CS5 Fussiness

Ok, there are several items to list here, again, like CS4, enough to raise the question "Do I want to buy this?"
First, Keyboard shortcuts. I see no way to, from the GUI, import shortcuts from, say, the CS3 folder to CS5. In fact, I see no path to do so, even if you have saved the changes in CS5. So, I looked to Help, which brings us to:
Second. I click Help. Immediately I am swamped with updates. I say Later. I type in Import Keyboard Shortcuts. Ooops! No "Go" or any enabling command whatsoever. So I go to Help for help. Instant freezeup because I decided to allow the Community Help pdf to d/l. I cannot minimize, I cannot get back to Photoshop. So I kill the process for help. Nice!
Third, and this one really fries me:
I select Crop and make a crop. A"Helpful" cropping grid, called rule of thirds drops a grid. I don't want it so I change to None. and start using the arrow keys to move the crop. Crap! It runs the dammed dialog box between choices. I click on the title bar for the image. No dice. I click outside the image. No dice. Finally, I move the crop with the mouse and now the arrow keys work.
I looked for a way to disable the damn dialog but it doesn't seem available.
Get rid of it or at least, an option to disable it!  At least save the damn settings selected. It reverts to Rule of Thirds each time I open PS
This is noticeable on any tool that has options in the menu. The keys are pointed to  moving that stuff around and extra steps are necessary to refocus the keys to the workspace.
I don't like it.
Workflow, workflow, workflow. Don't mess with it!
I want Help to actually help. Type in a search item, get answers, either a mouse click or "Enter". Like CS3.
I am currently finding this on the 32 bit installation on XP Pro. I do know the menu changes with arrow keys problem also exists in the 64 bit on Win7.

When I shoot for Panorama stitching, I always allow a little extra for the initial cropping. But sometimes, to preserve the expansive look I want from the finished images, I am forced to add some missing blue sky in areas.
Having said that I temper it with the view that the larger view might be improved by a heavy crop on one side or both to achieve a better finished image that is truely focused on the main subject. This can make an item worth displaying and possibly selling. However, I do preserve the original RAW files, and each file during the development stage. This way I can go back to any stage if a fix was missed.
As an example of heavy cropping to improve an image, take a look at the opening page of my Weebly web site that was mandated by the college Photoshop class I am taking. The header shows the full panorama, and below it is a crop from that image that I believe to be better for this being done.

The eye should always be on what makes a stronger image.

Subject: Re: CS5 Fussiness
Agreed, and I have tried a number of approaches with filling panoramas. The worst approach is to run all four edges at once. Much better to do it in sections but still there are surprises to fix.
When I compared a reasonably accurate fill version with simple cropping of the original, I found you have gained something...a lot more work!
But if cropping makes problems in that important detail has to go, then chew away with with CA. Just watch out for those repeated patterns. For me, it's either there or it's not.

  • CS5 Duplex Printing Alignment OFF

    Hello there,
I am running into a problem. Here is the situation:
I am using Adobe CS5 and am making booklets to print in which I have 4 pannels per physical page(legal). The top two are up-side-down so that when folded, the pages are proper. The printer being used has automatic duplexing, but the problem is, when it is used the back side of each page is 4mm lower than the front side. In addition to this, the upper two pannels on the physical page are 4mm closer to the top of the page than the bottom pannels are to the bottom of the page. However, on the computer, everything is centered. It is only when it is printed that the alignment is off.
I asked somebody about this and they said that there may be a setting in CS5 specifically for booklets as such that may help, but I haven't found anything yet. If you happen to know the answer, I would really appreciate the help.
    Thanks

Sorry, I don't know about your particular printer but the problems are pretty standard.  The trick is to go through your print settings very thoroughly as there are usually 2 places to set some items... one is to the printer driver and one is for generic print settings and sometimes they conflict or you must use one or the other to suit your needs.
From InDesign you hit 'print' then it will pop up an interface that will contain your printer's name at the top and a series of tabs, one of which will be 'setup' and in there you will find general positional settings and sheet size.  This is the best place to set them for me.  At the bottom of this tab is a 'printer' button which will access the specific settings for your printer.  There can be several levels here with repetition of items from the top menu.  If you don't see your specific printer listed then you may not have all the relevant drivers loaded.
I am not a printer expert, but in my experience the usual problem is understanding that these menus can be illogical and interact with each other so you may need to do some fiddling and experimentation.  Be fussy with sheet sizes, make sure your paper and ALL the settings match.
As for print to edge.... hmmmmm possibly same issue, but you might need oversize sheet depending on printer abilities.

