CS5 Illustrator - making anchor points visible

Hello
In older versions of Illustrator the anchor points show up when you are creating a path. They don't show up in this version. Any way to make them visible?
Thanks in advance.

Did you accidentially hit Cmd(Ctrl)-H which is the toggle for Hide/Show Edges?

  • Illustrator CS5 Rotate Tool Anchor Point Bug

    Summary:
I can reproduce this bug consistently, every single time.  I am unable to set a new anchor point for the rotate tool in Illustrator CS5.
    Steps to reproduce the bug:
    1.  Create a new shape, doesn't matter what
    2.  Press R or just select the rotate tool
    3.  Alt-Click to pick up the anchor point and drag to a new posiiton
    4.  Let the mouse go- at this point the anchor stays locked to the cursor even if I click and am only able to unlock it from the cursor if I click on a new tool, but without getting to choose a new anchor point.
Also I tried this with a Intuos 2 tablet and pen with the same results.  I have an NVidia Quadro FX 3500 card installed with the latest driver as well.
I'm not sure if this issue is related, but also in After Effects CS5 if I press 0 to start doing a preview and then click away say on Firefox, then click back to After Effects, I am unable to click around inside After Effects to get the render to stop.  It makes me wait until the whole comp is pushed into a ram preview before it unlocks itself.
    Any ideas?

I too experience this problem and was hoping to find a solution.  I've tried reverting to early Wacom Driver versions with no success. I find that if you "break the connection" between the pen and the tablet then the rotate point will drop and the rotate dialog will appear.  I've found that this only works reliably when lifting the pen straight up off of the tablet til it loses signal. Not ideal for precision work.  You'll notice that the rotate point drops when you move over to the menus, so I'm guessing it has something to do with the "drawing area."

  • Indesign CS5 Rotate Tool Anchor Point Bug

When rotating any object using either the rotate tool or 'Rotate 90 Clockwise/Anti Clockwise' the Anchor point defaults to the top left hand corner of the object frame. I would expect the Default Anchor point to be the center of any object that is placed on the work area.
Each time I want to rotate an object I have to move the ancor point to the centre of the object.
    Is this a known issue?
Using CS5 with most recent updates on Intel Mac but also noticed same error on Win based systems in our office.
    Thanks
    Nathaniel

Ahh, I forgot to check that! Yes it has worked, although it's a little strange to be defaulted to top left point on all of our machines!
    Thank you

  • AE CS5 - Shape Layer - Anchor point moves after position keyframe

I am experiencing unintuitive (to me) behaviour with a brand new shape layer. Here are the steps to reproduce the issue. I have made a screen cap of the problem but can't figure out how to upload it to this forum.
    1. In an existing composition, I create a new Shape Layer
    2. By default the anchor point (center point) is in the dead center of the shape layer. Perfect.
    3. I turn on Position keyframing, and add a position keyframe at my current time
    4. Instantly the anchor point now jumps to the center of the composition, and so now when I scale my shape layer it doesn't scale properly
If I try to use the Pan Behind tool, I get position keyframing. Besides, I SHOULD NOT HAVE TO DO THIS, since the anchor point was in the correct spot to start with, and it's only because of this keyframing "bug" that the anchor point jumps.
What am I missing or doing wrong? How can I add a position keyframe to a BRAND NEW LAYER that has no other animation on it, and still keep the anchor point in the dead center of my shape?
    Thanks for your advice,
    Tom

