CS5: Bug with Photoshop documents?

I frequently use layered Photoshop docs in Premiere, without much incident. I'll use them both flattened and as individual layers; if I need to make a change, I use Ctrl+E to open the image in PS, edit it, save, and it updates in the Premiere timeline. At least, that's how it worked in CS4, though I'd ocassionally and inexplicably have to Alt+Tab back and forth between PS and PPro once or twice in order to make the update "take."
Well, with CS5, it seems to be worse. After updating a PSD and returning to PPro, there is no visible change to the image in the Program Monitor. However, if I scrub or playback the sequence, the changes suddenly appear. Once I stop either activity, the original, non-edited version reappears. No amount of Alt+Tabbing seems to make the changes stick. I've found that if I sometimes open a different sequence, the image finally updates in "pause mode" but it's sort of hit-or-miss, too.
I seem to be noticing this more with PSD imported as individual layers, but I don't think it's specific to that particular import method. Anyone witnessing the same?
I am running a GTX 480 with the hack in place, and (apparently) the not-so-good current version of the nVidia drivers. Might this be a cause? I'll test out on my non-MPE workstation to see if there's a difference.

I had imported as merged.
I've tried again with the 8-layer image taking the following steps based on
your workflow:
1.  Import PSD into PPro project as sequence.
2.  Open sequence timeline and view output in Program Monitor.
3.  Open PSD in PhotoShop.
4.  Turn off 4 layers to give obvious visual effect.
5.  Save from PS.
5.  See no change at all on Premiere timeline.
This is exactly as I would expect because there is no link between PPro and
PS when edits are done externally like this.  The footage would need to be
re-imported or the project re-opened to register the changes.
I also tried:
1.  Select one layer in clip window.
2.  Invoke Edit Original.
3.  Turn on/off some layers to give obvious visual effect on image.
4.  Save from PS.
5.  No effect back in PPro even after re-rendering.
6.  Deleting render files still did not force an update.
This is not what I was expecting and is, I think, worth reporting as a
potential bug.
NOT A GOOD ANSWER !
Because I don't often use import as sequence, I failed to realise that all layers are selected on by default in PPro, so turning off layers in PhotoShop doesn't give a useful test of this possible bug.  Please ignore the above results, which I've only left up because some read this via newsgroups.
Out of time now.  I'll do a better test on Thursday.

  • BUG WITH PHOTOSHOP CS5

    One thing I cannot stand with
    Photoshop CS5 is the snap on files.  I open 10 files and I have 10 tabs.  In order
    to manipulate them, I have to drag the tab out in order to drag and drop layers between files.  I had a
    great idea if you guys like to have tabbed open photoshop files.  Why not
    have the layered files I have be able to drag and drop onto the tabs???????
    This way, when I click on another opened file tab, I can see the layer on the file I dragged and dropped.
    HERE IS AN EVEN BIGGER IDEA.
    When dragging and dropping photoshop layers onto other open tab files, when you drag and drop onto the tab, HAVE THE TAB LIGHT UmP.  This way, when I let go of the mouse, I can click on the tab and KNOW the layer is in the file.
    Just thought of putting my two sents in today.

    I know of someone who had this same issue. He ended up backtracking to 10.6.3 and that fixed the problem. There seemed to be an issue with part of the update that PS didn't like when handling so many open files.
    Hope that helps.

  • Anyone else found BUG with Photoshop and Lightroom capture time?

