CS5 Pen Tool Issues

I use the pen tool more then almost any other tool as all images need to have a clipping path. But sometimes I get the issues where the pen tool gets stuck in "Add to Path Area (+)" instead of the normal "Exclude overlapping path area". It will get stuck randomly and will not let me change it in the tool. If I go to the path selection tool it lets me change it there but the pen tool still remains stuck. It is kind of annoying to have half the path be what I want and the other half be added so when I remove the background all the holes in the center that I have are still filled. If I change to the ellipse tool it will go back to exclude(where it defaults on that tool) and work for a while then go back again on another image. Thing is that it always goes to the "Add to path area(+)" It is really beginning to get to me fast. Anyone else having this issue or know how to fix it? I am using it on Snow Lepoard 10.6.8 with the last version of photoshop(though it has been doing this since I got this mac 2 years ago). Intel Core 2 Duo 3.06ghz, 16gb ram and NVIDIA GeForce 9400 256mb GPU. Nothing too special but it does not happen on my PC, only mac and it is really irritating.

I tried it in CS4, and it does both of it there too, ugh. Thats weird, I'm surprised. Especially because both tools work properly when sample all layers is on, even with geometric shapes.
Something Adobe overlooked maybe? I dunno, thanks charles.

  • Adobe Premiere Pro CS5 - Pen Tool Issue

    When trying to use the pen tool to mark key frames for the opacity levels on certain clips, it will not allow me to mark them.
    For example, I imported one single clip, chopped it up on the timeline, and certain sections will not allow me to use the pen tool, but a few do.
    Any thoughts on how to fix this? I'm using CS5.

    Personally, I find this easier done in the Effects Control panel.

  • Photoshop CS5 Pen tool Selection problem?

    I've been using photoshop for a while, and have never encountered this problem. I've had CS5 for about a year now and this is the first time it has done this, so hopefully someone can help me!
    When I open photoshop, everything works. I make a new layer, go to use the pen tool,  make my shape and then complete it, and the line solidifies showing its a complete shape. I right click, and select the option: Make Selection.
    Instead of turning the inside of the shape into the selected part, it selects everything outside of it!
    I can't for the life of me figure out how this started happening, as it didn't do it a few days ago. I must have hit a button or something, but its still very annoying. Hopefully someone can help! Restarting both the program and the computer, does not help.

    There's a button for that up in the options area, when a Path Tool is active.    It's been a while...  Ah, here:
    I'm betting you have the one next to it pressed.
    Look at your path icons in the PATHS panel.  If they're white inside, you're creating an enclosed path.  If they're gray inside with a white surround, you're removing a path from the surroundings.

  • Indesign CS5 -- Pen tool disappeared

    The pen tool is missing out of my toolbox in InDesign CS5, Windows platform. Any idea how I can get it back? I recreated the preferences when I started the program this morning, but that did not help.

    Here it is...finally. Looks like there's a blank space where the pen tool should be.
    It certainly does. I've never seen that happen before, so I guess you should fell special.
    Does changing to a different workspace help?
    If not, I think maybe you should reinstall.

  • CS5 Pen Tool -- Hover +/- Disabled?

    Hi y'all--
    So, in CS5, when I hover over an anchor point my pen tool cursor no longer displays a "-" (minus) sign, nor will it allow me to delete that anchor without having to reach over with my left hand (I use pen/tablet) and hit the minus sign. Same thing for adding a point: the pen will no longer display a "+" sign when I hover over a path; I have to hit the = key (thank goodness I don't have to press shift on top of it).
    Is there some sort of option I need to select for this to work? It's a royal pain...
    Thanks for any tips you might have!

    Open Preferences and check the "automatic add/delete off" option. It should of course be deactivated for this to work

  • Photoshop CS6 Pen Tool Issue

    The pen tool won't fill even when I set it to shape layers. Shapes won't fill either. It's getting me really frustrated and I'm not sure if it's just a glitch or I'm missing something.

