[CS5] Brush strokes not displaying

Hi everyone,
It's my first post on these forums and it's about a problem already, my apologies for that!
When using any tool that behaves like a brush (brush tool included, of course), the results are not displayed until I do something in the UI (like, switching channels for example). I've discovered that turning off OpenGL acceleration solves this problem. But as OpenGL worked fine in Photoshop CS4, I'm wondering why it suddenly fails in CS5. I'm working on a Quad-core Mac Pro (2x2,66 Ghz) with an ATI X1900XT GPU, with Mac OS X 10.6.3 running. Does Apple need to update the driver for this GPU? Or is there something I need to do in particular? According to the knowledge base (if I'm not wrong), there's nothing to do but shut OpenGL down… Any ideas?
Thanks for your input!
Regards,
Damien
P.S. : I don't natively speak English, so I hope my language is appropriate.

Yes, it sounds like something is wrong with your video card driver.
Until Apple releases a fix, you can keep OpenGL drawing disabled.

  • InDesign CS5.5 does not display fonts correctly

InDesign CS5.5 does not display Futura fonts correctly. I have removed all versions of Futura from FontBook on my Mac (running Mac OSX 10.7.4) but CS5.5 - Indesign, Illustrator & photoshop - still displays Futura as being open but only InDesign does not display the font correctly. The font displays correctly when I open InDesign CS4 and all other versions of Illustrator and Photoshop.  I really need to use this font. What's going on with InDesign?

In your first screen shot , there are 2 futura font ,one is Adobe Type 1 font and the second one is True Type, you might have installed both the type of the font on your computer sometime. Now you have removed all the futura font and it is still showing in the Indesign , also the same thing happened with the Minion Pro , seems to me the font cache is not updating.
First remove the Adobe Font cache's file:-
At the Finder, choose File > Find.
Type AdobeFnt.lst, select the system drive, and then press Return.
Delete all AdobeFnt.lst files found (for example, AdobeFnt10.lst).
then clear system font cache  :-
    Launch Terminal (from /Applications/Utilities)
Enter the following command at the prompt and press Return: sudo atsutil databases -remove
    Restart your computer immediately

  • Brush strokes not smooth, all circles

    I'm running CS2 on a 6 year old computer.
This never happened before, but rather started 2 days ago.
When I pull a brush stroke through my image, the stroke is not smooth.  The stroke looks like it's made up of all circles, and I can see edges as I pull the stroke.
I use my CS2 for coloring my lineart and cartoons.
Could this be an indication of not enough RAM?
    What could it be?

Okay, so how can I change this?
    Start with Windows - Brush.
Click on Brush Tip Shape at the upper-left.
Change the Spacing value near the bottom.

  • Looking for free vector brush strokes (not brushes)

    Hi,
I'm looking for free vector brush strokes. Not brushes, but actual pre-drawn brush strokes, in vector format (looks something like this).
The first few pages of Google results yield pay websites, and I just didn't have the patience to keep hunting for the free ones. Can someone help me cut to the chase?
    Thanks!

If those are vector shapes, they'd need a million points each!
This claims to be a Shape though, and they pretty rough round the edges.

Google Photoshop "Brush Shapes".  The quotes should make a difference.

  • Brush icon not displaying correctly

    Hi folks,
I just installed CS4 on a lovely new Dell notebook with WUXGA display (1920x1200) and am having a problem that I have never seen before. When the brush tip is small (up to 35 px at 100%)  I see the entire circle defining it, but as I move into larger and larger tip sizes the circle starts to disappear from the bottom right, becoming just a smaller and smaller circular fragment until it disappears entirely at around 300 px. If I select the center crosshair, this also disappears around 200px (when only a small circular crescent is left), and then reappears at around 400px (minus any trace of the circle).
It is obviously some sort of display issue: if I change the image size the behavior is the same when the circle is the same size onscreen, so it is the display size and not the absolute pixel size which determines it. This happens whether I choose normal or full-size tip.
Has anyone experienced this? It is not only annoying, it is positively serious, since at certain sizes I cannot even tell where or how large the brush is.
Clear type on or off makes no difference. I have not noticed any odd display behavior with any other program.
    Any suggestions most welcome.
    Toby

This was a very common fault in the early days of CS4.
You need to update to Version 11.0.1 and get the latest video drivers.
You might have to experiment with OpenGL settings in the preferences too.

  • InDesign CS5.5 fonts not displaying correctly when applying styles

    Hi there,
My problem is this - I've set up character and paragraph styles in a document. Yesterday everything in the document was working as expected. Today I open the file and some of the fonts are displaying incorrectly ie instead of a selection of type being bold (where a character style has been applyed) the whole paragraph is now bold and doesn't respond to having the character style removed.
There are no error messages, the program loads, doesn't crash, did go slow but I resaved all the linked files and it moved along at it normal speed - it is quite a complicated document. Other files seem to behave, so I thought it might be a corrupt file. However when I tried to save to IDML  the process was interminable, so I cancelled it (tried this several times and with a simplified file - removed all the images).
I've cleaned out the font caches.
    I  trashed the program preferences.
Hope somebody out there has a idea.
    Thanks

Most likely reasons for what you are seeing is the paragraph has the bold style assigned to the whole thing as a character style (maybe nested without a valid end trigger?), or the basic character attibutes of the paragraph style were changed to bold. Slightly less likely is that you managed to apply Bold to the whole paragraph as a local override (which owuld show up as a + sign next to the paragraph style name).