  • Tell if CS5 or CS5.5 at a glance?

Is there a way to know if an After Effects Project File is CS5 or CS5.5 at a glance? I mean by just clicking on the info or something? (Running a Mac). I have 5.5 and I down save them to 5 to send them to people and I was wondering if there was a faster way to tell than just opening every single file and checking it in AE. Thanks!

If you open an AEP file in a text editor like BBEdit you can actually
see which version of AE created it by looking in the meta data at the
    end of the file:
    <xmp:CreatorTool>Adobe After Effects CS5.5 10.5 Macintosh 64</xmp:CreatorTool>
I can't find anything in the file that shows which version of file it
    was saved as, though...
Opening a binary file like this in a text editor always comes with a
risk of you accidentally changing something that will make your file
    corrupt, so be careful.

  • DW CS5 will not open pages from local view sidebar

Using the latest DW and having a major issue. Sites are visible through manage sites; all is fine with settings. However, when I open a site to edit, if I try to click on the right side (local view) to open the html pages, DW gives me an error message - for example -  "HD/user/site/xxxx.html not found" but if I open the file from the menu, it opens. I can edit but not "put" the file or add to the remote server manually. I thought one of the site's files was corrupt but then I realized it's happening for all my sites (which work fine on my laptop - also running same version of DW). Is one of the DW settings off? Should I reinstall? Has anyone encountered this issue? Thanks in advance.

Well, I don't have CS5 and I've never seen this problem before, but I would start with deleting and then re-creating the site definition.

  • After Effects CS5.5 Wont Open - Application Just Bounces In The Dock.

    Hi all,
I appear to have encountered a problem with After Effects... I was working on a project earlier today which usalizes a VideoCopilot plug-in called Element 3D. After a quick break I came back to the project and attempted to load in the 'Free Earth Project' by VideoCopilot. (http://www.videocopilot.net/blog/2012/08/free-earth-project-for-element-3d/). As their site suggests, I had to place a downloaded project folder called 'Earth' into Element 3D's 'My_Models' folder. Immediately after this I tried loading After Effects and encountered the issue. I'm not sure if it's couincidence or directly related which is why I am posting here.
After Effects does nothing but bounce in the Dock. When I right-click the application I'm met with a 'Force Quit' option, and a message saying "Application not responding". I'm on OS X 10.7.4. I'm not able to tell you what version of AE I'm running, only that it's CS5.5, as I cannot lanch it to find out. All other Adobe products work with no problem.
I have already contacted the support team at VideoCopilot and they have sent me an updated build of Element 3D in an attempt to resolve the issue, unfortunately though this did not work. Addiitonally, I have tried booting into Safe-Mode and tried to launch the application from there, as well as using Disk-Utility to 'Repair Permissions'. All of these steps have failed to get AE working again.
If anyone knows of a way to fix this I would be most grateful. I'm working to a very tight deadline and am afraid that I will miss it. Additionally, if anyone has any fixes that doesn't require reinstalling applications that'll be a bonus!
I've also attached a crash-report to this post incase it's of any use in determining the cause of the problem (I couldn't find a way to attach it directly, so the file is hosted on my website - I apologise in advance if this is against forum rules!) -  http://www.starfireindustries.org.uk/uploads/8/6/6/1/8661295/ae_error_report.rtf
    Thanks in advance,
    John.

  • HELP! Upgrade purchasing to CS5 (or poss 5.5)

    Hi all
We have a problem at my place of work.  We have two computers which need to have the same version of CS on (currently CS2).
For a reason I won't try to explain one licence for an upgrade from CS2 to CS5 was purchased a while ago.  Recently someone tried to buy another licence so we could upgrade both computers but we end up with a CS5 to CS 5.5
Now, we have a big problem.  We need to either buy another CS2 to CS5 or a CS2 to CS5.5
There was a very short return period on the cs5 to 5.5 purchase so we cannot return it.
The only option as far as I can see is to purchase another CS2 to CS5 upgrade (thus wasting the CS5 to 5.5).  I also thought now 5.5 is out CS2 to CS5 would be cheaper.  However I cannot even find that upgrade anymore.
Can anyone help and tell me if they know where to get it??
    Thank you
PS We are on PC not mac

There is no such thing. Adobe always plucks all legacy versions from the market whenever there is a new version coming out and for that same reason there is no discounted older upgrades. So unless you can find a authorised reseller who may still have a dusty CS5 physical upgrade package on his shelf this is going nowhere, I'm afraid. I don't really see a problem here, though - you can buy valid upgrades from CS2 to CS5.5. So what's the hold-up?

