CS5: Content Aware Scale vs Image Size

Can someone explain the difference between the outcome of using the new content aware scale versus just going ahead and resizing the image? Or is this a matter of preference? Thanks!

Hi,
Content aware scale is not so much about resizing an image as much as it is about extending an image. It allows you to stretch the existing pixels along a single axis without distorting (or with less distorting) of the subject or subjects of the image.
In this first photo is the original and the area that needs to be filled with image data to the right.
In this 2nd image I just scaled the image up to fill. As you can see, I've lost a lot of the image as I'm basically cropping it as I scale it up along both the x axis and the y axis.
If I try to just scale the image along the x-axis the image will distort. The ship and the bathers get wider.
In this 4th image I've used content aware scale to "pull" the pixels over only along the x axis. Notice that the ship and the swimmers retain their original appearance.
Hope that helps
Michael

  • Photoshop CS5 content-aware scale

Hi, I'm a photoshop CS5.1 64 bits user, I'm following the "Learn adobe photoshop CS5 by video" with the instructor  Kelly McCathran. Well, I need to know how to create two layers with different sizes to apply content-aware scale...I can't! I import a picture (4000x3000) from adobe bridge...When I create a layer with a different dimension (3000x2000) the picture (4000x3000) turns to (3000x2000)!!! What am I supposed to do?

With the smaller image appearing with the larger one in Photoshop, click on the smaller image in its Layers panel and drag it over the larger image.
Once the smaller image is sitting on top of the larger one in the Layers panel, you can change the size of the smaller image by using Edit > Transform > Scale.
Hold down the Shift key as you alter the scale, the image maintains proportion.

  • Content aware scale

    Hello,
I''m new to photoshop and i noticed the new version uses this great technique of content aware scale but i can't get to make it work on a picture i would like to use. I saw a couple of tutorials but the images they use seem a bit simple and i would love to learn how to use it on complex ones.
The image i want to scale is 1600x1093px and i would like to resize it to 960x379px for a banner but if i do it the white outlines of the circles get all messed up. I tried a couple of methods described on youtube but none of them seem to work!
Is there anyone who could teach me how to scale it the right way?
    This is the picture:
    http://www.sendspace.com/file/30prku
    Thanks

The entire content of the image just won't fit under circumstances most people consider acceptable - i.e., with the original aspect ratio yielding reasonable looking results.
If you're willing to not maintain the aspect radio and make it somewhat "squashed looking", you could simply do Image - Image Size..., UNcheck [ ] Constrain Proportions and check [ ] Resample Image, and simply resample it to 960 x 379.

  • Content Aware Scale shortcut duplicates Layer ?

There seems to be a difference between accessing Content Aware Scale via the key shortcut and the Edit menu using CS5:
    - If I use the Edit menu to call up the Content Aware Scale command on a Layer or background it edits the item directly, replacing the original image.
    - If I use the shortcut Cmd + Alt + Shift +C to access the Content Aware Scale command, it gives me a duplicate Layer, or duplicates the image as I carry out a transform instead.
Is this a feature by design ?
    thanks
    Photoshop CS5 Extended 12.0.1 x64
    Mac Pro 2.8ghz quad, 8gb ram, 10.5.8

    Anyone ?
If it's not a feature it's annoying and should be fixed.

  • CS5 Content Aware Fill

Demos of the new Photoshop CS5 "content aware fill" feature on the Youtubes -- it looks impressive.
I know " Past performance is not necessarily indicative of  future results", but any guesses on when (or if) this feature would hit the PS Elements code stream?

This is looking like an advanced "must-have" type of feature so my guess is Adobe will keep it at the premium Photoshop level at least until CS6.
Note that Content Aware Scaling was introduced in Photoshop CS4, which came out at around the same time as Photoshop Elements 7 in the autumn of 2008 - but this other related feature wasn't added to Photoshop Elements 8 last fall.  Just a possible analogy.