Thanks to Rick and Mylenium for your helpful answers. Rick, I'd prefer not to have to manually reposition, because I'm never going to be as mathematically precise as the software for positioning the Anchor Point dead center.
Using the transform controls on the shape rather than the global container certainly did the trick! You guys are great. Thanks.
    [rant]
In my defense as far as the constant exhortations to "RTFM", we all know that most veteran software users only go to the manual when there's a problem. You also know that Adobe's help system (particluarly in regards to search) has gotten worse over the years, not better. So when I run into a situation like this, I'm going to search through the help for what I believe the problem is: namely "anchor points", "transformations" and "keyframes", and maybe "shape layers". This is a fair amount of research, and it's exactly what I do as my first line of defense.
The second line of defense that most tech savvy folk do, is a Google search; for example: "anchor point moves after position keyframe" or "After Effects shapes layer anchor point moves keyframe" etc. And you spend your time sifting through forums trying to find the relevant answers. I feel that THAT is my true due diligence, rather than reading the F'n Adobe manual that is so very very sparse.
So after my due diligence, I turn to the experts communities, because there I know I will get educated, reliable help within a reasonable turnaround time. And because I myself contribute to these same forums in areas where I have higher than average expertise. The Adobe Forums have proven to be one of the great online resources.
Finally, now that I have a great answer from two knowledgeable experts (thanks again!), I've also enriched the community, because of the way I have crafted my post title, hopefully the next poor ******* who has a similar problem and a similar methodology to finding resolution will stubmle upon my post because I've tried to overload the title with relevant keywords that will generate hits in google.
Through my question, and your accurate answers, the global knowledgebase has improved.
So forgive me for not memorizing the F'n Adobe online help. I go to the resources that are the most useful, expedient, and provide the greatest value as a whole.

    Peace,
    Tom

  • CS5 illustrator making my files huge

I'm having a bit of an issue with illustrator cs5.  I have a project that I'm working on that has a header and 4 images in it.  The images are all 400-500 kb.  When I save though it makes the file 44.6 mb.  I can not figure out why this is happening.  I do need the file to be either a pdf or pdf compatible.
I tried some of the solutions I found on here such as doing a save as to either cs2 or cs3, then reopening, but that did not change the file size at all.  I remade the file from scratch just in case there was some layer I wasn't seeing or something like that and it came out at an even larger size for some reason.
I am a pretty novice user of illustrator so I'm sure it is something I am doing but I can not figure it out.  Any help is much appreciated.

Take a look at your palettes to see if you have many items that don't belong there (eg: swatches, graphic Styles, Brushes). Clear them out and resave your file.
The only reason you need to save as PDF compatible is if your illutrator file is being placed in another program that requires that, or if someone has a lesser version of illustrator, and they (usually Asian printers) need to open your illustrator file. Often they ask for PDF compatible cause they do not want to disclose they are working with an older version of Illustrator.

  • Need Help in Illustrator - Anchor Points to Dots

I'm doing some work in Illustrator related to 3D modeling and i can export from the 3D aplication vector data to illustrator.
My problem is i would like that the vertexs from the 3D model would show up like dots. And i dont know how to make in Illustrator.
I see 2 possibilities that i don't know how to acomplish:
    - There is a way to make illustrator render anchor points like dots.
    - There is a way to place and object (like a circle) in each anchor point automaticly.
    Thanks for any help.
    Cheers

    Here is my answer
Okay, I consider this potentially dangerous, because I don't know all the ramifications, never tried it before... but it initially appears to work. (I'm using CS3)
Draw your path point to point.
With the path selected, Select > Object> Direction handles
Delete (this should leave the points, no connecting lines)
With the points selected, Effect > Convert to Shape > Ellipse
Specify an appropriate radius. Set fill to black after the effect is applied. Save a Graphic Style to reuse.

  • SMALL Anchor Points

Oh My God, I loooooooove Illustrator, BUT:
    ANCHOR POINTS DRIVE ME CRAZY!!!
When I am drawing paths with pen tool, and need to adjust anchor points or handles, they are so small! I work at 1280 rez, and seems that those tiny points were designed to drive us mad!
In CS3 I noted a improvement on this, but even the largest size available for anchor points presentation is still small for me.
When we design interfaces, we have to follow the Fitt´s law (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fitts%27s_law). According to this, "targets that are smaller and/or further away require more time to acquire".
The productivity, related to dealing with points, would be strongly affected if those tiny anchor points could be made bigger or more responsible.
It hurts to say but, Corel Draw´s anchor points dynamic is much better. But that´s all. All other stuff is better in Illustrator. Why Adobe doesn´t make this software COMPLETELY better than CorelDraw? Better anchor points is still missing, specially concerning to their sizes in interface.
    Just my 2 cents.

