CS5 Color Calibration and Printing Problems vs. CS3

We are migrating from CS3 to CS5, and i'm working on getting the printing right.
We are on MacPro towers, 10.6.6, with LaCie LCD Monitors and an Epson 2200.  Calibration on monitors and printer done by EyeOne Pro and Profilemaker Pro.
Printing:  In CS3, creating the profile was done by printing the appropriate Eye One testchart.  It gets opened with 'no color management', and is printed out with 'no color management'.  This way, the testfile is being printed as the printer prints, with no tweaks.  The color adjustment controls (brightness, saturation, cyan, magenta, etc) within the Epson driver are set to Zero.  Then, this print is scanned in, using the Eye One, and you get the profile of the printer.
Now, when printing actual files, 'Photoshop Manages Colors' is utilized, and the created Profile from Eye One is selected.
We have had great luck with this, matching screen to print.  If a slight tweak is needed, then we could use the Epson color adjustment controls to modify slightly.
Again, we've had great prints consistently for years using this method.
Now comes CS5...
Printing.  Trying to use our existing profile...
When 'Photoshop Manages Colors' and the Profile are selected, now the Epson color adjustment controls are greyed out.  So, we lose out on the 'tweaking' possibilities.  I'm a fan of profiles, but now i have absolutely no control after the fact.
Trying to create a new profile....
'No Color Management' is not longer available as an option in 'Color Handling'.  So, now i can't even print out the baseline testchart without adding some sort of profile to it?  If i would choose 'Printer Manages Color' for this testpage, I would normally set the Epson Color Adjustments to Zero to get this baseline print for profiling.  But now, If I would do that, it's only going to be greyed out when i go back in and let Photoshop manage the colors.  Sheesh...
To make matters worse...
I pull up the same testchart in CS3 AND CS5.  We are on a calibrated monitor, using North American Prepress presets on both programs.  Same monitor, same color settings, same file.  AND the testchart looks different in each program.  Similar, but definite differences in shades.  Eyedropper readings are the same for both programs.
So, CS5 is even rendering color differently on screen, and i have little or no way to create my custom profile or control my printer?  Sheesh....
Any help or direction is appreciated.
Rich

thanks for the input.
I will look at the links you recommended.  When 'Compensate for Scene-Referred Profiles' is unchecked in CS5, the monitors match.  I'll need to do some research to see that that 'compensation' is, and what's happening.
As for the 'not considered a good color managed workflow'...
That's fine.  But I would consider a good managed workflow using a calibrated monitor, and using a profile that matches the printer and substrate being used, right?  When i plug in the canned printer profile in CS5, i get unsatisfactory results.  With that 'correct' workflow, there is no way to modify what is ending up on the printed page.  You get what you get.
Even if i back up to CS3, create a custom profile with the Eye One, run Colorsync/Profile all the way through, and eliminate the Epson Color Adjustments, I'm still obeying a 'correct' workflow, but what if my prints are slightly too Cyan?  Or slightly too open/light?  (granted, Profilemaker Pro does have a profile 'editor', but it's convoluted and extremely difficult to use.  I've never gotten good results with it.)
If you have no way to do small adjustments at the back end on the printer, and it's been 'profiled' correctly, and the prints don't match calibrated screen with proper color spaces....
uh....then what do you do?  which one is right?  The screen or the printer?
I've had hundreds of images over the years go from screen to client (or press if we were controlling the print phase of the job), which then got printed, and have had basically 'zero' client issues with color.  We have great color here on screen, from capture into post production.
But when my client wants a proof, in house, they want to see what they've been seeing all day in the studio and in post.  How am I supposed to adjust my prints if a 'proper color managed workflow' isn't giving me matching proofs?
I sincerely appreciate the input here.  I'm just frustrated, because even if my 'workflow' isn't technically correct, it's not without merits and I've had excellent consistent results that just 'worked'.  Now, i've got to find a new method within CS5.

I am trying to print a color photo on my MacBook Pro from iPhoto (not using Photoshop) using Epson 2200 printer, and everything I do in the Color Matching and Print Settings results in a photo with a pink cast to it. What am I doing wrong?

