CS5 Layers disappearing

I have used Photoshop 7.0 for around 6 years and upgraded to CS5. I did the trial download for 30 days and when working with layers if I clicked on the layer to move it around, it would disappear *poof*. I'd have to hit Ctrl-T and I could usually locate it in the gray space way outside of my work area.
I never had this problem in 7.0, I could click anywhere and it would move the layer as if I had clicked directly in the center of the layer. But with CS5 it seems to not matter whether I click directly on the center of the layer or somewhere else, whenever it decides to have a moment my layer takes off into no man's land.
So I thought it was a bug in the download, uninstalled bought the full version CS5 on CD, reinstalled. Same problem..."sometimes" when I click the layer it will just pop off into the great abyss and I'll have to transform it to see the dashes so that I can find it. This bug gets worse the more layers or the larger the file size.
Anyone have this problem or is it just me ?

The problem is that something's going wrong on your system.  This is why there's been no fix.  It doesn't happen for everyone; I've never seen a drag operation leave a layer off in the weeds.
Do you have multiple pointing devices (e.g., a mouse and a tablet) from which Photoshop could be receiving conflicting signals?
Do you have a wireless mouse?  If so, have you tried changing/charging the batteries?
Do you have an optical mouse?  If so, is the optical port clean, and do you have a good base/pad it can lock onto to detect mouse motion easily?
Have you tried an alternate (e.g., corded) mouse?
Do you have a reliable way to reproduce the problem?
Though it would be indirect, I'd also suggest visiting the web site of the manufacturer of your video card and updating to their latest release that matches your hardware and operating system.
Good luck.

  • Layers disappear when inserting HTML

I hope there is a simple solution to this. I am trying to use
layers for a simple webpage and when I insert Fireworks HTML into a
layer, all of my layers disappear and become layout cells on my

  • Layers disappear

    Hi everybody,
I have an "interesting" problem with my Photoshop CC.
Sometime when I am using my photoshop to work on a webdesign project, my layers disappear. Not in my composition but in the layers window.
I can make them come back when I use the select tool with Ctrl + click, but only one by one. The only way to avoid this problem is to close my psd file and to reopen it, it is a little bit swelling...
Did you already seen this problem and do you know how to solve it?
My conf : Mac Book Pro no-retina 15" with BootCamp Windows 8, Photoshop CC.
    Thx a lot.
    Sylvain

That my be caused by the graphics card driver problems that windows 8 has.
Does it make any difference if you set the Advanced settings to Basic or uncheck Use Graphics Processor under Edit>Preferences>Preformance
    and then restart photoshop cc?
Updating the graphics card drivers also might fix the problem.
Have you updated photoshop cc to version 14.1.2?
    Reset the photoshop cc preferences?
Curious to know, since you have photoshop cc, why your not using the mac version of photoshop cc?

  • CS3 Layers disappear when importing map into InDesign

I have an Illustraor .ai file of a map with many layers and when I import it into my InDesign document
some of the layers disappear. When I open the map in Illustrator they are all turned on but in InDesign some seem as they are turned off or transparent. Very frustrating...any help is appreciated!

Thanks so much for your responses. Although I don't complete understand what the issue was becasue I am no Illustrator expert I did find a solution. I found that there were multiple layers within a layer and also many of those layers had paths/compound paths. So I pulled the layers within out and made new separate layers for them all and removed unnecessary compound paths. So now I have many layers instead of a couple layers with multiple layers within. Confusing I know...but it worked!
    Thanks again for your input.

