CS5/CS3 nightmare.

I am running Illustrator CS5 while the rest of my studio is running CS3.
Ridiculous I know but I'm not the boss.
Anyway, saving my files in CS5 causes problems when someone else opens them in CS3.
I know that it's possible to save as a Legacy Format but it's annoying having to 'Save As' all the time.
Is there anyway to automate Illustrator so it always saves down to a CS3 version, even when I just press Apple-S?

If you open a file from an old version and then just Save, the file will stay in that old version. Illustrator shows a warning message.
But that is the only way to do so.

Scripting CS5- CS3

I'm not sure what posessed me to read the latest thread about people complaining about the inability to downsave from CS5 to CS3 (over in the general forum), but then I had a goofy thought:
What if someone wrote a script to iterate over a document and dump the whole thing in JSON (JavaScript Object Notation), or whatever, and then import it into CS3?
(Originally I was thinking, I wonder why no one who is concerned about this doesn't sit down and write the horrible bear of an XSLT translation from IDML to INX? It certainly wouldn't be pleasant, and it would be a pain to get all the corner cases right, but it should be do-able...) I wondered if there wasn't a format other than IDML or INX that descrbed reasonably well the format of an InDesign document, and then I realized that the Scripting DOM is basically such a model. And even better, since you can ask InDesign to use an older version of the scripting DOM, you can ensure that you don't give CS3 anything that it shouldn't be able to evaluate.
Now...I'm not going to write this tool, but it doesn't seem like it should be more than a few days of work for someone who is eager and interested (maybe none of those people have CS5? I suppose that's not an impediment though! No need for CS5 to write the code...). You just loop over all the properties of the document recursively ("for (i in app.activeDocument)...").
There are probably a whole bunch of corner-cases that need special handling, And some decisions would have to be made about text...maybe the easiest answer with text would be to export it as InDesign Tagged Text and throw that representation in the file, rather than having to loop over individual characters and determine where overrides stopped and started.
And you'd have to be very careful not to get caught in loops in the DOM. Anyhow, does anyone want to do this?

1. If people complain it misses features (such as GREP styles), they can be invited to write a workaround themselves!
2. JS is version independent. Well, largely, at least. If some properties in CS6 or '7 change names (again!), it should be relatively easy to update.
3. JSON is a general format (isn't it? I'd have to look into it) so, finally, the writers of Scribus have something to look into.
Against:
1. You need the same ID version as the document, because otherwise you cannot open it.
2. It Won't Ever Work, because (if you read that thread) people who "need" the downsave are expecting way too much.

Flash cs5 cs3 compatibility

hello.
i am at school that requires student to purchase the Current adobe CS suite when they enter as freshman.
we now have CS5 in our labs. Students cannot figure a way to get there CS5 files into CS3.
is this possible?

Check to see what each program has an optioon for in the save as dialgue box.
E.I. Flash CS4 can save as CS3 and CS3 can Save as CS2 and as well Illustrator can do the same same but in a borader spectrum even sa low as AI 9.
My suggestion would be to make native files of each in CS5 app and test then go back to CS 5 and try all of the save as opitons using the legacy options. I can probably say Phtooshop, and Illustrator will not be so hard but Flash, Encore, Premier, After Effects, etc., will be shoot and miss especially since you are going from CS5 all the way down to CS3.
I ebleiev Phtooshop is the only one that can do it if you sue the most campatable opitons check bix when saving a .PSD file.
Remmebr as a strudent even though you get a great deal when you buy a student version of the suite you can never upgrade those licenses. SO you arn't really getting a deal you will eventallu pay for a full suite amdprobab;y more if you keep buyion student versions.
Buy full versions and never look back. Upgrade costs for full licenses are just as much as buying a new student version every new release. I tell students all teh time by a full version and be ready once you graduate.

CS5 - CS3

How can I open a CS-5 (InDesign) document in CS-3? I have both versions installed.

open the document in the cs5 and export the file in "IDML"
Open this "IDML" file in cs4 nad export it again in "INX"
this INX file will be compatible and will open up in CS3 ..............You need to have CS4 for this.