Have you checked the ink cartridges and made sure the nozzles are clear? Are you able to print from outside of iPhoto with the correct color?
Try the following: make temporary copy of the library and do the following:
1 - delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your
         User/Home()/Library/ Preferences folder.
2 - delete iPhoto's cache file, Cache.db, that is located in your
         User/Home()/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder.
3 - launch iPhoto and try again.
NOTE: If you're moved your library from its default location in your Home/Pictures folder you will have to point iPhoto to its new location when you next open iPhoto by holding down the Option key when launching iPhoto.  You'll also have to reset the iPhoto's various preferences.

  • Printing problems with CS3- Prints dont match what is on screen

My prints dont match what i am seeing on the screen when using CS3. I am using windows xp and printing on a epson 7800. I never had this problem before i started using CS3. I have calibrated my monitor.
I have the standard version of CS3 not the extended.
I read a arctical that CS3 prints darker then what is on your screen. The solution if you have CS3 extended is to increase lightness just before printing, but what if you dont have the extended version, what do you do?
I couldnt find this topic on the forum here. I am sure others must have had this problem too. What is my solution?
    Thanks in advance

There are a bunch of things that can affect the difference between what you see on screen and what you get in print. It is not enough to just look at calibration. Calibration is a starting point. Here are some things that may affect your result:
    * Your monitor type
    * Your PC type (laptops may not be best for image correction)
    * Your calibration device
    * The lighting in the area you work in
    * Choices made while calibrating
    * Proper setup for using the ICC profile (e.g., you aren't running conflicting software)
    * Proper color management setup
    * Smart choice in color space / working space selection
    * Sensible choices for any other color management changes (if any)
    * Careful use of on screen proofing settings
    * Sensible choice for color management in capture (on camera or with scanner)
    * Smart use of color profiling
    * Good choice of printing materials / inks (as applicable)
    * Good choice of equipment for printing
    * Proper maintenance of printing equipment
I'm probably missing a few there, but I'll work on it. The best scheme I think is to keep things as simple as possible. Especially if you are having trouble, eliminate variables. When you get things working as you expect, then you can try to get a little more fancy. However, every variable you add will come with drawbacks in one form or another. Freeagent seems to make some sense here...

  • Color Profiles and Printing

Hi all, First timer here so please be gentle!
I have recently purchased LR3 (I know!) and having trouble printing from there.
I have a Spyder Express calibarted monitor and as instructed both in LR Help and elsewhere on the net, I select the color profile of my printer and paper (Canon MP990 with Plus Glossy II) from within LR and ensure color management is set to "None" within the printer driver. When doing this (with both Relative and Perceptual Rendering) I experience slight out of shift colors when printing. I understand I might expect this as the printer can never match what I see on screen 100% but here's the rub....When turning off the screen calibration profile using the Spyder utility on the toolbar, the colors displayed are near exact what I'm seeing on my prints. Also, I have been experimenting with many different options and when I select "Managed by printer" within LR, and then "Driver" Color Management within the printer driver I once again get near perfect match to what I see on screen using the claibrated monitor profile!??
I know this means I can just do one of the above to get prints matching what I see on screen but I also like to publish pics on the net and send some away for printing so how can I be sure which (if any) of my "workarounds" are valid or if there is some underlying problem somewhere which means that when following the instructions of LR, Canon, Windows and many internet guides, my prints do not match my calibrated monitor profile? And why is it that selecting "Pinter Managed" with "Driver" OR truning of my screen calibration and using the stated instructions result in better color rendition?
Apologies if this is not LR specific (guess could be a problem with Win, Canon or Monitor profile rather than LR) but my Google search led me here and there appears to be a wealth of expertise available here on such matters!

i once had to print on a epson P50 printer from my sister because my own printer was send in for service.
i have a full color managed system from monitor, scanner to printer.
but i have never managed to get good results with the P50 when i selected that photoshop should do the color handling.
the prints with the printer driver doing the color handling looked much better then the photoshop managed prints.
there are some ICC profiles for epson paper coming with the P50 and of course i used them (i was printing on epson premium semigloss) ..... but it did not help a bit.
and yes i know about disabling color management in the printer driver when PS does the color handling.
trust me.. there was no double color handling.
after some testprints i found out that i have to set the color handling to "printer driver" and change the color adjustment to "Adobe RGB" and "Gamma 1.8" in the printer driver.
that way the P50 produced good looking prints. not 100% perfect but much closer to my calibrated monitor display (i use a dtp94 for profiling).
that will not help you with your canon printer.. thought.. but i just want to tell you...your are not alone.
that said my Epson R2880 prints PERFECT when photoshop does the CM and i would never let the printer driver do the color handling on this printer.
i guess some printers are just not working well when photoshop (or lightroom) does the color handling.
    especially cheap consumer models.
a friend had an epson R200 and complained about the same issues i had with the P50.
he always had to fiddled around in PS to adjust the images for printing and i don´t mean subtle changes.
i gave him my settings and his prints looked better, immediately with no need for PS adjustments.
i know that is against everything you might have read in books or heard in tutorial videos about printing. i wondered too and that was why i have done a few dozend testprints with the P50, trying all the different settings.
they always say that you have to let photoshop do the color handling... (and i can say it´s true for the R2880 or R3880)... but my experience with cheap epson models (R200, P50) tell another story.

