CS5 - Interpret alpha as premultiplied

I have some QT files with premultiplied/matted with color alpha:
mjp2 - Motion JPEG 2000 32bit
1920 x 1080
30.000 fps
61397 kbps
AE imports these files with premultiplied alpha as default, but PR interprets alpha as straight.
Documentation says:
"Premiere Pro and After Effects recognize both straight and premultiplied channels,
but only the first alpha channel they encounter in a file containing multiple alpha channels."
http://help.adobe.com/en_US/premierepro/cs/using/WS1c9bc5c2e465a58a91cf0b1038518aef7-7c6fa .html
It does appear that these files contain both premultiplied and straight alpha channels.
If I  import to AE then change the default alpha interpretation to "Straight - Unmatted",
I get the straight alpha key that PR is using by default.
Why would AE encounter premultiplied, and PR encounter straight?
Is there a way to force PR to interpret alpha as premultiplied without sending the comp to AE?
thanks

As you have determined, TGA is not one of the formats for which the importer provides this functionality.
AE imports .tif. and mjp2 files with premultiplied alpha as default, but PR interprets alpha as straight...
so you can add those two file formats to the unsupported list.
...so you must be using a third-party codec---and that codec isn't providing the functionality to Premiere Pro, either.
Did you have a chance to download and import the Motion JPEG 2000 32bit premultiplied alpha file I posted (be25.mov)?
I did not install any third party codec to import this media to PR or AE. I would be interested to know if you have to.
Is there a reason that you don't want to work with straight channels anyway?
For elements I create myself and want to be able to comp in the PR timeline, no.
It is simple for me to render using straight alpha instead of premultiplied... and I will remember to do that.
The mjp2 - Motion JPEG 2000 32bit QT files are precomposed elements with embedded premultiplied alpha
and I will use AE for any comps that use these elements.
Documentation says:
"Premiere Pro and After Effects recognize both straight and premultiplied channels,
but only the first alpha channel they encounter in a file containing multiple alpha channels."
Why would AE encounter premultiplied, and PR encounter straight?
Is there a different importer for each or is it a shared importer for both?
At this point, I will assume that PR does not support premultiplied alpha and plan accordingly.
I appreciate your time and effort tracking this issue.

  • How come AE cannot interpret Alpha Channel from ProRes4444 ?

    Hi there,
I exported a video clip using Final Cut Pro X with alpha channel using the ProRes4444 codec.
I have tested his alpha channel works & it works in FInal Cut Pro X when I import it back to Final Cut Pro X to test it.
However, when I bring this file to After Effects CS5, it cannot recognize the alpha channel because the transparent part are all in solid black.
How do I make AE interpret the ProRes4444 file as transparent with alpha channel ?
    Thanks

Q2. Nope... It's always worked. There were some gamma problems for a while, and a few other bugs here and there with ProRez, but if you're Mac is up to date you should have no problems with the alpha channel.
Thanks Rick for your help, I really appreciate it as I am not quite familiar with AE.
Q1. I did the steps you taught me & a new screen pop out. But under the "Main Options" tab, the section under Alpha, there are 4 choices (Ignore, Straight-Unmatted, Premutliplied-Matted with color, Invert Alpha). But all these was all greyed out. Any idea why ?
Q2. I am using Mac & I just checked my AE CS5 is Version 10.0. I am a student and i bought the Student Edition. Student Edition not allowed to update, right ?

  • Saving TGA with straight alpha (not premultiplied) and other weird stuff

Is there a way to save the alpha channel not premultiplied in a tga as I need straight alpha ... ?

I don't think we're the only one that needs to have straight alpha?
    cheers

RGB to Grayscale make sense but shouldn't create that much noise ...
When copying from the red channel to the alpha channel, in the same file,  I got those value as shown in the graphic and that's not gamma
But opening the image in any other software will be as the rgb value was. That means that editing value directly in the alpha when you need the exact value is impossible. That why we have to copy it from the red channel to the alpha channel to have the exact value

  • After EFfects CS5 - Interpretation Rules.txt

    Hello :-)
I have a question about the file "interpretation rules.txt"...
I would like to modify this file so that all the clips that use the "Canopus DV Codec" (CDVC), will be imported WITHOUT separated fields (Separate fields > OFF)!
In CS4 it worked perfectly, but in CS5 it does not work ...
Can someone tell me how I have to modify the file "interpretation Rules.txt"?
When I click on the clip with the ALT-key:
    ("AVIV") ("CDVC") (MC)
    best regrads
    Christian :-)

If it's not a 64bit CoDec, it will be handled via specific wrapper code in MediaCore (hence the MC) and that may prevent specific interpretations and settings to work, so there is probably not much you can do. I wouldn't completely rule out a bug, though....

