CS5 Interactive PDF - disappearing graphics and buttons

I have been struggling with CS5 - just about every interactive aspect of it anyway. I have an ebook that I just brought into CS5 from CS4. Each chapter in the book has interactive features such as buttons, anchored graphics, embedded video, html links, etc. I had been struggling with creating the interactive PDF (the whole spread thing) but fixed that with a script found in this forum (Thank You). Even still, I am struggling with random graphics and buttons that disappear off the page during pdf creation. One graphic was moved (not by design) into the bleed space of the document. All of these weird interactive bugs are just about more than enough. It is not an option to create the buttons in Acrobat... there are just too many. Anyone else have similar problems or have a solution I could try. I am close to the point of having to return to CS4 (which would suck to have to redo the edits made again).

I am sure that is true and makes very good sense for many projects.
This project is an ever evolving project... a price list that has evolved even from CS. I am in the process of creating it all new again, fresh in CS5 as a side project. Unfortunately, deadlines always push us to make do with what we can and with what we have. I was hopeful that CS5 would take away some of the pains I had been dealing with in CS4, but truly I was just uncovering more crud than I was able to work around. There will be a time when CS5 is good enough... just not today.

  • Pdf (with graphics and text) in the email body

When I place an pdf (with graphics and text) in the body of my email using Mac Mail my recipient sees them as attachments only. I am trying to find a way of presenting a formatted email with graphics that will appear the same way to all recipients, but a pdf frequently ends up being an attachment instead of staying in the body. The pdf  file doesn’t seem to always show up in the body as created. Is there a better way to accomplish this?

You have no control over how your email maybe rendered by other email servers and client side software.
Attachment Tamer may give you a few more options but it does not guaranty the end result.

  • Interactive PDFs: checkmark vs radio button

I am created an Interactive PDF fillable form for a client.
They want to use checkmarks for different options that user can choose - however they want the user to only be able to chose ONE of the options. Radio buttons work in this way (if one is selected, the others get deselected), but I cant seem to get checkboxes to work this way. The client is adamant that they do NOT want buttons, they want the appearance of the checkmarks.
My question is: Is there a way to make a checkbox function like a radio button?

Is there a way to make a checkbox function like a radio button?
Actually you want a radio button, but have it appear as a checkbox. You can do this in Acrobat by changing the property of the button, selecting a [check] for the button style. You can kinda of accomplish this in Indesign, by creating a radio button, and change the [click on] appearance to a check mark graphic or glyph. The problem with this method is that regardless of the various appearance states, the button by default remains as a true radio. When viewed in Acrobat/Reader, you can select the button and have a check mark appear and it functions as a radio button, but the initial appearance is an unchecked circle button style.

  • Using Graphics and Button elements in tables

We are running WinXP Prof, InDesignCS3 and Acrobat 8 Prof.
We created a table for our table of contents page. The last column in the table contains a button. Our first test was to use a TIF graphic. Our second test was to create a rectangle in INDD and apply affects to it to appear similar to the graphic. A text frame was placed on top as a title of the button. These two elements were grouped and placed in the last cell. When we PDFs the document the "button" style rectangle with affects dropped out and just the text was visible. The button TIF graphic worked fine. We also noticed that when we looked at the tag structure (for accessibility), the test that contained the graphic had the text as one large tag and the buttons separately. The test with the INDD "button" frame DROPPED out but all the text was included in one large tag.
In order for us to plan for accessibility, we need to approach this as simply as possible for the future.
How can we the "button" affects frame to work in INDD so that it doesn't drop out when the table is PDFed.

Jeff --- originally I did not have that selected. I created a new PDF with this selection and now the button is visible but the text on top of the button is gone. I am going to try creating a new button with the text within the same frame as the button effects.

