Cs5 Bookmarks & xrefs

Happy holidays everyone,
I have a large book being converted to a PDF e-version.
After crashing on Cs4, we upgraded my system to a windows 7/64 bit machine and was still crashing in Cs4. I installed Cs5, and it resoved the crashing issue, and, at first glance, appears to generate a viable pdf. However, while the boookmarks auto-generate from the TOC, they don't link. The cursor changes to the finger/hand pointy thing, but they don't go anywhere. Same deal with all of the xrefs and manually inserted links. The URLs that are auto-generated (ie, have a "www" or "http") work just fine.
My second issue is that Cs5 seems to always want to print to spreads, which is annoying as it does not suit our needs. I think I can find a script that tells it not to do this, but if anyone has a better idea, I am all ears.

Don't go down to 4. Consider v5 a minimum. I prefer v7 as a minimum. v4 doesn't support smarty features. Generally, the higher the version number, the more clever it is at squeezing file size. But really, the single biggest factor in PDF file size is your choice of how many ppi the bitmap images are sampled down to. Did you try setting them down to 100 ppi, for example?