  • Premiere Not Interpreting Alpha Transparency ProRes 4444

    Hello,
I've imported a graphic, ProRes 4444 with an alpha channel but Premiere 6.0.2 is not reading the transparency.  When I lay it on top of another clip the transparent part shows as black rather than being transparent and showing the layer underneath.  It seems like the same error is happening in After Effects.
Final Cut 7 reads the transparency fine.  I read that the same problem was happening on earlier versions of Premiere and After Effects.
I'm working with a Mac Pro, NVIDIA Quadro 4000, Lion.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks!
    Gerry

    Hi,
Thanks for responding and getting back to me guys
@ Fuzzy...Trust me... I didn't think it would work...it didn't make sense to me either but I misunderstood Gerry...he doesn't know that I am operating exclusively on a PC using only PC based software...I don't have a MAC.
@ Kevin...as you have garnered by now I can't use APPLE MOTION because I am on a PC.  I used Sorenson Squeeze to convert the file to an Animation File.   For hours I tried importing and manipulating it in Premiere AND in After Effects with No luck whatsoever.  I tried everything I could think of.
It is a virtual set and I was given 2 files:
Per instructions from a video tutorial on YouTube titled:  "Adobe Premiere Tutorial Set  Alpha Matte" I successfully excuted the instructions but the ALPHA STILL DIDN'T WORK:
File #1)  The alpha.mov file is on VIDEO LAYER 3: > I placed a Channel> Set Matte> set to "Use For Matte" > Luminance on the VIDEO LAYER 3 alpha.mov file > Take Matte From Layer> VIDEO LAYER 2
File #2)  The fullHD.mov file is on VIDEO LAYER 2
Should I send you the file to take look at Kevin?
    Thanks again

  • Encore CS5 interpreting footage incorrectly.

Hi! I'm trying to use QTs in Encore CS5, and they are 720x486, given that all the sistems we use are 720x486, Flame, Smoke, Media Composer, Aja Cards, Decklink Cards, they are all 486 in NTSC not 480, but DVDs are 480, so I'm trying to make a preset that crop out those 6 lines in Encore, but there is a problem, Encore is detecting all the QTs as low filed order, when they are actually progressive, and I can not find a way where to change that, so I can not create a preset that looks good, all looks like with a really low quality resampling when encoded, this used to work in the past.
    Victor Wolansky

I agree it's a bug - but a bug where?  In the program or module that created the source file, or in En?  Or both?  That's why I asked about FCP before.  Apparently there are some issues with Prog-Seg, and it would be unreasonable to expect En or any third-party app to fix Apple's problem.
Just curious: is using the AME a problem for you?  The file has to be transcoded eventually, so the time factor is irrelevant.  And with CS5 you now have a choice in En to use En or to use the AME as an out-of-process encoder.  So some users might choose the AME anyway.

  • CS5 AS2 alpha tween problem

I have a project based on simple graphics and some AS2 functionality. When I try to create a basic frame alpha tween I only see the 1st frame and the last frame. It doesn't tween in between. AS3 version works just fine. Is this some sort of bug???
    Thanks in advance.

    Thanks Kglad,
I have used Movie clips initially but didn't work. Try Opening a new flash AS2 file. Next create any shape and convert it to movie clip (first frame) and then try to create a tween between frame 1 and 10 (or between any numbers). Some reason it doesn't work. I also don't see the tween arrow in between the frames but when you right click it says remove tween so I assume there should be active tween between the frames.
i am just trying to see if this is something happening on my computer or a common error and how can I fix it.
    Thanks in advance.

