CS5 Mac, Application Frame, and shelled custom UIs

Just discovered that in CS5/5.1, when Photoshop has "Application Frame" turned on and an image is opened not in tabbed mode (ie. is floating), when we launch our custom UI is shows up BEHIND the image. Our custom UI is actually run a separate process, so we basically block PS until we return. While blocked, any other application run from the Finder (unless it is dialog-based) will show up BEHIND the image in Photoshop.
Anyone know of a way to work around this? Can I let PS idle in an event loop of some kind? Funny how OS X doesn't have the concept of application-specific window priorities.

Anyone? This seems to happen if anything blocks Photoshop for whatever reason. Do we need to send some events to Photoshop to tell it to clean up its global window priority while we do our thing?

  • Can I download CS5 Mac (non-extended) and "reinstall" to fix problem?

I have my household goods in storage at commercial movers while new home is being renovated, and won't be accessible for 6-8 more weeks.  While trying to fix an Adobe Air install (or shall I say "won't install") issue, I think I must have cleaned house too thoroughly and deleted a file that was needed.
When I launch CS5, I get the message:
"One or more files in the Adobe Application Support folder, necessary for running Photoshop, are missing.  Please run the Photoshop installer and re-install Photoshop."
I haven't used it heavily, but CS5 works ok for what I have been doing.
With other software, I have been able to download the demo, use my registration, and been good to go.  The only option I can find at adobe.com is for Extended, and I don't want/need this.  Is there a way to access the "regular" CS5, so I can clear up this issue?
    Thanks!

Can I download the Mac version to my new  apple computer  and use the same serial number after removing phtoshop from my PC?
    Short answer: not for CS5.
Platform swaps are available but only for CS6

  • (CS5-MAC) Data Merge and Data Driven Graphics

Apologies in advance if this is slightly off topic, but I need some opinions and insight here.
I've been using InDesign since its creation and have recently been pushing the Data Merge feature of ID to its limits. My colecandoo blog highlights some of what I have achieved.
However, there are some things which the Data Merge cannot do, such as warping live text which can be done in Photoshop or Illustrator. But, I've recently learnt of the term "Data Driven Graphics" and that Photoshop and Illustrator handle both. Photoshop accepts txt/csv files and appears to be relatively workable, whereas Illustrator accepts XML which I can't get to work at all and it is frustrating me.
So here are my questions. I know the answer to some of these will most likely be "no" but if i don't ask, i'll never find out.
is there a way to integrate the Data Merge feature of InDesign with the data driven graphics feature of illustrator or photoshop WITHOUT scripting (e.g. something I may have missed)?
If scripting is the only option, is anyone out there actually doing what i'm trying to do, or know of any resources out there that i can look at?
is there a way to make the user unfriendly DDG feature in illustrator actually reference a txt/csv file rather than an XML file? Because I'm working on a Mac, making XML from excel is like putting marshmallows in a piggy bank (e.g. messy and ineffective).
what kind of images can InDesign's Data Merge reference? does it extend to other indesign files or incopy files?
I know there are third party products which can do the above (e.g. XMPie or DirectSmile), but i'm trying to get as much value as i can from the Creative Suite purely off-the-shelf.
    here's hoping
    colly

    >Because I'm working on a Mac, making XML from excel is like putting marshmallows in a piggy bank (e.g. messy and ineffective).
It should be easy, shouldn't it? I found that running the Excel file through Filemaker made valid XML files easily. Import worksheet, export records as XML.
Can't help you with the rest of it.

  • Fireworks CS4 & CS5 application frame bug in OSX Lion

I've had this problem before with Snow Leopard and CS4, never resolved it without the below, and it's bugging me to the point I don't want to pay for an upgrade to CS5 as it's still there in CS5, and I dreamed it might not be!
    I know the following facts:
It doesn't exhibit on a clean OSX install.
It doesn't exhibit on a new user account on the same machine.
It doesn't go wrong for ages, but when it does it's impossible to fix without a clean install of OSX
Deleting everything realted to Adobe/Fireworks (there must be something I miss - anoyone got  a list?) and re-installing CS4 or CS5 doesn't fix it.
It's related to screen resolution (2560x1600) as it doesn't exhibit if I change the resolution, but I'm not going to run in anthing less than native on my cinema screen as that's pointless.
    What happens?
Open or create a new document whilst using the application frame and the whole frame jumps full screen then up and left (out of bounds slightly) and sometimes the frame is over the image.
Sometimes it can be recovered by dragging the frame (if it didn't go outside full screen)  It makes using CS4 or CS5 a nightmare.
I'd like to know where it gets the notion to move the frame/go full screen, and how I can reset this weird and annoying behaviour.
Having to run Fireworks in a new account is a PITA.
    Help?