  • All my saved layers disappeared. Shows only one locked black layer.with red sripes

All my saved layers disappeared. Shows only one locked black layer.with red sripes

Apple changed the save behaviour several times in the past few versions of MacOsX - there is a good article about this:
    http://www.macobserver.com/tmo/article/os-x-mountain-lion-how-apple-rescued-save-as
The trouble is, you should (I know, not much of a help to you at this point) always create backups AND work with versions. So save many versions (x1, x1a, x2, x2a, etc), because when you work within one master file you run the risk of these type of accidents and there is always a tiny change your file becomes corrupt for some external reason. You never know. Disk space is cheap, losing your work is often a real hassle, and can become very problematic when dealing with clients.
So, save many versions, and make backups of your work. And never NEVER open your original files in any other software - always use a duplicate. You never know what that software might do to your files.
Anyway, have you tried searching for the file name on your mac? Maybe, just maybe there is a duplicate lying around somewhere with the layers intact.

  • Layers Disappear In Muse

When I click the little triangles at the top of the box on the right, after many clicks the actual layers disappear in the layers box. When I restart Muse the layers reappear. I now leave the box at it's larger state and the layers stay there. It would be nice to collapse the box without the layers eventually disappearing after several clicks.

Same here, The layers are just gone. I have multiple layers, at least 5 or 6. Sometimes if I continue working they appear back after a while.
Tried collapsing, expanding, closing the panels entirely, doesn't seem to work.
I opened another page of my site and the Layers appeared again...
Can this thread be moved to the bugs forum or should I repost there? Thanks.

  • Layers disappear when saving in CS6

My layers disappear when I try to save in Photoshop CS6. They disappear when I get to the last step before saving(where you can select the quality and stuff). The effects stay, but they become kind of crappy. I've no idea how this happened either. I was just working on some pictures one by one, and then suddenly, it started happening. I did nothing differently.
Reinstalling didn't help either. What the hell is going on?

You're seeing normal behaviour/results. Most image file formats do not support layers and there can be subtle to huge differences in the display of a layered doc versus its flattened composite because Photoshop uses imprecise shortcuts to generate the composited display of a layered doc. The display discrepancies can be minimised by viewing at 100% zoom.
While working on a document, check adjustment layers, effects and layer blending with zoom at 100% so there are no nasty surprises lurking in the doc. (Of course, I realise that there's a very good chance that you may be viewing only a small region of an image when zoom is 100%.)
Regarding the JPEG save in particular: when you are at the stage of picking quality/compression, there is an option of previewing the result of the compression. JPEG doesn't support layers, hence the flattened composite at that stage. Your open doc will still be layered after you commit the save.

  • Bridge CS5.1 – Disappearing File Names (Now You Don't See It All)

Bridge CS5.1. Lion 10.7.2. 27" iMac native display at native resolution.
For some reason, in Lion (but not Snow Leopard) Bridge cuts-off the bottom line of long file names (see the screenshot). Irritating. Difficult if I'm trying to distinguish between ‘Long File Name (1)’ and ‘Long File Name (2)’ where the (1) and the (2) have partly disappeared off the bottom, hidden under the bottom scroll-bar.
It seems to be something to do with the window resizing as Bridge, whilst not adapting the size of the thumbnails to fit the window size, produces a scroll-bar instead (see bottom right hand corner of screenshot). This doesn't happen in Snow Leopard.
I've tried fiddling with all the parameters which could effect Bridge's window display, but to no avail.
You can add this to the the other display problem with Adobe Camera Raw (see previous postings). Nice if Adobe could fix this too.
Sorry, this screenshot is hopelessly and incomprehensibly small owing to Adobe’s image size upload restrictions – so you’ll have to trust me on the disappearing file names and the scroll-bar.

Well, gentleman (gentleman, I assume) your answers are of no real help to me unless you have Lion to test this on.  There is no relevant comparison to make since I have already established that this works correctly in Snow Leopard.
Yes, it is a man, I leave the qualification Gentle to you
I was more curious to the solutions you have done and when something does work on snow leopard and not in Lion will not automatically need to be qualified as a bug unless you tried different solutions.
Have you tried to delete the 'lastusedworkspace' file from the user library, resetting preferences and even deleted the plist file from the user library prefs?  And did you try the default film strip mode.  Or other default workspaces, is it only your own customized workspace that shows this behavior? What have you set as additional info lines in the Bridge prefs.
If it seems a bug you should report it as such at Adobe, this is still a user to user forum. But with Lion still in development and wide spread known as a bit buggy it might also be wise to throw the same bug report at Apple.

