CS5 hangs when choosing submenu tools?

I have a brand new i7 MBP 17", running brand new CS5 Photoshop, and I'm having issues where the application will hang (for a few seconds, 4-8 seconds probably) when I do particular simple tasks...
An example is if I just open a brand new document, and click>hold on say, the Dodge tool, (to select the Burn tool), as soon as I move my mouse cursor over the Burn tool, and click it (to select from the submenu popup thing) PS then hangs for a good 3-5 seconds. It doesn't do a spinning wheel or anything, and the mouse moves fine, just PS itself is frozen for a few seconds, then it unfreezes and I have to select the tool again, but then it selects just fine.
This will also occur every once in a while with layer selection, but it happens on every single '2nd level' tool in the main toolbar menu on the left side. It's extremely annoying!
I've uninstalled PS CS 5, reinstalled... I even downloaded the trial from adobe, installed that just to make sure it wasn't something quirky with my installer... same issue exactliy the same every time.
I have installed the 12.0.1 update, and that doesn't seem to do anything, FYI.
Is this just me? Or does anyone have any suggestions? There's plenty of RAM allocated to PS, and it's an i7 2.66Ghz brand new MBP with 4GB of memory... so I'm certain it isn't a computer limitation!
Thanks in advance,
Nick

Wahooo!  I think I found the problem with the hang on choosing submenus.  Thanks Chris and Jeffrey for you rapid responses on this issue.
The source of the slow down is a great little utility of OS X called "RightZoom" by blazingtools.   It's a cool app that lets intercepts clicks in application and folder windows on the expand button and opens the window corner to corner of the screen.  It works well but sometimes does not play nice with application interfaces.  I actually need a better brain cause I had an issue related with Illustrator CS4 and selecting with the direct selection tool.
There are two options to correct the delay:
1.  Disable Right Zoom.  - you can kill the task using activity monitor, then go to your System Prefs > Accounts > Log in items and remove RightZoom from the list.
2. You can add Photoshop to the RightZoom application exceptions list.  Kill RightZoom, find the RightZoom app in your applications folder and hold the Command key down, then double click to launch which will open the configuration window.  To add an application to the list of exceptions, it has to be running.  So Launch Photoshop if it is not running and then you will see it as an option to Except.
I am likely just behind the times on the second issue mentioned, which is that the keystroke shortcuts listed in submenus don't have qualifier keys.  Like "shift" + B to toggle through the brush options, for example.
Thanks, James.

  • CS5 Hangs when editing photo from LR4

Group - I just got off the phone with Adobe support and they indicated this problem is a known problem in LR4 and suggested getting help from the experts at Adobe Labs.
I was part of the LR4 beta test and never experienced this before.
The problem occurs when I try to edit a photo in CS5 from LR4 (using the 'edit in' link) on a Mac.
CS5 opens and then just hangs (my mac indicates that CS5 is not responding) and I have to use 'Force Quit.'
Are there any work-arounds.  The Adobe help center indicated that the 4.1 beta may not have this problem, but they couldn't recommend it.
I tried accessing CS5 from Bridge and that produced the same 'hang' problem.
    Thanks for your help.

  • Photodownloader in Photoshop CS5 freezes when choosing a directory

This just recently happened in the last week. When I insert my CF card in my card reader and Adobe Bridge CS5 and photo downloader opens up, it hangs when I try to change the location where to download the files to. So in photodownloader, I select the Choose button in the top left of the attached image, the finder dialog comes up. At this point the photodownloader and dialog hang. I need to go into the Activity Monitor and kill the photodownloader. If I do not change the location, i.e. hit the Choose button, everything else works fine and I can download the images of the CF card. I spoke with Adobe and they feel its something within the OS/Finder.
Any thoughts/help/etc..... would be appreciated. I also tried rebooting, my default directory is on a 1.5TB firewire 800 drive. I unmounted and disconnected it, rebooted and photofinder went to the default Pictures directory. Same thing, freezes. I also tried my iPhone plugged in to download photos and it hang also.
    Thanks,
    K

Not sure if this is quite the same problem, but there is a discussion on the Adobe Bridge support forum about something very similar. This happened to me too. It seems that there is a bug in the latest Camera Raw update. It is weird because everything seemed to work OK for a while and then broke just as you describe.
The solution offered there which I found worked OK so far was to revert from the latest Camera Raw update (v.6.5) to the previous one (v.6.4), which I did via Time Machine going back to pre October 18th 2011 (I think), which is roughly when I last updated.
Look up the Adobe forum if you need to know how to find the file - it took me a while to get the right folder and without checking I wouldn't like to commit myself to the correct directory.