  • Brush files not displayed when "load brushes" selected

i am using ps cs3. i have more brushes than i can display so have created a separate brushes folder within the adobe photoshop cs3 folder. it's on the same level as the presets folder. until recently, i've been able to go to that folder from the 'load brushes' option. now, however, when i select 'load brushes' only a few folders are displayed within the adobe ps cs3 folder. i can no longer see my brushes folder [the one that's on the same level as the presets folder].
on the screencap, you can see the brushes folder and the presets folder. i should be able to navigate to the brushes folder from within photoshop but it doesn't appear.
this is what i see within ps cs at the same level:
why isn't the brushes folder showing from within ps? i've been using it for ages and suddenly it doesn't appear.
i'd be grateful for any help or suggestions. thanks so much.

i thought this was going to solve the problem but it doesn't. the file path as shown from the load dialog box looks like this
however, when i try to find the *application data* folder starting at c: so that i can follow the path and move the brushes, the application folder doesn't appear under c:\documents and settings\ellie\ nor can i find it using the search command.
here's a screencap of the windows explorer bar. there is no application data folder. i'm totally baffled.
i don't understand what i'm doing wrong or what the problem is. ??? i'd be grateful for any further help. if i have to, i can load brushes individually, but i'd really like to understand where i'm going wrong.
    thanks in advance.

  • Design view not displaying but code view is ok

    Hi Everyone,
my design view in dreamweaver cs5.5 is not displaying anything but all the code is there and my page online is working fine http://www.exclusivewindowtint.com.au/car-window-tinting.html
How can i fix this as easy as possible? this is only happening to this one page on my website.
    Thank You
    George

I have to second  Murray on this.
I will go a step further and say ignoring errors on your site because someone else's site has some is extremely poor advice, especially considering the volume of people visiting this forum alone with a random display problems that are solved by simply correcting the errors found in the validators.
Restoring from a backup may work this time, but why did it work? That's where validation, and understanding what the validator is telling you, pays off. You somehow inadvertantly mangled your table code, will that ever happen again? What happens if your backup also has the same mangled code next time?
Some validation errors are never going to affect display and can be completely ignored from a "how does this affect my design" point of view, like missing an alt attribute on an image for instance. Others, like missing or improperly nested html elements, can kill your design in browsers or rendering engines that can't handle major errors (like most versions of IE or DW's Design View) while everything looks fine in a browser better programmed to handle problems (like Chrome or Firefox).
Bottom line is, the validators are extremely useful tools, do not ignore the  error report unless you understand which errors can be ignored.

  • "UNDO" & "BACKWARD" not working for brush strokes?

After making three consecutive brush strokes in my image:
Click on Undo once, History list backs up one step, but last stroke remains on screen. Press Undo again (Redo) and History list returns to last position, last stroke is still on screen. Click Undo again, History list backs up one step, but now brush stroke disappears as it should.
Or, after clicking Undo the first time, the brush stroke will disappear if I apply another stroke or enter a command, e.g. add new layer.
After making three consecutive brush strokes:
Use Backwards command, the History list backs up one step, but brush stroke remains on screen. Use Backwards command a second time, History list backs up another step, the last two brush strokes disappear from screen. Use Backwards a third time, History list backs up another step (now 3 steps total), and the first brush stroke disappears as it should.
These commands work fine when creating three consecutive layers, then undoing or moving backwards.
I am using CS 5.1 for Mac running OS Lion 10.7.4. This problem occurs using either a trackball, Wacom Intuos4 tablet or keyboard shortcuts. Can this be a screen-draw bug in the brush tool? Thanks.

I still don't know what Vertical Sync pertains to relative to OpenGL Settings. Anyone know? Thanks.
Only Adobe knows the exact implementation under the covers, but what it conceptually does is prevent display updates in the middle of a scan.
Keep in mind that what you see on the screen is sent pixel by pixel, row by row, to the monitor - much as it was done in the time of CRT displays and scanning electron beams, even though today most  have LCDs.
Once the last pixel at the bottom has been sent, there is a time called the "vertical sync" time where nothing is sent, before the "scan" starts again from the top.
Setting the "Vertical Sync" option is supposed to limit display updates to only occur only during the vertical sync time.
As Conroy has said, this generally can make a display seem cleaner, as when moving something around you might see part of it moved more than another part without Vertical Sync.  This is called "tearing" (as in "tearing a piece of paper in two and having the two parts not line up").
By definition the Vertical Sync option setting causes a difference in the timing and the sequence of display operations, and that may be working around a bug in the display driver on your system.  It sounds kind of far-fetched, but it happens more than you might think.  Adobe provides all these options to help work around problems.