    Has anyone else experienced this or can you replicate it?
    *The problem:
    Changing the capture time of an image in Lightroom and then exporting to Photoshop causes a program error in Photoshop when saving.
    *My environment:
    Mac Intel - OS X 10.5.2 - Lightroom V1.3 - Photoshop CS3 10.0.1 - Canon 20D RAW files
    *Steps to reproduce
    Import several RAW images in to Lightroom (tested using 20D RAW files)
    Modify the capture time for one of the images
    Export to Photoshop using Photo -> Edit in Photoshop CS3
    Change the image slightly
    File -> Save
    You should get a program error
    Try again but for an image with an unmodified capture time.
    Can anyone else replicate this on Mac and/or Windows? Also what about CS2 and different RAW formats from other cameras.
    Does anyone know what is causing it and is there a work around.
    Thanks

  • Bug with selection tool in Photoshop CS

    Hi there,
    I find a bug with photoshop.
    I work on video editing, so I usually create some image with not square pixel. In DV for exemple, we use 1,066 pixel ratio.
    So I create a layer in full screen for DV editing (720*576 pixels for PAL in Europe) with 1,066 pixel ratio.
    If I want to delete a area with 720*576 ratio, I use the selection tool and I select (keep the ratio 720*576) ... but the area wich I delete Is not really the correct ratio 720*576 !! Because, If I create a layer with the object tool (create a rectangle) with the correct ratio 720*576, It isn't the same shape as my old area.
    So I think there is a bug ... isn't it ?
    PS : sorry for my english, but I'm french.

    I have test this problem with a friend on a CS3 version.
    There is the same problem !
    But we don't have the CS4 ... anybody want to test this ?

  • Can someone with Photoshop CS5 please confirm they have this bug.

    Open a jpeg file so there is just a background layer in the Photoshop document. Then in the Actions Palette load the Adobe action set "Image Effects" and run the action last action in the set "Fluorescent Chalk" on my Windows 32 bit machine if fails in step "Hide current layer" it generates a Photoshop pop-up message "Hide" is not currently available "Continue" or "Stop". If I hit continue I loose the layer that the actions was trying to protect by hiding it. I loose the layer because it did not hide and was merged in the last step "Merge Visible".  In previous versions of Photoshop the action worked because you could hide the background layer when it was the only layer in a document in Photoshop CS5 on my machine this is not possible.

    Are you actually trying this stuff, Zeno?
    R e a d   v e r y  c a r e f u l l y...
    Neon Edges absolutely does NOT work on a flat document in Photoshop CS3.
    The terminology I'm using:
    "flat" = just a background - no layers.
    "work" = completes without error and creates a result that looks even vaguely like neon edges.

  • Possible bug in Photoshop CS6 with app.activeDocument.path.

    JavaScript running in Photoshop CS6 under OS X 10.7.5 returns the wrong result for app.activeDocument.path when the file is located on the boot drive. The result is undefined and an error message incorrectly states that the document has not been saved yet. If the file is located on a remote volume, the correct path is returned.
    To reproduce this problem, create a new file in Photoshop CS6 on a Mac. Save the file to the desktop. With the file still open, run the following script in ExtendScript Toolkit.
    // start script
    var thePath = app.activeDocument.path;
    alert(thePath);
    // end script
    Running the same script with a file located on a server volume open in Photoshop correctly returns "/path/to/file.psd" instead of undefined and no error occurs.
    This appears to be a bug in Photoshop CS6's JavaScript implementation. This problem did not exist in Photoshop CS3.
    A similar issue prevents Photoshop CS6 from saving files to the boot drive using activeDocument.saveAs.
    Has anyone else experienced this problem? If so, have you discovered an alternate method to determine the file path or save a file on the boot drive?

    Don't know if this will help much but at least you can use it to check a document's filepath without throwing an error. And maybe tell if the problem is with the Photoshop DOM.
    function hasFilePath(){// returns true/false
        var ref = new ActionReference();
        ref.putEnumerated( charIDToTypeID("Dcmn"), charIDToTypeID("Ordn"), charIDToTypeID("Trgt") );
        return executeActionGet(ref).hasKey(stringIDToTypeID('fileReference'));
    function getFilePath(){// returns path as a string if exists, undefined if not
        var ref = new ActionReference();
        ref.putEnumerated( charIDToTypeID("Dcmn"), charIDToTypeID("Ordn"), charIDToTypeID("Trgt") );
        var desc = executeActionGet(ref);
        if(desc.hasKey(stringIDToTypeID('fileReference'))) return decodeURI(desc.getPath(stringIDToTypeID('fileReference')));