  • Indesign CS5 hangs when resizing text box

I have looked at 20 pages of discussion and not found an answer.
Every time I resize a text box Indesign will hang. It's a 380 page book, not every text box but some and the problem includes adding or deleting lines to make text move to a different page. Of course, the text is imported from a word doc.
I have done all the usual stuff, checked and removed fonts, deleting preferences and cashes, exporting as an interchange doc and reopening. Nothing works.

First, thanks to all who responded to my problem. My first time using the forums.
It seems the footnotes are the problem causing ID to hang when text is reflowed.
I have published longer books with longer text threads with no problem, but that was with CS1 and no footnotes. I upgraded to CS5 in December.
Previous books have had footnotes at the end, which makes them endnotes I guess, but for this book the client wanted footnotes on the bottom of the page on which they occur.
I broke the thread and I'm replacing the text boxes two pages at a time. Format them like I want, than place two more. This way all text which is reflowed is hidden and not really reflowed. After several hours and almost a hundred pages, no hangs or spinning beach balls.
My system is a 24" iMac with OSX 10.6.6 and 4 GBs of RAM.
I've not worked with cross references and it sounds like I don't want to.
    Once again, thanks!

    1. unistall CS5 package , reinstall CS5 package Production Premium. Reinstall all updates. Still get the problem.
    2. Problem seems to be pop-up screen do not accept any 'click' to input answer to Encore CS5
    3. Premiere Pro CS5 working fine
    Please help.
    TT

Thanks again pointing out the  Adobe CC Cleaner URL
When I said CCleaner previously, I was refering to a program that clean out garbages from PC (broken links, shortcuts, temp files, etcetera..)
But late on, I have found out Adobe CC Cleaner (for Creative Cloud and CS5, CS6...) for cleaning Adobe craps after un-install.
I just wish the hotline could mention it and not having me to swim to find out that tool does exists saving some precious time.
Here is the status and what I have done to fix the problem:
...yeah, I was shooting in the dark...
    1. Uninstall completely Adobe Premiere Production CS5 (remove preferences)
    2. Run Adobe CCleaner (choose "all")
    3. Shutdown PC, reboot and Cleanup and Defragment C: drive
    4. Re-install completely Adobe Premiere Production CS5 (all products)
    5. Re-apply completely Adobe Premiere Production CS5 (all products)
(note: for some reason, I need to do it three times to get the complete updates done, just retry and no changes between retry)
    6. Result : PremierePro still working fine, still hangs on Encore
(Encore dialog screen was frozen as before from the begining and I had to use "Window-Task-Manager" to "end-the-task" of Encore)
7.Conclusion: the problem is on the PC not AdobePremiereProduction
    8. Decision: Restore previous checkpoint of Window-7 Professional components
    9. Redone steps 1,2,3,4,5
    10. The result is the same as mentioned in point 6 and the conclusion is the same as mentioned in point 7.
    11. Ultimate Decision: Ground-zero style resfresh (see the follwoing steps)
    12. Separate Data from Window-7 (Move out all data from PC and unplug all connected portable hard drives
    13. Factory restore of Window-7 Professional using DVD-rescue (hard drive C: wiped out and reformatted)
    14. Apply all Updates for Window-7 Professional (over 121 updates, over 700Mb and many shutdown-reboot)
    15. Reconfigure Wireless for connecting to Internet
    16. Re-Install McAfee Antivirus
    17. Re-Install some usefull Softwares (Microsoft Office 2010 Professional, etcetera... Shareport for wireless USB Printer)
    18. Lot of Canon and Sony Softwares not re-installed because not used and not needed for now
    19. Clean install AdobePremiereProduction CS5 (no need to run Adobe CCleaner)
    20. Apply all updates for AdobePremierProduction CS5 (result is intermittent and have to retry few times to get it completed)
    21. Apply one by one updates for every single Adobe product to get it done\
    22. Shutdown and cleanup C: drive and defragment C; drive
    22. From now on, I am sure to have a FRESH an CLEAN PC with  a CLEAN CS5
    23. RESULT: AdobePremierePro-CS5 still working perfectly AS BEFORE

  • Adobe Media Encoder CS5 hangs when adding files of varying HD resolutions.

