CS5 Photomerge - incorrect reposition/alignment

Hello,
Im an architecture student using educational version of CS5, and recently I've been having an issue(?) with the photomerge tool.
A little background to what Im trying to do: Im working on a project that involves taking screen-shots of a 6 square miles area from Google Earth and combining/tiling them to obtain a bigger, more detailed map. I have the Google Earth set so that it shows only the satelite view of the ground below, with all the ground effects turned off (simplified and flattened ground) and from the same altitude/zoom level.
When done, I had exactely 120 screen-shots, which I ran through photomerge set at reposition only option. At first, PS loaded all shots and started aligning them, but would take forever to complete. I tried tiling groups of 12 shots at a time then combining the results, and that worked great. No problems here.
I had to relocate my 6 sq mi area to a different place and redo it all over. This time photomerge would still work (still grouping shots), but it would not position them correctly; meaning they would be on the bottom instead on the top. I tried overlaping the shots more and ended up with a total of 144 files, but with same results. Most of the screen-shots would be positioned correctly, but sometimes photomerge would divide the map in two with a blank strip of nothing. Sometimes the map would be 98% correct, with shots positioned, aligned, and blended great, except for a last row of shots that would be detached from the rest of the map.
What am I doing wrong?
Any input would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you!

Thank you for your reply.
Well, all of the 144 screen-shots taken have the "Google Earth" and two other marks on them, but I made sure the shots overlap each other enough so that PS have room to work on them.
I made a couple attempts on the same set of shots (with marks on all of them) and most of the time photomerge tool won't have any problems with correctly alignining and blending them. There were a few instances where a row or a column, depending on how do I 'stich' the individual shots, would be correctly aligned within its row/column, but wont align with the rest of the shots.

  • Photomerge and Auto Align/Blend issues!!! HELP!

I have a lot of photos that I need to create panoramas of, and when I use Photomerge all of the photos that I want to create a panorama of show up on the same image, but are stacked one on top of the other. Not linked or mergedin any way. They all have vector masks, but nothing covered up. When I try to use the Auto Align and Auto Blend modes for a panorama, an error box shows up saying that I don't have enough coverage area of 40%, but I certainly do. They images are very similar, and taken by standing and moving 360 degrees. I don't understand why Photoshop doesn't like these images? But I have to make about 100 panoramas, so any and all help and insight would be greatly appreciated!!!

What OS are you running?  32 bit or 64 bit?  How big are your source images and how many do you have for a given pano?
I just did a 360 degree pano that ended  up 25689 x 1850 pixels (after cropping) from 17 raw Canon 40D images, all handheld while standing in different spots around the Clingman's Dome observation tower in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.  Photoshop CS5 standard 64 bit on Windows 7 x64 with 8 GB RAM didn't have any problem at all with it, though it took about 10 minutes or so to finish.  The result came out astoundingly good, even though the slight changes in perspective should have been challenging.

If you don't mind my asking, what do you do with hundreds of panoramas?  It's an difficult image format to find uses for to say the least.

  • CS5 Photomerge hanging when using many files

    Hello,
I have managed to work around the issue, but it's annoying nonetheless.
The basic problem is that I've started creating very wide and tall Bokeh Panoramas or 'The Brenzier Method' http://www.ryanbrenizer.com/category/brenizer-method/
From Lightroom I select the images I want and 'merge to panorama in PS'.  When I use say 2 - 30 images it's fine.  However when I use say 160 (ridiculous I know) it will hang when merging the files, processor usage stays on 13%, but the progress dialogue bar doesn't animate.  I tried it through photomerge and 'align all layers' from the edit menu.  I reduced this ridiculous amount to 60 and if I chose the 'vignette removal' option on the photomerge dialogue it will hang on this process after starting to create the panorama.  If I don't do the vignette, it will create the panorama.
I know that it will depend upon the complexity of the merge, it's just annoying that it would fail whereas Microsoft ICE will complete the panorama without fail, it just may be of a lesser accuracy due to parallax.
Other than using less images and attempting to overlap correctly, is there much else that can be done?
I'm using an up to date version of CS5 64bit windows.  running on a 16gb Core i7 2600k.  The merged final image occupies 13gig of ram.  I have the scratch disc on a spare 2tb drive with about 1.5 tb free.
    Paul

Mr_Fujisawa, I just wanted to come back on here and thank you for opening my mind to the "Brenizer Method", which I had not heard of before.  I've been experimenting with it today and enjoying the results!  Up to now I put effort into getting everything in focus all across my panos, which are generally landscapes.  It didn't dawn on me to use stitching on subjects up close.

