CS5 - CS4 backwards Comptibility Question

Will CS5 be backwards comptible with CS4?
I remember there were some pieces of Design Preium CS4 not fully compatible with the CS3 versions. I do some work at home for my workplace, so this could become a problem for me as work is looking at upgrading to CS5 in the near future.

Sorry, didn't find the right venue on the first pass. The question
is there now.
If you can, delete this thread to avoid confusion.

  • CS4 Student Edition Questions

Hi, I'm currently a student at Seattle Art Institute and need to get CS4. My question is, if I get CS4 Student Edition is it any different than the regular CS4? Does it not include some things that the other has? Also, when I graduate will I have to upgrade to a regular CS4 in order to do my own personal work or can I just use the Student Edition. And lastly, will I be able to use the Student Edition for internships? Thanks for any help,
    -Eric

I'm aware this post is rather old, but I was curious as to where you got this information? The "US" website does not say that, and I purchased the student version and talked to three different Adobe associates over the phone (including the supervisor) all of which said that here in the US you absolutely can use the Student edition of CS4 for commercial work.
EDIT: never mind I saw your link. You're right about it NOT being able to be used for commercial use in the UK.
I was worried for a second. Here in the USA you can use it for commercial work. Just called and verified the difference on the phone yet again...lol
    UK no USA yes

  • Is it possible to make InDesign files created in CS5.5 backwardly compatible with CS4 and CS3?

I have recently installed CS5.5 on my iMac running Mac OSX Lion. I have documents that were prepared in CS3 and CS4. They read OK in CS5.5 but I cannot then save them to be read in the earlier versions. Any Ideas please?

You'll need to export to IDML to open in CS4. If you need them in CS3 you'll need to open the IDML in CS4 and export to INX. You can open the INX in CS3.
WARNING: New features will be lost or badly mangled and due to changes in the text engine text will reflow throughout your document.
This has been discussed to death in the InDesign forum. Please post follow ups there.

  • Backwards compatability CS5,CS4 and CS3

I have a client using CS3. He cannot open the files that we send him because of missing plug-ins, namely WORLDREADY.RPLN, DYNAMICDOCUMENTS.RPLN and CONDITIONALTEXT.RPLN.
My understanding is that these were plug-in that were added in CS4 and cannot be removed. Does this make my CS4 and CS5 files incompatable with older versions of InDesign? Are there any workarounds other than his upgrading his copy of InDesign or my saving files as INX format?

Saving as INX is the workaround.
You have to do this from CS4 (CS5 doesn't output INX), so if the original file was in CS5, you have to step down twice. Needless to say -- ye gods, I'm still going to say it! -- all new features of both CS4 and CS5 will be discarded from the file. To top it off, the text justification algorithm changed from CS3 to CS4, so even if your poor client can finally open the file, the chance he's going to see exactly what you last saw in InDesign is pretty slim.
Given this, you have two relatively harmless options left: buy an original CS3 to work for this client only, or have him upgrade.

  • Upgraded to CS5, CS4 apps still in place. OK to remove? Best practice?

No problem to report just a minor dilema.
Upgrade to CS5 is completed and all the previous CS4 application folders are still in place and functional.
What is the best practice regarding the previous version?
    Leave them be.
    Move to trash.
    Uninstall (when provided).
    Thanks for your help.

  • Photoshop CS5 Bridge HTML Gallery Questions

Have upgraded to CS5 from CS3 and am trying to create HTML Web Galleries that are similar to what we have been creating in CS3.
I no longer have control of the size of the thumbnails created for the Index pages and cannot create less than 3 rows of thumbnails.
We used to create 2 rows and 4 columns of 200 pixel thumbnail images.
Is this something that can be modified if we downloaded the SDK and worked with scripting?