  • Unexpected Alpha channel behavior in Premiere

Is there no way to interpret alphas as straight versus premultiplied in Premiere?  Why do my transparent layers and clips with alpha channels display differently with a Black Video layer below them?
    Background info:
I'm exporting my film to files with codecs that support alpha channels, not because I want an alpha in the result but because I need full RGB / 444 color coding for digital cinema theaters. I'm using ProRes444, Targa and PNG Image sequences to preserve as much quality as possible in my master exports.
I've discovered that there is no option to disable the alpha transparency in the Export Media step while preserving at least 10 bits per color channel (Trillions of colors in AE).
To solve this problem, I've had to add a "Black Video" clip to the first video track, underneath the film's content. When this is done, the pre-rendered text elements with alphas look different. They are movie trailer style text treatments that are light text over pure black. (I'm on my ipad right now and don't see a way to upload screen shots to show examples)
The result with the black video layer applied at the bottom is similar to the way QuickTime 7 displays straight alphas incorrectly. This problem occurs with both straight and premultiplied renders. The rendered text is from after effects and is stored using the animation codec.
I'm aware of how to work around this, by maintaining the alpha transparency in Premiere and then removing the alpha channel of my export by running it through After Effects, but that is a ridiculous, time consuming step.
I'm working with the GPU Mercury Engine on with a K5000 from NVIDIA.  Can anyone explain this behavior? Is there no way to interpret alphas as straight versus premultiplied in Premiere?  Why do my transparent layers display differently with a Black Video layer below them?
    Here are the screen shots
UNDESIRED EFFECT using Black Video layer at bottom: Notice the fuzzy glow surrounding the text. This is happening with both straight and premultiplied renders.
INTENDED LOOK when composited over nothing: The glowing edges are displayed the same way in Premiere as in After Effects.

In my understanding, the reason 444 is indicated is because they are not RGB codecs. They simply sample the same amount of color as is possible in true RGB codecs. They still require a conversion from RGB to YUV for coding to a file, which almost always introduces a very slight shift in values, though usually imperceptible or acceptable. If the codec is truly RGB there is no need to indicate luminance vs color sampling.
    ...I think.
Again thank you for your awesome input! You've been a huge help here on my day off. :)

  • The lowdown on black vs straight alpha

    Hey everyone,
I use motion and livetype a lot, so I'm very familiar with the strange and interesting visual effects you get when you forget to switch alpha from straight to black (why does FCP not do this for .motn and livetype files anyway??)
Anyway, I was just wondering if somebody could explain in simple, practical terms what the differences are in various FCP alpha formats and how they store and interpret transparency?
    Thanks!
    Clint

From page 372 of the FCP manual…
A_ Straight: Typically generated by a 3D animation or compositing program, straight
alpha channels contain only the pixels rendered for an image with no background
(although the background appears black). Because of this, movies with translucent
effects, such as volumetric lighting or lens flares, appear distorted unless they’re
composited with something in the background. Movies or images with a straight
alpha channel are easy to composite and always have very clean edges when
    composited in a multilayered sequence.
A_ Black: Most other alpha channels, especially channels that are hand drawn in
Photoshop, are premultiplied. This means that, unlike a movie with a straight alpha
channel that contains only the pixels of the foreground image, movies with alpha
channels premultiplied against black always look right, even if they have translucent
lighting effects. This is because the entire image is precomposited against black.
It’s important that graphics with premultiplied alpha channels be correctly identified.
If a graphics file with a premultiplied black alpha channel is incorrectly identified as
having a straight alpha channel, a black fringe appears around the edges of your
imported image. If this happens, you can simply change the way the alpha channel is
used in the clip’s Item Properties window.
A_ White: Works the same as the black alpha channel, except that the clip is
    precomposited against white.
A_ None/Ignore: If a clip has no alpha channel, or if you want to disable the alpha
channel of a clip so that it’s no longer used, you can use the None/Ignore setting.

  • Background Alpha export is arbitrary

It's been some time, so I'm starting over on the Apple boards. (Must have lost my profile)
I've read with interest the many posts regarding this topic before posting. Since I'm a Motion novice, this is the 1st place I look. Here's what's going on...
Using Motion to make those nice supers for my Avid (Mac 2.7) projects. Spent the last week exporting supers, all very nice. Yesterday, the lower thirds only exported with a black background. While I'm certain that there's a setting somewhere I fooled with, I can't get an alpha channel to save my sanity.
Previous to this seemingly arbitrary occurance there was no change in this hardware/software setup. It just stopped exporting w/alpha.
    I checked the likely suspects...
Project background color slider set to 0%.
Channel in Canvas set to 'alpha'.
Each file exported using Animation (Millions of Colors +)
I avoid the "current project settings" export checkbox to avoid just such a case, instead I'd rather control the whole export process upon export. FWIW, there is no black background in the Motion project in question
For some reason, I'm unable to export a QT w/alpha channel. Perhaps when I try again, it will. This is a bizarre experience. I've been using alpha channels for decades, usually in 3-d apps and AE. A software codec selection should be honored by the app. Very curious.
    Any thoughts?
    G5 Dual 2gig - 8 g RAM Mac OS X (10.4.9)