  • Why does my InDesign CS6-created interactive pdf w/ email submit button no longer submit from Reader

Last spring I created a 6 page interactive pdf form to email my clients. At the end of the form, I designed Print and Submit buttons. I tested it in Reader and both buttons worked. However, now after revising some of the fields in the same form, the Submit button isn't working in Reader. A message pops up stating that only a data file will be sent, rather than the form. After clicking OK on that (although I do want entire form to be returned via Submit), an error pop-up states "This operation is not permitted."
What do I need to do to correct this problem so that clients can receive this form via email attachment, open in Reader and then return completed form via email submission? Do I need to open the pdf in Acrobat after converting from InDesign, and edit some feature there? Again, it is essential that my clients can open it in Reader. I have Googled this question but so far not found help.
    Thanks for your assistance!

    HI oliviat38527079
Seems that the hyperlink you created on the button to move to the next PDF is not working once it gets moved to a different computer via email, this happens when there is a change in the file path.  It works fine when its on our Mac Computer as the path is fixed because the PDF was created on the same computer, however the path gets changed once it is mailed to a different computer.
I would recommend you check the path of the hyperlinks & make sure they are fixed.
Suppose the path set in the hyperlink is C:\Users\NewFolder\PDF\file1.pdf , then the path of the file on the computer to which you have mailed it should be arrange in same manner so that the hyperlink works.
If its possible for you to share the PDF file then please do, so we can have a closer look & try to resolve your issue.
In case you any doubts please reply.

  • InDesign CS5 interactive PDF export not functioning

Hey guys, I have been starting to work with some interactive designs within InDesign CS5, mainly animations (menu fly out on mouse over, moving object on page load) . However each time I have exported my work as an interactive PDF, nothing functions, it all appears as static images. I have tried viewing in Acrobat XI, Adobe Reader, Safari.. all with the same result.
I have used the preview function to review that animation is working properly before exporting and every works flawless, it just doesn't export any of this. I have tried editing a new PDF preset and exporting that way. I have tried both "Interactive" and "Interactive for PDF" modes as well, in case that matters. I have had absolutely no luck and hope someone can find something I must have missed? Thanks for the help on this!

Animations are not supported natively in PDF files... Preview shows you just a Flash/SWF preview, not PDF preview.
Only way to use animations in PDF files is to create Flash/SWF file which includes animation(s), place that SWF to InDesign and export Interactive PDF after that.
And it´s just a work-around, not very good one IMO.... I don´t believe you can do animated menus with that technique....

  • Indesign CS5 Interactive PDF not really an Interactive PDF?

I have created an online Interactive SWF file using Indesign for a corporate Newsletter and it works fine.
However, when asked if I could produce a PDF version I thought "sure, just convert it to an Interactive PDF!"
I was shocked to find that it does not work and that basically I had to rip the whole thing apart and rebuild it to make it a PDF, as creating hyperlinks instead of button actions to me is not an Interative PDF, which is all it seems to infer.
All of the Object States had to be dismantled and placed on seperate pages.
None of the Buttons created to go to different pages worked anymore, I had to remove the button states from the objects and convert them using Hyperlinks and Hyperlink Destinations, a lot of work.
Surely, since Adobe own Indesign and also own Acrobat it would be possible to convert an Indesign Project to PDF and have the buttons work correctly?
Also, none of the animations work, these had to be scrapped.
Any plans for a future release to rectify this and the reduce workflow?

If you spent any time looking at these features you would have seen that they are clearly SWF only.
The workaround for this is to export the SWF and place it in a PDF.

  • Making an interactive pdf with animations and a video?

    Hi Everyone,
I'm working in InDesign CS6 and I've made a interactive pdf with swf animations, exported it to an interactive pdf and everything works great from the little animations to the page curl. Now, I would like to put a video in on one of the pages.
I've placed it as a .mov and a .mp4, exported as a .swf. It works great in the swf and the html file. It even works great when I export the video page as a interactive pdf by itself.
BUT, when I export all the pages in my doc (with the animations and the video) as a swf, then RE-import into ID, to export as a interactive pdf... the pdf only gives me a static window. ALL the other animations and page curls work though.
So there's a disconnect between the video and going from a swf to a interactive pdf.
Can anyone tell me what step I'm missing or if this just isn't possible yet?!
    Thanks so much!!!