  • InDesign CC Layers disappear on certain pages?

    Hi,
As a relatively new user to InDesign, this may be a simple solution, however some of my colleagues were also unable to help me.
When working on a document recently, I had tried to copy objects from one page to another, however when I tried to place them on certain pages, the objects disappeared and were unable to be placed on the page.
The layers were all switched on and they were not on the master page, so I am unable to work out why they are disappearing?
    Has anyone else experienced this?
    Thanks,

I am experiencing this! Have you worked out a solution?
I lost the background layer on two pages and it still exists for everything else. Master page is applied to these and when I even try copy and paste and drag onto the background layer it disappears. I've tried turning visibility off and on for all layers to see if somehow I had accidentally created a white box that's just hiding everything (extremely unlikely) but to no avail.
Additionally, on these pages I had text disappear from within grouped items and the text boxes still exist but all the copy has gone. And some of the linked images have completely disappeared too. These are on a different layer.
It is the strangest thing and neither me or anyone at work have experienced anything like this. Appreciate if anyone can help.
    Cheers.

  • 3D layers disappear

Please could someone answer what may seem like a really simple question. I have a 3d 1 camera set up. The camera drift through layers of text so they zoom past it. My camera starts at about -3000 on the y range and using keyframing it moves through - the layers in the distance only emerge after the camera gets past -3500 - and if i manually adjust them they disappear if i bring them further forward. i am sure this is really simple - but i can't see what i am doing wrong?! thanks

The camera has a limited range of view - select it and go the camera tab. There, you can adjust how far it sees into space, how close until items disappear, and a fade amount for each.

  • Layers disappearing randomly

I'm having an entire Layer Group disappear at random.  It is still there in the Layers panel, but it's not being displayed on stage.  I had added a new subfolder to the group, and I believe this is the culprit.  Removing this subfolder stops this problem from happening.  Here are the steps that cause this issue:
My layer group ("A") is initially showing.
I start editing another layer (Text field, any font)
The "A" layer group now disappears.
I select the "A" layer group and Move Tool.
When I move "A", it shows back up.  I can then select "Undo" to have it go back to where it was (and stay visible).
If I try to edit another textfield again, the "A" group disappears once more.
If I remove a specific subfolder from group "A," it stops this problem from happening.  I did have some vector layers in that subfolder, but had moved them out.
Has anybody else had this happen?  I have never seen this issue before.  Wondering if it's a memory issue, since I'm using some large font files (fonts with lots of detail).  Could the file be corrupt?  I tried saving it as another file.
    I am using Photoshop CS4 Extended v. 11.0.2 on Windows 7 64-bit.
    Thanks.
    Brad

If they are in non-editable regions of the page they will not
    be shown in
    the layers panel.

  • Psd (from photoshop cs5) layers not showing correctly

When importing a psd into Fireworks (cs5 - 11.0.1.7), I'm seeing layers visible that were hidden on the photoshop view of the same psd.  Also, some of the gradients and brushes aren't be imported properly.  Would it make sense to save the psd down to something like cs4 compatible before saving it for import to fireworks?

Well, just found one solution...   Library > Previews > Discard 1:1 previews and then zooming in on each photo in the Library (Loupe) forced the update.  This needs to get fixed!!

  • Photoshop CS5: Layers... GONE!!!

I created a document with multiple layers... saved as a PSD.  no problem.
Saved a pair of copies, under different names, even.
Saved as a jpg, emailed said jpg to people.
Later, go back in PS CS5, open the original PSD.  There's one single background layer, as if I'd flattened the original.  Ditto for ALL of the copies.
This is a very serious problem... have to make changes to the text, and, basically, I'm looking at re-building the entire thing from the ground up... any suggestions, folks?
    Little help...

