CS5 chooses wrong file extension

I edit a photo, choose "Save As", change the name a little, and choose JPEG as the type of file. CS5 then incorrectly saves the edited photo as "file". This "file" is completely worthless as CS5 cannot reopen it. And, yes, the file extension says it will be saved as a JPEG and, lo and behold, it is saved as a "file". This is a new problem these past two days. I have been saving vacation photos for six weeks and they all were saved successfully as JPEGs until 2 days ago. I really hope somebody can help me. (Oh, I did reboot, of course...no difference.) Sherry

I have never seen PS NOT attach an extension (the one chosen) to a file with Save/Save_As/Save_As_a_Copy.
I think that Noel might be onto something, with the display of file extensions - by default, Windows does NOT show file extensions for "known formats." This can be changed, and I feel it should be, in Windows' Control Panel>Folder Options.
When doing the Save functions (all three), PS will suggest a file name, based on the name of the Image. Even if you delete that completely, including the file's extension, PS will (or should), still attach the file extension, chosen with the file type in the Save dialog box.
With File Extensions showing, what are the extensions of those files? If they are not showing a program's icon, say PS's, then that can be addressed with the File Types, and the associated program for that type. Again, that is in Control Panel>File Types.

IPhone photo/video library glitch - wrong file extensions, name shift, lost files etc [LONG story - sorry]

I have a 5s running 7.0.4. and my computer is running Windows 8.1.
We had a baby and my phone filled up fast with pictures and videos, so I decided to offload them onto my PC. I connected my phone to the usb port, and directly copied from the DCIM folder to my hard drive.
Something happened during the first attempt, and the process was interrupted. So I went into each of the sub folders, and selected all files, and started the copy process again. I told the computer to skip any existing files.
So all the file counts matched in each folder, and I figured it was safe to start deleting from my iPhone.
On my hard drive, I separated all the MOV files into my Videos folder. But in Windows Explorer, the thumbnail view showed several MOV files with no thumbnail - just the generic icon.
As I sorted my photos into various folders, I also noticed a lot of generic icons instead of thumbnails for the JPGs. I started to feel concerned that my files had become corrupt during the transfer. But then I noticed a PNG file that was a few hundred megabytes. This was odd, so I added the MOV extension to it. Sure enough, it was a video with the wrong extension.
I renamed every PNG and JPG file that had no thumbnail to add the MOV extension. Every one was a video with the wrong file extension.
Then I went to the video folder, and all the MOV files that had the generic icon were actually JPG files.
Well I was just happy to see that the files were not corrupt.
One more time before I deleted things from my iPhone, I did a spot check to see that the largest videos were on my hard drive. I found a few videos that were not copied over, despite the file counts having been accurate. So I copied the videos again, and compared file sizes and date/times when there was an overwrite prompt. Most were matches, but several were the same file name with different sizes and dates.
I didn't know what was going on, but I just wanted to get the files on my computer. So I renamed my local copy where there was a name collision, and copied the videos. I deleted the videos from my phone as I went along.
I felt pretty confident that I had all the files copied now, so I began mass deleting my photos.
I went to the Photos app on the phone, and watched the thousands of pictures disappear, and the glorious free space grow on my phone.
But wait... there was still 1 video in the Photos app. I thought I had gotten all the MOV files off the phone...
I have a photo info app installed, so I was able to see the file name of the video. I searched for that file name in the DCIM subfolders, but the folder that had that series of files (the IMG_3000-3999 files) listed the files with that particular video skipped. It was clearly still on my phone, because I could play it.
Then I noticed it was a 45 minute long video of my baby. About 5 GB. So I figured it must be due to the file size that it wasn't visible from explorer. (Can't explain why that would be, but M$ keeps changing crap too. I never freaking know what to expect from them either.)
After having deleted all the jpg, png and mov files from the DCIM folder, there were still about 26 files in my camera roll on the iPhone. And I could still view the video.
I decided I wasn't concerned about the photos, I just wanted to figure out how to get the video onto my computer.
So I selected all the photos in the photo app (skipping the 1 remaining video) and tapped the trash can.
Poof! One item remained, and it was one of the garbage photos. My video is GONE! ^#@*&#($^@Q&%( And no, I didn't fat-finger it. I was very careful to select the correct thumbnails.
Looking back, I know that I should have just started the entire file copy process from scratch when funny stuff started happening like mismatched file names. But I am a sleep-deprived new mom and just wasn't thinking clearly. It would be nice if I could have used my file/directory compare program to check the iPhone against my laptop, but it is not compatible with devices, only removable drives.
And no, I don't use iTunes. I stopped using iTunes years ago when it would randomly decide to delete contacts from my phone just because they didn't exist on my computer or some sh-- like that. I have always just manually synced all my stuff and have never had an issue like this. To say I am sad to lose that video is an understatement.
I googled "iPhone undelete" and "iPhone data recovery" and downloaded a trial for one of the likely candidates. It turned up a bunch of garbage, but not my video.
Anyways... I am wondering if anyone else has experienced this type of scenario? Has anybody identified what could cause this to happen? I would like to avoid this in the future. (I will avoid this type of loss, because I know now what I could have done differently to be more careful. But it would be nice if I didn't have to get all neurotic about checking 60GB of photos/videos side by side each time I copy them to my computer...)
I have seen other threads on the forum here regarding corrupted libraries and such, but I am not sure this is the same thing.
One suspicion I have is that it might have to do with the iPhoto app being installed on the phone. I can't articulate why I think that is worth considering. But when I looked at my Video folder, I ended up with many duplicate videos, and all the duplicated videos' file names were 2 numbers apart. As if all the file names got shifted at some point. Very strange.
Thanks for listening to my rant. If anybody has an idea, I am interested. If anybody else has lost precious memories due to this, we should talk. If it is a widespread problem, maybe we can all get together and pound down Apple's door?