  • Persistent bug in Photoshop CS5

    Is anyone having problems with loading a large number of files into  Photoshop cs5?
    I have a Mac Pro 2.8 8-core 2008 model, osx 10.6.4, and a gtx 285  graphics card and 16gb ram.
    Every time I try to open a large series of photos (not huge files but,  say, 100 files or so) in Photoshop cs5, the computer screen goes into a  flickering glitch and everything freezes. The only way out is to turn  the computer off.
    This happens every time.
    It doesn't happen with cs3, which is also on the same machine.
    Can anyone please advise on whether this is a cs5 bug or perhaps a  mismatch with my gtx 285, or even having both versions of Photoshop on  the same machine?
    Thanks.

    Apple put out an update to fix this exact problem, which they introduced in MacOS 10.6.4.    How is that "one company blames another"?
    Either their update didn't really fix the problem, or there was a problem with the install of their update on your system.
    Applications cannot cause the sort of error you are describing -- only the driver or hardware could cause that.
    Your next step is to report this to Apple, and see if they can help you figure out if the graphics update was installed correctly.
    If it is installed correctly, then one of the major bugs was not fixed with the update, and Apple will have to address that.
    In the short term, you can minimize the likelihood of this occurring by disabling OpenGL drawing in Photoshop (and thus minimizing use of the broken OpenGL code in the OS graphics drivers).  But that will not completely eliminate the problems, because the OS also uses the GPU for some drawing, and other applications can see the same problems (games were affected worse than Photoshop).

  • Can I complete level 5 with Photoshop CS5?

    Not so much a question as a bug report. In Photoshop CS5, lesson number 5 (straighten a photo) doesn't work. The mechanism works (get the ruler and choose 'straighten'), but it doesn't detect that you have completed it because the button in CS6 is named "straighten layer" rather than "straighten". Works fine with the CS6 trial. I'm user "John Hattan", email [email protected] if you need more particulars.

    Mira,
    I'm using Windows 7, and my version is 12.0.4 x32. Thanks!

  • Is Adobe planning on fixing any of the LION bugs with CS5?

    I've been reading a lot about these bugs with Adobe CS5 applications and LION (here's some> http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/905/cpsid_90508.html). A friend had a ton of problems and ended up sending her laptop back because of them (she wasnt able to downgrade to Snow Leopard over Lion with that particular laptop). I just ordered a new imac, and think I'm going to be using my old one for a while if there are all these bugs. I primarily use my mac for Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign, and if they are going to be problematic that is going to be a big drawback for me. I talked to an employee at Apple this weekend, and he said Adobe is always behind the ball with getting their software up to speed with new operating systems. Which didnt make me feel anybetter. Lion's been out for a while now, and I assume Adobe received the OS way before it was released to the public in order for them to upgrade their apps to make them compatible. Does anyone know what the status is on when the next big Adobe update is going to happen to address these issues?

    As to bug fixes, you'd have to ask Adobe that question. I would presume they'll fix at least some of the issues before the next major release, but what specifically they'll do, only Adobe could tell you. Note, though, that most of the issues Adobe publicly acknowledges are pretty minor and/or are present in earlier versions of the CS suite, not 5.5.
    Regards.

  • CS5 Trial bug with pagination?