I have found the same problem when I went from CS3 to CS4 and continued the same problem in CS5 then I researched the "Output" and "Web Gallery" section again a little more thoroughly.  Found that in almost every gallery provided there is a way to change the size and/or quantity of thumbnails in your gallery.  For instance the "HTML Gallery"  in the "Appearance" section you can change the size of the original picture (your larger picture) and the quantity of thumbnails that show up per page. Next you can save your changes in the "output" section under "Style:"  While using the "Filmstrip" template you can change the size of your thumbnails in the "Appearance" section. Hope this helps

  • Photoshop CS4 Experience, Problems & Questions

    Hi all,
i just installed my Production Suite Premium on the following System (fresh install, clean System, no other versions of Photoshop):
    Intel E8500 Dualcore
    Nvidia Geforce 9800 GX2 (Driver Version 178.24)
    3 GB RAM
    Windows XP Professionel SP3
Photoshop has its own Scratchdisk assigned with at least 50 GB free Space.
I know that the 9800 GX2 is considered to be a "Gaming-Card" but as a freelance artist i work for the game-industry on many occasions and I need a decent gaming hardware to test what I am working on. As far as I know, the card meets all requirements for CS4 and Nvidia tells me, that their GPU's are perfect for CS4. (wasn't a problem with any version before, I use Photoshop AND Nvidia-Cards since Photoshop 4)
Here are the things that bug me:
    - Photoshop disables the OpenGL Features on random occasions, stating, that it has encountered a problem. This happens either in Two GPU-Mode or One-GPU-Mode.
There's no obvious reason for any errormessage, because IF Open GL is activated it seems to work pretty good, zooming and rotating works quite well and fast. I noticed, that the problem happens either after saving my file or when i open photoshop.
    - Photoshop crashed on several occasions mostly concerning heavy transforming of multiple layers. It simply didn't respond anymore in the midst of the transormation-process.
My guess is, that this is also linked to the GPU/Driver. System-Memory is checked, GPU works like a charm in all other applications. CS3 has not once crashed in one year, so i guess it has to do with the changes made in CS4.
Strange thing is, that even with open GL deactivated, the above written problems occur. I would have thought, that with OpenGL dectivated, Photoshop would somehow become kind of CS3 again, but it seems, there had been to much changes to simply disconnect photoshop from it's new OpenGL interface.
Apart from these two Problems, Photoshop CS4 is doing ok. It feels kind of sluggish compared to older versions, but that might also change with some new drivers.
Sad thing is, that the rotate canvas feature and the extended moverange for images, the main reasons why i upgraded to CS4, are only working with
OpenGL activated. I really hope there will be a fix in the near future.
There are other questions concerning PS CS4's usability:
    - The Scale-Brush Feature uses alt + right mouse buttons, what seems kind of strange when using a stylus (Even more when using a stylus without buttons like the wacom layout-marker).
I would prefer another combination of keyboard shortcuts plus stylus movement ctrl + alt for example. so far i have not found a way to remap the keys. Am i missing something? Or is this impossible?
    - Is there a way to get window behavior back the way it was in CS3? The new way of handling windows is ok, but i liked the old one better. If i disable "floating windows docking" there's no way to maximize a window INSIDE the photoshop workspace. The maximize button on top of every window is right now completely useless because it maximizes the window AND gets rid of all the menus and palettes. I don't see why i want to do that.
That's it. I hope this is useful either for the guys at adobe or for other users. Every new Photoshop-Version has had its problems, i hope that these will just be dealt with like the ones before.
    All the best,
    Pickman

