CS5 no longer loads: preferences file is invalid. [was: need tech help]

My copy of CS 5 no longer loads. get a message stating ".... could not initialize Photoshop because the preferences file is invalid 9 it was deleted ) " how do I fix this ????

If its just that the Preference files are corrupt you can have Photoshop Delete them and generate a new set. Start PS an immediately press and hold Ctrt+Alt+Shift reply yes to Photoshop Prompt about deleting your preferences.

  • Spotlight no longer shows preference files.

Just upgraded to Leopard and found that spotlight no longer shows preference files in search results for a specific file name. This is a distinct step backward from Tiger IMO. Can anyone tell me how to search for prefs files? Thanks.

you have to include system files in a search. they are excluded by default. enter command+f in finder to start finder search. click on "kind", scroll and click on "other". in the resulting popup select "system files" and change the setting to include them in the search. if you want to make this default see this macosx hint

  • Slow Loading On iWeb Pages - Really in Need of Help! (Thanks!!) :o)

    Hi Everyone!
I have been a lurker here, learning from reading other's posts. I am in serious need of help, as I have been struggling with this issue for over a week and I can't move forward to other things until I get it resolved...
Here's what's up: I am creating a single-page website as a landing page for a product I offer. (These are very common now in product marketing). The page is here: http://www.howtogetamazingrelationships.com.
The page that is there is about the 4th iteration of the page in the quest for a faster-loading page. Everytime I test it - no matter what I do - it ends up being about a 24 second load time. Here's a sample test for review: http://tools.pingdom.com/?url=howtogetamazingrelationships.com&treeview=0&column =objectID&order=1&type=0&save=true
Here are the things I have done to try to speed this baby up:
    1. Took my youtube video off auto-play.
    2. Optimized the site using Web Site Maestro. 27% decrease in size; no load time difference.
    3. Took out shapes and graphics.
    4. Rebuilt the site on a blank template - now it is actually a little worse!
    5. Took out the website.js file - totally messed things up.
    6. Eliminated the navigation.
Nothing is even showing the least bit of difference in speed...and it is driving me crazy.
Here's the thing - I have also contacted Web Site Maestro's support for help, and they said that the problem was the size of the site and the length of the page. But here's the thing - I checked the load speed of a page that is about double my page size and length, and it loads in like 4 seconds: http://tools.pingdom.com/?url=http://www.wealthbeyondreason.com/page2.php&treevi ew=0&column=objectID&order=1&type=0&save=true
Anyone have help/advice for me? I am so frustrated with this, as the iWeb is crazy-easy to build, but I can't have a simple one-page product page load that slow. No one is going to stay around for 24 seconds!
I just am at the end up my rope and don't know anything else to do. I really don't want to rebuild the site again and still not see results, so any help would be hugely appreciated.
Thanks so much in advance, and I hope you are all having a beautiful day -
    :o) Tara

    Okay, more info -
I checked my site on a different web analyzer, and it does seem to be loading quickly - 15.66 seconds for a 56 k, but only 3.6 for T1. So that is good -
One thing I noticed in the recommendations is that there are 6 scripts that are running, that can slow things down. I don't really know how to change that (I am pretty web-savvy, but far from a developer) Here's what they recommended on the page -
    Analysis and Recommendations from webanalyzer.com:
TOTAL_OBJECTS - Caution. You have 18 total objects on this page. From 12 to 20 objects per page, the latency due to object overhead makes up from 75% to 80% of the delay of the average web page. See Figure II-3: Relative distribution of latency components showing that object overhead dominates web page latency in Website Optimization Secrets for more details. Consider reducing, eliminating, and combining external objects (graphics, CSS, JavaScript, iFrames and XHTML) to reduce the total number of objects, and thus separate HTTP requests. Consider using CSS sprites to help consolidate decorative images.
TOTAL_IMAGES - Caution. You have a moderate amount of images on this page (10 ). Consider using fewer images on the site or try reusing the same image in multiple pages to take advantage of caching. Using CSS techniques such as colored backgrounds, borders, or spacing instead of graphic techniques can help reduce HTTP requests.
TOTAL_SCRIPT - Warning! The total number of external script files on this page is 6 , consider reducing this to a more reasonable number. Combine, refactor, and minify to optimize your JavaScript files. Ideally you should have one (or even embed scripts for high-traffic pages) on your pages. Consider suturing JavaScript files together at the server to minimize HTTP requests. Placing external JavaScript files at the bottom of your BODY, and CSS files in the HEAD enables progressive display in XHTML web pages.
HTML_SIZE - Caution. The total size of this HTML file is 60492 bytes, which is above 50K but below 100K. With 50K of images and multimedia this means that your page will load in about 20 seconds. Consider optimizing your HTML and eliminating unnecessary features. To give your users feedback, consider layering your page or using positioning to display useful content within the first two seconds.