Without seeing actual file, it´s hard to say what´s going on... but have you chekced that Flash Player in Acrobat finds your video? When you export SWF from InDesign, videos or any other placed rich media files are not embedded into the SWF. InDesign creates a resources folder next to SWF and stores those media assets into that folder. If you don´t have that folder same place with exported SWF, you will have problems.
If you place your video file into your layout and export as PDF, there shouldn´t be any problems. But if you place your video file into your layout, export as SWF, place that SWF back to InDesign and then export as PDF... then you will lose the connection between resulting PDF and resources InDesign created.
One way to solve that is to use public URL for placing videos. Thwn you won´t need actual video file stored locally. Downside is that Acrobat/Reader may throw an alert about that.
Another way is to open your Interactive PDF to Acrobat, select placed SWF and embedd resources folder into PDF manually.

  • CS5 Interactive pdf problems

When I export my book to an interactive pdf, the bookmarks generated by the TOC do not work, nor do the Index links or the cross-references. If I create a bookmark from the bookmark panel it seems to work. I heard there was a problem with this - has there been any update to correct it? I can export to a print pdf, and all the links work! However, the print version doesn't open to a page that fits the screen, and the appearance is generally not as screen-friendly as it could be. What good is an interactive pdf that isn't! Any ideas?
    Message was edited by: mountainma

I have found the answer to this problem myself!
Because the interactive setting does not support spot colours being kept it causes problems with any RGB Illustrator files that have been set up using a spot colour. You may well ask why you would want spot colours in an RGB Illustrator file. Well, it's to keep any Lab values intact, but to get around the PDF colour issue you can't have any spots used in this way.

  • CS5 Interactive PDF spreads option

I would really LOVE it, if the interactive pdf menu gave the option to turn on or off spreads. I often create books that are facing pages to be printed but then want to do a quick single-page pdf for on-screen viewing. The lack of this option is very frustrating. I know there is a work-around to turn off facing pages but this is an extra step that should not have to be taken. Please add the spread option back in!
    Thanks!

There are some differences in the file structure (which I don't recall off the top of my head because my workflow doesn't involve interactive PDF). Harbs has posted the list of differences in another thread that asked what the difference is, maybe a month or so ago.

  • If I save a word doc as a PDF, some graphics and text are missing - why?

I am working on a PC and when I save certain word files as PDFs I am having these issues:
    - Docs saving with no graphics from original word document
    - Text or text boxes in header area / near header not saving in PDF version
I've never experienced this before on any computer - anyone have thoughts? The documents have non-Western fonts which I can't open on my Mac, so I need to use the PC I am working on to save as PDFs. The fonts themselves seem to be saving fine, it's other components of the docs that are disappearing when saved as PDFs.
    Anyone have any suggestions? Thanks

I am saving a word document as a PDF - I guess Reader is just the program that opens the PDF... So this is a Microsoft question? I've never had a problem saving a word file as a PDF before...
As far as the font question, I'm not sure how to answer you... One example is that Unicode supports Devanagari Sangam MN on my MAC, but does not support certain other Nepali fonts (which I am able to download unto a PC, but which my MAC doesn't seem to support). The same is true of a Karen font called KNU which doesn't seem to work on a MAC. It seems that PCs support more Unicode fonts than MACs? I don't really understand how all of this works, but I know some of the fonts I have tried to download on my MAC aren't supported?
    Any thoughts? Thanks!

  • Hyperlinks are not working in Interactive PDF in InDesign CS5

Hi, I have a book that I previously in CS4 exported as interactive pdf, with Hyperlinks and buttons. Now in CS5 When I export it as Interactive PDF, the Hyperlinks don't function anymore (there are hyperlinks in the TOC to link to specific pages in the book) - if I export as Print PDf the hyperlinks funtion well, but the buttons no longer function (prev. Page, next page and so on)  Any suggestions?

    The process is as followed:
    Insert a 'Text box'
    Wrote Wesport in Text Box
Highlighted the word Wesport, right clicked and selected the hyperlink option
Selected the option to inset a website link
Pasted the whole link and pressed ok
The hyperlink then was shown in the document blue with an underline
Then selected the Adobe Printer through the Print option
The PDF was then created but hyperlinks did not work.
Hope thats is enough detail let me know if you need any more.