Photoshop CS4 does cause crashes. I can vouch for that too. When it happens, the first instinct is almost always to assume that something is wrong with the computer and start from there. Comments to this effect are prominent in many threads. It is also Adobe's prevalent approach. So people experiencing these problems will tend not to post on these forums. Statements like 'because there are only a few posts, a significant number of people are not experiencing [these] problems' are therefore unfounded. There simply has not been time yet for people to resolve potential hardware/system problems.
In my case, I started experiencing unexplained crashed with CS3 in July (see below) but it was only when Adobe admitted that they could be partly to blame that I posted my experiences (elsewhere) on this forum.
Anyway, to cut a long story short, I have installed Photoshop CS4 on a newly reformatted HDD containing a fresh clean installation of Windows XP/SP3, fully patched, with everything working hunky dory, and no legacy installations of Photoshop or other CS software to worry about. All the same PS CS4 keeps crashing. The symptoms are unexplained total freeze ups occurring at random. I may get several hours use, sometimes a lot less, before I am forced to reboot and start all over again. Certainly the ability to do any useful work is severely compromised, and yes, the first inclination is to blame the hardware or system installation.
The thing is I had been chasing a similar, probably related, problem with CS3 (possibly caused by cloning my system drive, see http://www.adobeforums.com/webx/.59b6bd8d/ ) while Photoshop was still activated, so I have had several months head start over anyone who may now be experiencing similar problems with CS4. As a result, Dell, whose support has been great throughout, have replaced just about every component under the hood of my PC, certainly everything that could be causing a problem. (GPU, CPU, memory, MB, PSU, disk controller, disk cables...). As a result, I am running a virtually brand new computer. Hardware and system problems have been all but eliminated. I have all the latest drivers for everything. It is virtually a brand new computer!
Yet PS/CS4 keeps crashing for no reason that can be established. Adobe have given me lots of homework to do to try to find out what affects it or remedies there are. It is all very tedious, but so far, nothing...
I am coming to the conclusion that there must be something intrinsically wrong with PS/CS4 that makes it incompatible with some systems and software installations, but not necessarily because of any fault with the latter. I have to say that, after initially trying to push me away, Adobe are being very helpful and clearly want (need?) to get to the bottom of this. The trouble is that when the system locks up, it is completely and utterly paralysed, so any diagnostic and error reporting systems are inoperative. This suggests something beneath or beyond Windows, and, if it is not hardware, this points the finger of blame squarely at the activation software, which uses rootkit technology. (Would this be the same on a Mac, I wonder?)
For the record, my system is a Dell Precision 370 desktop with Dell/Phoenix BIOS A08, 3.2GHz Pentium 4 CPU, Intel 925X chipset, 2MB ECC SDRAM, Nvidia Quadro FX3450 graphics, 2x Seagate 146MB Cheetah 5.5k disks (SCSI) in non-RAID configuration. From the limited experience I have had, it seems perfectly capable of running the software (apart from when it crashes, of course.)

  • CS5 MPE nVIDIA Card Question

I've seen the graphic card list recommended for the Mercury Playback Engine.  Everyone wants to know if their card will work.  The GTX285 made the list. I have a GTX280.  Do I get CS5 and cross my fingers?  Some tech evauluation would be great.. for instance.. "don't even try it cause it will it crash and burn" or  "it will work OK but you'll have a 15% reduction in performance."

Grin... I am sort of in the same "wait and see" group... except mine question is "will MPE offer any benefit to non-HD work"?
If an nVidia 285 at $400 does nothing more for SD-to-DVD over a $100 ATI... I will just buy an ATI and save $300
If the 285 does offer rendering benefits for SD only editing... I have to weigh the cost-benefit for me
So... wait and see (read) when CS5 is released