  • InDesign CS5 crashes on loading new files?

So I thought I had my InDesign fixed when I removed all downloaded fonts from Suitcase Fusion 3...however now I'm getting crashes whenever I try and open a new file or multiple files.
Here is the pastebin report for this crash in particular:
    http://pastebin.com/NxfYsr1v
Thanks again, if you also have any tips on whereabouts in the crash it can let me know what's wrong etc that would be great!
    Cheers

I'm not sure why that KB article is so popular lately.
It is only helpful in a very narrow case, this case is not that case
RandomSez, this hang is in InDesign's Font Manager, and it is typically a sign of a corrupt font.
But I guess you know that because we discussed it in your thread from last week, InDesign keeps crashing on type tool/when multiple files are opened??
Someone else had a problem with Helvetica.dfont that caused this.
Do you have a Document Fonts folder next to the file that's being opened? Are there fonts in there?
Does it happen with a new user account?
Do you still have fonts in /Library/Fonts?

  • Can no longer open PDF files in Safari 7 using Mavericks - help??

I cannot open PDF files on my iMac - not sure why - I am using  Safari 7 & have downloaded Mavericks - it says I have to launch Acrobat 8 and agree to terms (or some such thing) Please help.  How do you make Reader 9 the default for opening pdf's?   Help?

Back up all data before making any changes. Please take each of the following steps until the problem is resolved.
    Step 1
If Adobe Reader or Acrobat is installed, and the problem is just that you can't print or save PDF's displayed in Safari, you may be able to do so by moving the cursor to the the bottom edge of the page, somewhere near the middle. A black toolbar should appear under the cursor. Click the printer or disk icon.
    Step 2
There should be a setting in its preferences of the Adobe application such as Display PDF in Browser. I don't use those applications myself, so I can't be more precise. Deselect that setting, if it's selected.
    Step 3
If you get a message such as ""Adobe Reader blocked for this website," then from the Safari menu bar, select
    Safari ▹ Preferences... ▹ Security
    and check the box marked
    Allow Plug-ins
    Then click
    Manage Website Settings...
and make any required changes to the security settings for the Adobe PDF plugin.
    Step 4
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it, the copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C:
    /Library/Internet Plug-ins
    In the Finder, select
    Go ▹ Go to Folder
from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-G. Paste into the text box that opens by pressing command-V, then press return.
From the folder that opens, move to the Trash any items that have "Adobe" or “PDF” in the name. You may be prompted for your login password. Then quit and relaunch Safari.
    Step 5
The "Silverlight" web plugin distributed by Microsoft can interfere with PDF display in Safari, so you may need to remove it, if it's present. The same goes for a plugin called "iGetter," and perhaps others—I don't have a complete list. Don't remove Silverlight if you use the "Netflix" video-streaming service.
    Step 6
Do as in Step 4 with this line:
    ~/Library/Internet Plug-ins
If you don’t like the results of this procedure, restore the items from the backup you made before you started. Relaunch Safari.

  • Can no longer access the files on my Zen Xtra. Help, plea

I've been using my 60gb zen xtra for over a year now without problems (except for having to replace it twice due to the faulty headphone jacks), but after recently losing one of my hard-dri'ves, I decided to install Creative Mediasource so that I could easily copy all the music on my player to a new hard-dri've. Up until now I'd never used Mediasource - just the regular nomad explorer browser. After I installed Mediasource and rebooted, I can no longer get to the files on the Zen. I know they're still there - I can still play them on the player itself, and I can even access the player - when I click on the Nomad Explorer icon in "my computer" I get into the explorer and the player reacts by going into transfer mode, only when I go into "music library" everything is blank, and when I go into the data library it says 'not connected', even though it's able to show me that I only have 45 gb free, which is accurate. I'm not saying that Mediasource caused this, because I don't know, but I'm desperate to get my music back - having both the hard-dri've fail me and then the player itself would be a catastrophe for me. Any general help, whether with mediasource problems or just general problems accessing the music library would be incredibly appreciated. Thanks!

Geez, what an embarassment. Found all my files right were they were supposed to be. Uh, all's well that ends well? Again, sorry for cluttering up the board.

  • Loading font file in JWS. Urgent: please help!