  • Help CS5 content aware healing brush

Sorry for the dumb question folks. I just upgraded and when I click on my healing brush, I do not have a Content Aware option. What am I doing wrong. The porgram defaults to asking me to option click to determine what to use. I am running CS5 on and Imac.
    Thanks for the help.

The content aware option is for the spot healing brush, not the healing brush.

  • CS5 content aware

When I select a region, hit delete, then use the content aware fill, it doesnt give clean results. It picks up material from the region surronding the selection. It's sort of like when you use the clone stamp and the stamp picks up stuff from the surrounding region. How do I get clean fills?

If you want a "clean" fill (as in blank), Content Aware Fill is the last thing you want to use.
If you DO want textures made up, where do you expect it to get them?  From another image?  Perhaps you have a misconception about what Content Aware Fill is supposed to do...
Content Aware Fill is not magic, just good for saving some time - sometimes.  It works better on some images than others.

  • CS5 content aware move

I am using cs5 extended for MAC.  I am attempting to move an object by using content aware move feature.  When I open the "Fill" box (Edit>Fill), the command for content aware is dimmed and not usable.  What is the fix?

Of course.  This was an article on YouTube, Aug 21, 2010, uploaded by Sandy Cruz.
I failed to take the step of bringing back the marching ants.  This is a very neat procedure to move an object and allow Content Aware to fill the vacant space.

  • Disappointed in PS CS5 content aware fill

My first few attempts at using the content aware fill have been disappointing. I created a panorama and wanted to fill the foreground (misty water) and the sky (cloudy) to the top and bottom of the frame.  I selected the transparent pixel areas that needed to be filled with the water and sky, then I expanded the selection 6 pixels, so that PS had some pixels to reference for the filling operation. There wasn't much sky above the tree line, but the content aware fill worked fine in this area. However filling the foreground with the misty water did not. PS insists on referencing pixels well out of my selection and using these as part of the fill. Even after repeatedly undoing and redoing the content aware fill, PS insisted on using pixels well out of the selected pixels to create the new content aware fill. Why is this?
It seems that the only user control over this tool is the selected pixels. Shouldn't this tell PS the pixels you want it to reference for creating the fill? Why does PS insist on going well outside of the selected pixels for a reference. If I wanted it to reference other areas of the photo I would simply include those areas in or very close to the selection. Isn't the tool suppose to use the selection as a guide? How can you tell the tool to use the selected pixels as a reference?

Content Aware Fill simply does not work!
I would suggest that once you use a tool such as magnetic lasso or marquis square to define an area:
      To replace:
      1. Tones with colour (e.g. a scratch on a car, breadcrumbs on a tabletop)
      a. The eyedropper be used to sample a colour.
      b. Once the colour is defined, then the content aware is used.
      2. Pattern with a pattern (e.g. beach sand to replace dead fish and weeds on a beach)
      a. Use the rubber stamp to define the pattern that will replace the "corrupt" area
       b. Once the pattern is defined, then the content aware is used.
The problem also has to do with Internet reporters or whatever they're called. They all follow each other and make the same comments.
What happens is that all of these NetPorters end up almost verbatum with the same same material. Unfortunately, software netporting is not unique.
The same holds true for stock netporting. Some "expert" in some office off Wallstreet (everyone is moving away from there) writes that Company B23W1X
should make $1.78 a share with net profit for the quarter to be $ 148,000,000. Pretty soon there are 100,000,000 same same articles copied verbatum from
the NET or some other "expert" copied form the first  netporter expert , but "adjusted" the data by 1 cent and for the profit 138,000,000. COmpany B23W1X only makes $ 1.77 a share mand only $ 147,999,999.00.
What happens - all the brokerage houses sell.
Unfortunately, what happens with software is that everyone forks over a bundle of money for the "new features" only to find out they don't always work!
Bottom line: wait a few months till the regular public and users start posting.
The same stampede has occurred with Apple's new operating system Lion OS 10.7. Apple sold 1 million  of this OS in 1 day!
I waited, and started to read the problems people were having. I'm still considering the new OS.