I've seen questions similar to this related to CS4 but never explained very well, and my CS4 for mac worked fine.  I am unsure if this is a new problem or a windows specific problem but here is the situation, if you need more information I will gladly provide it.
For the past week or so I have been encoding 1920x1080i mov files (h.264/aac) to 1280x720p (vp6/mp3) flvs.  When I stick to that single HD format in the AMC processing que everything works great. However, when I add older HD content into the AMC que, content with non-standard presets, the program hangs.  I tried to import about 15 files last night and the program just sat there all night in a '...NOT RESPONDING' state.  The video's have different audio and video settings and it's little difficult to pinpoint exactly what they were.  Some are 1440x1080, some are 1280x900, some have PCM audio some of mp3.
Now I temporarily resolved this issue by simply using cs4 master on my mac pro which worked great.  However I have noticed a huge speed increase in CS5 64bit AMC.  It takes 2-3 hours to encode 1 flash video on my mac pro (dual quad core xeon 2.9Ghz/32GB ram) with CS4.  It takes ~20 minutes on my windows 7 station (single core 2 quad 3Ghz/8GB ram) with CS5.
    How to replicate:
If I drop a single file into the AMC CS5 que, regardless of the resolution, frame rate, or sound codec; it will import.  If I then add another file with a different resolution AMC will hang and become non-responsive.  It never crashed but I can't wait 12+ hours to see if it accepted a job or not.  As I said before this problem was not observed on CS4 for mac - it worked flawlessly, albeit a little slow.
    Software used:
Adobe Media Encoder CS5 windows 64bit
Adobe Media Encoder CS4 mac 32bit
    System specs:
    Windows 7 home:
    Core 2 quad 3Ghz
    8GB ram
    80GB SSD x25-m
    nVidia Quadro 580
    OSX 10.6.3:
    Dual Xeon 2.99Ghz
    32GB ram
    4 7200 disks in 4TB raid 0
    Radeon HD 2600
    Matrox MAX h.264 compressor card
Any advice on this situation would be greatly appreciated.  Thank you for your time

    Hi Michael,
Sorry to hear you're having problems with Adobe Media Encoder.  I'd like to get some more information about the problem so I can better understand your workflow, and potentially try to recreate the problem.  For what it's worth, I often import files of different resolutions without any problem, so I want to find out what's different about how you're using AME.
Apologies for the long list of questions; the small details can be important.
-- After you import the first file, what else do you do in AME?  Change the preset?  Change the settings?  Change the output destination?
-- What are the properties of the files that are causing the problem?  You said it happens on "non-standard" files, but can you describe the specifications for one or more files that cause the problem?  Please include file type, length, frame rate, frame dimensions, field order (if applicable), alpha mode (if applicable), and audio type and rate.  If you know more the bitrate, both video and audio, that would be nice, too.
-- If any of the files are small enough, could you post a couple online that I could try on my machine?
-- How were these files generated?  What application created them?
-- Where are the files stored? A local drive, a network drive, a removeable drive (USB or Firewire), etc.?
-- Which Adobe application or suite do you have installed?  AME a limited set of options if you're using Flash or Web Premium compared to Master Collection, Production Premium, Premiere Pro, or After Effects.

  • InDesign CS5 hangs when opening files

I have recently begun experiencing a problem whereby I cannot open any existing InDesign documents. I can create new documents and work in them, but I cannot open any documents previously created in CS5.
InDesign CS5, MacBook Pro, Mountain Lion OS 10.8.2, Intel Corei7
The problem appeared shortly after the most recent Apple OS update so I suspect that may be causing this. InDesign just hangs with the beachball trying to open the file which it never does. It gets past linking files, then hangs. The problem has also occurred when I try to open files with InDesign CS6 on the same machine. I have tried to open a variety of different files and the problem still occurs so it doesn't seem to be file specific.
I encountered the problem a few days ago and somehow resolved it through a combination of trashing preferences, removing the SING folder and some font management. Today the problem returned and I can't seem to resolve it via any of those methods. All other Adobe CS5 and 6 apps work just fine.
I saw a post that recommended removing the SING plugin from InDesign's plug in folder so I tried that too. So far no luck.
I've attached the crash report and the Sample Process report from the Activity Monitor.

