Cs5 line width tool, draw inside

I'm having a major problem with the line tool in conjuction with draw inside.  Any time i draw anything inside an object that has had the width tool used on the stroke, it diables the width work i have done and makes the object all one thickness (usually very thick, or as thick as the widest point).  Am i REALLY to believe you cant use these two tools on the same object.  I have tried everything, and no matter what i do the effect is the same.  Any help would be appreciated.
Craig.

My steps are as follows:
1. create the object
2. apply the width tool to the object (using a variety of widths throughout the object
3. select the draw within mode
4. deselect the object
5. using either the brush or pencil tool, i create another object within the first one(im most cases, darker or lighter colour as this is a cartoon object being coloured)
The second i am done doing that second object within the first, all the width work on the original object is tossed out, and the stroke reverts to the thickest width that was used in the width tool.
This happens no matter what shape i make or for that matter where that shape is (if i draw outside the marked area, i get the same result..i did that just for experimentation purposes.)
The ONLY solution i have found is to make the object, then duplicate it, turning off the inside colour (just a solid colour) on the top object, and the stroke on the identical object below.  Then i can use the draw within feature without it messing up my width shaped stroke, but this is a horribly inelegant and pain in the *** way to do it.  Is there something wrong with my copy?  I have been unable to find anything about this, but i have a huge project im trying to complete, and don’t have time to screw around with my tools that are not working the way they are suppose to.
Any help in this situation would be great.
Craig.

  • Why can't I use the Width tool on lines I drew with the Paintbrush tool?

I have drawn a shape using the Paintbrush tool's new smooth fidelity with a 3 pt stroke.  But when I go to use the Varible Width tool it want allow me to modify the line.  what am I doing wrong?  Is this even possible?

    Thanks.  That seems unfortunate.

  • Jagged lines when using Stroke Width Tool

    Hello,
So I upgraded to CS6 and since then the stroke width tool does not seem to behave properly.
I sometimes, not all the times, get jagged lines when I try to adjust the stroke width.
    Any idea what's causing this?

Looks like its duplicating profile points, but that may be entirely a precision error with your mouse clicks....

  • My CS5 has no width tool!

I got my photoshop CS5 and I need to use the width tool (more specifically the warp tool). But my CS5 doesn't have it. Do I need to install it as an add-on or something?
Please someone help me, I really need to use it.

What silkrooster said - only AI has a width tool for strokes. PS only has the various warp shapes associated e.g. with text layers and of course the freeform warps like Liquify or Puppet.

  • "width tool" and paintbrush strokes???

    Hello Folks,
I drew a cured line with the brush tool in illustrator CS5, but when I select the new "width tool" to change the width, it doesn't work.
    What am I missing?
    Here are my steps:
    1. Select the paintbrush tool
    2. Draw something
    3. Select the "width tool"
    4. Try to change the width but it won't work.
Since I draw with the paintbrush tool, the "width tool" can be very handy if I can get it to work.
    Thanks!

    Outrage!
This was the first thing I tried when I installed the software. Took 30mins tracing some custom script. Then chose the Width Tool to edit and then BAM 20mins of looking it up to make sure there wasn't some workaround to make it happen.
guess I didn't have the forsight for this one
really should be an option. or it would really be one that we would appreciate rather. <3 adobe team

  • The width tool – and its ghost anchor points

    Hi everybody,
i looked up everywhere now, but it seems, the problem hasnt solved yet. A Bug? No way, not with that great tool, they would update it, right?
    Soo to my case:
I try to use the width tool, and in most of my cases it works perfectly.
But if im opening a document from my friend (we both have Illustrator CS6 at the newest update) it wont work perfectly. (By the way, on my friends computer the width tool never worked right)
Some Time ago, there was another thread about this, but it wasnt solved in the end. So I quote this, because it makes clear what im up to (just look the video, and you will understand):
» I've been trying out the new Illustrator CS6 and while using the Variable Width Tool I found it is not accurate, at least the anchors appear somewhere else from where I am clicking...
I've uploaded a pic. and a videoto clarify.
This is a line with no other 'width anchors', after pulling the handle, the anchor appears in another place from where I was editing the width... «
Do you know the problem? Do you know a solution?
Would be great, thanks in advance!

Hi Mike, thanks for your Reply!
Acctually I allready tried to turn that off. Nothing Changes.
I just tried again on my Mac, but still, the tool wont behave correctly.
The weird thing is, I cant figure out a system – why or when the problems occur. Sometimes I can do 5 width-tool-anchors without problems and the 6th is like the video above.
I add a CS6 File with two paths inside. Some of the width tool anchors behave correctly (I marked them red) some not … on the same path acctually. You have to zoom in maximum to see the effects more clearly.
Maybe you could give it a try and report me if you got the same issues? Or you got any other idea?
    Thanks a lot!