In my case number of weird things happen whenever I try to copy pictures/videos from my iPhone from direct USB...
1. JPG files are wrongly named as MOV and vice versa.
2. I copy only folders but in addition files with no extension are copied in the main folder, very strange.
3. Whenever I open one of the folders, strange icons like this () start appearing which cannot be copied even.
Unfortunately I used to delete a lot of files with wrong extensions in the past because I never new they could be fixed.
Apple should answer this!
Note: I am using Windows 8.1 and use a direct USB cable without iTunes to copy the media files directly from My Computer.

Can Firefox CS5 recognize custom file extensions as PNGs?

WHen you work with game skins you will have custom file extensions such as .scworld and .scskin that are really PNG files renamed. Does anyone know how to add these as recognizeable extensions in Firefox?

mac pro mid 2010 2,8 quad (24GB RAM) and my mbp 15" i7 (4GB RAM)
where i installed Photoshop CS5.
on both macs, photoshop always saves files with capital letter file extensions (xxx.TIF or xxx.PSD)
thats very annoying, as i have to manually rename the file in the finder later.
and thats for all files i create.
i really wonder, could anyone from the adobe staff please comment if it is a bug

i installed CS5 4 weeks ago, since this time, i never got a file extension in small case letters, only capital letters ( xxx.TIF ). why?
i checked it in preferences, see enclosed screenshot... i never had this problem in CS4.
it would be important for myself, when saving files, that alle extensions are small case letters, like xxx.psd or xxx.eps
usually i rename these extensions manually, cause i am uploading final images to PC servers, which
cant recognize capital letters, i presume....

Wrong File Extension after using "Save AS" in PS7 and PSCS

After using 'Save As' the file extension is incorrect (such as filename.psd.jpg) or on opening an image file saved with Save As Photoshop returns the message "Could not complete your request because it is not a valid Photoshop Document".
There's a setting in 'Tweak UI' under the heading 'Common Dialogs' that offers a choice of disabling 'Enable AutoComplete'.
If you disable 'Enable AutoComplete' then Photoshop 7 and 8 (CS) will no longer add the appropriate ending to a file when using 'save as'.
Unfortunately re-enabling this option does NOT appear to cure the problem, and a re-install of the O/S may be necessary.

That would work if I scanned each card one at a time but that would increase my scanning time 9X.

UTI associated with wrong file extension

Okay, here is the deal. There are two file extensions, rar and cbr, that are associated with the Uniforma Type Identifier com.rarlab.rar-archive. I do not want the file extension cbr to be associated with com.rarlab.rar-archive. How do I break this association?

In Finder, do a Get Info on a .cbr File, look for Open With, chose what you do want to open itwith, check the Apply to all box.

Finder reads wrong file extension

I've got an After Effects 6.5 install disk that I want to put on my MB Pro. But for some reason, Finder is displaying the AE icon as a red circle with a slash...like a no smoking sign. And it's telling me the file extension is ".5" when I hit Command+I. I used this disk a couple of months ago and it had no problems with the icon or running installer...I just opted to go with the free trial of AE 7 instead of completing the install. And yes, this is a legitimate copy of After Effects I have. I know it's not supported on an Intel Mac, but I've got Photoshop CS running just fine. Any ideas? I just added Boot Camp and Windows XP today, any chance that's the issue.