    I have a book of about 250 pages that is composed of about 20 different files.
    There is the title, copyright, TOC, chapter_01, Chapter_02, etc.
    I want all pages automatically numbered starting from 1 to around 250.
    This includes the title page (which does not actually show the page number),
    the table of contents, etc. My intention is that reading the PDF in various readers
    will have the page number agree with the 'absolute page number' in the reader
    'current page number' box.
    I want InDesign CS5 to automatically do the numbering for me and update the numbering
    for each file (i.e. document).
    I have the footer all set up (no problem there). I do NOT want 'section' numbering.
    [1] The book page numbering options (with no documents selected in the Book pallet) is;
    - Continue on Next page
    - Insert Blank Page
    - Automatically update page and section numbers
    [2] Each document (file) is set up as;
    - The 'Start Section' is grayed out and checked (I think this is a the bug)
    - Automatic page numbering is checked
    - The start page is set at 1 (this should not matter)
    - Automatic chapter numbering is checked
    [3] General Preferences (with no book or documents open)
    - General page number = absolute numbering
    What happens is that each file starts out with its own numbering system
    (starting at one) which is not what I want.
    I think the 'grayed out' check box for 'Start Section' (see [2] above) is a bug.
    I DO NOT WANT TO START A SECTION. I want to continue paging from
    the previous document.
    Is there something simple I am missing?

    I figured it out.
    You have to set the General Preferences > Page Numbering
    to
    Section Numbering.
    If you do not do this then the document setting seem to be 'reset'
    to a non-automated way of numbering - even if you set up your
    doucments to use 'automatic numbering'.

  • Notebook for use with Photoshop CS5

    Hi all, I need to buy a notebook for intensive use with Photoshop CS5 and Illustrator.
    Can you recommend me a good notebook for a budget of around $900 ?
    What do you think of HP PAVILION DV6-6178SL ?
    See here: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c03005298&tmp_task=prodinfoCategory&cc =it&dlc=it&lang=it&lc=it&product=5170932
    Thanks to all,
    Fabio

    So I was reading over your post, and even though this is older and has to do with CS5, I have some information for CS6 that will be relevant to your question now that it is time to upgade the software. In general Photoshop has always been more about RAM than Processing power, though that is important too. Until CS5 it could never quite take advantage of what multi-core processors really had to offer, and even the graphics card didn't really effect much of it outside of certain features and the 3D optio
    Now that is no longer true and Adobe can effeciently use all aspects of the computer to give you much better performance.
    So much so that I was able to buy a brand New ASUS with the following specs:
    Dual Core 2.2GHz Processors
    8GB of RAM (4GB original to the machine)
    Windows 7 Home Premium 64Bit OS
    320GB HDD w/ 5400RPM
    This machine not only runs photoshop CS6 and Launches in less than 5 Seconds... it can run Premier and After Effects as well, and this Laptop cost me less than $400 (on sale at Best Buy 2 Weeks Ago. You don't have to buy something this cheap, but isn't it great that you can and still run Master Collection effectively?
    You can read my details on how to buy a Photoshop CS6 Laptop, what specs you need, comparison between Mac and PC and watch the video of my Photoshop Speed Test by reading this article:

    Saving a Photoshop CC project from a Mac (in .PSD format) to a thumb drive and trying to transfer it to a Dell laptop with Photoshop CS6.  Will not open...Error message: could not complete your request because it is not a valid photoshop document.

    The file was corrupted somewhere along the way (assuming it was still readable on the Macintosh).
    The platforms don't matter, but you still need file transfer that doesn't corrupt files...

  • My student has been using Lightroom 4 with Photoshop CS5 on her Mac for well over a year. Because of the difference between the Camera raw version available to her in Photoshop CS5 and the raw process in Lightroom 4, she has been exporting her raw images

    Any ideas?

    My student has been using Lightroom 4 with Photoshop CS5 on her Mac for well over a year. Because of the difference between the Camera raw version available to her in Photoshop CS5 and the raw process in Lightroom 4, she has been exporting her raw images from Lightroom and choosing the "Render using Lightroom option when it popped up in the dialogue box. She has been doing this for over a year and a half without any problem. Today when she hit Command E no dialogue box appeared and the image just opened in Photoshop. I'm concerned that all of her Lightroom edits are not being rendered to Photoshop. Anyone have an idea as to how we can get the "Render using Lightroom" dialogue back?