  • InDesign CS5 hangs when conecting to network volume

Not sure if this is an InDesign issue or Mavericks problem, so I’ve posted here and there.
This problem only happens with InDesign if I have our file server connected (a share point on another mac running 10.5.8). If it is unmounted all works as it should.
Setup: Mid 2010 Mac Mini 2.4 Core 2 Duo with 8gb ram
    I have:
    Trashed various InDesign pref files
Reinstalled mavericks via the recovery partition and it’s on 10.9.4 with everything updated
Uninstalled InDesign using their own uninstaller - checked the included all prefs option
Reinstalled InDesign and updated it to 7.0.4 (CS5)
I then Repaired Permissions and ran maintenance scripts too.
    Restarted
    ... still have the issue.
This is what happens if the network volume is mounted and I’m connect (as Guest):
    InDesign will load
I can create a new blank .indd and save it
I can open that blank .indd
I can open that blank .indd if it includes just text
I can open that blank .indd if it includes just text and images (not located on the network volume)
If I open that blank .indd and it includes images that a located on the network volume or any pre-existing .indd which have images from the network volume InDesign hangs once the open dialogue box closes, after a force quite an .idlk file is left behind in the finder.
If I place/insert an image, the Place dialogue box opens and I can access the desktop & the documents folder via the sidebar and place/insert images from there into the document. But InDesign will hang if I select the Users Home folder,  the Dropbox folder or any folder from the file server.
As I said this only happens in InDesign, Illustrator and Photoshop can open files from the network volume to their hearts content without issue.
    Console log:
When I open the open or save dialogue in InDesign I get the following looped in the console – it will only stop looping those lines once I quite InDesign.

Clearly InDesign does not like the network volume attached or there is some sort of permissions problem going on, I have no idea why this is happening, other machines running Mavericks and InDesign 7.0.4 have no issues.

Upgrading to osX Yosemite seems to have solved this issue

  • InDesign CS5 hangs when opening large file

I just completed a 128 page business directory with lots of ads (mostly PDFs) supplied by others (some good some crappy). Anyway, I worked on the document over the past month and all was well. Placed images were scattered in different folders. Anyway, upon completion, I packaged the final version. After packaging the file, I can no longer open it without ID hanging or crashing. After it crashes I launch ID again and autorecovery opens the file just fine. I then resaved the file and even exported as an idml file (first couple of times I tried that I crashed as well). Then I tried to open the idml file -- it runs through all the image names in the file but then when it should launch nothing happens and ID hangs so I must force quit. I work on the directory each year so I need a copy I can work with. I can open other ID files just fine without crashing. Does anyone have any suggestions? I could post a crash report if anyone wants to evaluate it. (BTW I did try and trash preferences but that didn't seem to help either.)
    Thanks

    Jeff, yes, those are correct.
The first indicates that InDesign is stuck in font manipulation code, and the second is somewhat more precise about where:

Unfortunately, this signature is not consistent with either SING problems or problems with third-party font management tools, both of which have easy fixes.
The best we can say is probably "sounds like a corrupt font or group of conflicting fonts."
So, start by removing all non-system fonts and seeing if ID will open your document.
    Assuming that works:
Then, divide the set of removed fonts in half and put half of the back -- see if it works.
If so, add another half set back, etc., etc. until you pinpoint the bad font.

  • CS5 Hangs When Minimizing or Switching to Another App

If I minimize Premiere or switch to another app (or even if I use the encoder queue, which opens another window and takes the focus off the Premiere app and puts it on the encoder app), Premiere hangs.  First it has the Windows 7 "working" circle, then if you click anywhere it turns the Premiere screen white and says Not Responding.  The other windows on my second monitor (like Project, Audio Mixer, etc.) stay normal looking until you click on them, then they become white as well.
There's a ton of disk activity when this happens.
Not sure, but it could be related to something else I'm seeing: Premiere tries to rebuild peak files and reloads all MXF (P2) media each time project loads, which takes forever.  It's almost like it starts to do it again in the background when the app loses focus.  I've tried all the remedies I could find in the forums to fix the rebuilding of peak files, no luck.
Note that I've made some smaller test projects, and they don't seem as affected - still slow when switching back, but don't completely hang.
This is on a large, 1-hour broadcast project with tons of source clips.  I'm trying to export 9 segments for the broadcast master, which has become excruciatingly painful to do...first I have to load the project, then wait 10 minutes for the 3,500 clips to load, then export the segment (which immediately hangs Premiere once the Encoder window takes over).  Am having to do that for each segment...you get the picture.
I saw another post from a guy saying he gets degraded playback performance when switching back to Premiere after going to another app...perhaps related? Perhaps not.  Dunno.

