the modified image and shutdown Photoshop. Reopen the program load the saved image and again the "select" or "crop" or "healing" tools again until I use them again. Then they stop working.
This never happened with I used CS2. Can you please help me resolve.
Did note that this affects all tools in tool panel. Also, and this is first I noted it, if I minimize PhotoShop after the tools "freeze" and leave is minimized for several minutes, the tools return to normal function with I try use Photoshop again.

  • Illustrator CS5.1 has stopped working

    Hi,
I just bought CS 5.5 and am having a lot of issues with Illustrator.  I was working on a drawing and I was able to save it until I tried to change the colors on my lines and now everytime I try to save it the program says Adobe Illustrator CS 5.1 has stopped working and that windows is going to close the program.  I am also having issues with certain documents, which when I try to print them the print dialogue box won't even show up.  I've already tried uninstalling and reinstalling the program but it didn't fix any of the issues.
Any ideas on what the problem could be or how to fix it?  I really appreciate any help!

First of all I would try and trash the Preferences.
Then check your printers, printer drivers and connection.
    Also check your fonts.

  • Adobe InDesign CS5.5 Has Stopped Working

    Hello,
I am new to InDesign as have been using PageMaker for years.
I have just installed a Trial Version of CS 5.5 and am trying to open an InDesign document which was created by my friend. InDesign crashed when trying to open the document, it gave me the following error messages:
    C:\Users\xxx\AppData\Local\Temp\WER732E.tmp.WERInternalMetadata.xml
    C:\Users\xxx\AppData\Local\Temp\WER8BFC.tmp.appcompat.txt
    C:\Users\xxx\AppData\Local\Temp\WER8F95.tmp.mdmp
I have no idea what do these error messages mean. I have tried several times and the same messages came up.
And now, when I opened CS5.5, it gave me the error messages right away. The only differences of the errors are the WER numbers.
    Any suggestions/comments are much appreciated.
    Thank you.

    Something is really strange.
    Hi Peter,
Out of curiosity, I tried to convert my original PageMaker document myself with my ID 7.5.3 Trial (I couldn't do it myself in the past, that's why I sent it to one of my friends, who has ID to do it), and I was able to convert the PM file into ID file, with only two font errors. The whole ID file looks fine to me.
Another strange thing is that those two missing fonts are in my PC (I am using Windows 7 Pro, and I created the PM file using its XP Mode with PageMaker). When I highlighted the texts that have the msising fonts, ID did show the correct fonts in its Text Identifier box and those fonts also are in the Font Menu (under the Type tab) of my ID.
I don't know if that's because I have rebooted my system overnight or not (I didn't reboot after updated to 7.5.3 since it didn't ask me to).
It seems that my ID has the mind of its own, sometimes it wants to work properly, sometimes not.
Very strange indee, don't you think?

  • PS CS5.1 suddenly stops working correctly when opening another file

Hi, I have the Creative Suite cs5.1 student version (had it for about a year now), and now recently I have started to encounter a strange bug with Photoshop.
Sometimes when I have been working in PS for a while and then open another file, the photoshop starts acting weird, resulting in the file looking like this: https://dl.dropbox.com/u/14462293/wtf.png
And if I try to paint anything, it will look pixelated like in this file:  https://dl.dropbox.com/u/14462293/wtf2.png and if I use ctrl+z after painting the paint just looks like this:  https://dl.dropbox.com/u/14462293/wtf3.png
https://dl.dropbox.com/u/14462293/wtf3.pngthe 2 last named effects will also apply for any images opened before this occurrence, and it happens for any file type.
I have checked my video card drivers, and they are up to date, so that's not a problem (My graphics card is ATI Radeon 5700 series). I've also run a throughout virus scan with Norton without it finding anything.
    Any advice would be appreciated

I have checked my video card drivers, and they are up to date, so that's not a problem (My graphics card is ATI Radeon 5700 series).
Actualyl they still might be. Having the latest and newest is not always the most reliable. According to Noel Carboni, the best driver for ATI cards and any version of PS at this point is Catalyst 12.8, not the latest 12.10. So in fact you may simply need to downgrade to fix these problems.