  • CS5 Photomerge - how to avoid those strange jig-saw lines in the sky

Here is one image out of 4
that I am merging [just an example of one of many I do]
you will note that the sky area to the left of the rainbow is clear and normal.
When using Photomerge direct from bridge and on RAW files regardless of resolution I am getting nasty and annoying lines and areas of uneven-ness that are too hard to fix by retouching as they are widespread and large. They usually appear in smooth detail-less areas like skies and really stand out if you want to darken them. They are NOT anything to do with the joins of the images and they appear regardless of how many images you are merging. They appear regardles of which style - ie 'auto', 'reposition', 'cylinder' etc one chooses in the merge panel. As I am trying to sell large-scale and perfect panoramic prints for the wall, the only way I can avoid them is to keep these areas light so they don't show up - that's not what I want! The next pic shows an example - I have saturated to make it clear to see.
    Regards Mal

Are you stitching 16 bits/channel files?  I would guess you're using 8 bit.  Posterization can be a problem with 8 bit.
Try 16 bit.  I've done a lot of Photomerges of 16 bit files and I don't see what you're showing.

  • InDesign CS5 - Text won't align with shape

I've created shapes in InDesign CS5 and then added text boxes (separate elements).  When I try to align the text and the shape, the text box acts as if the wrap function is on and the text is not visible.  I've checked and the settings for both the shape and the text box are set to "no wrap."
I've tried searching for a solution online, but the answers I get are mostly related to wrapping text around a shape or other non-related issues.

Yes - I did that first, thinking I was "hiding" the text.  But the text is in front...
The advice by Willi Adelberger helped - putting the text directly into the shape seems to be working, though I noticed that the text is still not quite aligned correctly...

  • CS4 Photomerge Won't Align Images Correctly

I've used PS CS4 successfully several times to create panoramic images. I decided to re-do a panorama that I had created with an older version a few years ago, but CS4 won't align the images correctly. It keeps trying to make the horizon into a wavey line. It also is not giving me the option of adjusting its results. Is there anything I could do to fix this?

You probably don't want to hear this, but Photoshop CS5 apparently has improved horizon handling over CS4.  I've noticed the horizons in my panos are coming out better with CS5.
That said, have you tried "Cylindrical" mode instead of "Automatic"?

  • Photoshop CS5 photomerge with dng files crashes

    hello and greetings from Finland,
I have constant problems with photomerge tool when using dng files converted from Nikon´s nef files. Photomerge loads all pictures, normally 4-6, starts to align them etc. process seemst to be running just fine. Just before finished panorama picture should appear to screen, photoshop returns to default state. With original nef files, everything works just fine. This happens only with dng files. I´m using iMac (i5 processor with 12 GB RAM, cache for Photoshop in separate HD etc.)
So far I have tried following tricks for this problem; several resets for Photoshop settings file and reboot after that. Uninstalled and reinstalled whole Ps twice. Used two different, formatted memory cards in camera (Nikon D700).
After those, no help. Maybe second reinstall gave some relief for this, dng files worked fine couple of times, but now I have that same error again and I´m running out of ideas what to do next. And once again, I have this problem only with dng´s.
Any similar experiences? Did you managed to get things work again? How?

I don't mean to break your rocks, Chris, but try to keep some perspective...  A component of Photoshop exiting abnormally (and delivering no results) is a crash to any user who doesn't have a deep insight as to how it's implemented.  Maybe it's not as serious as a "whole Photoshop crash with loss of data", but it's not an unreasonable interpretation.
"Not finishing" could be your internal definition of it, and I might even agree with your terminology if it just popped up a message saying "The price of tea in China has risen too high - Photomerge must exit", but just quitting without any message is a crash by any reasonable definition.
Regardless of what Adobe may say, rillumarei, I personally have come to believe Camera Raw leaves some corruption of memory somewhere as I've found any editing session after a Camera Raw run seems a little more likely to fail than one where a PSD or other "normal" image format is opened (without Camera Raw).