    WOW!
After a couple of hours fruitless application conflict searching I stumbled on a solution.
I tried the FW without the frame, and didn't like the way the bottom bar sat by the dock, so I turned on dock hiding, the bottom bar then snaps to the bottom of the screen.
Went back to application frame on and was amazed to find that everything was now working as expected.
I assumed it was to do with dock hiding, so unhid it, but FW still works fine.  Thought maybe it was to do with the number of icons in the dock (I have over 40) or the dock size, but can't replicate the problem in my other user account, so I can only assume the following:
During the course of an editing session with multiple windows open and maybe with the FW window pushed under the dock and maybe opening a new file from finder in FW - maybe this is when it gets confused. - that would be a typical work pattern for me.
So, no matter any more, I have a fix for next time - hide the dock, see if it resolves, if not hide the dock allow it to open in the non frame mode to full edges of the screen, see if that fixes it.
It explains why a pristine user doesn't have the problem - small dock, it explains why a fresh install is okay for a while - dock not full of applications *I Must Have*  maybe someone somewhere can replicate the bug and fix it.
    *happy face*

  • Double arrow resize cursor of application frame extends over menu bar

Using Photoshop cs5 in application frame mode, when the cursor reaches any edge of the application frame it automatically turns into a double-arrow which when clicked and dragged will resize the application frame. (that is normal behavior). However, when the application frame is at the top of the screen against the menu bar, and then the cursor passes over the top edge of the application frame and onto the menu bar, that double arrow resizing cursor doesn't change back to the normal arrow cursor. Just very annoying to always see that double arrow when I'm trying to click any menu item on the menu bar.
I wonder if it's a photoshop issue or a mac issue, or if anyone else has noticed the same thing,
    Working on a MacBook Pro 17" i7, 8gb ram in Photoshop CS5
Just tried doing the same thing in illustrator and it does not have that problem, everything works like it should - I move the cursor to the top and I don't even get that resize cursor at all (which is the way it should be since the top of the frame is against the menu bar there's no room to extend it upwards) so leads me to think it's a Photoshop issue.
    Any feedback is appreciated.

I can confirm that this happens on my machine as well.
Current work around is to click an empty spot on OS X menu bar to reset cursor to normal before selecting a menu item. I have seen this behaviour since initial release of PS CS5 (all updates installed and behaviour still exists).
Illustrator CS5 does not display this behaviour on my machine either, so it would appear to be confined to Photoshop (I am assuming the mouse-over parameters for resize may be to blame, or lack of recognition of menu bar proximity).
    Machine specs:
    Mac Pro (early 2008) - 2.8 Ghz. Quad-Core
    OS X (10.6.4) - fully updated
    8 GB RAM (1 GB / slot)
    nVidia 8800 GT video adapter
    ACD 23" display
Logitech LX8 mouse (no software installed for mouse, generic OS X driver)
Note - Wacom Intous3 drivers installed (haven't tested behaviour with tablet pen yet, but tablet only plugged in and used for specific painting, not during displayed behaviour).
Default install for PS CS5 and AI CS5.
Issue displayed with or without any third-party plug-ins installed.
    A fix would be good.

  • Unlocking hidden frames and strokes for iBooks Author

Perhaps you know that there are hidden frames and strokes available for Pages, Keynote, and Numbers. There is even an installer (http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/32390/frames-and-strokes-installer).
These same frames and strokes are available on iBooks Author.
Work on a backup copy for safety, of course.

  • Bug Report: Enabling Application Frame forces all open documents into tabs

    Steps to reproduce the problem:
Set Preferences -> Interface -> "Open Documents as Tabs" to OFF
Open a bunch of documents. Observe that they are separate floating windows, which is good
Choose Window -> "Application Frame" which will turn the default Application Frame off
Choose Window -> "Application Frame" which will re-enable the Application Frame and force all of your open docs into tabs, which is undesired!

Found another option which is helpful for those trying to rid themselves of tabs:
Preferences -> Interface -> Uncheck "Enable Floating Document Window Docking"
This will prevent you from accidentally dragging a document near the top of the Aplication Frame and having it sucked into a tab.
That said, I think it is still a problem to have all documents brought into tabs when turning on Window -> Application Frame when all of the available "don't use tabs" options are chosen.

  • Any way to set the Application frame to specific dimensions?

In order to make screencasts more easily, I'd like to make a small AppleScript or Javascript script that would resize the application frame to exactly 1280 X 720
I tried a few things in both AppleScript and Javascript but I can't find any reference in the docs on how to point to the Application frame and set its dimensions...
Any pointer in the right direction much appreciated!

Yes, we do use Apple Remote Desktop. However, we want the other computer to be black the entire time, whether we are accessing it or not. I just don't want the students to see the mouse flying all over the screen and getting distracted, so I just need the screen itself to be black all the time, while still being on.