Thanks Larry. I ended up talking to cusomer support, and they had me delete the "en_US" file in the Illustrator CS6 Preferences file. After that, it started working correctly. Glad to know my frustration with this tricky program was actually warranted this time around

  • Illustrator cc 2014 adds anchor points to guides

What is happening with illustrator CC 2014!!! I have placed a guide to know where to add a anchor point cliked on the add anchor point tool but when i select the object i want to add the anchor point to it adds an anchor point to the guide!!!! so i locked the guide thinking that this would solve the problem it then gives me a warning sign saying please use on a segment of the path it still thinks the guide is a path!!!

    wozza,
Are you sure you are selecting the path, not the guid?
It may be time to look at the list.
The following is a general list of things you may try when the issue is not in a specific file (you may have tried/done some of them already); 1) and 2) are the easy ones for temporary strangenesses, and 3) and 4) are specifically aimed at possibly corrupt preferences); 5) is a list in itself, and 6) is the last resort.
    1) Close down Illy and open again;
    2) Restart the computer (you may do that up to 3 times);
    3) Close down Illy and press Ctrl+Alt+Shift/Cmd+Option+Shift during startup (easy but irreversible);
    4) Move the folder (follow the link with that name) with Illy closed (more tedious but also more thorough and reversible);
    5) Look through and try out the relevant among the Other options (follow the link with that name, Item 7) is a list of usual suspects among other applications that may disturb and confuse Illy, Item 15) applies to CC, CS6, and maybe CS5);
    Even more seriously, you may:
    6) Uninstall, run the Cleaner Tool (if you have CS3/CS4/CS5/CS6/CC), and reinstall.

  • Anchor Points and handles disappearing in Illustrator CC – Windows 8

    Hi,
    I'm hoping someone can help.
This is becoming a consistently re-occurring issue for me, and it's not specific to any particular file.
The bounding box is visible, so I have a blue outline and blue "anchor points" at the end of each line, and I can even use the new CC round edges option, however I have no anchor points to do any resizing, and I can't hover the black arrow tool just outside the edges of a shape to quickly rotate it.
It's not a case of going into preferences/view and turning on bounding box and/or show anchor points (Ctrl+Shft+B) nor (Ctrl+H). This seems to happen to me randomly but consistently, on new or existing files, and there's no rhyme or reason to when it happens. I could have been working on the file for 2 hours or 2 minutes and it can just kick in.
Any help would be much appreciated.

Probably worth noting that I also have CC on my Mac and I tend not to see the issue, it happens occasionally but nowhere near to the same extent as the Windows version, and I've experienced the issue occasional on older versions of Illustrator also, so it just seems like an inherent issue on these versions rather than the inhibiting barrier it's proving to be on CC Windows.

  • Simplify adds overlapping anchor points CS5

I've been using Object > Path > Simplify to clean up artwork but have found that it can create two overlapping anchor points. This adds an extra kink to the path as each anchor point has two control handles. This seems to happen regardless of the Curve Precision or Angle Threshold settings.
    Anyone else getting this?
    (Illustrator CS5 15.0.2, Mac OS 10.6.2)
    Screenshots below:
    1. Simple circle drawn with the ellipse tool.
    2. Object > Path > Simplify... applied (Curve Precision 96%, Angle Threshold 0)
    3. The two overlapping anchor points pulled apart for illustration

Unite is very helpful (thanks Steve) and sometimes cleans up the path completely. There are still times when Simplify adds a whole bunch of points to what seems to be a clean curve. Unite then helps to clean up the mess, but there are often extra points which create kinks or loops in the path. They are easy to miss as you have to zoom right in to spot them.
Also, thanks Wade for the suggestion about cutting the path and rejoining. It’s interesting that CS4 splits the path at the problem point shown above when using Simplify so you are left with an open path. It's as if CS5 rejoins the path but doesn't get the control handles right.
Thanks for the script link, Jesseham. I must look into using scripts more to simplify routine tasks.
I've combined Simplify with Unite into an Action to speed things up. But I’m still using Simplify with caution as often it does just the opposite.

