CS5 is opening raw files as a smart object to files im currently working

I just bough new CS 5 and find this big error. When i open raw file in Camera Raw and i have opened some jpg in CS5, it always opened as a smart object to this small jpg i have opened before. The same is doing my CS 5 when i drag some file from desktop, it always ended as a smart object in file im currently working with. Normaly it has to open as a new file not as a smart object in this file im already working with.

How are you opening your RAW files? If you are dragging and dropping them onto Photoshop, on top of an already opened file's workspace -  all files will be placed as smart objects. If you drag the files to anywhere else in the interface, for instance the grey area on top of the workspace, they should open as usual. If you are opening them via Bridge or by double-clicking them in Explore, they should open as normal.

  • How to Install Plug-in for PS cs5 to open RAW (.NEF) file for Nikon D810 Camera

I need someone to walk me through how to install a Plug-in for PS cs5 to open RAW (.NEF) file for Nikon D810 Camera.
I haven't used photoshop in ages and I got a new camera. I have been on the phone with Adobe (no help) and spent a couple of hours online trying to figure this out. I'm confused, frustrated and about to throw my computer out the window.
Also, I placed this in the "Photoshop for Beginners" since Photoshop CS5 doesn't appear anymore. I know CS5 is outdated but I spent hundreds of dollars on this program and you would think adobe would still honor its product.
    Any guidance is much appreciated.
    AJ

Odds are cs5 is too old. If you do a search on my the main Adobe website there is a list of compatible cameras for the last known update to camera raw for cs5.
Each version of Photoshop only gets so many updates for camera raw then it is necessary to upgrade Photoshop to get the next update for camera raw.
So you currently have 4 choices.
    1 upgrade Photoshop
2 get Lightroom - latest version
3 get Photoshop elements -latest version
4 get dng converter - this will download the latest version an is the only option that is free.
The dng converter can be found by searching Adobe website.

  • Smart Object .psd file opens in ACR, why?

In LR3.0, I select a .psd file in my catalog and do "edit in photoshop as a smart object".  Inside of photoshop, I double click on the layer or click "edit contents" of the smart object layer, it takes me to the ACR dialog.  Well, I do not want this dialog.  I just want to edit it as I would any other document inside of photoshop.  Smart objects created inside of photoshop to NOT behave this way.  Only lightroom psd files that are opened in photoshop as a smart object exhibit this "strange" behavior.  How can I edit the contents of these smart objects inside of photoshop and omit ACR?

Your application versions aren't in sync, so this just won't work I'm afraid: CS4 is (roughly) four years behind LR4 and the version of ACR that comes with PS CS4 (5.x - should be on 5.7) won't be able to interpret the edits you've carried out in LR4, assuming you're using the latest process version with the new slider controls.
Very surprised you're not getting any error messages or warnings though. Maybe you switched them off in Lightroom?

  • Why does the Amount slider on the Detail Panel reset to 0 when saving the file as a Smart Object?

Whenever I open a Smart Object PSD file to adjust previous settings in RAW, I have noticed that the Amount slider in the Detail panel has reset to 0. Does this reduce the files sharpening? Is this a normal behavior? Can this be prevented?
    I use a Mac running 10.6.8 and Photoshop CS6, version 13.0.5 x 64.

This behavior happens only on Mac desktop computer, not on my Mac laptop running the same CS6.
After I've edited an ACR file (including sharpening in the Detail panel), I change the file into a PSD Smart Object to complete my edit by clicking on "Open Object". I immediately notice this PSD file is not sharp. If I click on the bottom right of the image icon to return to the RAW file, I find the Amount slider in the Detail Panel has changed from the sharpening amount I gave it, to 0.
If I do the exact same thing on my laptop (running a duplicate of the same Photoshop CS6), this behaviour does not happen. The image remains sharp as a PSD file, and if I check by returning to ACR, the Amount slider has maintained its setting.
    Anything more you need?

  • How do I stop automatic placement of files as a smart object in Photoshop CS4?

I have done numerous searches on the internet to find out how to stop Photoshop from placing files as a smart object. I followed the suggestion of going to Edit > Preferences > General to uncheck the "Place or Drag Raster Images as Smart Obejct" but that option does not appear in Photoshop CS4. Does anyone know how to deal with this issue in CS4?

This may sound strange, but to avoid the "Smart Object" designation, just stop "placing" the files. Either open them, or copy and paste them into Photoshop.
If you're just opening raster files in Photoshop, they come in as pixels - drag a newly opened raster file onto your target Photoshop file. If you're copy/pasting art from Illustrator, you can choose at the time whether it is a "Smart Object," or "Pixels." Sounds like you want pixels.

  • Archiving: toss original raw, keep it as smart object in PSD ok?

For archiving purposes, once a .NEF is embedded in a .psd file as a smart object,
I can toss the original .NEF, right?  Cuz the entire reference is contained within
the smart object as long as I keep the .psd, right?
    Thanks

Charles, I've got very bad news for you:  Adobe controls TIFF (has for a while) and of course the DNG format too, as it is their own creation to begin with, just as they control PSD and PSB.
From the TIFF File Format entry in Wikipedia:
TIFF (originally standing for Tagged Image File Format) is a file format for storing images, popular among graphic artists, the publishing industry, and both amateur and professional photographers in general. As of 2009, it is under the control of Adobe Systems. Originally created by the company Aldus for use with desktop publishing, the TIFF format is widely supported by image-manipulation applications, by publishing and page layout applications, by scanning, faxing, word processing, optical character recognition and other applications. Adobe Systems, which acquired Aldus, now holds the copyright to the TIFF specification.
Adobe has chosen to publish the specifications for PSD, to make it accessible to other developers.
If they wanted to, they might conceivably pull the plug on TIFF and DNG, the same way you fear they can on PSD.  No difference there.
TIFF and DNG are no more "open" formats any more than PSDs are, not more and not less, anyway.