    Hi everybody,
I have my own font file which I use in the GUI. First I create the font:
         myFont = Font.createFont(Font.TRUETYPE_FONT,           new FileInputStream("myfont.ttf"));
and then I use it specifying the size:
         textbox.setFont(myFont.deriveFont(18f));
This works when I run it from command line, but the above line gives me a nullPointerException from java web start.
I tried to use ClassLoader just like i do it to load images:
         ClassLoader cl = this.getClass().getClassLoader();
    and do cl.getResource("myfont.ttf").
But the problem is getResource() returns URL, but FileInputStream does not allow it in the constructor.
    So I tried:
cl.getResource("myfont.ttf").getPath() and feed that into constructor of FileInputStream but still no luck.
Does anyone have an idea abt what I should do?
    Thanks so much,
    yulduz

    try using:
    ClassLoader cl = this.getClass().getClassLoader();
    myFont = Font.createFont(Font.TRUETYPE_FONT, cl.getResourceAsStream("myFont.ttf:);

  • HT4236 How do I delete my saved albums on my iphone (synced from computer).  I have no option to just delete them like for camera roll.  I no longer have the files on my computer.  Any help would be appreciated.

I have lots of photo albums on my iPhone.  They came from my computer.  I'm never given the option to delete these albums - I can tweek them or send them, but no delete - not even the individual photos.  I no longer want these - and I no longer have these on my computer.  I understand that I can't transfer back to my PC, but I would think that I could at least delete them off my iPhone.

Did you try unchecking Sync Photos on the Photos tab of your sync settings and syncing?  If this doesn't remove them, try creating an empty folder on your PC, then selecting to sync this folder on the Photos tab and syncing your phone.  This should delete the existing photos prior to syncing the empty folder.
Also, you can transfer these photos to your computer if you need to by using an app like PhotoSync.

    NO_MAPPINGPROGRAM_FOUND
    1) Open Interface Determination in ID and check if correct source and target interfaces are entered there.
    2) Also check the name of the Interface/ Operation Mapping whic is included in the Interface Determination
    3) Make some dummy change to this Interface Determination and again activate
    4) Check the ache Status in ID --> Environment --> cache Status Overview
    5) In SXI_CACHE check if the Interface mapping and Interface Determination are present
    6) If needed perform a cache refresh
    Regards,

  • Photoshop CS5.1 preference file deleted problem

    Hello
I hope soemone can help out here, i'm quite stuck!
I'm running OS 10.8.5 using PS CS5.1. My mac was left on overnight (not sure how relevant that is) and when opening up PS this morning it crashed with the message 'end of file encountered' 'preferences file is invalid/has been deleted'
I've read up on a few older posts about the same thing. I uninstalled/reinstalled from disk but the same thing happens.
    Any ideas?
    Cheers
    Matt

Please hold down Shift+Option+Command keys as Photoshop is launched.
Incase this does not work, please delete the corrupt preference file:
    Go to your home folder.
Go to your User Library folder.( OR Hit Command+Shift+G from the Mac desktop (or Finder > Go > Go to Folder) and type in ~/Library)
    Go to the Preferences folder.
Delete the “Adobe Photoshop CS5 Settings” (or similar name) folder.(Folder name may differ depending on what version you have)

  • CS5 & CS6 (Photoshop and Bridge) file association fix ?

My Win7 SP1 system is now runnging smoothly with Bridge CS5 properly invoking Photoshop PS5 and Bridge CS6 invoking Photoshop PS6.  Simply changing the File type associations in Bridge CS5 did not seem to work.  This was "solved" at 3AM last night while sipping a glass of Scotch - therefore it would be interesting if others would confirm my sleepy discovery:
    1. CS6 assigns all standard graphics files to be associated with CS6 and thus causes Bridge CS5 to invoke Photoshop PS6.  The objective is to have Bridge CS5 invoke PS5 at least for chosen file types.  Ensure neither CS5 nor CS6 is invoked.
    2. In the Win7 Start Menu search box, type "file association".
    3. Select the "Change the file type associated with a file extension".  This starts a window titled "Associate a file type or protocol with a specific program".
    4. All of the graphic files are assocated with CS6.   For those files you want to associate with Photoshop PS 5, click on the choses file extension (e.g. .cr2, .nef, .psd, etc) and click on the "Change Program" to associate the extension to Adobe Photoshop CS5.  (note.  this step seems to be a necessary operation since, when I simply modified the Bridge 5 file type associations, Bridge 5 did not honour the change).
    5. Start Bridge CS5. Choose "Edit -> Preferences -> File Type Associations".
    6. For each file type you wish opened in CS5, change the association from CS6: choose the "Browse" option and locate the CS5 version of Photoshop.exe".  This is probably in Program Files/Adobe/Adobe Photoshop CS5 (64 Bit)/Photoshop.exe.  I happen to choose .cr2, nef, and .psd.  Click on OK to complete the association.
At this point, you can invoke Bridge 5 and it will properly invoke PS 5.  If you invoke Bridge 6, it will invoke PS6.  If you use file manager to invoke one of your selected file extension types, it will start Bridge PS 5. Other graphic files will start PS 6.
If you wish, you can go back and reassociate the chosen types to CS 6 - but your Bridge 5 will still invoke PS5 for your chosen extensions since the Bridge-assigned file associations takes priority over the windows default programme.

Great summary!  I will amend the association FAQ
