CS5 Exporting Artboards - Auto Naming

Hello, is there a method to set preferences for auto naming (or turning this off) when exporting artboards as jpg's? I like the feature and the ability to export different artboards but I do not want illustrator to automatically add the number to the end of the file, i.e. "-01".
Also it seems that in the Adobe CS4 and CS5 the prrogramers have targeted illustrator towards Flash too much. Everyone is not creating Flash files all of the time and I do develop flash sites but still prefer Fireworks to illustrator. Maybe they are trying to intergrate the Fireworks/Flash features (I am glad they added the editable gradients as Fireworks and Flash has had for years) but in Fireworks, during export, you can choose to auto name or not and Fireworks will not add the nuber if you do not want it to. If I want my image to be "logo.jpg" anf that is what I type in the export dialog then why does illustrator assume I want "logo-01.jpg"?

Thanks Monika but I am not always exporting/saving jpg's for the web (72dpi) and sometimes I need to export at higher resolution so that will not work. I think there needs to be a feature or preference to turn off the auto numbering/naming of files. Iguess for now that does not exist in the standard export.

Exporting artboards. select in document first

On exporting artboards, I`d like to be able to shift select multiple artboards in the document window, or shift select in the artboard palette prior to export... instead of clicking the "use artboards" range function,

I'm assuming that you have the flip4mac codec installed?
If so, you have the free version which will only permit the first 30 seconds to be exported. If you want more, you'll have to pay!
However visualhub also exports wmv, so I'd weigh up the differences between flip4mac pro and visualhub if you want to continue exporting wmv's.

In trial mode you can export ½ the duration of your source file up to 30 seconds. In addition, a watermark will be placed on any files that you import until you upgrade to Player Pro.

Use a video thumbnail submenu for the first submenu, add the auto chapters, then use the chapter index feature:

Then make each submenu animate buttons. (Perhaps that last step can be done after the first submenu is added; not sure about that.)

Auto naming files in Acrobat 9 Std

Is there a way to have files that are scanned to Acrobat 9 Std, auto named?
I find that the default name "untitlted" is causing problems... especially over-writing the last untitled file...
Any help?

Scan to TIFF in the application that came with your scanner and then import the tiffs. Not what you asked, but a better workflow. Many scanners will scan to file and autonumber them.

Exporting Artboards = Artboard size + 1px

I have troubles exporting artboards in png file :
I am making artboard of 100px by 100px in order to make a button when I export it (in 72 DPI) the result is 101px by 101px.
So how can I export in the size i define the artboard ?

Hey, I had this same issue even in Illustrator CC 2014. I was looking around and as far as I know, it hasn't been solved, so I thought I should share my findings. Not exactly "fixing" it, but you get what you want.
Dump out artboards as separate illustrator files:
     1. Open your .ai file with all of your artboards
     2. File>Save As
     3. Browse to an empty folder on your desktop or something and hit save
     4. Make sure "Save each artboard as a separate file" is checked and hit ok
          ~Wait for all of the artboards to export to illustrator files
Create an action for batching those illustrator files
     1. Open an illustrator file with an artboard in it
     2. go to Window>Actions
     3. Create a new Action,name it something, and hit record
     4. Go to File>Save for Web
     5. Make sure "Clip to Artboard" is checked on, it is the file type you want, and hit save
     6. Save the file anywhere you want (you can delete it afterwards)
     7. Stop recording
     8. Toggle the Dialog off for the action (in the Actions Window, second column by the checkmark)
     9. Click the Options button in the upper right of the Actions Window, and select Batch at the bottom
     10. Choose your source folder (The folder you dumped the illustrator files into)
     11. Check "Override Action "Export" Commands"
     12. Choose an empty folder for your pngs to be dumped into.
     13. Make sure the Destination is set to Save and Close, and hit OK
          ~Wait for it to Batch your illustrator files.
That should be all you need to do to get your artboards exported to pngs without that annoying 1px error. Not the quickest thing in the world, but still way faster than saving every single artboard for web, one at a time.

why CS5 export to QuickTime request connection to internet?
When I'm not connect to internet and I try to export to QuickTime then CS5 tell me of to check if QuickTime's installed, but if I'm connect to internet the export work fine ... why?
and do exist a mode for by pass this?

FWIW, I know the work around, export to iTUNES, drag to desktop (if preferences are set up right, in iTUNES) it will be a AIFF file.
Just want to know why quicktime is greyed out unless of course it needs video or images in order to work as export to quicktime!

ITunes to include SxxExx to the auto naming process

I'm using iTunes to manages my media library. I'm having difficulties with the auto naming associated with TV programmes, is there a way to allow iTunes to name the file so it includes SxxExx?

You're not talking to Apple here. Use iTunes feedback for that.
Are you refering to the naming of the episode within iTunes, or the file on disc?
In principle TV Shows are grouped on the Show field and within a show sub-grouped on Season No. In practice recent builds of iTunes and/or Apple TV/iOS firmware seem to be taking account of Album, Artist & Album Artist in certain views. For consistency I therefore suggest the following approach:
Show = Album = <Show Name>
e.g. "Heroes"
Artist = Album Artist = <Show Name> or <Show Name> Cast (or something like that)
e.g. "Heroes Cast"
Season No. = <Season No.> or <Blank> (Separate seasons or all listed together)
e.g. 1-2
Episode ID = s##e## (This field, sorted alphabetically, controls order)
e.g. s01e01 - s02e34 (use s##e### when >99 episodes - I prefer to use absolute episode no. here)
Episode No. = Track No. = <Absolute Episode No.>
(Can also be per season, but abs. is better) e.g. 1 - 34
Disc No. = <Season No.> (Can be set even if merging seasons)
e.g. 1-2
Taking this approach you can always merge or split into individual seasons simply by clearing or setting the Season No. field.