  • How make Ps save its smart objects directly on the current folder project?

How make Ps save its smart objects directly on the current folder project?

Assuming you are on windows - Right click on the smart object layer in the layer panel and select export smart object. This will create a psb file than can then be opened later by photoshop using the normal File>Open.

  • How can I get my CS5 to open RAW files?

I can't get my  CS5 to open my RAW files...can someone help me with this?

From what manufacturer and model are these RAW files from? I believe CS5 has support for Camera Raw 6.x. Any newer cameras after that would have to be supported by upgrading to the newer versions of Camera Raw. Otherwise, you'd have to make do with Adobe's DNG Converter.
(We're now up to 8.4.1 in Photoshop CC.)

  • Updated to CR 8.7.1 and now default to open raw files is as Smart Objects. How do I change to open as Images?

Looked in Prefs, but cannot find a way to set the default open to be images and NOT smart objects.

There is a SO checkbox in the ACR workflow options available via the blue link at the bottom of the main ACR window.

  • RAW files linked as smart objects not affected by LR5

My understanding of linking (rather than embedding) a file in the latest Photoshop CC 2014 is that it would allow the linked file to be edited outside of Photoshop and still update when the parent file is opened in Photoshop.
However after placing, as a link, a raw file within Photoshop, (that had been edited in LR 5.7 and retains the last LR appearance), I find that if I reopen it in LR 5.7 and make further edits, it does not appear to affect the linked file in Photoshop. I am not even getting a ' ! ' to indicate something was changed outside of the program that I am in. Are raw files excluded from this feature? Are raw linked files still behaving as though they are 'embedded' and can only be further edited using Camera Raw?

What I'm saying is that Camera Raw cannot see or access a sidecar file inside a Lr catalog.
The Sidecar files are not in the LR catalog. You keep harping on LR doesn't use camera raw, which it does…
No it does not.  It utilizes its own internal conversion engine, which is NOT Adobe Camera Raw.  It behaves very similarly, but it is NOT Adobe Camera Raw.
Whatever you want to call that "module", it is NOT Adobe Camera Raw, and it's developed by the Lightroom Engineering Team, not by the Adobe Camera Raw Engineering Team.
The various Adobe engineering teams are totally independent of each other, they are not only in different buildings but in different cities and states of the American Union, even in different countries.
The fact that they have little if any communication among them is highlighted by requests occasionally made in these forums by top Adobe engineers to let the other teams know when there are problems in one application that impact our workflow in another one.

  • CS5 not opening Raw

I have just purchased a Nikon D600 and have CS5.1 and find that it will not open raw images. All suggestions to date have not helped. Is there a solution or anticipated download for these purchasers?

  • Linked Smart Object:  Allowed File Type and Editor

Please forgive my lack of knowledge.  I'm evaluating PS CC 2014, own PS 5.1 and am a hair shy of being a novice.  Presently I'm doing Photomerge Focus Stacking.  What I'm hoping is that DNG files can be Linked Smart Objects and that I can modify the merged photo by editing the DNG files in Adobe Camera Raw.  Is this possible?  The Adobe Help article has a rather cryptic "You can’t perform operations that alter pixel data", that leads me to believe no but, I don't understand that fully.
    Thanks.

Currently you can not use any of the merge options: pano, hdr, or focus stacking with a smart object. So you would not be able to do that with dng files and retain the ability to edit them in Camera Raw. It would be nice though!

  • Why does psd-file from Bridge start as smart object in Photoshop?

    Anybody has a solution?
Instead of opening the psd-file normally from bridge into photoshop the file converts to smart object.
I used to work with CS3 where double-clicking in Bridge on a psd-file would open it in Photoshop. Now, when I double click in Bridge (CS6) it opens a "quick time pro" file, which I definitely don't want. When I use the right mouse to "place in Photoshop" it does so, but then automatically converts the file into a smart object, which I don't want either. What need I do to open a psd-file in Bridge as normal psd-file in Photoshop (and to eliminate the silly "quick time pro standard" when double-clicking in Bridge?
    Thanks in advance for help.

I have already posted the question in Photoshop. No solution yet.

    Hi Curt Y
sorry, it was getting somewhat late last night (I live in Switzerland) and after having spent already quite some hours on this problems I wanted to dedicate the evening to more pleasant things.
when I go - in Photoshop - to > edit > preferences  I only get the following window. there's nowhere "file type associations" (only in Bridge preferences), and I can't navigate anywhere to > Program Files > Adobe > Adobe PS 64bit > Photoshop exe. Do you have an idea why this could be? Thanks in advance for your support.

    Hi C. Pfaffenbichler
yes, there is a "Photoshop Document" in the list, but it has not
association. when I click on the little arrow on that line it "searches"
and shows all the files in the "program X86" on the C-drive. but I don't
know what to associate it with, or said differently, I don't know what file
in "programX86" to associate it with.