Bingo. Now that you mention that I remember that I unchecked the box to include something to do with Classic in my cloned drive I made before formatting for Boot Camp. So now that I've restored to that version, I lost Classic and the ability to install AE. Oops. I guess I'll see what I can do about reinstalling OS X and adding Classic back on.

Firefox downloads a file with the wrong file extension. How can I fix this?

The title says it all. When I download files, it comes out with the wrong extension, not sure what extension it comes out as.
It actually just comes out as "file."
How can I fix this? Is there something in about:config I can tweak to eliminate this error?

This type of problems are not related with the browser you are using, in this case, Firefox. This issues are the consequence of the way that the website "packed" the file.
What you should do is download the file, locate the file, give right click on the file and select "Rename". Now, don't change the name!!! Just add "." and then the extension that you wanted. Example, you download the file "norwegianwood", after renaming it, it should read "norwegianwood.srt".

Photoshop CS6 file extension problem

I want to choose an file extension in the "Save as" Dialog. If i choose Jpeg, Photoshop takes EPS and so on. Systemupdate and reinstall PS does not help.

Are Photoshop and OS fully updated?
As with all unexplainable Photoshop-problems you might try trashing the prefs (after making sure all customized presets like Actions, Patterns, Brushes etc. have been saved and making a note of the Preferences you’ve changed) by keeping command-alt-shift pressed on starting the program or starting from a new user-account.
System Maintenance (repairing permissions, purging PRAM, running cron-scripts, cleaning caches, etc.) might also be beneficial, Onyx has been recommended for such tasks.

Weeding out bad fonts never seems to be a bad idea, either. (Validate your fonts in Font Book and remove the bad ones.)
If 3rd party plug-ins are installed try disabling them to verify if one of those may be responsible for the problem.

Photoshop cs5 is not appending file extensions

in previous versions, photoshop appended to the file extension in the fiel save/save as dialog box. it no longer does this and when you save a file it does not append the file extension to the file name, resulting in unknown fiel type.
i am running windows 7 64-bit with photoshp cs5.
it does not make any since to have the option of appending the file extension if the program is not going to do it.

Just tried this out on my Windows 7 64 bit system, and I get the same results using Photoshop.
When I save a file in Photoshop CS5 64 bit with the name 047. Crayon - Abstract the file is saved as 047. Crayon - Abstract without a file extension, no matter what document type I select in the drop-down.

CS5 requires file extensions to open files?

I receieved some image files (jpegs) from a client. For whatever reason, they did not have any file extensions on the file name (no .jpg or .jpeg) They opened perfectly fine in Preview, but Photoshop just said:
Could not complete your request because Photoshop does not recognize this type of file
The funny thing is that, in the "Open..." dialog, Pshop displayed the preview image for the file.
Once I added a .jpg to the filename, Photoshop opened it without a problem. I don't remember Pshop being so dependent on file extensions in the past. It's been a long time since I had to deal with extensionless files, though. Is this normal behavior?

If the file type and extension don't match, there could be problems. Photoshop goes with the file type first (as specified by MacOS guidelines).
If the file has no type, and no extension - then Photoshop has nothing to go on. Preview does a "best guess".
(yes, Photoshop needs better guessing code, but it's not as easy as it sounds)

BIOS File extension wrong....!!!!

I've download a new BIOS update (6734v16.zip) for a KM4M-L mobo, in order to get AMD Sempron CPU support.
Surprisingly, when I un-zip the mentioned .zip I found no .rom or .bin file extension , the flasher, the .txt. and the.doc are OK but the bios file is a .0160 extension ...!!!!
Any One in this forum can help me on this matters before flashing the mobo...,I must rename the file... or is a propietary MSI© extension... ????.

Has anyone experienced file extensions not being recognised by the right program?