    Would love any suggestions...
    Thanks!

    Hi,
I'm seeing similar switching issues on large projects - happened in CS4 as well though.
This is with around 2000-3000 file references to load.
Mine takes about 20-30 seconds to switch (IIRC). Frustratingly it also happens no matter what is switched to - e.g. if a system popup appears, switching back to Premiere has the same delay. looks like Premiere is re-reading all of the footage files as my RAID5 array is hammered each time.
I was hoping that in the switch to CS5 and 64 bit, this would go away - but that's not so.
Wouldn't look so terminal if PPro at least put up a dialogue box rather than allowing Windows to grey out the window as if the app has crashed (which we know isn't the case). Windows is quick to show an app not responding though.
Anyone else also seeing this on larger projects with lots of files?
    Paul.

  • Encore CS5 hangs when opening project

I have read posts about this problem already and the solutions proposed so far seem to do with changing or erasing cache files, fiddling with Premiere Pro, etc.  Frankly, I don't understand any of that!!  Can someone suggest
something more direct?  What happens is that when I try to open old (about 2 months old) Encore projects, they  hang at between 7 and 13 %.  It is happening with 5 different projects that all worked fine in November.   They are on two different hard drives, and in separate folders.  Thanks for the help.

Some of the suggestions are general and may apply to  multple projects, and to causes that could affect multiple projects/drives. For example, the "run as administrator" method.
Can you create a new project? Can you save, exit Encore, and reopen it?

  • [CS5] Hang when opening a document

    Hello,
My plug-in copies InDesign documents (aka "templates") inside another one (aka "destination"), after doing some modifications in the "templates". It works on CS4 and CS5, but I have a hang in CS5 during the opening of one of the "templates". I use IDocumentCommands::Open() to open the document.
The problem exists only in CS5 (haven't tried CS5.5) and not in CS4
It appears the problem appears only if all my "templates" use different ICC Profiles than my workspace or "destination"'s profiles
If I don't copy my "templates" in my "destination" but just modify them and close them, the hang doesn't appear neither.
I tried to modify the ICC Profiles of the "templates" to be the same of the "destination" before modifications and copy (I don't save the "templates"), the problem appears but not at the same opening.
I puzzled... Have someone encountered a similar problem?

    Hi,
I am facing a similar problem on the InDesign Server CS5. I am trying to Open a Template as a Copy. Import the XML and Export the output format as PDF. After importing the XML there are commands executed as Fit Optiions for Text and image Frames.
I am able to execute the whole process properly for 3-4 times. After that InDesign Server just hangs on Open Document. I am using SDKLayoutHelper to open the template file. I even tried using JavaScript to open the document. But am still not able to resolve this hanging of InDesign Server.
I tried as explained in the thread but I have not used ITextColumnSizer in my code.
Can anyone please let me know where i should look for.
    Thanks in Advance.
    Regards
    Farzana.

  • Why does InDesign CS5 hang when packaging files?

When ever I go to "package" a file, it gets to about 95% complete and hangs. Although the file and all associated fonts and images does appear to have been packaged, I have to force-quit and re-start indesign. I'm on a Mac using OS X 10.6.8.

When it hangs, run Activity Monitor, select InDesign, and run Sample Process. You'll get a report. Upload it to http://pastebin.com/.
Then, chose View > Send Signal: Abort (SIGABRT). You'll get a crash report. Upload that to http://pastebin.com, too.
Post both URLs here, we'll tell you why it hung.

  • Bridge CS5 hangs when trying to move a file

I get the spinning beach ball when using the move file command in bridge. Any suggestions on how to resolve this? Both before and after Bridge Update from 4.0.0 to 4.0.4
    Mac Pro laptop 10.5.6
    thanks!

Is there some kind of Bridge patch or update?
Yes, if you recently reinstalled Photoshop and Bridge, you MUST update both, as well as the Camera Raw (ACR) plug-in.