  • A pdf document created in cs5 cannot be printed in duplex on a pc without cs5 or adobe reader pro

    Hi!
there is a "normal" cs5 created pdf document.
the installed cs5  pc -> i can print in duplex on every printer, without cs5 installed duplex printing not possible.
I am searching for a solution to print the pdf document in duplex mode on every printer, but only with the latest freeware version adobe xi 11.0.3.
(If i install adobe cs4 on a pc it is possible to print the document in duplex mode on a hp3525 printer, but duplex is not possible on a ricoh printer for example mpc5502.)
I cant upload the file, because its bigger than 2 mb. (5mb)
Is there anybody out there for help.
If you need the file, i´ll send 2 u.
    thx

Yep, it definitely is a complicated workflow... But I'm not really sure of any other way to get from the 34" wide pattern to the home-sewing version which is split into pages and has alignment marks and whatnot. I'm very much an amateur that has figured it out as I went
I went through the page in the photo pretty thoroughly with the layer panel and I couldn't find any mystery lines... But I did find something interesting; when I click on any of the pattern lines, it shows the whole line of the pattern piece, which extends well past the edge of the artboard. So when I'm printing the poster-sized PDF to 7.5x10 pages, it's keeping all the anchor points of a line even if only a small piece of that is on the actual page.
Does this help? I've included the page in the photo as well http://www.putlocker.com/file/DADB4759DBB860D8
    Thanks again to everyone!
Also, should I be keeping all the files I'm editing as .ai files and then only exporting to PDF for the very final product? I was doing that at first, but then using .pdf for the whole process didn't seem to make any difference.

  • CS5 (or 4)  Timecode in audio!

Is CS5/4  able to show timecode in audio .wavs (anywhere/anyhow) ?
Yesterdays shoot- Free run timecode specifically set to record in double system set up and now I can not find anyway to see the audio time code!

Tell me this not fact and there is some way to extract the info...please.
    Maybe a third party application?

Good points, Tim--and I can definitely confirm that the Premiere team cares about the product. I've been contacted several times recently by team members, either in response to a post here on the forums or a feature request or a bug report. One of my feature requests got a personal reply, with a mention that a lot of PPro users had been requesting the same feature, but it was proving more difficult to implement than was originally expected. Nevertheless, there was a level of commitment intimated that assured me they were going to make it work, come hell or high water. I appreciate that--that lets me know they're listening to the most pressing usability and functionality (and stability) concerns and addressing them. Of course, not everything can happen the way we'd like, and that's just what we need to keep in mind.
It's features like the dual-system support that present one of those "chicken or egg" conundrums. Premiere is going to start popping up on more pros radars, whether they like it or not, and Adobe has to take that seriously. Do you attract potential new customers with all the sweet new features you've got, and risk losing them forever when they find out you don't have what they need, or do you alienate a gigantic sector of your user base that wants more effects and transitions, and focus your efforts on functionality that most of the user base would find yawn-inducing and decry as "not for me?" It's a critical time for Adobe, and certainly not an enviable one! I'm glad I'm not one of the product managers right now
Nevertheless, I'd imagine that for most of the current user base, Premiere does 98% of what they need--that's based on what I know I need, and what Premiere provides. But there's that nagging 2% area where any experienced editor--and typically anyone trying to use Premiere to earn a living--grumbles and says, "C'mon, already... get with the program." I guess if it worked 100%, we'd get bored easy because we wouldn't be able to spend all our time finding workarounds What would be the fun of that?

  • CS5 or Pc  Slow performance?