Fair enough.  Something's changed on your system, then.
Things that can cause Photoshop to fail:
Newly installed 3rd party plug-in, but which is incompatible or has a problem.
    Newly installed font.
Newly installed driver (e.g., for the display, by Windows Update).
    Corrupted preferences.
You should know if you installed a plug-in or font, and if a driver update caused the problem you can usually get a better driver from the web site of the maker of your display adapter (video card).
To reset Photoshop's preferences to defaults, you can press and hold Control-Shift-Alt immediately after starting Photoshop from its menu entry or shortcut.  You have to be quick.  Keep in mind you'll have to reconfigure a lot of things again if you've changed them from defaults.

  • CS5 Photomerge crashes

I'm using Windows 7, with 12GB's of RAM. Had same issue on my Vista, though my RAM was failing, and I thought that may have been the issue. 7 laptop is brand new, and new install of CS5. Photomerge goes through the motions, you see the photos it's working on in the right window, and then they all disappear, and there's no final photo.
If Adobe won't issue a fix/repair, is there something else I can do to attain the same results?

Please post in the Photoshop forum. This forum is for suite specific
    issue only.

  • CS5 Photomerge plug in Ul

I do large panoramics (up to 8 gigs with up to 100 interior photographs).  With CS4 and Photomerge interactive I was often able to do good images.  Automatic would usually not work.  There were usually misalignments.  Now with CS5 Adobe took away the interactive function but now have a  plug in Ul that only works in 32 bit.  So there was really no good reason to get CS5 Photoshop when in Photomerge interactive I cannot use 64 bit and access all the power inherent in it.  What is the point of only having automatic features for Photomerge?  I hope they add a Ul plug-in soon BUT in 64 bit.

It rings the bell - I think we saw something to this effect a while ago, but I cannot recall what we did to make it go away - there were way too many CS5 specific issues we had to deal with lately. Does the automation throw an exception into PS or return a failure code? Also posting your modified listener may help...

  • En CS5 reporting incorrect file size

Hi all, I am creating a DVD9 program with 1 video timeline and 3 audio tracks. I exported out of Premiere AME(win 7 pro x64) the video timeline and main audio track(48k wav). I then exported audio only of the other two tracks mpeg audio.
The exported file sizes that show on my hard drive are:
    5.1 gig m2v file
    2.1 gig 48k wav file
    485 meg mpa audio file
    360 meg mpa audio file
In En I imported the video and wav file as a timeline, in the build window it shows the file size as 8.1 gigs, not the appox. 7.2 gig as shown above
I imported the 2 mpa files as assets and added 2 audio tracks to the timeline. When I put either of the mpa assets into the timeline and check the build tab it shows that each mpa file as about 2 gigs.
I confirmed that there is no video associated with the mpa tracks by importing as a timeline and it showed no video track, and triple checked by looking at the file in quicktime movie inspector. I also went back to AME and exported the audio using format dropdown selection as audio only and selected output format of AAC 48k 256 bit rate and got the same result in En
In the project window it showed the 2 mpa files as untranscoded, I even did a transcode in En and that made no difference.
I am at a loss with this one.
Not sure if this matters, the program length is 3.5 hours
    Any thoughts?

Hi Stan, here are some caps of what I am doing
First cap shows the project files as they appear on my HD
This is the project tab with all assets imported
This shows timline imported on the build tab
This shows the build tab after the second audio track is added
This shows the build tab after the third audio track is in
I have also cleared all cache files, and created a new project.
If I drop all the project files into Nero it shows as an 8.1 gig project, not the 12.1 that shows in En.
To try and determine if there is a corrupt file, I brought each file in one at a time as a timeline, and every one came up as oversized.
I have done this many times before going back to CS3, I have never encountered this before. This is the first time doing this in CS5.

  • CS5 Photomerge

When i try to stitch photos together in cs5 the progress bar completes
& i see the stiched panorama for approx 1 second then it disappears. Im using xp professional 32X. latest version 12.04 photoshop. Can anyone help?

Do you see the same thing after you try the following?
    Edit - Preferences - Performance.
Uncheck [ ] Enable OpenGL Drawing.
    Close and restart Photoshop.
If so, you need to update your display driver.  Go to the web site of the maker of your video card, find the driver that matches your hardware and operating system, and install the latest.  Don't forget to re-enable OpenGL after the update, so you can get back the OpenGL-specific features of Photoshop.