  • CS4 Content Aware Scale....poor results?

I have big hopes (and more than a few jobs) that will benefit from this new feature, but after several attempts, I am left frustrated. The demos look amazing, but after trying it on small (1 meg), medium & large (150 meg) files I am left wondering if this will actually be as useful as first imagined.
In a nutshell, the post-stretched images are lousy, with horrible stair-stepping visible at even 25% screen magnification (the stepping definitely would be visible in print). The aliasing I am seeing are clumpy, stretched, jpeggy-looking artifacts that are apparent in any area of even slight contrast.
Unless I have chosen the wrong random test images (???) or have missed something I should be doing, I am really disappointed.
Before I go off too much, I am wondering if anyone else has done much testing or noodling around enough to pass along your opinion.
I am seeing the behavior when stretching either horizontally, OR vertically, and the stepping is apparent at almost any amount of stretching (no need to exaggerate by stretching to 200%)
    Any opinions or thoughts welcomed.

No demo in use here. I purchased CS4 at the inflated UK prices as soon as it was announced and agree that this is disappointing to the point that I really hope we are doing something wrong. Surely Adobe wouldn't release something this bad and promote it as a key development in CS4?
I realised that there might be some quality issues with really large increases but I wasn't expecting it to completely destroy a file where the size was being decreased. On areas with grass I see strange areas which are completely blurred and then the same weird shearing effect that you have mentioned that could almost look like strange shards of glass.

  • Can't get Content Aware Fill in CS5 to work as advertised in many tutorials...

I have tried unsuccessfully to get Content Aware Fill in CS5 to work as advertised in the dozens of tutorials I have watched.  I have used many of the techniques, but unless the background is a simple one, CAF seems to drag in stuff from all over (even if I protect it in a mask) the background.  Is there some special trick I am not aware of?

That doesn't work as advertized. Make your selection save it with a name as a Channel. When Content Aware Scale is now selected,  I get a bounding box around the selection. Enable Protect and nothing changes. The bounding box is still there and is the only part of the image that will respond and not even as Content Aware. It just moves around. I've tried it over and over with the tutorial open so I could follow and the only difference I can see is he is on a Mac.
    What I want to do is stretch so here is the steps;
Make a new Layer the size of the finished image. Move the image into that. You have a white space ready to be filled. Select the protected area. Save as  Channel with Name. Go to ContentAware Scale. A Bounding Box immediately appears around the selection. That is the only adjustable part, not the entire image.
    See Images.

  • How to only have 1 image with content aware scaling

My knowledge (lack of, really) with content aware scaling is that 1st you create a new layer of the background and then rescale accordingly. I did the following: -1- Created a 2nd layer -2 used quick selection tool on my main subject ( a person) and named it. -3- deselected the selection -4- Edit menu --> Content aware scale -5- resized it to something smaller (chose my previous named selection channel). -6- Pressed "Enter"
The result is that I can now see 2 images; the smaller sitting on the larger. What now? All I want is the smaller image. If I throw away the original layer what I end up is the new layer with  the white and gray default background showing as part of the image (which ends up being printed as well or if saved looking as is with the grey-white. Is what I should do the obvious--cut out via cropping the un-needed (gray-white) part? Or am I missing a step somewhere?
    Thank you

My changing of image size had always been either by using the crop tool (which of course also removes parts of the image), or going to the top menu and choosing 'Iimage Resize' ( Alt + Ctrl + I). So using any method other than the one described alway had 'Content Aware Resize' greyed out and therefore unuseable hence me thinking a 2nd layer needed to be done. I had not been aware to use the marquee tool--so thanks. Either way though, when scaling down, it seems that cropping needs to bee done just the same. I was hoping there was a method where this was not required and could be done directly. Your method was defnitely helpful and saved me a step nevertheless so thanks. BTW, if I may, why does everywhere I go and have seen always show to create an extra layer? Your method seems to be better and actually shows creatin an extra layer to be totally useless so that is why I am asking since it seems to be totally not needed.

