CS5 Perspective Grid Tool

Thanks in advance for ANY help ya'll can give me.  I am not new to Illustrator, just new to this most current version 5.  I've been working with a version that is way old and finally was able to upgrade.  My question is this:  I'm trying to do some drawings with the perspective grid tool, but what I'm wanting to create needs to have a different perspective.  I'm sorry if I'm not explaining myself very well, I just don't know exactly how to put it.  What I'm trying to draw is essentially a view from someone looking out onto a fishing pier into the distant horizon of the pier and the water.  The only way I'm getting the grid tool to work is from the normal view which is opposite of what I need.  I just don't know how to search or explain exactly what I need.  I'm hoping that this group of professionals will understand and can help me out.
Thanks again!!!
Michele

Thanks for responding so quickly.  I guess what I'm trying to say is that what I'm trying to create would be from a perspective of going "into" the distance and the PG is showing coming "out" of the distance.  Does that help?  Is there a way to rotate the perspective to swing it around the other way?  Thanks again!

  • Need to learn to use perspective grid tool

I've had zero experience with the perspective grid and have a project coming in involving up to 50 graphics which may require it - so I need to learn to use it fast (next 2-3 weeks).
What is the best way of learning this? online tutorial? book? Instructional DVD? In person hands-on training facility?
My company would support my training so all ideas are welcome - thanks!

Why do you not even include in your list of options that which should be the default  first choice?: Read and work through the provided official documentation. It's right there, under the Help menu.
The Perspective Grid is a simple feature, with only a few options. You just need to familiarize yourself with the interface for it. That's exactly what the provided documentation is supposed to do. It should not take anywhere near 2-3 weeks, assuming at least basic working familiarity with the rest of the program. If you lack that, your first course is again:  read (and work through) the manual.

  • TIP: solid planes in CS5 perspective drawing

    After reading this:
    http://blogs.adobe.com/infiniteresolution/2010/05/drawing_in_perspective_using_a.html
I noticed in the sample file that the guide-planes for the perspective grid are drawn as solid planes.
Investigating, I found that the settings are stored in the text file "Perspective Grid Presets" in the
    %USERPROFILE%\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Adobe Illustrator CS5 Settings\en_GB directory (Win7)
Changing the values of  the following to 1 in a preset (identifying takes some intelligence since they have no clear names)
    /PerspectiveGrid_FloorPlaneVisibilityState 1
    /PerspectiveGrid_RightPlaneVisibilityState 1
    /PerspectiveGrid_LeftPlaneVisibilityState 1
gives you a perspective grid like this:
I keep now two presets of perspective grids with exactly the same settings, except the option above. Allows for easy switching between the two views.
If anyone has a way to set these options in the GUI please post.

Using the Perspective Grid tool or Perspective Selection tool, Option/Alt click on one of the three circles at the bottom of the grid plane. This will cycle between grid lines, solid colors, and no visible grid.

  • Type on Right Side of Perspective Grid

    Hi,
I'd like to have a document where I have type skewed on both sides of the perspective grid. I know how to put it on the left side of the grid: Create the type, get the Perspective Grid Selection Tool, select the type and bring it onto the grid and it skews to the angle of the grid. However, when I try to do it on the right hand side of the grid it doesn't allow me. It only lets me angle it on the left hand side of the grid.
How can I get it to write on the right hand side too?
    Thanks!

With the Perspective Grid Tool or the Perspective Selection Tool click in the Active Plane Widget to activate the plane you want to work in. If the widget is not visible, double click the Perspective Tool in the Tools panel and activate it. The relevant information is in the Help files.

  • Can I use CC Perspective grid "in reverse" -- for inside of a room

    Hello
Using windows cc 2014 (most recent update).
I want to draw the inside of a room using the perspective grid if possible.
I see how it's done using a exterior of a building.  But I need it for inside of a room.  See attached mockup.
I know I've seen a cc tutorial somewhere showing how to use perspective inside a room.  But can't seem to find it today.
    Any suggestions and/or links?
    Thanks

with your perspective grid visible, select the "perspective grid tool" from the tool palette or press Shift+P. with that tool drag on the bottom controller of the vertical grids across to the opposite side so that the 2 vertical grids cross each other

  • Why can't I move artwork with the perspective selection tool?

I created a carpet and decorated it with symbols. When I tried to place it in the perspective grid with the perspective tool, it wouldn't move. I can move it fine with the selection tool and there's a bounding box but nothing happens when I use the perspective selection tool.
    Need help. Thanks.

You have to make sure that one of the grids (Left, Right, Horizontal) is active.
Just check the widget that appears when you select the Perspective Grid Tool. You can click on those sides of the cube with the Perspective Grid or the Perspective Selection Tool to make one of them active. You can also press the key 1, 2 or 3 to make either of those grids active.
If you click on the circular portion outside the cube, none of the grids is active. Then you can't move the artwork with the Perspective Selection Tool. You can press the key 4 to make none of the grids active which is especially useful when you don't want your artwork to distort in perspective while still working with the Perspective Grid showing on the artboard.

  • How To Use CS5 Perspective Tool

Does anyone know how to place jpgs using the perspective tool without converting it to a vector? The file is too large for the web. Any tips?