    Check the options bar for the path tools you're using.
    Make sure they are set to shape layer, and check the fill that you specified (to make sure you didn't specify a fill of "none").

  • Make Selection Pen Tool Issue

    Thanks for reading first of all.
    I know and love the pen tool and have used it for a long time now but suddenly today something is awry. When I outline the part of the image I want and choose make selection it selects everything BUT what I have a path around. This is driving me batty. I tried changing various options in paths and the pen tool but I just can't seem to find out what is suddenly making it do this.
    I'm using CS4.
    Thanks for any and all responses for you will be helping me not pull my hair out any further.

    That worked, thank you.
    Now my only question is why it is suddenly inversing my selections to begin with? Is there an option I accidentally turned on with a hot key? This is a brand new thing happening here when I choose make selection. I mean, it wasn't doing it yesterday.
    Anyways, thanks for the quick reply, my hair is now safe again for the time being.

  • Pen tool issue

    Whenever I click on an audio level line in the timeline with the pen tool, in addition to creating a "node," it also moves the audio level by at least a couple of decibels. Is there some way to add a node so that it doesn't do this? It's really irritating!
    I'm using FCPro 4.5.
    Thanks.

    I understand what you're saying.
    I'm not very good with mice, so I stick to the keyboard shortcut -- Option-Command-K -- for adding level (aka volume) keyframes.
    Be aware that this uses track targeting. So if you want to do this on tracks A3 & A4, but A1 & A2 are targeted, select the clip(s) on tracks A3 & A4 in the timeline, then use the key command. Also, this is independent of the currently selected tool (ie. it works if you're using the Selection tool, or the Pen tool, or the Ripple tool, etc)

  • CS5 selection tool issues

    I am running Photoshop CS5 on Leopard, and I have been having problems with the magic wand tool, and the quick selection tool. The issues with both occur only when the “Sample All Layers” is off in the top menu bar. They both work just fine when sample all layers is on. The issues are outlined below.
    Magic Wand Tool
    The issue that the magic wand is that anti-aliasing doesn’t work at all, while sample all layers is off. I have tried it in RBG, CMYK, with smart objects, and rasterized objects; in all cases it does not anti-alias. It has done this since I first installed it.
    In the example below, is the result of a mask created with a selection made by the magic wand tool.
    Quick Selection Tool
    The issue with the quick selection tool is that it doesn’t select what I tell it to while sample all layers is off. I have tried this in RGB, and with rasterized objects, and smart objects; in all cases this does not work. It has also done this since I first installed it.
    In the example below, I tried to select the black object and it just made a big square selection.
    I re-installed photoshop, and that didn’t change anything, so that rules out any install problems.
    Am I the only one having this problem? I am starting to wonder, since a bug this big would probably show up in forums across the internet.
    All Help would be appreciated

  • Pen tool lag after upgrading to CC

    Hi everyone, after upgrading to CC my pen tool is seriously lagging. Whenever I click a new anchor point, it takes about 1 second for it to appear. Any thoughts?

    I've commented on this bug in another thread and am still simply shocked that Adobe hasn't addressed this for what seems like Windows users(fyi, I'm on Win7 64, plenty of ram, latest version of PS CC 14.2.1, latest video card driver for Nvidia GT630).
    The latest update looks to have fixed the pen tool issues for Mac users, from what I'm hearing from others. The very irritating pen tool lag isn't the only problem, as I'm also unable to press the + or - keys to preset the path operation mode, as in CS6. Does anyone know of a time frame to fix this, or better, a temporary fix/workaround? I've already done a total reinstall, trashed prefs, turned off and on lots of different options under Performace in preferences. To almost make matters worse, the pen tool will randomly work fine with no lag, then start lagging again(although the preset path operation mode never works.. considering using Autohotkey for that). I've tried to pay attention to any setting I may have changed when it suddenly works, but it truly does seem random. And oh yes, the pen tool lag goes away if I use my very outdated Wacom, but using a tablet is counterproductive for me.
    Any reply/suggestion is truly appreciated, thanks guys and gals

  • Pen tool Problems

    When using the pen tool, the handles and anchor points vanish and cannot be altered. HOw can I change this back to being visable? I don't even know what I did! This is in adobe Illustrator CS6.