  • CS5 Photoshop large format printing problem

In making large prints (35 x 70 inches, 30,000 x 13,000 pixels) using CS5 Photoshop on Mac OSX 10.6.3, the last 12 to 18 inches of the print is solid black. Using the same file and computer with CS4 Photoshop the file prints correctly. The only difference is CS5 and sending 16 bit color to the printer.
CS5 also prints considerably slower in that the printer stalls. Using print preview prior to printing shows the image to be correct but the print itself is incorrect.
Is there a known issue printing with CS5 Photoshop and large images? Any workarounds? Suggestions on how to track down the source of the problem?

I just got off the phone for the second time in 2 weeks, with the same problem, Printing solid black rectangles, on all   of my Epson printer [2200, 7600, 9800]. I was on for over 8 hours last week and 2 hours today , and nothing that was tried has helped!
Last week I shut my whole system down in the evening, and the following mourning it was back working fine, last nite it did it again and I shut everything down about 11pm and turn it∫back on this am and the problem is still there, The supervising tech said  he tried everything he knew how to do, and the problem was going to some other tech investigation group and it would take 2 to 3 days to ©´t a response about this problem.  I print for a living and I am now out of business until they come up with a fix.
By the way when I print off my desktop in preview the pictures print normal, and a tip I øfƒer is when your testing make a postage size picture and test it on 8.5x11 plain paper, and if you ofse† it to a corner you can get 8 test on one sheet of paper.

  • HP Officejet 5510 all in one - stalling of printing carriage and printing problems

I have had this All in One Printer since December 2004. It had been working fine until I replaced a cartridge at a refill store over a year ago. To deal with the problem with HP I felt would be time consuming so I  put up with the problem and if I needed good quality printing, I would take it to Kinkos.
The print carriage is slow to respond and print from my computer and then in the middle of the task the carriage will stop and stall or bang like it wants to move, but is stuck and then, with all the lights flashing, I get a message in the copier window for me to clear the printing jam or carriage jam and then press OK.   I open the door to the carriage and then close it and press OK.  It does not always work the first time to make the carriage stop banging. Eventually it will stop and the paper will release  and then it will continue finishing the task, but a lot of the time what is printed has double printing with jagging to one side of the paper.
This is also affecting receiving any faxes because it involves print carriage.
I have done all the steps for clearing a paper/carriage jam. There is nothing visable to cause a jam.  I have managed to do  the self test after the printer goes through some banging and  then telling me to open the door to clear the jam.    I have done the steps to
clean the cartridges and then again do a self test.   I downloaded the latest driver/updates for the printer, but the problem persists.
The cartridge refill store , not seeing the problem first hand, keeps offering for me to bring back the cartridges if the problem persists and replace them.
Do you think it is the cartridges or the unit?   I just replaced the black cartridge in December 2009 and have not print much knowing
the quality would be poor.  Yesterday I saw a message that I am low on black ink. That does not seem possible.
When I do the self test it is showing white lines through the colored bars and I am missing the pink or red bar. So I know I have to replace the color cartridge.
As far as alignment,  when I did the first of two self tests,                                                     Second Test After the Drive Download
the Vertical Cartridge to Cartridge read    -12                               -24
the Horizontal Cartridge to Cartridge read    -24                                99
the Black Bidirectional Cartridge to Cartridge read    -54                                0
the Color Bidirectional Cartridge to Cartridge read      6                                 6
After doing the steps to automatically clean the cartridges, it printed a report with symbols at the top. They look to be squeezed together and the top portions of the symbols are missing.  The black bar has some white indents along the edges and the blue and yellow bars are spread more apart with some lighter colored lines vertically.
I have Windows XP and the HP Director was not working.  I downloaded the patch and it is working correctly telling me that both cartridges are low, the black more than the tri-color and now a message that the print carriage has stalled.  The help button tells me  to do everything I have already done.
Do you have an answer that I  can manage by myself or would it be better to take it to a computer repair place?
    Thank You , 918nifferf