I can only find one way and it is a little funky.
    1. select the plane you want the picture to be on
    2. then create or drag a shape to it, it can be any closed path.
    3. with the shape selected go to the Draw Inside command near the bottom of the Tool Panel and select it.
    4. while the Draw Inside Object is selected go to File>Place and select your image and click OK
    5. You will probably have to reposition the image and perhaps resize it as well.
this is how it works and you can see from my watermark that the image in perspective
you have use the direct select or selection tool to reposition and resize the image a little tricky but work able.
this will be a feature request to make such a container for images to be used on the perspective grid.

    • Simply selecting my custom Grid and then hitting Delete on my keyboard does not work either.
    What am I missing?
    Please advise.

    Yippee! It worked.
I was looking at View>Perspective Grid>Define Grid dialog box
I am just getting my feet with CS5 and its new features.
A big thank you, Michael and Mylenium.

  • Use of Perspective Grid (One Point)

I'm new to Illustrator and finding my way around. I found one of the tutorial examples referencing this article on the use of a perspective grid to create a graphic:
    http://www.intraligi.com/project/adobe-illustrator-cs5-pre-release-programm.html
Looking at page 4 and seeing how he has the grid set up, I'm unable to create this same grid. For one thing, when I go to View > Perspective Grid > Define Grid, under Grid Color & Opacity, the Right Grid is greyed out. Also, I can't get the horizontal grid lines to extend all the way to the vanishing point, like he's showing in the example.
Can someone please tell me what I'm missing here and why I can't recreate the perspective grid shown?

    GlennM_ wrote:
I think I got it now how he created the grid that he used. I believe what he did was use a 2 point Perspective Grid, and then moved the vanishing points so that they were (almost) together, creating a single point.
I can create the same effect this way and that looks like how he did it.
I don't think so, they just moved the grid easy enough to do with the grid tool
Grab th circular end of the guide with the grid tool and drag.

  • Attaching Gradient Mesh to Perspective Grid

    Is this possible?
I am using Adobe Illustrator CS5. I have created a gradient mesh brain and would like to place it on a perspective grid. When I select the gradient mesh and choose "Object", "Perspective", the option "Attach to Active Plane" is not select-able. (see screenshot)
How to I attach a gradient mesh object to a perspective grid? I have tried expanding, but the same problem exists.
Thanks in advance for any help.

Thank you for your comment. I have changed the location of the widget to the bottom left now so you can see it in the screenshot.
As you can now see I have selected the right-most (orange) plane, yet the problem still exists. I can't select "Attach to Active Plane" from the Perspective menu. I have also tried dragging the mesh with the perspective selection tool, but nothing happens...

  • Problems Moving An Object Perpendicular To Its Perspective Grid

I have been following this tutorial: http://tv.adobe.com/watch/learn-illustrator-cs5/mapping-flat-artwork-to-the-perspective-gr id/ in which artwork is mapped to the perspective grid.
Towards the end  of the video (7:00) a sign is mapped to the left grid then moved perpendicular along the right grid ... this is achieved by holding down the tilde key.
When I hold down the tilde key and move the object (which is selected with the perspective selection tool, with the correct grid selected ) it does not map it perpendicular as in the video.
I have deleted my illustrator preferences file (in case any settings were causing this feature not to work). Also if I create a new object and press the tilde key and drag I can create multiple instances, so the tilde key at least in this case is being recognized.

    CF,
Do you have a US English keyboard?
If not, you may/will have to use another key.

  • Perspective grid and blends, extrusions. etc.

I'm new to cs5 so please excuse my worn-out observations/questions regarding the perspective grid:
    1. Blends do not warp into perspective when on the grid.
    2. Symbols cannot be directly swapped without using the workaround of swapping symbols in the symbols palette.
    3. Objects cannot be "extracted" from perspective, once they've been warped.
    4. Patterns are not distorted.
    5. Moving objects perpendicular to current plane requires 4 mouse clicks and typing in a measurement.
    6. Grouped objects cannot be moved perpendicular to plane when they do not share the same plane.
I've only started to learn this new feature, so I realize my expectations are WAY out of line, but if anyone has found some useful workarounds I'd appreciate hearing about them.
    Thanks,
    Ray

    Hello Ray,
Although you say you're new to CS5, I find most of your observations are correct.
    1. Blends do not warp into perspective when on the grid.
NO. Blends do get projected in perspective. Can you share (screenshot or something) what exactly you are doing so that we can help?
    2. Symbols cannot be directly swapped without using the workaround of swapping symbols in the symbols palette.
    CORRECT
    3. Objects cannot be "extracted" from perspective, once they've been warped.
CORRECT. You don't get the original shape back. This is where you should use symbols if you require frequent editing of the object in its original form.
    4. Patterns are not distorted.
CORRECT. Workaround is to expand fill.
    5. Moving objects perpendicular to current plane requires 4 mouse clicks and typing in a measurement.
    NO
-Objects can be moved perpendicular to the plane by Perspective Selection Tool & the 5 key.
-It requires a double-click by the Perspective Selection Tool on the corresponding plane control widget to invoke the plane positioning dialog.
    6. Grouped objects cannot be moved perpendicular to plane when they do not share the same plane.
CORRECT. They cannot be moved together perpendicular to their individual planes. Only the object you click on is moved.