  • Width Tool BUG! Come on people, nobody is flipping about this???

    Hi there,
I'm making an infographic and as I was working with the width tool I've noticed some strange thing: I set a couple of anchor width points precisely, but for some reason there's a thinner part all the time:
From 30pt (wide green part) it supposed to to go back to 6pt (top left width tool point) and keep that width until another point, and it eventually does, but with a thinner part between. No matter how many points I add the little curve stays there.
The stroke line is set to one side only (inside the width tool options). Maybe that is what causing the problem?
It always happens if the line is decreasing in width as well:
At the red line the width is 30pt (and it should be all the way) but a "bump" is clearly visible before the width tool point. And if I hover the width tool it always shows bigger width than it supposed to be, sometimes even up to 4-5 points bigger.
    I'm using Illustrator CC 2014.0.0
Can anyone reproduce this phenomenon? It is not a super big bug, but aesthetically speaking it is a big no-no.
What the F is going on? Adobe?
    Thanks,
    Robin

    > it is supposed to to go back to 6pt and keep that width until another point...
That is a false assumption. It seems that Illustrator is trying to preserve the smoothness of the curve by making the line thinner in between two points of the same width, but I agree, they should rework the algorithm to make it work more intuitively.

  • Basic Draw Inside mode Questions

    In CS5:
1.) I am drawing in Draw Inside mode. I Draw a rectangle, select it, and enter the Draw Inside mode, and I drew a star over it and since it was not inside the rectangle it disappears. When I move the Selection Tool over the shape, the outline of the star appears and disappears. How do you select the star and delete it?
2.) I have a shape drawn inside of another shape. The shape drawn inside the other shape was done while in Draw Inside Mode. How do I now select the shape drawn inside the other shape? The Direct Selection tool works, is there a way to do it with the Selection Tool?
    Thanks.

The Layers Panel holds great clues
Both items can be selected via the Layers Panel. Or you can double-click with the Selection Tool to enter Isolation Mode.

  • Drawing Inside Keeps Painting Behind Other Brush Strokes

I am currently using the draw inside feature on an object of mine.  I find that when i come back to it, like if i save and close the program and then come back, whatever new stuff i paint vanishes behind rather than appearing on top.  The main solid colored object I always have to send behind before i could paint over it every single time.  But now that I have some details over top of that, they are cooperating the same way and need sent behind as well im assuming, with the main object being at the very back.  I'd hate to try and select everything because everything around it would need locked and this and that to select what i need and its just allot of hassle, especially if i have to do it every time i re open the program.  Shouldn't new brush strokes paint above everything rather than below?  Any help would be highly appreciated.

I submitted something similar to this about two version back. I know
when I'm trying to draw a long line, it would be nice to be able to use
some sort of guide. I think I was imagining a tool that you could hold
with a second hand while drawing with the wacom pen. I think they really
could corner the market if they came up with something like this.
Unfortunately, I think they hold back...after all, if they give it all
away, they have nothing to upgrade to...right?
On a similar note, I vaguely remember back when ver 2or 3 of Illustrator
came out and one could fit graphics(text?) in an envelope. At the time,
it was a plugin that was subsequently removed.
For the next 50;) versions I whined about this. Finally, I think it was
version 9 or 10 that brought this feature back to Illustrator.
So given that track record, I think we might get it in version 17. Let's
    cross our fingers. ;)

  • Line width on framemaker table

hi there... i've got an issue on generated the framemaker9 - pdf.
First, After generated to pdf, the table line width looks like not consistent. There are some thin and thick.. how must i do to get the table look nice with the all line is thin...
procedure that i use to build the table is ------> Custom ruling and shading - choose from table (apply ruling style)
Second - what is the difference between click or not at convert CMYK to RGB at settings in PDF Setup ? What exactly the function of convert CMYK to RGB ?