Hi there,I have a problem with my pc at work and because I am not quite sure in which one is exactly the problem I decide to ask you.The pc is intel pentium 4 with 3 Gb Ram  XP professional service pack 3 Photoshop CS 5.
The pc is connected to server(data base). When I open a bunch of photos (20-30) approximately 8 - 12 MB each one and sometimes I experience a slow performance(for example I am trying to retouch/clone something and it takes a lot of time for the pc to redraw/respond) the interesting part is that it doesn't happen always(sometimes can be even 3 photos and it will take ages to do something) also I notice that after appr. 20 minutes it's suddenly start to work as it should normally(it's like there was an update and when is updated/complete everything is fine). When that start to happen today I restart CS5 and load the same photos and it work fine, so it is really bizarre for me.I put a 89% ram usage to the CS5(I pretty much use only all the time Photoshop and bridge )   also made the history steps to 7 and the cache to 6 for big and flat files.I was checking the Efficiency and it's all the time 100 % so it's like it's not the photoshop but like I said today i just restard the ps and upload the same photos and got fix...I tried to copy the photos on my hard drive(so it should not be affect of the performance of the server but still the same as when I take them straight from the server.Because the hard drive is only 80 gb ( I don't store anything there )   i did clean up and disk defragment still  the same situation.Do you know what can be the problem and is it the Photoshop or the Pc?I'll appreciate it.
    Thank you

Could be that your PC is sometimes looking to check things on the server, and maybe the server or network is busy/bogged down and you PC gets caught in that cycle mess.....so,
suggest next time you use Ps, set win performance monitor perfmon.exe or perfmon.msc ; setup to view graph of disk use and network activity and cpu usage.....then you may see/track a problem area.
on win7, task manager does most of the same stuff

  • CS5 or Elements for Drawing?

hello everyone. I know this doesn't sound original but I have yet to find an answer so I came here. I am hoping to get a Wacom Bamboo Fun tablet soon and it includes Adobe Elements 8. I am an artist and browsing around places like DeviantArt i find that most digital artists use the program CS5 or something like that. So here's my question: is CS5 or Elements better for drawing? I'm seriously thinking about getting CS5 but i don't want to waste my money if Elements is just as good. Please help me out!!

Elements is more limited in how to adjust the colors to black-and-white.
Lightroom has more sophisticated adjustments.  These adjustments are the same as in the Camera Raw plug-in for Photoshop, but absent in the Camera Raw plug-in for Elements.  The adjustments allow you to enhance the contrast and brightness of the gray-level for narrow ranges of original colors instead of a simple removal of color with a default color-balance or clicking on a preset that Elements has.
Here is a very verbose video introduction to the LR B/W conversion on an example photo, viewed best in full-screen HD:
    http://www.luminous-landscape.com/tutorials/bw_workflow_in_lightroom.shtml
Here is a step-by-step example with screenshots and description, from 2008, but the adjustments still mostly apply, except the vignetting you’d use wouldn’t be lens-related, it’d be the Post-Crop Vignetting in the Effects section that didn’t exist back in 2008:
    http://layersmagazine.com/create-stunning-black-and-white-images-in-lightroom.html
These were just the first and third links that showed up after Googling for Lightroom Black and White.
BTW, I am a photo-hobbyist and use Lightroom every day, so it’s not just for professionals making money off their photos that need something fast.  For me it is more about seriousness and perfection and freedom.

  • CS5 or CS5.5?

I have CS5 on my Mac laptop and my Imac at work. I was sent the upgrade to 5.5 but am not sure whether to load it. Two times I was sent a file from someone else asking for my design help and I am getting a missing plug in error when I try to open the InDesign file. First time I totally recreated the project and didn't bother with the file that wouldn't open. If I upgrade my laptop to 5.5 and not my mac at work, I'm afraid my laptop won't work smoothly with my work Mac like it does now. Need advise! I know about having clients save their InDesign files to IDML but will that open smoothly in my CS5 at work.

A bit of a warning for anyone reading this thread:
If you have CS5 (not sure about previous versions) and decide to use the trial version of CS5.5 for 30 days to see how you like it, but decide to stay with CS5  you will run into a major problem with any files you created in InDesign CS5.5. You absolutely CAN'T open any of your INDD files created in CS5.5 with CS5. It doesn't matter if you try to open the file from within InDesign CS5 or right-click on the file and choose "open with". It also doesn't matter if you have all of the latest plugins.
Trust me. I learned the hard way. After a bit of research I found that the only way to open all of the InDesign files I created within the last 30 days was to save them as IDML files in CS5.5. It was a little late for that considering the fact that my CS5.5 trial had expired.
Fortunately, I was able to download the trial version of InDesign CS5.5 by itself (even after completing a trial for CS5.5 Standard) under my existing account. I now have to open up all of my INDD files created in CS5.5 and export them as IDML (InDesign Markup Language) files so that I can open them with CS5 (seen below). I guess I'll get to that before this trial reaches it's expiration date as well!
Surely this will be corrected soon . . . in the meantime, if anyone has a better solution, please share!