  • Adobe Illustrator CC (CS6, CS5.1) incorrectly opens a PDF file.

    Hello,
I have a problem. The customer sent me a graphic in PDF, which he wanted for us to print on textiles. I opened the graphics in Adobe Illustrator CC, edited and put into print.
After a customer complained about the flag at us and when we found out where she could be a mistake, I found that Adobe Illustrator can not open the PDF correctly. With this error, I met for the first time. More can be seen on video here: http://screenr.com/2ZUN
PDF file is available here: http://goo.gl/oljbSs
This is a bug Illustrator? Because PDF file is correct PDFX/1a file.
Or is there any other way to open a PDF file in order to keep the look?
Thanks so much for all the answers.

It's not really a bug. It's an uneducated customer (what a surprise).  :+)
Now you have something to add to your document "how to prepare files" for your service.
    That's what I have,
but what I say. No one that does not follow.
When we say that we need the data in a different format,
let us send graphics otherwise, most will say that it will be printed
elsewhere, where these "other requirements" does not require them.
But it is already a different thing.
I just have to hope that this created PDF files will not be much, because
for the last 5 years since opening the PDF files in Illustrator and regulates I had no problem (to small gradients, which I solved by saving PDF and Postscript file Jeko that open in Adobe Illustrator)
Thanks so much for your feedback.

  • Trouble using Photomerge in CS5

I purchased Photoshop CS5 for a single reason: stitching the groups of photos that I have taken over the years into panoramas.  I am well aware of the proper techniques for shooting panoramas (maintaining consistent nodal point and camera settings).  So far I have attempted to Photomerge two sample sets of photos and can't get either to work the way I expected.  For some background:
Set 1: includes 4 photos of a stadium and the surrounding paved pavilion
Set 2: includes 7 photos of a resort overlooking a mountain range
When I select the groups of photos in Lightroom and choose to Photomerge them using Photoshop CS5, I see the dialog box with choices of Auto, Perspective, Cylindrical, etc.  When I tried merging Set 1 using Auto, the output was distorted and bubbly.  The stadium was shrunken and rounded.  When I tried manually selected the Perspective merging mode, the distortion was eliminated, and the tiles of the pavilion were perfectly aligned as I wanted.  But unfortunately, only 1 of the 4 shots was terribly out of place.  The left-most image was almost entirely ignored, but a small section of it was incorrectly grafted on the bottom right side of the merged photo.  I don't understand why it can correctly align the 4 images while in Auto mode, but can't do the same when I manually choose Perspective mode.  Is there any way to help Photomerge recognize the correct alignment.
On the second set, again Auto mode just isn't able to properly render the photo.  The photos were taken inside of a round field overlooking a mountain range, but 'Auto' Photomerge incorrectly straightens out the perimeter of the field so that it is parallel with the horizon.  Again, when I choose Perspective mode, the majority of the image appears correctly, but the resulting image is heavily skewed to one side.  Instead of selecting a central image to represent the vanishing point, the reference point of the photo is on the far left, and the right side of the photo is overly stretched out as a result.  I would like to be able to move the vanishing point of the photo to one of the central images, but I don't see any option to correct this problem (except possible a custom lens correction).  Am I missing a setting that would allow the Perspective-corrected image to have the vanishing point moved to a spot of my choosing?
Thanks for your help with these issues.

Here's link to the Photoshop CS5 trial Download CS5 products
You then have 30 days to make them.
I know you both got blindsided, but I suppose you did list that they were for CC and he took a chances running it on an older version, which you did not specify as being for CS5.

  • CS4 photomerge cannot align my images- period...

I have downloaded the plug-ins and reset my preferences.  Still: the message "some images cannot be aligned" and no suggestion on how to fix the problem.  I have always successfully used CS3 toi merge edited tif files.  Any other ideas except to reload CS3

    Hi
Can you explain a little further what these plugins do? I guess the key here is Photomerge UI. I have CS5, and I sometimes miss the interactive alignment feature of the Photomerge from Elements. Interactive alignment is not possible via the Photomerge feature of CS5, although it is possible to move pictures around and auto-blend them. Would installing the Photomerge UI to my CS5 restore the interactive alignment feature of the Photomerge I had in Elements?
    Best regards,