  • CS5/CS4 GUI User Interface Design

I have always been very unimpressed with the user interface design on Adobe CS4.  It's riddled with problems and changes that make no sense and offer no advantages.
For example, there is no longer a normal Windows title bar in many of the CS4 apps.  This makes it much more difficult to maximize/restore applications since normally a Windows user could simply throw the mouse to the top edge of the screen and double click the title bar.  In fact, doing this with CS4 apps has ZERO function (it doesn't do anything).  One would think that by moving the menu commands to the top bar of the window chrome, Adobe would make these menus accessible from the top-most edge of the screen in order to increase usability.  Unfortunately this is not so and clicking the top most edge of a maximized window does nothing.
Two other very important parts of an application user interface are the upper left and upper right corners.  Normally when a Windows application is maximized, throwing your pointer to the upper right corner and clicking will close the application.  Throwing the pointer to the upper left corner and clicking will reveal the application window menu.  This happens in ALL applications... EXCEPT for Adobe CS4 programs.  These two extremely important application window command locations have been completely disabled in Adobe CS4 apps. Clicking the upper most corner pixels in a maximized Adobe CS4 app does nothing.
Then there's the tabbed document window interface.  If you float a document window and maximize that, normally you would expect it to become maximized within the application window as it should.  Au contraire, in Adobe CS4, the document window maximizes itself ON TOP OF the application window, thus obscuring and disabling any access to the application window's tools/commands.  I did report that as a bug during beta, but obviously it was ignored.  Seems kind of obvious to me that the fact that a user could accidentally make the entire application completely unusable by maximizing a document window might be a problem.
It still alludes me as to why Adobe changed the CS4 user interface to something that breaks so many Windows UI conventions.  Adobe CS3 was a practically perfect user interface design on Windows.  It was very customizable, all of the normal Windows functions were properly in place.
What's the deal with the change?
I thought maybe the file menu was moved in place of the title bar in order to make more room for other UI elements, but it's actually pretty much the same size as the old file menu title bar combination in CS3.
With all these changes and with all the functionality losses, what exactly have we gained in the CS4 GUI?  Seriously, I'm asking.
Anyway, I hope Adobe starts reading the Windows User Experience Guidelines (http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa511331.aspx) and brings CS5 back to the way a Windows application should behave.  Proper theme adherence would be nice too.
Which brings me to Windows 7.  I love love love the way Windows 7 groups application document previews in one taskbar icon and allows aero-peek for open windows.  Adobe CS 4 obviously does not support this since it does not have normal document windows.  I hope CS5 does because it is a great feature.  I also hope Adobe CS5 implements the Windows 7 jumplists and maybe even a more touch/multi-touch friendly interface.  I've become pretty good at processing photos in Bridge using the touchscreen, and it's very cool, but it could use some improvements.
For an example of great user interface design, has anyone tried Office 2010 on Windows 7 yet?  http://www.istartedsomething.com/20090512/screencaps-office-2010-technical-preview-teched- 2009-keynote/
The faded transparent title bar and tabbed ribbon interface is absolutely gorgeous.

    @Adam:
I agree with your comments! So well said!
And there are other issues, too -- by the color of the app window, you don't know if the window is active or inactive (focus or not in focus). Titles of panels which are inactive, are dark text over dark background -- hardly readable at all... And many more.
I really hope Adobe are listening...

  • Problems with Playback in CS5, CS4 (gotoAndPlay command)

I've encountered a really frustrating issue a couple times now throughout the past year, both in CS5 and CS4.  I get to a certain point in a project where it just seems Flash does not want to cooperate anymore.  It's difficult to even explain what the issue is because it doesn't seem to  be triggered by one thing in particular, and often produces different results.  It's almost as if the file becomes corrupted.
    Here's what will happen:
*I will create symbols and place each one in its own frame on the main timeline, so that I can see them easily.  The assets will usually contain animation inside the symbol. When I'm working on a particular symbol, I will put a gotoAndStop command on the first frame of the main timeline, pointing it to the symbol I want to test.  So if I'm making a tea kettle, and have placed it on frame 4, I will put a "gotoAndStop(4);" command on the first frame.
*At a certain point, I will start having problems with test movies using this gotoAndStop method, even if I don't change any the scripting.  Sometimes it will turn off layers that aren't supposed to be guides.  Other times it will show me a blank frame.  If I replace the gotoAndStop command with a  stop command on the particular frame I want, my project will display correctly.
If it were a relatively small project, I would deal with it and test everything with the Stop command.  However, this is a fairly big, complex project, and in my experience, this issue seems to contaminate other files that these assets are copied to.
*I've double checked the scripts inside of the symbol, which are all simple "stop();" or "gotoAndPlay("label");" commands, and there's no error showing up in the Output window.
*The most random things will trigger this problem.  Sometimes, it's adding a shape tween to the symbol.  Other times, I could turn off the background layer in the main timeline by making it a guide, and all my other layers would show up.  But this background layer shouldn't affect anything, as it only has a "stop();" command inside.  I was able to fix the problem once by saving the FLA as an Uncompressed Flash Document (xlf).  When I opened the new file, it would play back correctly, but eventually, it'd break again.
I was having similar problems in CS4 on another project.  In one case, we discovered we could fix the problem temporarily by deleting a single tiny line in one of the symbols.  Eventually, it would pop up again, though.  Another time, I could fix it by blowing away all the linkage identifiers, but that doesn't seem to be working this time.
It's very odd.  Anyone have any ideas?

She didn't export it for CS4. If she had it wouldn't be an INDD file. She needs to export to IDML and you need to realize that this document may not look like it does in CS5.
You do need to upgrade if you want to work successfully with this other designer. Worth noting, in case you don't, is that you cannot upgrade individual components of the suite. Personally, I recommend Design Premium as the best bang for the buck.