InDesign files are not backwards compatible. In CS4 there was an option to save files in a interchange format that 3 could open, but I don't see that option in CS5. You might try saving in the IDML from the export menu, but the chances of CS 3 opening it are not good.
Dreamweaver should work as it's just html/css etc...
Photoshop should work backwards
Finally can't speak to flash as I don't use it.

URGENT: labels and ratings lost from CS3 to CS5

Hi, I have been using Bridge CS3 for categorize my photos and i have instaled CS5 recently (i have the two now).
All the ratings and labels were lost. In jpeg files, in CS3 i can see the rating in the xmp metadata "rating" (in file info, advanced) but not in CS5 (the xmp metadata is there but without "rating"). In CS5 i can rating the photos with problems.
If i export (save) xmp from jpeg in CS3:

The only difference being xmp is being used instead of xap. I have also looked at CS4 and it is the same as CS5, except they are in reversed order but still show correctly.

Best workflow CS3 to CS4 to CS5 or CS5 to CS4 to CS5

I had been doing a monthly magazine in Mac CS3 and sending it for text edits to someone with Mac CS4. They would return it to me as an .inx doc and I would prepare it as PDF for the printer.
Now that I have CS5, Would I be better off doing it in CS5 then giving them .inx to do edits?
So what's best?:
CS3 to CS4 to CS5
CS5 to CS4 to CS5
CS3 to CS4 to CS3

How about CS5 -> RTF -> CS5?
Just set up your text as one great big threaded, well-styled story, and export the RTF. Your editor edits text using TextEdit (how apropos), and returns the edited RTF file to you. You place it & clear overrides, and magically have an updated InDesign file requiring only minor tweaks. (We call this "poor man's InCopy" in our office.)
If I had to pick, I'd be dithering between unhappy options. Going backwards (CSn -> CSn-1) is a bad idea. Going forwards two versions at once (CSn -> CSn+2) is also a bad idea. Heck, in any workflow you want to be reliable, going forwards one version (CSn -> CSn+1) is dangerous and should be avoided. I would suppose that CS5 -> CS4 -> CS5 would be the least dangerous, if you made absolutely certain that no CS5-specific tools were being used. This requires some serious diligence, and even if you are 100% perfect in your avoidance of the new tools in CS5, text reflow will still happen occassionally. On top of that, I wouldn't advise relying on CS5 until the first bugpatch gets distributed by Adobe.
Basically, every option you have is fraught with possible dangers.
Edit: it's tough to tell someone to do something dangerous. CS3 -> 4 -> 3 is something I've done a great deal of, and it's worked out okay. Over more than a year, I've only had two projects blow up in my face because of backsaving in this workflow.

CS5 Master Collection - installation error

I reinstalled my mac and now trying to install my old adobe software to Yosemite. I got CS5 master collection (now downloaded the installer from Adobe website) but after asking password, (which the installation accepts) it gives an error message: Asennusohjelman tietokannassa havaittiin epäyhtenäisyys. I´ve tried to restart the computer but no matter what, still the same error message (Translated to English) Installation of the program in the database were observed heterogeneity . Flash cs5 keeps crashing when importing images.

Flash cs5 keeps crashing when importing images onto stage. I plan on tracing a drawing I made. They aren't that big so I don't know why cs5 crashes. Any ideas how to fix that? Thanks

I got the same problem. I tried to import into Flash cs3, cs4, cs5 - constant error in each application.
But seems I've found the reason why this happened in my case.
I just deleted the installed system video codecs (divx, xvid, third-party codecs).
I do not see a direct connection with the import objects into flash. But fact, immediately after the removal of codecs it has to work.
I suspect that the reason could be a third-party codec that is associated with playing QuickTime. Maybe.
Also if it does not help you this way, I used a temporary solution.
Open the psd in Adobe Ilustrator, copy images to clipboard, paste it into flash.
In my case the images are not displayed on the screen after insert, but put into the library.
Don't touch objects, just save the file, close the Flash.
Launch Flash and open saved file. In my case in the first run was an error.
Close the application and open it with file again.
The second time the error was not followed, the images were within the document 8-)
This option made it possible to work until the issue is not solved completely (adobe, wake up!).
win7 64, cs5 (cs3, cs4 had the same issue)