  • Illustrator free distort does not transform anchor points

When using Illustrator CS5 after applying the Free Distort effect, the anchor points remain in the original location. How can I get the anchor points to align to the transformed object?

It is an effect so it does not really change the object. That's why you can always go back and change or delete the effect.
If you want the effect permanently applied select Object > Expand Appearance.

  • CS5: Coloring Anchor Points

Hi there. I'm clearly missing some simple beginner thing. I'm working on a tutorial, and the directions I'm at are these:
    Step 16:
Select the bottom shape and use the Mesh Tool (U) to add an anchor point in the left corner, exactly in the middle of the bottom shape as shown.
Paint all the bottom anchor points of this shape with R:0, G:0, B:0. And paint the top anchors points with R:135, G:96, B:66.
Here's the Tutorial if you want the visual reference: http://vector.tutsplus.com/tutorials/illustration/how-to-make-a-magic-book-using-adobe-ill ustrator/
I'm creating a book, and this is at the base, so it was basically two rectangles with a half circle in the middle as a spine. I used the mesh tool to create a line that bisects the shape. I have to assume meshes behave differently, because I couldn't Divide the paths to make separate segments, and changing the fill of the shape ignores the mesh line. So I'm assuming right now a Mesh path isn't counted as a normal path. But it's telling me to paint all the anchor points, and in two different colors... How on earth do I do that?
I click the gradient tool, it doesn't seem to do anything but paste a gradient slider over things, that doesn't affect the fill color.
Grabbing the shape and changing it's color in the Color panel changes the entire shape's fill...
Selecting the group and trying to make it a gradient from the Gradient panel does nothing, it doesn't even register as a thing that can be filled.
So what exactly are those directions asking me to do?
    Thanks so much!

Looks like the instructions is missing key information for people that aren't very accustomed to using Illustrator.
To add a fill to a gradient mesh point you need to first select the Direct Selection Tool, which is the A key, and then click on each point of the gradient mesh you want to change. To make this process quicker, click and drag across the points you want to include while holding the shift key. This way you don't have to select each point precisely and can be a little looser with what you're selecting. But keep in mind that any points you surround with the direct selection tool will be selected so depending on the shapes in your file dragging across them may not be the best option.
Then with the points selected you can go into your Color pallet and change the color of just those points. You'll know the points are selected because they'll be filled in with a solid color while non-selected points will be "hollow" which is just a fancy way of saying they'll be filled with white.

  • Photoshop CS5 Curves & Anchor Points

In CS3, when using a Curves Adjustment layer, I could Shift Click on an image to place an anchor point on each of the red, green, and blue channels in RGB mode.  This process changed in CS4 and CS5.
From experimenting in CS4 and CS5, I can only place an anchor point on a single channel.  I want to place a simultaneous anchor point on each layer.
My question is, How do I place a simultaneous anchor point on each channel in a curves adjustment layer?

Using a curves layer, if I use Control Shift on an image, then anchor points are inserted on all channels.  This applies to CS3 to CS5.

  • Illustrator CC 17.1.0 Anchor Points Straying

Anyone else run into this issue?
    1. Create 10 rounded rectangles.
    2. Arrange them to create a maze effect in a 50px x 50px square
    3. Merge the shapes together.
    4. The problem is as I continue to touch the merged image the anchor points at the end of the prior seperate rectangles start moving by themselves, only slightly, but after a couple of touches (move around the page or rotate) it compounds and your have the ends of the rectangles looking like the are melting and not flowing with the rest of image. They either end up up skewed / flowing away from the rectangle or they bubble.
Other actions that might be worthwhile mentioning:
    1. prior to the creation of rectangles. I cut and paste an small image from PS and pasted it into the AI document.
    2. I saved the document into an SVG format and copied the SVG prior to saving.
Never had this happen before and making it a challenge to work with AI at the moment.
    Thanks
    Nolan

I have that set to align to pixel. Here is a simple example of what is happening.
I create the rectangle at the bottom of the image. Copy and paste rotate 45 and do it a third time and as you can see the shape is changing.
Adding a stroke, middle image end starts to warp and by the 3rd copy and paste the one side is flat. Im doing nothing other than copy and past and rotate.