  • Interactive pdf features

I am looking to create an interactive pdf both links and buttons etc., not an interactive form. I am trying to look for a list of what is possible in an interactive pdf, but finding it rather confusing. For example, can you have a drop down menu with links in it,  which will take you to a particular section of the pdf? Can you have things coming in animated from the sides? Can you have buttons that you click with expand into boxes of text? This pdf will be a brochure available for download off a website. Thanks

can you have a drop down menu with links in it,  which will take you to a particular section of the pdf?
Yes, using a form field and a custom-made script.
Can you have things coming in animated from the sides?
Maybe with some kind of Flash component.
Can you have buttons that you click with expand into boxes of text?
More or less. You can create the text boxes in advance and then show/hide them based on the buttons, but you can't "re-flow" the page and make it shorter/longer based on the user's selections.

  • Problems with Long Interactive PDFs with Extensive Interactivity via Buttons and Hyperlinks

I have inherited a project which requires the creation of large interactive pdfs with lots of buttons and hyperlinks. I am having continuing problems with buttons not working and long periods of wasted time as attempted exports fail.
    Background:
The largest books range from 264 MB to 411 MB – (764 to 1024 pages).  Per book, the maximum number of buttons on each page is 16, linking separate files (subsections) in the book via text anchors.  The buttons are created using Master Pages which are set for each file (subsection) in the book.  50% to 60% of the pages in each file (subsection) will also be referenced as 2 hyperlinks.  One is the source page hyperlink on each workflow and the second is a listing on the source page as a possible navigation path. I have created hyperlink destinations for each page which is used to generate the source and navigation hyperlinks.  With 2 hyperlinks representing 50%-60% of the pages - that means the largest book contains a maximum of 1200 hyperlinks.  Each file (subsection) also has it’s own separate TOC and the bookmarks that are created  (optionally) during the TOC creation process.   As currenlty formatted, the book is primarily images of workflows which mean 50%-60% of the pages contain pdf images.
    Several questions:
    1.  How do I get my buttons to work consistently?  There is nothing worse than working hard and then ending up with faulty product.  I have been thinking about combining all the files into 1 document per book.  Then I could change the buttons to objects, add a hyperlink over each one and set them for a specific hyperlink destination.  Can I do that if the buttons are on Master Pages?  Can InDesign handle a document with 1024 pages?    I can't fix the problems in Acrobat later because it would mean 1024 fixes for just 1 button correction.
    2.  How do I stop InDesign from freezing when exporting these large pdfs?  It seems to wait until the final steps to crash which sometimes means a 4-6 hour waste of time per export.
    3.  Are we making a mistake using pdfs as our workflow images?  I'm not pleased with the quality of the images we have and wonder if we switched to another image format if this would improve the results.   Would it be worth the effort and relinking?  I have been reading different information on what the preferred source image format is for InDesign.  One article I found yesterday says using pdf images is a problem.  Another site said the Photoshop, TIF and JPG are preferred but PDFs were also acceptable.
    4.  Do I need to propose scrapping InDesign as the source of the project?  If so, what application can better meet my needs?

Those are the limitations you have to put up with.
Apple doesn't follow the PDF spec. It chooses which PDF features it will support.
As to the version number (v5 or v6 or the new multimedia features in v9), there is different support in different versions of Reader/Acrobat as the product has developed. You just need to post a message to downloaders that they need to view the file in Adobe Reader version X or above to get the best experience.
Other industry standards face the same problem: How can you add new feature like multimedia? You can't always be backwards compatible.

  • How do I create a button in an interactive PDF, which will forward the PDF via email?

    Hi,
So, I have an interactive pdf, with a share button. This button goes to the correct mail program and fills in the subject field.
But I can't find out how you can add the pdf as an attachment in that e-mail.
    Thanks
    Indy

    Hey vanhaelst,
You need to have Adobe Acrobat/Reader to attach PDF as an email attachment.
Select 'Send file as email attachment' icon from the toolbar (as shown below):
    Hope this helps.