Fireworks CS4 & CS5 application frame bug in OSX Lion

I've had this problem before with Snow Leopard and CS4, never resolved it without the below, and it's bugging me to the point I don't want to pay for an upgrade to CS5 as it's still there in CS5, and I dreamed it might not be!
I know the following facts:
It doesn't exhibit on a clean OSX install.
It doesn't exhibit on a new user account on the same machine.
It doesn't go wrong for ages, but when it does it's impossible to fix without a clean install of OSX
Deleting everything realted to Adobe/Fireworks (there must be something I miss - anoyone got a list?) and re-installing CS4 or CS5 doesn't fix it.
It's related to screen resolution (2560x1600) as it doesn't exhibit if I change the resolution, but I'm not going to run in anthing less than native on my cinema screen as that's pointless.
What happens?
Open or create a new document whilst using the application frame and the whole frame jumps full screen then up and left (out of bounds slightly) and sometimes the frame is over the image.
Sometimes it can be recovered by dragging the frame (if it didn't go outside full screen) It makes using CS4 or CS5 a nightmare.
I'd like to know where it gets the notion to move the frame/go full screen, and how I can reset this weird and annoying behaviour.
Having to run Fireworks in a new account is a PITA.

WOW!
After a couple of hours fruitless application conflict searching I stumbled on a solution.
I tried the FW without the frame, and didn't like the way the bottom bar sat by the dock, so I turned on dock hiding, the bottom bar then snaps to the bottom of the screen.
Went back to application frame on and was amazed to find that everything was now working as expected.
I assumed it was to do with dock hiding, so unhid it, but FW still works fine. Thought maybe it was to do with the number of icons in the dock (I have over 40) or the dock size, but can't replicate the problem in my other user account, so I can only assume the following:
During the course of an editing session with multiple windows open and maybe with the FW window pushed under the dock and maybe opening a new file from finder in FW - maybe this is when it gets confused. - that would be a typical work pattern for me.
So, no matter any more, I have a fix for next time - hide the dock, see if it resolves, if not hide the dock allow it to open in the non frame mode to full edges of the screen, see if that fixes it.
It explains why a pristine user doesn't have the problem - small dock, it explains why a fresh install is okay for a while - dock not full of applications *I Must Have* maybe someone somewhere can replicate the bug and fix it.

Installing and Registering CS5.5 upgrade

I am currently using CS5 Design Premium. I am trying to install and register CS5.5 upgrade so I can claim my free CS6 upgrade. Installation disk has accepted my new CS5.5 serial number but wants a CS4 Serial number as proof of upgrade. I have CS5, CS3, CS2 Serial numbers but not CS4 which I by-passed. What can I do to install software?

Display font in Photoshop (menus, tools, etc)

I've been searching for two days for a way to increase the display font size in CS4 (WIndows 7). In the process, I found that the same problem exists in Cs5. I am using a 21" monitor in its native resolution and would go blind trying to see the menus and the tools.
1. Once again, does anybody know if it's possible to increase the font size?
2. If it is not possible, I have to say that I find the programmers at Adobe to be incredibly lacking sensitivity: not everybody has the eyes they had at 17

Cannot load template

When I open a page to update it content the loading is very slow. It took 5 min. to sync the template and open the page. The result is a page without the template in it.
If I create a page from a blank template it's OK.
I reinstalled Contribute and reinstalled the site and it did not fixed the problem.

I have similar problems. My client can't edit a page with Contribute CS5 who has a template apply. Pages with no template apply are OK. We can edit and publish .dwt pages on different computer at my job, with CS5 & CS3... Any idea why he could do it to?
After few secondes an error call that the server is drop or the connection are not accepted.

Display font in OC4J

Now I am developping by ECLIPSE with OC4J in Window Japan 2000.
Everything is OK but when displaying JSP page, font can't not view. All of characters are encoded to "??????".