I have a carriage jam on my HP Officejet 5510 which I cannot correct.. I have tried everything I know to do. There are two black pieces that will not spring down when the cartridges travel across. I th en get a carriage jam message.
    Do these pieces need lubricated?
How can I get t hem to go down when the carriage goes across?
Thanks for any information or help options

  • Epson Printing Problem with CS3

My Epson Stylus Pro 9600 has a problem with CS3 printing. When printing large images (i.e. 36x60) a portion of the image would be missing at the bottom (blank) The 10.01 update addressed this issue but it seems not completely. The problem was attributed to using a "Custom" print resolution however I still have this problem and after much testing I have narrowed it down to the "Finest Detail" check box under the custom, advanced tab. Checking this "Finest Detail" check box reproduces the problem.
I'm not sure where the problem lies whether it be Photoshops new stripped down print code or Epsons drivers. For the mean time I will keep this feature de-selected. Hope this helps other frustrated Epson Owners.
Vista 32, dual quad xeon 2.33
Photoshop CS 3.3 Extended (Masters Collection)
Epson Stylus Pro 9600, Drivers ver 5.52, current printer bios

Adobe blamed Epson drivers for not anticipating CS3's changes. Like they're clairvoyant or something. Their reason was that it was too hard to take into account every printer on the market when writing the new (unasked for) CS3 printing module. A feeble excuse when it comes to Epson pro machinery, though - it is the industry standard, after all.
Solution? - use CS2 for printing, authored back when Adobe wrote its software to be compatible with existing equipment and drivers, not expecting the world to fall into line with whatever it decided it would do. CS2 works flawlessly with my 7800, CS3 remains a basket case for the same reasons you mention, though checking/unchecking the fine detail box makes no difference. CS3 is erratic - sometimes it works as directed, but then out of nowhere it will suddenly decide to attenuate a pano print.
We'll see if they get it right with CS4's "improved" printing, but don't hold your breath.

  • Display and Printing Problems

I am using Photoshop CS5 extended on a minimac running 10.7.4. I have the lastest updates from Adobe installed for the Adobe Creative Design Premium Suite 5.5. I am having problems with photos not displaying correcting, but not all the time. This may sound strange. I am working on a project for a client with outside floor samples. The samples have smooth areas along with pitted or valleys patterns in it.  When the photo is displayed in photoshop it displays correctly for a time. I can leave the photo up or I can reopen the same file and the valleys and pits that are suppose to be displayed are now reversed and display as mountains or like a relief type of effect and prints that way too. Hopefully someone else has had a similar problem and can help.
This same problem occurs in Bridge CS5. The photos will display correctly for a short time but then the photos are reversed with the all the valleys pattern showing as mountains. I have deleted the cache, but to no avail. If I change to anothe folder go back to the original sometimes this clears the problem but not for long. So what gives?

Thanks Noel for the reply. Hopefully  this will help.
This is how the file should look like.
This is how the file usually displays.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • Printing problems with CS3 in Photoshop

I have Photoshop CS3.  Just got a new HP Photosmart 7520 not good prints results so far. Need help printing asap. Need to know how to set the printer dialog box to give me best prints.  Appreciative of help ASAP  as I have a big job I need to complete and am stuck with this printer.

All I want to know is how do I create successful printing from Photoshop. I have CS3 and need to know how to set the print dialog box. I am working on a Mac running OS10.6.8.
Please don't tell me to call Adobe tech support for Photoshop.  Because I am still working on CS3 I was told today that they no longer have support for it. They could not help me. Very disappointing.
I have always had a HP printer over the years and loved the quality and clarity and matching of their printers. My old printer worked just fine.  My new HP printer is  a Photosmart 7520 is not giving me as fine prints as my old printer.  When I select "Photoshop Manages color" in the print dialog box the prints are about 20% darker than the screen.  When I select "printer manages color" strange colors come out.  I am a professional Graphic Designer and need to print from Photoshop. Is there anyone out there who can help me set my print dialog box so my CS3 Photoshop version will give me successful prints? I am printing either photoshop files or jpegs usually in RGB. I am printing on HP premium quality glossy paper.
    Thank you.