    I don't think that is what she is experiencing, if you read it carefully the achor point handles are not visible. I don't think she is refering to the path disapearing, which would be the case if she pressed the combination of keys Ctrl+H that hides the path.
    I'm having pen tool issues (that's why I found this thread) because IA is acting buggy lately, meaning that when creating a path I usually kept the pen tool active and just press the Ctrl key & hold while making adjustment to the handles. But lately the handles disapear, or can't make them reapear, I reselect the path all the achors are selected as if I'm in the V tool and in order to bring back the handles I have to reselect the path with the A tool. I hope Adobe plans to fix this issue...

    charmi,
    The following is a general list of things you may try when the issue is not in a specific file (you may have tried/done some of them already); 1) and 2) are the easy ones for temporary strangenesses, and 3) and 4) are specifically aimed at possibly corrupt preferences); 5) is a list in itself, and 6) is the last resort.
    1) Close down Illy and open again;
    2) Restart the computer (you may do that up to 3 times);
    3) Close down Illy and press Ctrl+Alt+Shift/Cmd+Option+Shift during startup (easy but irreversible);
    4) Move the folder (follow the link with that name) with Illy closed (more tedious but also more thorough and reversible);
    5) Look through and try out the relevant among the Other options (follow the link with that name, Item 7) is a list of usual suspects among other applications that may disturb and confuse Illy, Item 15) applies to CC, CS6, and maybe CS5);
    Even more seriously, you may:
    6) Uninstall, run the Cleaner Tool (if you have CS3/CS4/CS5/CS6/CC), and reinstall.

    I just recently up graded from AI CS6 to AI CC and I am having issues with my pen tool. If I create a starting point and then make another point it does not allow me to make the second point an end point. The pen tool stays active and I either have to click to isolate the path or I have to return to the first point and close the path. Please help.

    artisttouch,
    If you cannot close the Pen Tool by switching to another tool, as a temporary measure you may try pressing P (for Pen).
    To solve it, you may try the list.

    If possible/applicable, you should save curent artwork first, of course.
    1) Close down Illy and open again;
    2) Restart the computer (you may do that up to 3 times);
    3) Close down Illy and press Ctrl+Alt+Shift/Cmd+Option+Shift during startup (easy but irreversible);

  • Problem with Pen Tool CS5

    Hi,
    I just got Photoshop CS5 and I'm having a bit of trouble with the pen tool - namely, I can't see the path I'm creating.  In CS3 I could clearly see the line between two points but in the new program the line is nearly invisible making it very difficult to create the path.  Is this a setting I can fix?
    thanks

    I was having 32 bit while I upgraded from CS3 to  CS4. The only problem with CS4 that time was with pen tool.Though I cannot precisely recall , I can say it t was very lazy and very frustrating and this was resolved totally after shifting to 64 bit.--If urs existing system is 32 bit try with 64 bit

  • Pen tool - CS5

    Can someone explain why the pen tool is grey (when cutting a path) and doesn't show up visually easy to see when cutting a path like it has for years in CS4 and older versions.  I remember a long time ago (years) this happened before but they sent out a patch to fix this problem. It makes it very difficult to use the pen tool in dark areas of an image.
    If someone has a fix for this I'd like to heard it. Thanks

    I think the Paths become more difficult to see in CS4, so is it worse in CS5? We are about to upgrade.
    I would like to be able to assign a display color to a path so it would show against a neutral background.
    I would also like to be able to choose to have the anchors display a little bit bigger. My eyes aren't what they used to be, Adobe give me some interface options please, to make my work easier to do.
    Craig