I'm using CC -- the whole show, Win 7 Pro and Win 8 Pro on a second PC. Only the Win 7 system is showing this issue but both systems have identical software. Click on an inDesign file and Acrobat tries to open it.
Click on a Photoshop file and a HDR application called 'Luminance' tries to open it.
Use the traditional method of choosing the program to open the files with is a waste of time. They still try to be opened by the same apps. I'm no newby here. I know my way around the registry and tried altering that to set the file to program relationship. Next boot and it's as if I'd never altered the registry in the first place.
This is strictly a work PC, not the sort of thing you'd expect to contract a virus or malware but I installed Microsoft Security Essencials and did a 'Home visit' from a well known AV company. Nothing out of the ordinary on either machine.
When I bought this system in 2010, I had an issue installing Windows on it. I had to get a MS technician to log on remotely and do the install. (Hour and half so it must have been significant) but since then it has run daily without any issues. Except for a plug-in suite called onOne 5,6 and 7. Whenever I tried to use it with Photoshop, it would open two versions of itself and take out or freeze Photoshop.
There is only one app in that suite I ever use so part of the refund was providing a stand-alone version of that app. I've pretty much convinced myself that their suite is the cause of the issue with file extensions but getting anyone to admit they have flakey software is like trying make a horse talk another human language.
The most recent issue started not long after I installed Luminance HDR, A free app that does a great job of tone mapping. I also use Luminance on the second PC that does not display these any of these problems. It has gotten so bad from trying to install the onOne app as a plugin,(another waste of money, it still kills Photoshop) that I can no longer use file manager to choose a file to open with any Adobe cc program I have. Today I targeted the motherboard and flashed the BIOS, and replaced all the drivers with new versions also.
Still doing it, GRRRR! I can't believe I'm the only one who has this problem so I'm posting here in the hope I'm not alone and might get a pointer or three on how to fix it. No harm in hoping, is there?

Well, well, well... Nothing has changed. Somehow or another Adobe has managed to truly take control of Windows 7.
I updated Bridge or more correctly... The Cloud did and every files extension in Bridge had 'none' as the application. Lovely stuff. Now All I want to know is why did Adobe take control of Windows file manager and cause this much grief?
I almost never use the clunky and often impossible to manage Bridge. Simple freeware... Irfanview is way more elegant than Bridge and 10 times more useful IMO.
Well thanks for the heads up Curt. I never considered the full implication of giving Adobe the freedom to add and remove whatever they wanted to... Forget the don't fix what isnt broken thing... Just pour everything we've got in the cloud onto all the members PCs, eh? Hard drives are cheap and hey, what are forums for when things go wrong if it isn't to keep Adobe informed of bugs they can silently fix and pour 'em back into the cloud as fixes.
Ha,ha you just gotta love progress eh?
This is really going to take on. I can see it now... For every mess up of a PC -- "THE CLOUD DID IT"!!!

Why upper or lower case choices for image file extensions?

Thanks ahead of time for any help.
I'm wondering why you would want the file extension in lower or upper case. Is there a reason to choose one or the other in various situations? This choice is an option in the import dialog window box under File Renaming> Extensions with choices of Leave as-is, Lowercase & Uppercase.

What about writing to legacy network storage where extensions are not accepted unless in a specific case. I believe Netware used to enforce upper-case extensions at some point. There are any number of paths one can go down where you can end up cursing an application because it cannot do a simple action, like write out a filename in the right case. Think of all the complaints found in these forums where someone has cited some odd use-case no one else could ever have imagined and then stated that it is obvious that Lr should accommodate this because it is so simple to fix (e.g., to do something like provide an option whereby extensions are made all upper- or lower-case.)
You do know that even Windows and OS X are case-preserving, right? So, the actual case used to create the file is in the file metadata, regardless of what the Finder or Explorer or shell may decide to show you. How this metadata is used by various APIs is open-ended.

Dreamweaver CC and Windows 8.1 - Can't Find A Valid Editor For This File Extension

Was running the latest version with no issues and then I loaded Office 2013 .. Now when I am in the remote site and try to double click on a .cfm file, I get a dialog box..Can't Find A Valid Editor For This File Extension..
I tried the support chat and they said Dreamweaver support was not available, try again later???
So I thought I would reinstall the CC version and now I can see the Dreamweaver icon next to the files but still ... can't open the file..
Any assistance would be appreciated?

The issue is only in Windows 8.x where when Dreamweaver CC is installed, it is not able to turn on the file type associations by default. The workaround for now is to manually add the extensions both within Windows and then within Dreamweaver CC itself.
Go to Control Panel > Programs > Default Programs > Set Your Default Programs and select Dreamweaver CC and then select 'Choose defaults for this program' and Select All or the extensions you want to open in Dreamweaver CC
Start Dreamweaver CC and go to Edit > Preferences > File Types/Editors and add '.cfm .cfc' to the extensions and then add C:\Program Files (x86)\Dreamweaver CC\Dreamweaver.exe then click on Apply and Close
That should be it.