  • HP Color Laserjet 3600 Printing Problems with Airport Extreme & JetDirect

I have a HP Laserjet 3600n connected via ethernet cable to our Airport Extreme base station using the built-in JetDirect functionality of the printer. Prior to installing Snow Leopard we had no problems and every computer on the home network could see and print with full functionality on the printer.
After installing Snow Leopard, it took a while but I got the printer working again with the same setup. Then we had a power outage and the printer was no longer visible on the network or in the airport settings. Again it took a while but I once again got it to work. But now it seems like it keeps falling off the network and the printer itself either shows an IP address of 0.0.0.0 or another random one. The IP address should be generated by DHCP by the airport.
I don't know if this is a problem with Snow Leopard, the airport extreme, or the printer. The way I got it to work the last couple times no longer fixes the problem. Someone please help.
    Message was edited by: balistikboy

I don't know if this is related, but...
My MacBook Pro (Airport) has always been dicey connecting to an HP LaserJet 4000 on my wired LAN. Before Snow Leopard, I used AppleTalk rather than IP printing because it just worked.
But Snow Leopard doesn't support AppleTalk any more, so I reinstalled the printer to connect via JetDirect (which supposedly provides more features). When it works, it works fine. But very often I get a message that it can't connect to the printer. The only thing I've found that fixes the problem is power-cycling the printer, which somehow enables queued jobs to print. Needless to say, this gets old.
Is there some trick I'm missing?

  • PDF Export And Printing Problem

I am using VB 2005 and the Crystal Reports that is bundled with it. I have reports on my website in the Crystal Report Viewer. I have the tool bar showing the Export and Print buttons. When you try to print (or export to PDF) you get an error from Adobe Reader "Adobe Reader could not open 'AcrXXX.tmp' because it is either not a supported file type or because the file has been damaged (for example, it was sent as an email attachment and wasn't correctly decoded)."
I can see the file in my temp folder on my c-drive and the file (AcrXXX.tmp) does not contain a pdf instead it contains html for the report (including the report viewer). I tried deleting everything in my temp folder and I still get the error. My desktop is Adobe Reader 8.0 and IE 6 and Windows XP.
The same code will create the PDF on all development and test web servers just not on my production server.
I have no problem exporting a report to Word.

  • Printing problems with CS3

Whenever I go to print an ID or AI file for the first time it is beyond slow. It does not matter if it is a large file (although ID files of any size are very slow, 30 seconds or more just to scroll to a new page) or a small file, I get a minute or more of beach ball before the print dialog box comes up. After the first print, it prints instantly for the rest of the time the app is open. Has anyone else seen this in CS3? Any fix?

I'm not sure how to create a new user (although I'm sure it's pretty simple.) I'm the only person who uses this computer, so it's never come up. Thanks for the advice, however, I'll give it a try.

  • Snow leopard and print problems

I installed Snow Leopard in my MacBook and bought the new Imac desktop with Snow Leopard...now I cannot print wirelessly from either these or my old G4 (Leopard)....followed all directions and spent much time with apple support...downloaded Canon drivers and software again to be sure I had the latest and still no success. Canon then tells me the equipment does not work wirelessly even though it did on Leopard....(it is a Canon Pixma MX850)
    Any suggestions would be welcome

I didn't see that 10.6.1 did anything for printing. BUT I did see new drivers from HP, Canon and Brother.
In your case, I should point out that the MX850 does not use Bonjour. There is no way for the Mac to see this printer on the network without first installing Canon SW. Kind of a chicken and egg problem for the auto driver download. So you will need to manually download the latest Canon SW:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL899
If you installed SW from Canon's web site / CDs, you first might want to trash /Library/Printers/Canon and reset the printing system (Hold Option and click the "-" in print and Fax Prefs).

  • Step and Repeat Problem in CS3-Urgent!

I was working on a file, step and repeats was working just fine. Then suddenly within the same file it got messed up somehow.
Whenever I type in a decimal point (say 4.5) and I move on to the next field it will default to a higher number (say 5). It is not letting me do decimal points!
I did replace preferences (and yes I got the pop up on the start menu). And the problem is still there.
And it happens in all files, not just the one.

Devices on the same network cannot have the same IP address. Since 192.168.1.1 is for the router, check the IP of the desktop and try to ping that.