  • CS5 screws up brush strokes drawn in CS4

I have a drawing that was created in CS4 and which uses many brush strokes created with an Intuos4 pen. When I open the file in CS5, everything looks OK, but if I try to make ANY edit to the stroke - whether changing color or moving or re-orienting an anchor point, the complete character of the brush stroke is destroyed.
I might add that often, these strokes had a specified thickness defined with their brush that was later altered with the strokes thickness setting (usually made thinner). But since no such corruption would ever take place in CS4 when making such trivial edits, I can only assume there is a problem with the way CS5 handles this kind of altered brush stroke.
    Here is a screen shot:

    Monika,
If I change the Options of selected object for one particular stroke in CS4, the same one I showed in the screen shot, here is what happens. The specifications were for it to be 1.7 points. I had manually specified .3 point in the path stroke settings. If I make the specifications .3 point, the stroke loses all its character and is barely visible. I think the expressiveness of the stroke may have to do with the fact that I made this manual tweak.
Also, I have SEVERAL THOUSAND such strokes in this particular file, and they were based on a variety of brush designs and were all manually overriden in this way (not one at a time though; I just kept drawing with the manual override and it maintained it).
I cannot imagine how many weeks it would take me to revisit them and tweak them to fit new brush behaviors (if this is not a CS5 bug). I really want to take this and other files into CS5 because the performance of everything else is so much better.
I hope someone will chime in who knows what's going on between CS4 and CS5 in this regard and has a solution. I don't want to resort to using Expand Appearance or Outline Paths to solve this - I want to maintain their integrity as brush strokes at least until I am completely done drawing...

  • Why is Times New Roman not displaying correctly in Illustrator CS5?

Alright, so I'm running Windows 7 64-bit and Illustrator CS5.
Times New Roman Regular does not display correctly on my machine when using Illustrator CS5, but Bold, Italic, Italic Bold display just fine.  Times New Roman does display correctly in every other program I use.  InDesign, Word, etc.  I've attached a screenshot to show what I mean.  Please help!

    Hi,
I have an absolutely same bug - looks like font substitute
I had reinstall font family - no changes. Win 8.1 Illustrator CC.

  • Brush strokes show in history but not reflected on mask

I have CS4 Extended, Dell Precision M0, WinXP 64bit and 20GB of Ram (overkill I know). This issue happens most often in the 32bit version of PS which I need to use for certain filters. It also happens in the 64bit version but takes longer to manifest itself.
When I apply a filter to a duplicate layer and then add a layer mask OR of I add an adjustment layer and try to fine tune the effect by painting on the mask, the brush strokes show up in history but they have no affect on the mask. It typically happens mostly on very large files such as those from my 5DMKII but also happens if I've added several layers and masks to smaller files.
As a workaround, I can make selections and fill the area on the mask with black and it works. This is time consuming as you can imagine.
The brush problem is only related to masks. I can create a new layer, for instance, and paint on it with black or any color.
I've also had this issue when trying to use the spot removal tool or when cloning. Again...very large files.
I've entered every imaginable query and haven't had any luck! I'm hoping someone here has a clue.
    Thanks in advance.

Thanks for your reply. I sure wish it were that simple but no....that is not the problem. I'm an advanced PS user and know the workings of a computer well. I've been through every imagineable possibility and now am wondering if my video card isn't up to the task of redrawing the brush strokes on huge files. I'm grasping at straws.
    Thanks anyway.

  • DW CS5 - fonts not displaying properly

    Hi there
I've just downloaded a trial version of Dreamweaver CS5.5 and seem to be having a little trouble as the fonts on the actual graphic interface are not displaying correctly. Here's what I mean: https://fbcdn-sphotos-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-snc7/418515_3338939720865_1489816971_31538 14_2003616853_n.jpg
It's kind of annoying so any assistance would be greatly appreciated :-)
    Thanks

You have a corrupt font on your system that needs to be removed.  See if you can run the font through What the font ( http://www.myfonts.com/WhatTheFont/ ) or see if you can go through and remove that stencil-like font.

  • CS5 - Mixer Brush - Wetness not working properly

    Hi,
I'm using the trial version of Photoshop CS5 Extended.
I'm very excited about the new Bristle Brushes and the Mixer Brush. I think, a nice job was done on these features. However, I think the "wetness" attribute of the Mixer brush is not working as it is intended. I would expect that low setting of wetness would cause the brush to interact less with the underlying color. At the moment, when set to 0% wetness, the Mixer Brush does not interact at all with the underlying color but at 1% wetness it fully interacts with the canvas. There is no perceivable difference between 1%, 50% or 100% wetness. I think this should be fixed in order to enable the full power of the Mixer Brush.
Apart from that, the new brushes are just awesome. It is the most haptic and expressive brush engine I've ever used.
    Thanks,
    DanieL

This seems to be a problem with the Bristle Brushes only and is quite annoying considering that the Bristle Brushes are practically made for the Mixer Brush.  Other brushes seem to use the Wetness slider just fine.  Here's an example:
I hope Adobe fixes this in a patch.