Your answer only makes sense if I had one single copy of the psd document.  I made three, and made all three before creating a jpg from the third version.
Here's the process.  Created document.  Saved as File1.psd, with about 22 layers.  Changed absolutely nothing.  Then saved as File2.psd with same layers.  Changed absolutely nothing again.  Then File3.psd with same layers.  On File3.psd, I removed two of the text layers, resaved the document with the same name, then saved as a jpg.
Couple hours later, opened up File3.psd, and it was flattened, just had the single background layer.  Opened File1.psd, same thing, the layers were gone, replaced by the single background layer.  Ditto for File2.psd.
No mistake was made.  I didn't flaten anything, at any time.  And I don't understand how making one copy into a jpg could possibly make the other two psd copies flatten at the same time.
I know I am repeating here, but I did NOT, at any time, flatten a single layer, in ANY of the three separate copies of the document.
Even if, somehow, I did, in fact, mistakenly flatten the layers in the third version, how could the other two individually saved versions of the document end up with the same flattening?
Please don't answer this by saying, yet again, that I made an error, because I really didnt.  I made three versions very specifically to have a back up in case of any errors.  They're not even saved in the same folder on my Mac.  One is on a network drive, the other two are in separate folders on the Mac's hard drive.

  • CS5 - tools disappear on artboard

I have CS5.  Recently I got a new MacAir computer and in order for me to use Illustrator, I had to make a small update with Java.  (I believe it said Java6?)  Since the update, I no longer can see any selected tools in Illustrator (e.g., text, rectangle, etc).  They disappear when dragged onto the artboard.  Here's a quick video of what happens.  As you'll see, if I drag my mouse off the artboard, it reappears.  PLEASE HELP!!!!!

Hi Gener7, thanks for your reply, I appreciate it.
I've tried resetting all tools, and I've tried changing the Preferences -> General -> Use Shift... setting, but neither of them appear to resolve the issue.  That's quite frustrating !  It's quite peculiar, because another symptom is that when I click on, say, the marquee tool, it expands, then if I click it again, it very quickly hides and re-displays the menu o  __O
I've just reset everything, restarted it, tried again; turned OpenGL back on (for whatever good that'll do other than render quality - thought it may have been a GPU hang-up) and restarted.  It's still doing it, haha.  Hm - has Adobe hidden any more cool potential solutions to this mystery?

  • Layers Disappearing in Panel

I'm having an issue with the layers panel. I have a document that has 2 layers. Usually in the layers panel I can see both layers, turn them on and off, lock them, etc. Now the panel only says "2 Layers" and nothing else. What can I do to fix this? I have the most recent version of Illustratior (18.1.0) and I just upgraded my Mac to OS X Mavericks, which is when this issue started occurring.

    Ryan,
Or you may try from the top of the list. Maybe it is enough to restart as in 1) or 2), maybe necessary to reset preferences more or less thoroughly as in 3) and 4), or even a reinstallation as in 6).
The following is a general list of things you may try when the issue is not in a specific file (you may have tried/done some of them already); 1) and 2) are the easy ones for temporary strangenesses, and 3) and 4) are specifically aimed at possibly corrupt preferences); 5) is a list in itself, and 6) is the last resort.
    1) Close down Illy and open again;
    2) Restart the computer (you may do that up to 3 times);
    3) Close down Illy and press Ctrl+Alt+Shift/Cmd+Option+Shift during startup (easy but irreversible);
    4) Move the folder (follow the link with that name) with Illy closed (more tedious but also more thorough and reversible);
    5) Look through and try out the relevant among the Other options (follow the link with that name, Item 7) is a list of usual suspects among other applications that may disturb and confuse Illy, Item 15) applies to CC, CS6, and maybe CS5);
    Even more seriously, you may:
    6) Uninstall, run the Cleaner Tool (if you have CS3/CS4/CS5/CS6/CC), and reinstall.