For general tips on organizing media in iTunes see Grouping tracks into albums. Note that sort fields should not be used to link things with different main values.
If you use the scheme above, and you let iTunes manage the media files, you may find they are renamed in a way that suits your needs better.

CS5: Export "Use Artboards"-problems

Hi everybody!
I have recently installed Illustrator CS5. I had CS4 before, so I know how to handle Artboards.
What bothers me on the one hand (already in CS4) is that if I have only ONE Artboard, and I export it (the "Use Artboard" checked), AI automatically adds a "01" on the name of my file (i.e.: example-01.tif)! And when I want to overwrite it the next time, I cannot simply click on the file(-name), because then I get a new file (i.e. named example-01-01.tif). That is absolutely annoying and bad for my workflow! I often have to check my file by exporting it first and then seeing if it's ok (for further use in an other program).
The other now occuring problem in CS5 is, that AI does NOT remember my last choice to check the "Use Artboards"-checkbox, like it had before in CS4! So I now have to check it everytime I export my file again and again!
Has anybody maybe a kind of script or some other good idea to solve my two problems?

Well done! The action-idea works pretty good! I never had thought about this solution, because I couldn't image that AI can also "record" the naming-process (and the name). So infact: I now am able to overwrite my working file. Very cool!
And the other idea about this preferences-file-thing: yes! But I coulnd't find it yet! If anybody could tell me, which tag in which file I would be more grateful than I am already!

CS5 exporting TIF from EPS appends artboard name to the file name

We have recently upgraded to CS5 from CS3. We routinely create EPS files, then export them to TIF's for final use. Previously I used the CROP MARKS tool to set the specific visual size of the art. Without the crop marks, when exporting to a TIF the exported file clips to the edges of the bounding box. In the event I have vertical lines at the outside limits of the drawings they stand the possibilitiy of getting "clipped" or dropped off when the resulting TIF is printed or placed in another document. I understand the ARTBOARDS have replaced the crop marks setting. If I create an art board, rename it as MYTAK4 ARTBOARD and then export from the EPS to a TIF, having the radio button "artboard" checked, the resultant TIF file becomes FILENAME_MYTAK4_ARTBOARD.tif. With the hundreds of files that we create and continually revise, it is important that the any files we revise, maintain the same file name, not another file with same base name, with an appended artboard name tacked on before the TIF extension. The only solution I have arrived at is to RENAME the file once the TIF is exported to remove the unwanted artboard portion of the name. Anyone have a better solution?

Illustrator CS5 - Export to PDF no longer uses Artboard as page boundary

We are running into an issue where Illustrator files saved as PDFs (with editing capabilities) are having their page sizes cropped when re-opened in Acrobat. If the PDF file is re-opened in Illustrator then re-saved using Save As (overwriting the original) the resulting PDF will then have the full 8.5 x 11 page displayed. If we then open, make a minor change and then save the resulting PDF becomes cropped again.
This is happening on both Mac and Windows XP machines. If anyone has any ideas on why this is happening I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks for the replies guys. I have been able to reproduce the behavior using a new, basic file.
My test system is running 10.6.8 with Illustrator 15.0.2 and Adobe Reader 10.1.0.

Wade - I tried your suggestion of opening each in Acrobat 9 Pro (9.4.1) and the properties show that the page size on the original is 8.5" x 11" (where we are trying to keep it) and the cropped one is 8.35" x 6.61". I haven't tried the Acrobat forum since the issue only seems to happen when saving from Illustrator as a PDF. I will go there now and see what I can find.

Problem exporting artboards

I am having problem when trying to open files after having exported from multiple artboards from Adobe Illustrator CS5. I received the following message when trying to open the PNG in Photoshop and Fireworks:
'Could not complete your request because the file-format module cannot parse the file solved'
The strange thing is that I can open the files in Illustrator but not on any other software, including Bridge.
Does anyone have a fix?

Thanks for response! It's not the player's problem (it's mpc btw), I import it into Premiere for post editing and it's disaster to see the failed rendering.
Mmm need time/Everest to find out the system info. Generally render setting is just straightforward AVI lossless/best quality with no codec assigned.

Auto naming logic for ID graphic objects

Can anyone tell me what logic is used for the naming of JPG/PNG images that are generated for InDesign-drawn boxes, line, ovals, groups, etc?
In other words, if you draw a circle in InDesign, anchor this to the text, output as reflowable EPUB, unzip the EPUB, and look in the oebps\image folder, you'll see an image named something like 2022.jpg. I'm trying to determine the logic behind this naming, as I need to reuse these images for something else.

Here is what I need this for: I've got a large scripting project where a health care client has 2500+ ID files that are very regular in their layout, structure, use of styles, etc. They need to get the content from these documents, along with the simple layout (h1, h2, h3, body, etc) into various CMS. Some of the CMS ingest HTML, some XML, etc. I've written a series of scripts that help a user quickly check/cleanup/"normalize" a document, and then export to html/xml per the specifications of the CMS.
For various reasons, I'm using InDesign's HTML export engine as the starting point, so it creates a "web-resources" folder and dumps the images in there. We need to dump the images that are generated from each document's export into a common images folder. We can be guaranteed that the placed image filenames are unique. But it looks like the auto-generated filenames from the UID will not likely always be unique, so I'll probably add a timecode or something to the filename to ensure that it is unique.
This is a very unique and challenging project. I'm having fun with it.