  • CS4: Content Aware scaling never works....

    Quad 2.66 Xeon MacPro
    16GB RAM
Dedicated 250GB internal Scratch Drive (Not a volume)
    2 nVidia 512mb 8800GT video cards.
Whenever I choose "Content Aware Scale" the transform handles appear, I alter the image, ht enter to commit and I get this:
    >Could not complete your request because there is not enough memory (RAM).
    Huh?
The file I'm working on currently is only 37.5mb in size, 2599x2592 pixels, two layers ...
But this error presents itself with each and every attempt to use Content-Aware scale.
    Any help?

so I'm not the only one who has problems with content aware scaling -- but there is no current discussion about it and I'm not sure what to do now.
Im on a mac book pro that i bought october 2008 with 4 Gb RAM, with a 2.8 GHz Intel core 2 duo processor. I run content aware scaling on a file and get the warning dialogue: Could not complete your request because there is not enough memory (RAM).
People have talked about CAScaling not working well with Bigger tiles plug in activated. as far as I can see I do not even have that plug in. I go to apps>PS CS4 >plug-ins > extentions -- and it's not there -- I see plug ins for AltiVecCore, Enable Async IO, FastCore MMXCore, Multi Processor Support. PPCCore, and scripting support -- but not a Bigger tiles plug in which I still have in my previous copy of CS3 -- but not CS4.
So I'm wondering what's up - how to solve this issue and get back to work -- and just how I should have my PS performance preferences set up for best performance. Anyone out there with a clue?
    thanks,
    owen

  • Content Aware Scaling--Upscaling isn't working?

I am using content aware scaling.  Everything works great until I try to upscale the image by dragging the corners.  When I try to transform to the larger size, the part that has been widened is "hidden."  I know that it is larger because I can "move" it within the white box that marks the original size, but I can't make the complete upscaled image appear.  Can anyone help with this?  Thanks!

After content aware scale, go to Image>Reveal All
    and see if that helps.

  • CS4 Lasso Tool and Content Aware Fill

I saw this performed by Moose Petersen to duplicate
and fill an area to expand an image. He used the Lasso tool to enclose the area (now vacant) that he wanted to fill with the exact contents on the edge of the image.
I have been unable to reconstruct his process.
Can someone offer step by step help to accomplish this? Wish to fill the right side to make size 16x20.
    Thanks!
    Dan

Here, I'll be a bit more specific.  Do things in exactly this order:
    >1. Make the image a layer (not Background).
To do this, make the LAYERS panel visible, hold down the Alt key, and double-click the Background.  It should become Layer 0.  If it is not the Background to start with, you can skip this step.
    >2. Increase the canvas size to 16 x 20 ratio, opening new space on the right.
Image - Image Size, UNcheck Resample Image, and make the image 20 inches tall.  Then Choose Image - Canvas Size, and expand to the right as follows:
    >3. Do a rectangular selection excluding most of the red parts.
You should have, at this point, an image with some checkerboard showing on the right side.  Choose the Rectangular Marquee tool as I noted above in post 5 and drag it around the area shown in post 1, including a few of the red parts.
    >4. Edit - Content Aware Scale and drag the right edge handle to fill the canvas.
Click Edit - Content Aware Scale from the menu.  You'll get a set of little square handles all around the portion of the image that you selected.  Grab the one at the right edge and pull to the right, as shown here:
    >5. Touch up (e.g., lightly blur) any edges that have become noisy because of the operation.
After the Content Aware Scale operation, I saw that the flower petal edge was a bit rough looking, so I thought it might be a good idea to select the Blur tool and brush over the edge lightly.