    Sha,
If you have two separate questions, please create two posts. (Converting CMYK to RGB is the default behaviour of all previous versions of FrameMaker on Windows. Switching off this conversion is supposed to pass through the CMYK data when saving as PDF. Whether you need this or whether it works completely as you need it, you have to test.)
Regarding line widths: Have you printed the page?
Assuming your line with is set to be 0.5pt. With 72pt/inch and 25.4mm/inch you get a theoretical line width of 0.1764mm.
Your screen has a resolution of maybe 96ppi (pixel per inch) so each pixel has a width of 0.2645mm. You can see that with pixels so wide, you can not successfully show 0.1764mm in 100% zoom size. The software (e.g. Adobe Reader) tries its best, but sometimes fails. The human eye is very good at detecting patterns and recognizes even slight changes inside a pattern very easily.
Your printer may have a resolution of 600dpi (dot per inch) so each dot is as tiny as 0.0423mm. This time the printer may use about 4 dots to create the 0.5pt line, with a 1200dpi printer it could be 8 dots.
So in the end what you see is just a technological limitation. If the so-called "Retina" display makes its way into mass market with >300ppi resolution those effects will fade away...

  • How to set line width using CoreGraphics ?

    Hi guys.
I trying draw line with 2 pixels width.
How to set line width on CoreGraphics ?
AFAIK, OpenGLES.framework has method like this :
    glLineWidth(2.0);
Is it possible for CoreGraphics ?
    Thanks in advance.

    See CGContextSetLineWidth in the CGContextReference.

  • Line Segment Tool Options won't allow negative angle

When you select an object and hit Return to bring up the Move dialog, Illustrator allows you to enter a negative rotation amount in the Angle field (e.g., -30°). This is great. However, when you select the Line Segment tool and click in the drawing area to bring up the Line Segment Tool Options dialog, the same Angle field will only accept positive numbers. Entering a negative value will cause the Angle to be zero. This is sloppy work and so easily fixed. Please change it so you can enter negative numbers in the Line Segment Tool Options dialog like you can in the Move dialog. Also, there should be a preview checkbox in the Line Segment Tool Options.

  • Width tool

Why is it when using  the width tool and after you expand the stroke, there's tons of anchor points? I understand that the anchors follow the path but it's got a ton of anchors which make it impossible to clean up. What's the ideal way to clean up all these anchors?  ( sorry not the smooth tool or the simplify tool, something more precise perhaps?)
My second question is how can you make strokes that have the same width using the width tool? I understand there is the width tool dialog box where you can input values but if the stroke is slightly more twisted than the first stroke and yet I want to keep it uniform how would I go about using the width tool?
    Thanks!

What's the ideal way to clean up all these anchors?
The ideal way is to actually draw the shapes you actually want, rather than rely upon automated features. Assuming at least an intermediate-level proficiency, you'll always end up with more elegant and efficient paths. And yes, it will take longer.
    1. simple stroke
    2. width points added ther's only 5 there
    3. stroke expanded, see the tons of anchor points there?
You are familiar with the ability to turn on/off the display of anchor points with the Show/Hide Edges command, aren't you? Just because the program doesn't display all the actual anchor points involved as you instead manipulate the displayed controls for all these instant-gratification effects (auto-tracing, envelopes, stroke width) doesn't mean they're not there. Like it or not, they're being automatically created as you do those other-interface manipulations.
    Why is it…?
Because an automated routine cannot read your mind. It doesn't know anything about how many anchorPoints are "ideal" for you to manipulate afterwards, as opposed to how accurately you want it to maintain the same shape it originally automatically generated.
Do a little research. Read up on how cubic Bezier curves work.  Four Cartesian coordinate pairs (a startPoint, two handles, an endPoint) form a "hull" in which a curve is plotted, live, on any given grid resolution. Each set of four coordinate pairs are one Bezier curve; one segment of your squiggly path.
Now imagine trying to reverse-engineer that. Start with the particular plotted results on a particular grid (your monitor). Then try to determine from that four coordinate pairs which would yield a curve that would result in that plot. But wait…that's not really what your new demand (for fewer segments) requires: You have to figure out where to break the overall path into fewer segments (fewer sets of just four coordinate pairs). You have to figure out the coordinate pairs for a hull that would plot a curve not for each existing plotted result, but now one set for two segments; or one and a half segments; or three segments….
Some portions of the reverse-engineering may be relatively easy. Others may actually be impossible.
In other words, if it were possible to plot any shape you want with just four coordinate pairs, you'd never need multiple-segment paths, would you?
So after you've studied the math, then make that phone call to the software engineer and explain what he's missing.

  • Problem with width tool in illustrator cc

    hello!
i used to use illustrator cs5 and had no problems with the width tool. now that i am using adobe CC, the width tool functions very oddly and the cursor points are bizarre. for example, i use to just hover over the exact width point and could easily access handlebars or move it. however, in CC, i have to hover a little further away in order to get the ~ symbol to show. PLEASE HELP. this is driving me bonkers and the rate at which i'm working is quite delayed. THANK YOU!!!

Without proper system info and other details nobody can tell you anything.