  • Flash Backwards Compatibility Question

    Hi,
About a year ago I created a project using the Adobe Flash 5.5 Demo.
I need to edit the Flash 5.5 file but my employer only has Adobe Flash 5 so I am not able to edit the 5.5 project using Flash 5.
Question - Can the Flash 6 Demo open a Flash 5.5 file and re-save it as a Flash 5 document?
If I download the latest Adobe Flash 6 Demo will I be able to open the Flash 5.5 file and then save it back as a Flash 5 file so I can edit it using my employers Flash 5 version?

Yes, you can open the file with Flash CS6, and then Save it in format Flash CS5

  • 32-bit photoshop cs5 (cs4) install??

I installed cs5 without looking at specs. After installation, it said I needed cs4.
I uninstalled 5, went back to the DLer and it didn't give me an option for the 32-bit download.
How do I get the DL or cs4? or install it?

Going back a step, what exactly have you downloaded?
    Trial or purchased?
Is it an upgrade or full version? If you've downloaded the CS5 upgrade, you'll need a valid CS4 serial number to install it. If you don't have one, you should download the CS5 full version.
Photoshop only or part of a suite?
Which operating system? 32 bit or 64 bit?
Do you already own Photoshop CS4 or are you starting from scratch?

  • Photoshop CS4 Extended quick question

    Hello,
My question is simple so I'll keep it brief. I'm able to buy Photoshop CS4 Extended via the University I go to, but I would only use the photography features. Does Photoshop CS4 extended work the same way Photoshop CS4 does in that regard, but with just more advanced features for video etc?
In other words, will Photoshop CS4 extended work the same was as Photoshop CS4 would with my photos?

  • Photo loaded into CS4 from Aperture question

In Aperture I wantt to take an NEF into CS4. So I choose Edit - open in CS4. Aperture makes a PSD file and opens CS4. All well and good.
I thought now once in CS4 if I selected Convert To Smart Object I could then click the little icon created what is now Layer 0 and Camera Raw would open and I could edit in Camera Raw? Is this not the case?
If I drag an NEF file onto the CS4 icon in my Dock, CS4 opens and I'm in Camera Raw first. I was hoping to access Camera Raw at times as above though.
    I hope this is clear?
    Thanks all.

If you really only want to import only one image from iPhoto to Aperture, and if you have Aperture 3.3 and iPhoto 9.3 then you can open Aperture and iPhoto at the same time on their respective libraries and simply drag the image in question from the iPhoto Library to the project in Aperture.
However, this will not import the full resolution raw originals but full resolution high quality jpeg previews; if jpeg suffices, you can do this, if you temporarily need a single image only. Also, your captions and keywords will not be imported. Usually you will want to import the original with all your edits and tags, then it would be best to merge the libraries as TD explained.
For one image to import from iPhoto, you could use the command "File > Reveal in Finder > Original" in iPhoto to show the original master file in the Fider window. Then drag this File into the Aperture window. This way you will be importing the master.

  • Cs4 media encoder question

Hello all....I have been holding off upgrading to CS4 production premium from my CS3 suite....mainly as I really am not sure what the benefits would be for my particular workflow.....but one question I need answered is this....I currently use Procoder 3 for all of my encoding needs and am extremely pleased with the results....would upgrading to CS4 make Procoder redundant? or can I bypass the AME (which sounds extremely buggy)any feedback is much appreciated
    cheers
    steve

    Steve,
I have similar concerns about switching over to PP CS4--though I find many of its features enticing.
Obviously, any workaround will cost time and workflow effectiveness. I certainly do not care for the stranglehold they have given AME. That was not a smart design move IMO, and certainly not a smart marketing decision, especially given the level of complaints about AME's slowness and quality issues with some formats. It IS a separate application--so where is the necessity in making it required for PP export.
I presume one could edit/render in a given standard format, run a batch through AME while doing other work in PP, and then batch the the lot through procoder 3 to final format while continuing editing. I may give that a try with the trial version just to judge what the workflow costs are. It would take a lot for me to give up procoder, unless I was convinced that the control and quality levels were the same or better in AME.