Thank you for your thoughtful replies, but all the settings suggestions that have been mentioned are already appropriately selected, namely:
Canvas view channel to 'transparent'. (verifies that there is no background color in the composition)
Background Color selection in Project Properties reduced to 0%.
Exporting as Quicktime Movie. Export Options set under Video/Audio... Quality=100%. In Advanced Settings, Compression type is selected 'Animation'. Compressor Depth set to 'Millions of Colors+'. Quality 'Best'.
Under 'Output' pane of Export dialog, Use Current project and canvas settings is not selected. Resolution is Full, Color is selected as 'Color + Alpha'. Premultiply Black is currently selected. (I've tried that both ways to no effect)
The review pane on the right of this dialog verifies my Motion export settings as correct to obtain a Quicktime file with included alpha channel for compositing.
Upon import into Avid, file shows appropriate import processes for both graphic fill and alpha matte. However, imported Motion clip does not exhibit key properties. I employed a workaround, exporting Motion files as Animation Millions of Colors only, and using luma key to make the clip key. I've used several Avid codecs as tests from DV50 to 1:1 uncompressed, with no change in the outcome.
As the beginning of this thread indicates, I already successfully created a number of perfectly fine files using the above carefully-described methodology, which follows the documented procedures to obtain the desired result.
I appreciate the responses thus far. I wish I were just missing a silly button or selection somewhere. I understand that this is usually the case. For now, I hold to the thread title as an accurate description of this situation.

  • Live Type Render Quality

If I create just the text and export .ipr file into FCP I noticed that the letters outline look pixilated, jagged against the still background. If I import that background into Live Type and export into FCP including the background it looks perfect. Very interesting discovery.
    Is this normal?

In addition to what Big Daddy Sheffield said, could your issue be related to the fact that LiveType (as well as Motion) produce premultiplied with black alpha channels? That is, upon importing the .ipr file, you're altering the Alpha type - either in the Browser or in the Item Properties dialog - to Black, right?
By default, FCP interprets alpha as Straight and, in the case of premultiplied by black alpha channels, this produces a black fringe around your elements (which can come across as pixelated outlines). If you're the type to use black outlines on your type, this might not matter, but I figure it's worth a mention.
Or is your issue indeed beyond that?

After my initial install of the CS6 beta, which went quickly and flawlessly (I have learned to turn off my virus protection during install due to previous problems with installs of older versions of PS) I went to preferences and chose my CS5 plug-ins directory.
After that was done I got a series of 3 error messages which, after closing them, did NOT prevent CS6 from opening eventually.

    Plug-in Compatibility
    In general:
3rd Party plug-ins that are compatible in Photoshop CS5 should be compatible in Photoshop CS6
Adobe provided plug-ins, and additional plug-ins, for CS5 are not compatible in Photoshop CS6  Photoshop CS5 Optional Plug-Ins (Mac/Win)
    TWAIN plug-in | Photoshop CS4, CS5
    OpenEXR Alpha plug-in | Photoshop CS5 Extended
    Do:
Check the plug-in manufacturer's website for the latest version of your plug-in
Use the manufacturer's plug-in installer to install their plug-ins
    Don't:
Do not point Photoshop CS6's "Additional Plug-ins" preference (Preferences>Plug-Ins...) at a previous version of Photoshop's 'Plug-Ins' folder.
Do not manually drag plug-ins from a previous version of Photoshop's plug-ins folder to Photoshop CS6's 'Plug-Ins' folder

Yes, but photoshop CS5 and indesign CS5 work perfectly together ... Tiff create with PS CS5 was good for use in ID CS5 with alpha channel and was working fines... so it's was not really a big bug because it was working
But now, it's a big problem , because i've a lot of client that are working with indesign CS5 and i'm working with CS6...So when i delivre my images, they can't use it in ID .... Do you know a solution to export tiff images from AE or PS CS6 (with alpha channel) that are compatible with ID CS5 ?

Your head cutout must beon a transparent background, flattened when saved out of PS and the imported image must have a properly-interpretted alpha.

  • Greenscreen issue - eporting as an image sequence?

    Hi folks!
I have this greenscreen shot whith VERY bad lighting. So in order to get decent keying, I decided to export my footage as an image sequence after using the primatte keyer for further correction in photoshop. (I have also tried the demo of DV matte blast). What happens is this:
When I import the the images into photoshop even those areas which were transparent in Motion are black in Photoshop which makes it almost impossible to do any retouching (the subject in questions wears black).
So what's my mistake and what settings do I have to chose when exporting from Motion?

    Thanx for your quick reply!
But actually it helped and created another problem:
I switched on the alpha layer in photoshop so I could see what was transparent in Motion, did some retouching and saved the image...
When I re-import the image sequence into Motion, then THERE is a lot of black where it was transparent originally... I tried messing with the interpret alpha function in Motion, but that didn't help either...
I still think I tick the wrong option somewhere either in Motion or in photoshop.