  • How to contain all windows in Application Frame cs5 MAC

    Hello,
This is my last resort to hopefully find a solotion to my problem.
Ive recently switched from PC to MAC, and since the switch I have had some trouble with photoshop (apparently its not the same?)
Now please bear with mem I have trouble explaining this properly hehe
    Okay...
When I have two photos open in cs5 in tabs, If i drag one out of the tab and then click on the photo still tabbed the one that isnt tabbed disappears! Its floating in behind photoshop over my desktop. If I minimize photoshop, I can see the file floating there?
Is there any way to keep all files (windows) contained within the application frame itself, so they no longer "float" behind the photoshop application frame??
I hope this makes enough sense!
I never had trouble with windows floating outside of photoshop when I was using PC...

    Hi,
Do you have the application frame in photoshop cs5 turned on or off?
    Window>Appliction Frame
A check mark beside the word application frame means it's on.

  • Mac InDesign CS5: Application Frame Does Not Save

I have a new MacBook Pro with CS5. Since I am previously a PC user, I prefer to have the application frame open all the time. In Photoshop and Illustrator I was able to turn it on, size it, and the settings saved. With InDesign, however, I was able to turn it on but the size never saves--this is driving me crazy!! Any help anyone can give is very much appreciated.

It's supposed to save. Try trashing you preferences first.
Please confirm that you open CS5, set the App Frame on, Quit InDesign, re-open InDesign, and the App Frame is not on?

  • Photoshop CS5.1 on 15" Macbook Pro (File opening/Application Frame problem)

I have seemed to narrow the problem to my preferences file but cannot figure out why.
I installed a clean, fresh version on my Mac. (No previous versions were ever installed).
When I open Photoshop for the first time, everything runs fine: I can open files and edit as usual.
As soon as I close it and re-open many things happen:
    a) I can go to open a file, but with Window>Application Frame unchecked, I cannot see the open file.
    b) All other palletes go awry. I cannot change the open palletes and or edit anything.
    c) If I check Window>Application Frame, everything is back to normal. No problems here.
So, what is going on? Anyone else having this problem?

I get this same issue with PS CS5.1 a recently purchased 15" Macbook Pro
In PS5.1 use File/Open to open an image file but image doesn't appear (histogram and other properies dialogs show the right info, though),
switching to Application Frame mode makes the photo appear,
trying to switch back out of App Frame mode locks PS5 up (ie nothing displays & have to Quit and restart via the Dock icon).
For me this issue only happens when my secondary display in NOT connected. If the 2nd display is hooked up everything shows up normally. Doesn't seem to matter about the power profile (ie running on battery or not) and not affected by various background apps, devices hooked up (eg backup drive, USB mouse. All Mac & CS5.5 software updates have been applied to date.

  • Applications opening with a frame and no centre

I have just moved to a iMac from a PC, when I open some of my new Mac applications like Photoshop or Nikon Capture NX2 I get a framed border with the desktop wallpaper still showing.
The applications are already opened in full screen, it is just that there is a gap in the middle that is the desktop, the application is a frame around the edge of the screen. When you open up a picture it is there but with the desktop showing around it, if you click on the wrong bit the application minimises back to the desktop. Photomatix, NX2 and Photoshop CS5 does it, Lightroom 4, Aperture and Photoshop CS6 do not. I find this really annoying and want them all to open up as a full window with no background showing. Can I do this?

    Hello xraflad,
The following article has a few things that may help get these applications working as expected.

  • Application frame not working plus other issues Illustrator CC Mac

Running Illustrator CC on a Mac. I'm missing the maximize, minimize, and close buttons in the top left corner. I have an "Ai" symbol in the top left, which I thought was only on the PC version? All my tools disappear when I turn on application frame. I deleted the preferences file, no luck. When I hold down command shift option during startup of Illustrator it says "error loading plugins"....Please help!

I am having this same issue. Should I just uninstall and reinstall? Or do they need to give me special instructions?

  • I downloaded and installed Production Premuim CS5 on my computer and when I try to open it out of the applications folder it bounces at the bottom and then disappears.

I downloaded and installed Production Premuim CS5 on my computer and when I try to open it out of the applications folder it bounces at the bottom and then disappears. Does anyone know why this is? I've tried everything to open them but they will not open. Does anyone else have this problem?

I have a mac osx version 10.9.2. I used to have the student version of creative cloud cs6 earlier this year. I cancelled my subscription several months ago and bought cs5 two weeks ago. I never had any problems with the cloud. I went through the entire download process for CS5, and they all showed up in my applications folder and appeared to have downloaded but every time I try to open them they bounce around next to the application manager icon and then disappear.

  • Is there a keyboard shortcut to close the Application Frame in CS6 Mac? Mousing to menus or click on

Nothing works to close this window except mouse/clicking... I don't like it being in the background when I'm working in other apps.

I'm not a Mac user, so I don't have a way to check this myself, but what's the behavior when you do disable it via the setting, then open an image?  Does the image just open a window exactly the size of the displayed image?  I assume this is different than what you're looking to see.  Maybe a couple of screenshots would help others reading this thread (e.g., Adobe folks) to understand how you'd prefer it to work.
I think the intent is to make the default Photoshop behavior the same on a Mac as on a PC, and on a PC there's no way to eliminate the Application Frame at all.
